HP Zeen -> can I get market app on it? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I have an HP Zeen tablet that came with my printer, does anyone know how I can get the Android Marketplace on it?

Market for Zeen
I can pull a few APK. files from market, but download the new SlideMe. Lots of new apps!!

slideme>>??? sucks sry bout it
look buddy take it from me had slide me and had yam and blackmarket all on my hp zeen, but they all suck, g0od to 4shared.kom and download applanet.2.7.3.apk on you zeen and install that only that version works on the zeen and its is that android market it donm't have some or half and slot and sucks it has all of them and the same sking and every app i got from android market its still on this one so best there is and for roor z4root.apk on same spot will give your superuser but it only goes half way with it not all root apps work but root explorer does and rom manager doesn't and neither does titanuiam backup or w.e so far just root exploer but thats better then nothing.... and no sd loader mode found yet for this, i got some weird instruction from hp but i can't get them to work at all.

What instructions did they give you

update on HP Zeen hacks
Just curious if anyone is still building a custom rom for this bad boy. It seems to be a nifty movie/music box and it's small in size to carry around. I have 2 i'm practicing rooting. Keep me posted.

Hi....I installed some apps from my G1 also. But the ones that depend on the market for update or rely on web interaction either won't install, force close or don't work quite right.
Man I sure hope that someone might tackle rooting this device soon. I think it has so much potential for being a useful device.
Rooting the Cruz Micro
Via tether its already rooted. Just adb shelled in and su works fine. So no rooting necessary as I understand it. However I am not a firmware guy so just my experience.
I did notice when I used Cruz Marketplace I got the option for Android Marketplace which has thousands of apps - not sure its Google's but worked well. One item to note is that the CPU in these is not an ARM but MIP's. It hasn't been a problem for me (if I am desperate I will just use a cross compiler to build something) but I have heard it caused issues on other forums for people.

Processor Information/Docs
I was in with ADB playing and got this from cat'ing procinfo.
system type : JZ4760
Hardware : PT701
processor : 0
cpu model : Ingenic Xburst V4.15 FPU V0.0
BogoMIPS : 527.56
wait instruction : yes
microsecond timers : no
tlb_entries : 32
extra interrupt vector : yes
hardware watchpoint : yes, count: 1, address/irw mask: [0x0fff]
ASEs implemented : mxu
shadow register sets : 1
core : 0
VCED exceptions : not available
VCEI exceptions : not available
Googling Igenic will find their site for you. Notice the XBurst in the name. They have a lot of PDF's and information on their FTP site which the website links too. Unfortunately they have great detailed PDF's on the JZ4755 but nothing on the JZ4760. Had me wondering if they took a previous design and just customized a bit for the client.
I do realize of course that a LOT can change in even a small revision of a chip. Anyway - for the 4755 they have cross build tools, linux demos, board designs, nand and usbboot instructions etc.. Even the tool chains to build for the mip's.
Man this is the best XMas present my wife has got me in years
Is there a hack to install Android Market on this Cruz Tablet? Thanks.
Android App Store App
The Cruz Marketplace (cruzmarket_com/mkt/mhome.asp) currently has a app listed 5th from the top as I am viewing it now called:
AndAppStore - Android Market Place App
FREE
This is how I installed mine, and it works like a charm.

(sorry for incomplete URL but am noob and can't post URL's)
I would love to find out if there is a way to port any of the existing ROMs to this device. The touchscreen is not responsive enough with the current firmware, but the keyboard is- that tells me there is the ability to increase responsiveness... other than that, the ability to run auto task killers would help because it looks like most apps stay resident and slow the device down considerably. Two problems that can be fixed by tweaking the firmware I believe- any developers out there with the desire to take this on?
You may want to check what's going on at slatedorid's forum. Google slate droid velocity cruz... cannot post the link
I have one as well.
I really like the device even though other tablets are offering better features in low-end tablets. I checked Best Buy today and it was $169. I got it for $199 last week before CES. I have the 7 inch T10(x) series. The capacitive display is ok for me, its like getting to know a new friend. Lack of security, Android Market, and built in obsolescence of the OS are bummers.
Worst - a smart device that keeps all your stuff but doesn't even have simple password/PIN protection. Doh!
Sorry to burst your bubble, but that app does NOT give you access to the true Android Marketplace. The Android Marketplace is a Google hosted site, and it has thousands of apps. The Android App Store has less than 2k apps, definitely missing some big important ones, like the Pandora app for Android.
There ARE hacks to get the Android Market for the Reader, but so far I've not found a hack for the Tablet (and yes, there IS a difference).
Good luck to the OP. If anyone comes across a hack for the Tablet, I would love to know.

