You will need to flash stock using odin
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989
You are on the leaked froyo which had s recovery that will not allow you to flash custom roms.
You can find roms here in the development thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=706
Flashing roms is mainly done through clockwork recovery which us installed through rom manager which is a free app you can get from the market
As to which rom to use is a matter of opinion. Read threads, and understand the known issues. Most of the custom roms are great but there are short comings
If you need any further help feel free to pm me.

because recovery 3e which is what comes with FROYO by default, doesnt allow unsigned zip files to be used...which means you will not be able to use clockworkmod to install new roms...

thanks guys

alrite guys, finally i was able to flush with stock, did master clear and go it rooted with super user access.
when i did some research, thats what i found, whihc one sould i use, all i care if there is no ATT apps
* AOSP FroYo Beta Molecule http://tiny.cc/f7p1f
* VanillaCaptivate (AOSP 2.1): http://tiny.cc/fu3qc (still in alpha)
* COGNITION v2.2 BETA (previously SRE by Designgears): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=786532
* Frankin-Twiz: http://tiny.cc/4vc56
* Captivate-Deodexed-JH7 stock: http://tiny.cc/87wiw
* Eugene's Vibrant Hybrid R3 http://tiny.cc/43v8p
* Shep211's JPK\JI6 ROM http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803569
* Stock ROM (Odin one click): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989

Or you could read about each one and select on for yourself.

Can you tell me how did it get the stock version?
I too had the same version but whenever I use the Method 1 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=731989, it always stays at download page and nothing is done on Odin. So I went with the steps mentioned on this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=818439 which still keeps the 2.2 firmware(btw mine is 1010 series)
Any idea on how to get back to stock version.
[update] NM abt this.. I figured it out. and choose Cognition..
Man, Cognition is awesome.. captivate is so fast and Quadrant shows 1500+ always.. Its time to donate to Cognition
I took this version: http://www.ponack.net/designgears/release/Cognitionv2.3b7-oc-uv.zip

[Q] [REQ] Install custom kernel to stock 2.3.4

Hi,
I would like to use supercurios's color calibration tool to change my colors back to vibrant. But I want to preserve the possibility for getting future OTA update. Or if it is not possible with custom kernel then the chance to revert back stock kernel easily at least.
My Nexus is
Hardware: i9020T SAMOLED
ROM: completely stock 2.3.4 (no rooted, no unlocked bootloader)
Baseband: I9020XXKD1
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-ge382d80 android [email protected] #1
BuildNr: GRJ22
I read a lot of threads and I'm now pretty confused what I really need to do this and what kernel is for this??
Please help me and give me a step-by-step guide what should I do to use color calibration tool?
Thank you!

please anyone, at least let me know if it is impossible!
thanks!
First of all you need to get clockworkmod recovery. Then you flash a kernel's zip file through cwm. Any kernel in the Nexus S android dev section has supercurio's color mod included, then you can download the Voodoo control app in the market to set your color preference. Hope that helps.

first of all thank you for response
can I install CWM onto 2.3.4 as it is described for 2.3 in stickies? Any kernel is good for receiving and install OTA?
1. yes you can,
2. i think so but im not entirely sure. havent been to stock since a week after i got my nexus s.
if you want to be as close to stock but getting the extra features of a custom rom, i suggest you flash an AOSP (andoird open source project) based custom rom.
Thanks for help!
You're welcome

[Q] New to Charge. Root questions...

First of all I did search and found some info but it wasn't really helpful... I'm new to the Charge. I've had many android phones before and have never had problems rooting and flashing roms. I've searched and I've seen the instructions on how to root and they look like they're in another language. Does anyone have more clear instructions on how to root??? Any help, asap, would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
we are in the same page buddy....

Hey Brandon, this thread gives a great description on how to root your charge. => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14692818
If you still have questions feel free to ask, and I'll try to answer them as best as i can.
Ok, so i got it rooted and just installed a de-bloated stock Rom. Its ok, but now question is, if i decide to install a gingerbread Rom or any other Rom such as gummycharged, can i just install like i did on my bolt or x in cwm or do i have to use this odin program? if i have to use odin, how do i go about installing that way? thanks in advance...

