Okay I am staring this thread because there are mixed answers in the official update thread and this might give one spot for noobs like me that are not flash addicts a place to find the quick answer.
Here is my setup:I am rooted, running a bone stock JH7 rom, ROM Manager installed, Circle Battery Mod installed, other than that no custom kernels, modems, radios, etc. I do have a couple programs that require root access like ROM Manager, AdFree, and ClockSync. Already installed kies mini and have it all set up per the instructions on samsung's website. Just waiting for the update to go live.
Here are my questions:
1) Do I need to unroot?
2) Do I or should I uninstall any apps that require root access or change the recovery image (ROM Manager/Clockwork Recovery)
3) Should I remove both my external SD and my SIM prior to flashing?
4) What data will I lose and how do I back it up? (I have read that SD cards are left alone just system data like call logs, sms, contacts, email setup, saved passwords are lost) I have Lookout installed so I know my contacts are backed up.
5) Could someone way smarter than me please do a quick write up that is more detailed on the steps needed to complete this update AND keep all your data? I don't mind reinstalling apps (just hope I don't lose all of my angry birds progress )
All of these questions are not address in any of the "official" information other than "you should back up any data you don't want to lose" but gives no steps on how to do it.
Same question here, I'm rooted with TiBU and voodoo lagfix and that's it., well besides deleting all bloatware. Still on eclair jh7. Wish I had done lagfix months ago, but I don't have a computer.

If you have a modded phone the smart thing would be to wait at least a few days before installing the update in case the rollout doesn't go as planned. These are the kind of things AT$T has probably been dreading as far as Froyo is concerned because I'm sure that come tomorrow their customer service lines are gonna be blazing like a CA wildfire due to issues with not completely stock phones and thousands of different configurations causing update glitches. I wouldn't be in such a hurry to update until I see how it goes for the "gotta have it now" sheep taking the first plunge.

Remember OCLF is bad, Mmmkay? Better lagfixes such as Voodoo and ULF
All lag fix should be removed. Otherwise, you will very likely end up with a bricked phone.
You can install Kies Mini now and connect your phone. If your phone is recognized without problem, you're good to go. Kies Mini is your only way to update the firmware.
I can't answer most of your questions, but I will recommend getting Titanium Backup. You can at least backup your app data since you're so concerned about your Angry Birds score. I think you can probably restore that after flash.

Did you copy the TiBU folder to your PC after doing a batch backup of your apps? That's the only way to reliably save a backup.

Not to be a negative Nancy, I understand some want to stay as close as possible to stock, but I'd just wait for a custom ROM to be built that de-bloats, adds speed, better GPS, etc... Cog 4 has a really stock look, and works really well; check it out. And with time there will only be others that will improve on the great ROM's we already have!

The other smart thing to do would be locate the TiBu backup folder on the external SD card. That way even a brick requiring reformatting the internal sdcard partition can be fully recovered from. Just take out the external card while restoring to stock, then root, get TiBu, point it to the reinserted external sd card, and boom, back in business.

You should use OCLF app to remove the lag fix. Don't do factory reset or flash another ROM. You may brick your phone that way. That's why I don't use any lagfix.

Yes You should be a bone stock when updating. No lagfixes, custom kernel, nothing.
All questions for the 2.2 update are in the main thread
Hello everyone. Merry Christmas! Well i left my phone on my bed and left it on bloatware removal. Sister wanted to come a game. didnt know how to get to the game press buttons and gone. No more tw launcher. Calls come in and out as well and messages. I rooted my phone with superoneclick. I thought i recover my phone. well i know i did. But i cant find the file. What should i do. I was thinking about using odin 1.7 and put [ROM-ODIN]T959VUVKB5 Stock + Root and see if that works. Hopefully that would put it back to normal. Or put gingerbread 2.3.3. I was wondering if anyone have fix this problem or have solved it. Any information help. Thank and have a wonderful day.
Factory reset?

Merry Christmas to you! Unfortunately, this sucks for a Christmas gift!
You will need to flash another ROM to restore everything. Maybe you can try pushing it through adb.
The easier way would be to flash a new ROM over it, although you would lose all your data.
You can flash over any Froyo ROM to fix it, since they all have a launcher built into them.
The same applies for GB, but if you're moving from Froyo to GB, you will need the bootloaders from the leaks or the official.
Everything can be found through the forum, so good luck!
I can create a cwm flashable that will restore tw for you.
Just let me know what ROM you are on and what your email address is.

what would you would be better. Flash it to gingerbread or go back to the old thing. When i have it on recovery. I dont have the option to look in my sd card. When i was in recover second time, before i could press anything. The android man pop up with a ! right next to him. i was like uh ooohhh. How do you do a factory reset. Would that work even tho my phone is rooted?
@jager555 If i get that cwm from yea. How would i put it in my phone. I got to put it in download mode?
Power down the phone and use the 3 button combo. Can you get into cwm?