ugh
I got the T408, i have tried twice to install market and failed both times. I am one-click-rooted as it has the 2.3 Gingerbread... easy enough... now i just cant get half the apps i want from Amazon, or Applanet.
Google Market on Cruz Velocity T410
OK so my son got the T410 for christmas, I've got it rooted and am working on a push for the google market and frameworks. Should have it pretty soon. I'll post it as soon as I do.
UPDATE:
I will go through this quickly as it was actually pretty easy. This is how I did it, I had no problems so I would not anticipate any, however standard disclaimer, I can't be held responsible for anything you do to your device, I am simply sharing my experience. What you choose to do is up to you. I didi this on the T410, but I would expect it to work the same on the T408
1. Rooted with gingerbreak and installed superuser and busybox over it (search for it)
2. Placed the app folder (found inside the gapps.zip attached to this post) on my internal sd card.
3. Installed the apps in this order:
I DID NOT OPEN ANY OF THESE APPS AFTER INSTALLATION, ONLY CHOOSE DONE AND MOVE ON TO THE NEXT ONE.
onetimeinitializer.apk
setup.apk
googleservicesframework.apk
gmail.apk
maps.apk
talk.apk
vending.apk
AFTER THE LAST ONE IS INSTALLED, I REBOOTED MY TABLET.
Upon reboot I let the tablet fully cycle the sd card checks and all that, once I swiped to unlock the home screen, I was met with a decision asking whether to use Launcher, of Setup Wizard to complete the action.
CHECK THE BOX TO USE ACTION AS DEFAULT AND CHOOSE LAUNCHER
4. I then opened the google market, signed in with my gmail account and once it had synced my device with the google servers (yes WIFI must be on and connected, I had to say it because you just never know) I had access to the market.
I have downloaded a few apps and have had no problems, it is an older version of the market and I don't have market updater installed, but I may try that later.
I have also noticed when looking in the account and sync area, it will sync my gmail, but not my contacts or calender, I will have to look at that later as well.
Hope this helps

Was Able to root my wife's T408 as well with gingerbreak and have market 3.3.4 running on it now.
First I installed apps in the order you did had done. The version of Market is dated for sure but I was able to update to 2.2.6 via the stock OI File Explorer. Anything later then that seemed to crash. I then used SU & File Explorer to r/w the /system/apps/ folder , moved the newer 3.3.4 Market APK there and installed from that location along with a system reboot. Once rebooted the new market showed up right away. Only issue is some apps list as not compatible with device but having my wife use her Sidekick 4g to download and back up the app and email it to her tablet Netflix , Firefox , and many others ran with no issue even with Market saying not compatible.

I have noticed that as well. Seems like since the Market added the ability for apps to be device specific that alot of apps don't show up for devices that aren't supported. I am playing a little with the build.prop file and when I get it correct I will let you know. Even root explorer would not show up in the market, but I purchased it from amazon and Im using it to drop apps into place.
Android Market - I used the JGM ROM, rooted with z4root, and had blank Market. Accessing market via laptop showed my Cruz listed, but no serial number. Gave up, but then by luck a week later, I went to the Market on my laptop, found an App and selected my Cruz as the device to download it to. 2 hours later, sure enough the Market was working, and that select app downloaded.
It almost seems like you have to prime the market first for the Cruz via a computer...