For most roms, like gummycharged fe 2.0 and gbe 2.0 you just need CWM. I'm sure the process is the same as your bolt but just to be clear: Place the rom's zip you want on the sd card, boot into CWM, wipe date, dalvik cache, and cache partition, and then install the rom from the sd card. =) There are also some roms that come as full-odins, where you flash the package through odin and it does the work for you. That being said, you shouldn't run into that many unless you are un-rooting your phone. Hope that made sense. let me know if it doesn't.
Sweet. Thanks alot dude. That's awesome to know. I don't really wanna get into messing with odin. I like being able to do everything from my phone and not having to hook up to the laptop.

LOL, I was just coming in here to ask that exact same question as the OP. The wording was almost verbatim what I was going to say. The majority of experience I have had with Android is with HTC phones. I have rooted a few tablets as well. The instructions for the charge root are super confusing compared to previous devices.
My big issue is with the terminology. Like what is EE4, EPF1? Are there certain kernels that only work with certain roms? How easy is it to completely pooch the phone if I click on the wrong button in Odin? Can I make a nandroid backup and swap roms on the fly using Rom Manager depending on my moods or is it more complex then other android phones?
I haven't checked out the posts yet in this thread but seeing as how at least one other person has been just as confused as me I'm wondering if someone out there that has experience with both Samsung and lets say HTC phones can make a simple guide that makes comparisons to other rooting processes. For people that arn't used to Samsung phones, these instructions can be very overwhelming and there doesn't seem to be a newbie thread out there that gives information on all the abbreviations used and what they mean.

EE4, EP1W, ect are OS build numbers. EE4 is the current official release Froyo build. EP1W is the latest leaked Gingerbread build we have. Those are pretty much the only two version you want to worry about right now. There are Froyo kernels and Gingerbread kernels. Any Froyo kernel will work with any Froyo ROM, and any GB kernel will work with any GB ROM.
Only mess with the PDA button in Odin and you'll be fine. Forget the Phone button even exists, because that's the button that can get you into trouble. You can use the PIT button as well if you have the charge.pit file, but it's not normally necessary, so only do that if you have a reason.
ROM Manager is useless with this phone. There are reports that there is a version of CWM from it that will work with the Charge, but it doesn't work nearly as well as the latest imnuts CWM. The orange CWM dated 8/17 will let you do nandroid backups...you just need to boot directly into it and do them from CWM itself and forget about ROM Manager.

nice summation (is that a word? lol)... this is all you need to know, its not hard as Sammy phones in my experience are the easiest to root/rom/recover

This was all helpful. I installed gummycharged with no issues. One other thing. Is the install of a kernal for gingerbread roms done in cwm? And what is a standard kernal to use? Do I need to install a different radio?? Thanks.

kernels for all roms on the Charge are installed in CWM, as for GB kernels you can't go wrong with any of Imoseyons voodoo ones... radios don't necessarily need to be updated but I've noticed a big improvement with the latest EP1W modems, however the results vary on different phones I've seen

[Q] unable to flash UCKK3 on infuse

Hello Folks,
I am stuck with Samsung-Infuse Here ...
Previously I was on CatyRom - 2.3.6 on infuse .. but seems it broke the phone capabilities .. I was not able to install most of the applications from the market... even the basic applications like "Facebook" / "Google Apps" wouldn't get installed..."device incompatible" or something like that it would pop in the "Market" itself...
so after a few tries... I have finally reverted back to the Stock ROM...Thanks a ton to gtg for this post.... ) atleast finally the things are working...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1112555
But it's FROYO... ( I'm currently on UCKE3...
I tried getting the OTA version from AT&T ... through manual update .. and *#*#checkin#*#*.... but somehow that was not able to get me the update...
So currently I am trying to flash the ROMS mentioned in this post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1293751
ROM I997UCKK3 [2.3.6]
ROM I997UCKK2 [2.3.6]
[CUSTOM ROM] Compiled CM 7 for Infuse 4G [2.3.7]
I've tried flashing through ODIN .. as well as through "sdcard/update.zip" but none seems to be working out for me...
even tried getting the firmware-update using the "Kies" & "Kies-Mini" especially launched for Infuse customers... but none seems to work ...
Can someone please help me out with this one... ?
Thanks,
/P
there is no official gb. only leaks.the last leak was uckl2.
once on uckl2 you might not be able to root it, you will have to swap Kernels around. might want to flash Zeus instead unless you really want cm7.
you need cwm to flash the roms, most roms don't have an update script that works in stock recovery. fastest way to cwm is to flash a voodoo kernel in sgs kernel flasher or Odin or heimdall. if you have root use kernel flasher.
or you can do it the slow way and replace recovery with a modded version, then use green cwm for the i9000 via update.zip.
I am looking for a snappy ROM which works fast .... not looking specifically for CM7...
I decided on CM7, from the reviews of other folks .. lot's of folks are returning back to CM7 after trying out "Infuse" / sensation .. and "Caty"... so was just wondering what would be the best option ..
I am looking for a stable version; as I do not flash often ... I would stick to a stable version for a little longer then flash all the new updates/leaks that keep coming..