Hello. Yea man i tried. I guess im not that good with this crap. I am some what of a noob. Cmw? That german to me. I have went to usb mode. And what i see in the clockwork mod folder a recovery check point. But when i go to recovery mood i cant get to it. The only option i have in this mode is. REboot system now,
reinstall packages, delete all user data, delete cache data. that is it. no factory reset nothing. I used superoneclick to help me root it. im still on froyo. If i do a kies mini upgrade. you think that would help. Or just use odin and put a different rom. Thank you for helping me man

Well the problem i was having when tw launcher went missing. I found a way to fix it so i can have my icon again. When one of my apps were due for a up date. i was able to make it to the android market. From there i was able to download either adw launcher or ex launcher. After i install ex launcher. I was able to open it through the Android market. And bang. It went into effect. And bang i didnt have a black screen anymore. Icon where there. I dont know what type of side effects will cause. but i will out after a few days of use. This is only a temporary till i grew some ball to change to gingerbread rom. lol For i am a noob. and trying to understand it a lil more. What are the benefit of gingerbread? One major benefit for me is getting my launcher bak. Well I hope this help someone out there. Hopefully i able to change roms in the future. Thank you for reading This and have a happy new year.
Ok so I have a rooted infuse 4G and am a complete noob when it comes to flashin roms and mods... I am still on the froyo 2.2.1and hate it lol. Which brings me to my first query, I know its possible to upgrade my android version to the GB and JB with multiple methods but I'm extremely scared that I'm going to brick my phone. It was some forums on here that helped me decide to root my phone so now I'm hoping that you guys can help me take the next step. So whats the safest, easiest way to upgrade my os.. Odin didnt work and I no longer have a computer, so heimdall is out as well. Oh not sure if this is important but I'm not registered on any network nor have I unlocked my phone's sim. Well that's a start. I really hate froyo 2.2.1 so please if anyone can help I definitely could use it.

From Froyo 2.2.1, there is an official build GB 2.3.6 UCLB3 out for the Infuse.
You will need a computer though. Without a computer to restore your phone to stock from soft bricking, you should not be flashing anything. It may be possible for you to bring your phone to an AT&T store and have them update you if you don't have a PC. You will need a computer to root the GB UCLB3.
Where to start? Read the Q/A as much as you can. Then move into the Development section.

Thanks qkster.. I really appreciate your help. I follow alot of your threads and am so hapoy thst there are infuse users that actually are willing to take the device to the next lvl. Now for another question.
Will it be easier to flash the jellybean 4.1.1 from the froyo or the gb? Or would it be possible to just flash a higher kernel? I'm not syre if that would help me or not, I really want to speed up my infuse and stop it from rebooting so much.

Would it be best to use kies to update to GB? I'm a little concerned as to what would happen to my Infuse all around.. What will need backed up?
I have titanium backup but if the app gets wiped wont i lose all my back-ups? For some reason it wont sync to my dropbox app force closes every time I try. Sorry about all the questions I'm just short on the amount of time I am able to browse threads at the moment but I do have use of a computer for awhile so that kinda helps.
I personally prefer using odin or heimdall. Don't quite trust kies and it often gives issues.
all mayor changes will occur on system partitions. Your internal sd will remain untouched, and there you will titanium backups. Just reinstall TB app later and restore apps, not data.