Getting android 2.1 on netbook

Hi, i have a acer aspire d255 which has a dual boot with android 1.6, i can download apps and they work but some like angry birds wont install as its 1.6.
Does anyone have any ideas how to get 1.6 upgraded to 2.1?
any ideas?
here is froyo http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=872186&highlight=netbook
Acer D255
I'm also quite keen on any info or hacks for this device. I've got a Acer One D255
with Android 1.6 I barely ever boot into it but has the potential of being quite useful. I'm also quite annoyed there
isn't a market app as this is 95% of android usability, without it there doesn't seem to be much you can do with it.
So what I'm asking is.....
how do I upgrade this version of android.
or how do I install the Market app.
or any other method of getting apps on it.
I'll be keeping a close look at the link posted above, as this may provide some level of success too.
hi so far the only way i have found is to use appstore or apk files installed with a file manager
i have the d255 been playing with it for a few days now the android is1.6 ot the best in the world but it works the down side is there is no market but i can run apps on it if i insall the apk file and it runs some that my wildfire cant it will run live wallpapersand the wifi works with no probs
so what i was woundering is there anybody working on making this better?
and is there anything the rest of use who have the d255 can do to help
thanks
phil
What kind of apps have u been able to install? I tried installing ADW launcher (the only app I tried) but it gave an error parsing the package.
Is the D255 just running the "ordinary" phone android 1.6?
So I've been playing around with it today and I found that you can install .apks that you normally find in the market. I assumed the version running on here was 1.6. I managed to install ADW launcher (gives much more customization) and a lot of other apps. Right now I am going to try installing the Gapps found here: http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Latest_Version#Google_Apps
I also found that the App Center found on AndoidPIT works and allows you to download apps and install them (at least the one app that I clicked on ). Things like astro and Root Explorer also work. I pulled most of these apps from my phone and installed them and most of them work fine.
It's not android 2.1 (or 2.2 or 2.3 ) but it does make the whole thing a lot more usable.
EDIT: I just read the post above and people already managed to do the same I figured I would give my 2 cents anyway.

Nextbook Next7 and Next6 Custom ROM's

I am hoping to get a custom ROM made for both the Next6 and Next7, so if anyone would like to help here are the factory ROM's.
http://www.multiupload.com/6BY8BVS5BJ---Next7's Factory ROM

Right now my friend and I are working on making the Next6 have a full read/write partition with permanent root access.
I'm interested. The Next6 is on sale at Big Lots for $149...
I'm looking to pick one up. Please keep m posted!

I just got mine yesterday and subscribed to this thread. Please keep us informed.
Li'm currently counting down the minutes till biglots opens. in a rush to cash my check, and grab my new cheapo tablet, to be home in time to go to my kids dr appointment.
anyone got a full list of specs on the next6?
EDIT: z4root works perfectly. Now I'm waiting on this ota firmware update to download.
It feels sluggish compared to my hd2 but I expected that. But it does render HD video quite nicely. Rooting was a breeze, and if you pick it up at biglots, be sure to splurge 15 extra for an 8gb SD card.
I spoke to the company today because my OTA has been trying to download for 2 days.
Apparently the OTA only changes the Boarder Books to a different carries since Boarders is closed. IT DOES NOT UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE OR OS.
Please let us know of any ROMS available on this device that would be very helpful.

Were you able to get a perminent root with z4root? I could only get a temporary root to work. What tools to use for a perminent solution
Got my next6 a day ago. Thanks all for the BigLots tip.
i think the way the image is stored on the tablet you'll have to flash a rom that is already rooted. Im not very familiar with cooking roms but i know you'll have to use afptool to unpack the image make the changes recreate the crc for the image and repack it.
From what I've been able to glean from frantic web searching, the system partition is cramfs and is read only. Temporary root only.
Also, its possible to access the recovery menu using adb reboot recovery, but its not of much use since the thing only has two dpad buttons.
Sent from my HD2

I am very interested in this also ; I have tried to run some of the next 2 & 3 roms on this device (and they boot) but they don't really work right (IE: the touch screen doesn't work)
hopefully we can get this going!
i've got the rom dumped, just having a spot of bother mounting a cramfs file under ubuntu.
since i've last posted i found out a bit more about the hardware involved, and how its more or less a generic 7 inch rockchip tablet, minus a few buttons, which means a good majority of the work has already been done.