[Q] Noob (again) trying to update -HELP pls :)

Hello guys! i have been a member here for a while lurking for updates (1 year ago). I have been out of the loop, and lurking for knowledge is now difficult for my schedule. I now feel the need to have a new look/feel to my phone instead of considering a new phone. If someone can give me advice, it would be much appreciated.
Question: Is there a one click file i can download to update my phone? an all around great functioning update?
current SGS4G stats:
model: SGH- T959V
Firmware: 2.2.1
Baseband: T959VUVKD1
Kernel: 2.6.32.9- Bali_SGS4G_v3.3UV
build: FROYO.VUVKD1
PS: i have voodoo and CWM installed FWIW
I would suggest starting small and go with a gingerbread rom such as...
BareBones,valhalla-final,etc.
Going to an mtd such as miu, cm7,cm9,aokp is a big step, that could end up being a bigger mess than you may be ready for.
I've flashed everything available and have settled for a custom gingerbread rom
To get started, i would download and install the gremlin remover one click, then flash vahalla final or vahalla black. Miui is a good one too... the 1 click gr is a great starting point because it is pre-rooted and it fully clean out your file systems... making it easier to flash a custom Rom and ensure you start at a truly fresh point... No leftover data corrupting things...
Sent from my SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
Thanks a heap guys. so Gremlin remover > Vahalla Final ROM.
I'll search this forum for these files later tonight
Hi Adas
If you speak Hebrew (Hadas?) You can flash HebrewValhalla instead.
sent from me
the link was too slow for the gremlin remover (4+ hours)... i just followed the steps to clean install valhalla final and formatted the SD and wiped the stuffs via CWM. quite snappy now, and installed the swype apk. feels like a new phone
Ouch! 4+hours?....what are you on dial-up?

[Q] need some help to tell my bootloader and basic root and CWM procedure

Hi all
I recently receive a 2nd i897, it's running fine but it's only a 2.2.1 (rooted and CWM installed already)
To get myself busy, I decide to upgrade it to 2.3
Here is some background from the setting page:
Model number: i9000
firmware version: 2.2.1
baseband version: i9000ugl2
build number: lidroid 1.9.3
And if i switch on my i897 from complete switch off state
I see "first" i9000 symbol, then i897 symbol
Because of this, i am not too sure what bootloader i am currently on.
My plan:
1.To flash this firmware from samfirmware - SGH-I897_I897UCKK4_UC_ATT (To get GB bootloader and clean 2.3.3)
2.To flash one of the GB kernels from http://www.semaphore.gr/downloads/captivate (To root and install CWM)
3. To flash my favorite GB custom rom
I wish to make sure if my plan is correct before going ahead
THX
Joe
It looks like u currently have an i9000 froyo rom and u have the i9000 froyo bootloaders.
I would suggest an upgrade to the GB 2.3.5 i897ucKK4 firmware with the Bootloaders and then flash KK4 Corn Kernel v7.0A to get the CWM Recovery that is included with that kernel (u can flash the .tar version of this kernel through Odin...use the PDA slot). Then flash ur rom of choice through the cwm. There is no need to get Root before u flash a Dev Rom.

Thx 4-2ndtwin
It looks like my little plan is align with your reply.
One more question, can i flash semaphore kernel instead of Corn kernel?
Thx
U can...But if it is not a KK4 based kernel then it will not boot ur phone.
If u try to boot up it will more than likely bootloop. U can use the 3 button combo to get into its recovery though. And then flash ur rom from there.
I would say, go with Corn Kernel.

hi guys
things didn't go too well.
30 mins ago, I just flashed UCKK4
from this link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357848)
Odin reported no errors, but now i have bootloop, I see at&t bootscreen
then a "3g" flying animation with white background.
Can someone guide me from here?
1. I think i need the proper way to get in recovery again
2. or to boot into download mode
Thx
Joe
don't worries guys
I have it solved
Cool. Glad u got it goin.