It doesn't matter if your phone is unregistered and locked. You cannot use SuperOneClick on Gingerbread. What you should do is (this is the Heimdall version):
Flash this rooted version of stock GB:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25526643&postcount=2
You do that and you already have root.
If you want to then graduate on to Jelly Bean you must:
Flash ICS (follow directions carefully!):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24901014&postcount=1
Once you've done that, flash any of the JB ROMs you like, but make sure to read the directions carefully. I strongly recommend that you consult the Super Everything Thread for links to the ROMs and tweaks you need, particularly if you are interested in unlocking your phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1610374
I'm feeling kinda stupid..
Can somebody give me the right link for downloading Heimdall One-click w/root? For some reason I'm not able to get any to work on this computer.. I downloaded the ink provided labeled UCLB3 -DEBLOATED-ODEX - ROOTED - BUSYBOX- STOCK KERNEL on
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25526643&postcount=2
but am unsure if that actually is the one containing Heimdall or just the rom i'm flashing or both.. I'm extremely sorry about my noobishness of just posting all these already answered questions. I've gone and confused myself and have like ten tabs with different threads open please don't hate me. I have a bad habit of asking questions..
Oh and what apps do i need on my phone in order to flash? And I mean absolutely need. I've also noticed that most threads say to format my mounted sd card But i really dont want to do that if i dont need to.
It should all be bundled together. Heimdall is a java based interface so it should just open up. Sorry, it's been a long time and I'm an Odin person!
You don't need any apps on your phone. When you flash, everything on the small partition will be wiped (apps, app data, etc). Flashing will not usually wipe your pictures, videos etc. but it's always a good idea to back up. For now, don't worry about formatting anything. When you get to ICS, you'll need to format as it says in the instructions. Otherwise, if it works, don't fix it!
When you flash ICS and JB, all you need to do is to put the zip files on to your internal SD card (not the one you can take out). You can then flash from CWM (which will already be on your phone - don't download Rom Manager).
Once again thank you all. I'm running GB and loving it. My fiance is shocked at how much help I needed though usually I'm the person everyone comes to with their tech issues LOL. But I absolutely did not want to mess my infuse up. I thought I did but the issue was such a noob mistake that I had to smack myself in the face at my stupidity. Forgot to unzip the cwm ect folder I downloaded. XD not sure I'm ready to try ICS or JB yet though.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda app-developers app
The odd thing is you could have updated to GB through AT&T and used mini kies. But at least you are now rooted and able to go to ICS and JB.
Read the instructions on the next step before moving on.

Kinda wish I would have done it that way... I wanted to get some practice flashing roms tho. I tried to change my boot animation following the steps provided in my boot animation thread then again with the steps in tsqers rom thread I apologise if thats mispelled. I tried updating from sd but get a sign error Can get into download mode but same issue with it being incompatible usb device. I tried holding down the power button for 1 minute and then rebooting no luck there. I tried wiping data/fact. reset,... nothing. I tried wipe cache partition,...still looping.
The loop samsung screen two seconds, black screen 1 1/2 seconds,... over and over and over...

Okay so I have just rooted my Samsung Galaxy Precedent Friday running stock 2.2.2 froyo and no updates available... and loved everything I do. I downloaded a rom made for the precedent and named it Update.zip in the root of the sd card and got the Rom Manager app. Then I clicked install rom from SD Card and picked the rom and click wipe Cache and Backup current rom. Then it booted into recovery mode but then the only selections there are Factory Reset, Clear Cache,Reboot Phone, And some other selection saying something about going into a update.zip but when I click I click it, it says Failed and brung me back to the menu. When I watched people boot a rom from the sd using Rom manager non of those selections came up for them. It just installed the rom. And booted. How come I can't do that? Did I do something wrong. If yes someone please tell me the correct way to install a custom rom on the Samsung Galaxy Precedent.
It sounds like you didn't install a custom recovery?
Did you ever install ClockworkMod or TWRP?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
No i have not. I've tried to install cwm but never understood it and could not do it. I do not have access to a computer so can you please tell me how to do this without a computer?? Thanks
Honestly, I would tell you to read up and understand it before you do anything else. Flashing ROMs is something that can leave your phone a lifeless brick that you can't even turn on. I feel like if you don't understand what you're doing, it's like telling you how to change a capacitor in a PSU, but not how to avoid being shocked by enough to kill you.
You can install CWM using ROM manager and TWRP with goo manager. Most people who have tried both like TWRP better. I'd suggest you read up on both and pick for yourself.
Bricking will cost you a minimum of JTAG repair costs - and that's if someone knows how and will do it for your phone model. They might not. O'er than that, you have to get a new phone.
Not trying to be a raincloud - but just to warn you that it's a bad idea to jump into a shark tank without some protection.

Isn't there a way I can backup my current rom so that if it does brick my phone I can get my phone fixed??
Yes and no.
If you install a custom recovery you can make a backup, yeah - but you can only restore that if you're, well... Able to. You can brick the phone, like I said - to the point it won't even turn on. A backup won't help if you can't even turn the phone on.

Well what roms are out there for the Precedent or even Samsung Galaxy Collection that ur for sure won't do any harm to your phone?
There really is no "for sure".
Please just do a littke reading and learning and you'll understand what you're doing and the process and how you might choose a ROM (I don't know how popular your phone is or was so you'll need to find out if there are even people doing custom work for it). We can't spoon-feed this to you - there's a quote from Jurassic Park about the danger of trying to stand on the shoulders of giants.
This is like learning to drive a car. Once you know how, you can drive all kinds of cars pretty well - but you need to put in that initial time to learn or it's dangerous.