bit of difference is the rkupdater program doesn't work unless you can get the tab into a flasher mode of some sort. However, if you just drop the update.img in the sdcard root and insert the card while the tab is running, it seems to kick into the updater properly.
hold down the right hand arrow
with the Pad turned off hold the right hand arrow to put the tablet into update mode ; then you can use the RKAndroidBatchUpgrade.exe..... (you do need the USB driver - found on the first page of the next2 next3 thread)

thanks. figured out through trial and error if i held both facebuttons and hit the reset while it was plugged up, it'd get into update mode.
your way needs less buttons. still at a loss because while i can dump the update.img and extract it, i cant seem to open up the system.img inside of it.
any suggestions? i pulled it using rkdump.
EDIT: nvm got it, had to pull the system.img from the device separately and add it back to update.img
long story short, i've got market, will be working on root next.

here ya go, (Next6)regular rom + market, still haven't got root worked out quite yet.
is this for the next6 or 7?
Oh I see now this is a rom for a next6
Next6 Base rom for editing
heres a stock copy of update.img with an editable system.img if you feel like adding your own apps or customizing it a bit further.
happy modding
I got one of these bad boys today and its a pretty decent little fellow.
I think with a root and well made custom rom it can really shine.
EDIT, does anyone know a way to change the icons they used? I dont really care for them because they look warped and garrish. I did manage to replace the launcher with launcherPro, "adw would crash and default to a debug launcher".
Also does anyone know how one could update SAM? Can I just reinstall the apk and it replace teh factory installed one? Also is there any better marketplaces than SAM? It seems kinda limited and lacking.
I was wondering if it's possible to upgrade the next6 from 2.1 to 2.2/3~
I'm not requesting it or anything as I personally don't know anything about android or how the next6's rom works.
Thanks
I believe it has to be rooted before you can upgrade the firmware to another version.
Also I have noticed a issue with the custom rom above. I cannot download any apps on the marketplace for some reason. Anyone know how I could clear its cache or reset this device?
EDIT: If I do a "factory reset" though the privacy section in settings, it seems to fix the market. Of course this completely wipes the device, also the market seems to break the same way again, extremely easily.
Basically you can download a few apps, go to the homescreen, then come back to find that you magically cannot download ANY applications. Ive tried killing the market app using the advance task manager, ive tried clearing the markets cache, and even restarting the device. The only thing that works is completely restoring the device. I am hoping that you will be able to fix it, or tell me how to fix it. XD
I installed the following applications. Not sure if this matters, but it seems like market breaks when I make ADW the default launcher.
ADW Launcher
Nook
Also I have a SD card in the unit.
EDIT:
I have rooted out the cause of the problem, changing the default homescreen/launcher seems to screw with market. So while you can install and use another launcher, you CANNOT set it as the default without it screwing up the android market.
EDIT:
Humm, well color me confused, because last night I managed to switch the home launcher without it interfearing with market. But this morning when I booted up the device I could not download any applications. Could it be possible that it is deleting key files when I restart the device?

[Q] Ematic Funtab

So I just bought my children each a tablet 2 different brands. The one I am having a problem with is an Ematic Funtab (pink and purple silicone kid like tablet). I have searched high and low on the web and have had no success.
First of all it is a 2.2 Android Froyo, and when I try and go onto her fav website (the whole reason I got her this was to play this game and leave my computer alone, lol), it is called animal jam, it tells me I need to download Adobe Flash, and when I try to download Flash, it tells me my device does not support it.
I was told to try and get the Flash app from the market, and here lies problem 2! It is preloaded with some generic ''app market'' with a pic of the android avatar, and another market, Appoke or something, and they both suck (because they are not Google Play), and do not have Flash, or much else for that matter! So I added (thru the browser, website, and email) the Amazon Market, but when I tried to download any apps I was told I needed and sd card, so now I am waiting on that to arrive to try that again.
So I was wondering about this whole ''rooting'' thing? If I root this device will I be able to add Flash and Google Play? Also, since there is so little info on the internet about this Ematic Funtab, does anyone know how I would be able to root this specific device? And after the device is rooted what version of Android will it be, still 2.2 or what? And what do I do after it is rooted? Like do I have to install the OS or something?
I know this is a lot, but if you can answer even one of these questions or point me in the right direction my baby would really appreciate it, because I got this on ebay and it is going to cost more money we don't have to return it, she used her birthday money :crying:

ZEKI TBD753B Jelly Bean 4.1.1 WARNING

Just bought ZEKI 7 inch dual core TBD753B witH jelly bean 4.1.1
$ 129.99 at Sears and Best Buy
Specs
Amlogic Dual 1.5GHz Cortex-A9 processor
1GB Ram DDR3
Color TFT-LCD 5 points capacitive touch screen (800 x 480)
Jelly Bean 4.1.1
Storage Capacity : 8GB
SD Card Slot : Yes
Front Facing Camera
Micro USB and mini HDMI
WIFI
Be careful The Jelly Bean firmware has tons of bugs
especially not waking up after sleep / power off.
You need to hit reset button most of the time.
Its not rooted and cant be rooted through the ICS/JB Universal rooting available here at XDA.
I have exchanged it twice and it still has the same problems
After first set up it comes up with "update available" message.
The update is to repair the Update server connection and youtube.
However after update The connection to update server keep failing.
Been through so many factory reset through recovery (Vol - and Power) and the settings with Tech Support and nothing help with the problems.*
Tablet also has screen sensitivity issue
Landscape Top Left corner
Portrait Top Right corner
Until they provide fix do not buy.
Zeki Android 4.0.3 Tablet TB782B is much better than the TBD753B Jelly Bean brother.
UPDATE
For anyone who look for root
attach below
update.zip from Zeki tech support (also work for trio jelly bean tablet)
and Vending (google play store for jelly bean)
It is for Zeki TBD753B and TBDB763B (bluetooth version)
Build no 4.1.1 20121204
Root
Copy the update zip into sd card
Insert the card into the tablet.
Hold vol - and press power button to go to recovery.
Release the vol- button once you enter recovery
navigate with vol button , and power to select
select apply update from ext
Select the update zip you copy earlier
once its done reboot
Google Play Store
AUTOMATIC way without root (wont survive factory reset)
The tablet is google ready you can install Google play store without root by simply tapping the vending apk.
MANUAL WAY to install google play with root (this will survive factory reset)
use file explorer/manager ie.. ES file explorer, Root explorer etc
You can use any file manager that you want and
ITS A BASIC ANDROID KNOWLEDGE you need to mount the system folder into writable before copying or change permission.
copy the vending apk into system/app and change permission into RW R R
and important REBOOT.
UPDATE 2
Due too many emails
let me try to explain as basic as possible
ZEKI tablet already has Google Services Framework installed you dont need to re-install it again.
If you install Google Play store by flashing Gapps zip make sure it doesnt include Google Services Framework APK on the zip files.
Otherwise you will encounter too many FC later on. Dont ask me about GApps.zip since i dont use those methods.
In order for you to access, copy or modify into/on system folder
you need to enable or mount the system folder as writable and your phone/tablet need to be rooted
You can use any file manager apps you want
ie.. ES File Explorer, Root Explorer, Astro File Manager or etc
Below is example for ES file explorer
Tap options
tap settings
Scroll down and select Root Settings
Put a Check mark for Root explorer and mount file system
You have to figure out with the file manager apps you use how to mount the File System as writtable
I dont know every single apps there
Try to GOOGLE it.
I have not had a problem with this. Seems to be a good buy for a cheap tablet.

they put it on sale now for $ 99 from Kmart.
According to Kmart too many returns.
I guess you are lucky.
One more problem the screen on landscape side its top left hand side corner and on portrait side top right corner is less sensitive to touch.
Mostly you have to keep pressing your thumb.
you can try to download ILITEK Touch Utility and test it.

Until they provide fix do not buy.
Zeki Android 4.0.3 Tablet TB782B is much better than the TBD753B Jelly Bean brother.

I got the identical tablet from Sears for cheap with reward points. The hardware specs got me to buy it. The tablet really is a headache and firmware locked without root on some Zeki build of JB 4.1.1. After a week of frustration I finally rooted the tablet. Search the XDA forums for Crystal_Root.zip. I confirm it works on the TBD753B FID:BN. It also installed SuperUser and BusyBox. I tried tons of automated scripts, one click unlockers, LiveSuit, and have schooled myself on FastBoot/ADB. None of them worked. Crystal Root took about twenty seconds. If I could do things again, I would not buy this tablet. Spend another hundred and get a Galaxy, but at this point it's personal (this thing WILL eventually do what I want it to). I'm now on to customize boot and OS. Will post results/findings.......
Update: I'm pretty sure this is a rebranded/packaged Zenithink C71 Capacitive manufactured by MID. Generic China garbage, even I got ripped paying $70 for it.....
ZEKI TBD753B Jelly Bean 4.1 - Totally Disagree with Warning - total disservice
Some background on me:
I have all Mac's and Apple devices and had been anti anything otherwise.
The other day my youngest daughter was going through the newspaper flyers looking at toys and such and the K-Mart flyer caught my eye. This Zeki TBD753B was in there for $89.00 USD. I had been considering iPad Mini's to replace their aged iPhone 3GS being used as an iPod touch and a 1st Gen iPod Touch (which to replace with a modern 2013 iPod touch is going to set me back $230 plus. Also for $13 bucks extra for 1 year of worry free coverage (drops, water, cracked screen.. whatever) It gets damaged, I get a new one!
I researched all the apps available for the Zeki that the kids had in iOS and found their counterpart in the AMAZON Store (most people complain that the store is weak vs the Google Play Store). I find this contrary, in fact it seems they only offer the best apps vs Apples gross amount or terrible ones that you have to weed through to find something that is actually not redundant and useful.
I had low expectations on Android for starters so anything would be good if it met those standards. I am happy to say that I am actually blown away. These devices are really solid little tablets. I will agree that there are some touch pad bugs, but maybe the sensitivity issue is because I wanted to test drive it and left the protective cover on it (It takes a couple taps for icons to respond), but when they do activate how this device works is really pretty great.
I have loaded the following so far:
Netflix
Sketchbook
Drop Box
Pandora
Fruit Ninja
Bejeweled
The apps are elegant and well designed.. infact some are better than apple counterparts.
The screen is nice and tight. very bright.
The web Browsers (Chrome and Opera) are solid, very well designed and legible.
Seriously considering flipping my iPad for one of these. Seriously impressed. Do not let the only reviews out there skew your judgement. Every place has a 30 day return policy. Get it, try it and make your own decision.
It's not a bad tablet for kids and people looking to just have a tablet, I was looking for one that would easily customize or modify period. My experience with Amazon Vs Google was 180 degrees as described here. Amazon results for device info were two, Google over a thousand. This tablet has been repacked by so many companies it's not funny. Even after examining it's inside via ABD, the device itself returns vague results about what is actually going on, not sure exactly what model it is. Another calculation is MID x753... I've found identical tablets selling out of china for $40 (10+ minimum order). Still have yet to get gapps functioning, into week two, rooted and hit a wall. I guarantee Sears will charge a restocking fee or only offer store credit if I attempt returning it, usage is visually noticeable. You have to read the fine print about returns for online electronic purchases.

How would one get Google Play Store on the device?
Just curious, does anyone know how one would get google play store on these devices, if it is possible at all?

That is the million dollar question. So far my answer is, you can't. First you'll need root access, I described that above. Put crystal zip on SD card, do not unzip file. Shut tablet down. Boot by holding volume down and power buttons. Should enter recovery, select update from EXT, select crystal file, then reboot now, you will see android updating message and then have superuser and busy box installed. That gets you about 50% there. I have tried to flash gapps without luck using the correct files. I believe the problem with this device to be the firmware. It's for ICS. I am thinking about rolling back OS to 4.0.3 and trying from there. The TBD782 is almost identical, thinking of trying a modded ROM I found in XDA forums. Basically that gets you to where I am. I believe the device is actually a momo9 variant/clone with allwinner a10 compatible chip. The manual I downloaded from above manufacturer (I can't post links yet) is identical to the TBD753B. You can also get a working version of livesuit from them. Hope any of that helps. I will report back when I have a working method.

I have google play on the tablet via the google play apk just search for it. It doesn't work but its enough to allow certain features to work such as signing in on the youtube app. Install google services as well. I installed 1mobile market t it does a really good job of keeping apps up to date. The getapk market has alot of apps as well as the tablified market which can use the store of your choice (including 1mobile market). As far as buying apps from google play I still haven't been able to get the store to launch without crashing I will keep working at it and post updates.
PS: The touch bug is annoying as $^%*

First thing I tried was getting the vending apk. Negative with results. Manufacturer didn't purchase a license from Google, so your locked out of the free service, however you can have access to search, chrome, and the OS stamped Google (upper right corner, yet to remove). It all totally makes sense to me. You'll need root access to correctly install gapps, my fading hope to get this thing working with Google. Again I have to point at the buggy firmware in the device, its the same for all devices from manufacturer, with the only variable being the camera. To use all of Google's services, the firmware has to go. The issue for me has come to replacing it with something working that does not render the device inoperable.
Ok, for those of you returning these. The wifi on my device tanked 11 days from purchase. Only modifications I made to device were: root, attempted gapps install. I do not believe I destroyed the device wifi capability. I tried to reflash the original FW from recovery, NO GO, superuser stayed in the app drawer also root settings. I tried all three methods of data restoration available with the device, it half restored them. I did get Sears to exchange it. NOW, the good part. They exchanged it for another used one. I know the replacement was used because the 'factory sealed' label had been placed on the box over a broken one, also the headphones had been split apart. The original unit the plastic wires for left and right earbuds were molded together. I also watched the associate slap a clearance sticker on the box of the broken one I handed him, with a 50% price reduction. So if your retuning the units, you are quite possibly getting refurbished or flat out used units as exchanges. Now I do have all the info from previous unit build and will compare it to this one's. I shall try again, however the galaxy is $170 and I am investing waaaay to much time. This one breaks and Samsung it is. . .
First device build: 20121204
This device build: 20121213
Root Settings unavailable from settings menu (yes they are completely gone), they were visible but unable to select on previous unit until it was rooted.

Yes you can use whatever file manager apps you want.
and of course you need to mount system folder as RW its a basic function to copy or tweak system folder.
You can use ES file explorer, Root explorer or whatever file manager apps you want to use.
Glad it work for you
BTW if you want to fix the touch screen sensitivity issue
try to download SGS Touchs creen Booster from the play store.
It help a bit
About a month ago, my dad told me he purchased an Android Jelly Bean tablet at Fingerhut for 149.99. I was a bit skeptical and warned him that it might be a crappy imitation with zero Google Play.
I was right about the Google Play part of it but, to be honest, I am rather impressed by the overall performance of it. True, the resolution is not up to Nexus 7 standards and the built-in speakers are somewhat average, it does offer a microsd card slot with 32 GB support and HDMI. All that was left was to root it and get down to business of installing Google Play and Nova Launcher to make it a Nexus clone.
Easier said than done. It took me a week of using everything from ZhuoDaShi to PolaroidAIO combined with ADB with no luck. I was about to give up until I found Crystal Root. Amazing stuff....took about 20 seconds, rebooted and finally rooted. My dad is now a proud owner of Nexus 7 clone. Of course, there are no custom roms but the layout is so basic it really doesn't need any. I just added Nova Launcher, removed the stock launcher using a root uninstaller and applied an ad-blocking host file using ES File Manager.
I found myself so impressed that I will be also purchasing one later this month! :good:

This is how I got it to work, dude. I used ES File Manager, gave it root permissions, copied over the Vending.apk to system/app, changed permissions to RW - R - R, then you NEED to reboot the tablet.
It will then show the, "Android is optimizing system apps" screen and that's it!
