Hey all,
Of the people who use Google Voice, what have your experiences been? I have used every variant of the leaked GB ROMs available as of this point, 8:40PM MT, and GV won't work with any of them. Having GV installed, it will not load up my account when I select my main Google account on setup. Going back to any Froyo ROM it will work fine but GB is no-go. I have heard some people saying it won't work and other saying it works fine.
GV is my main method of SMS since I have my vzw SMS turned off and blocked so if I run a GB ROM, I get no SMS. I have installed GV both from Titanium and directly from the market with no luck. Has anybody figured out a fix for this? I know this is all still very beta and it could just be a flaw in the leak but I really would love to have some Netflix.
- Glitch
P.S. Yes, I have wiped cache and dalvik and still nothing.
In the same boat
I am in the same boat - 100% GV SMS realiant (no VZW SMS at all) and have had the same issues. I've tried installing from TB, the Market... everything I could think of and haven't had any luck. Because of this, and the fact that one of the other apps I use daily (VZ FiOS TV Remote Control App) does'nt work, I think I am going to be headed back to Froyo until the official release comes out.
It seems like every time I set up a new ROM, it takes me forever to get everything set back up and I always miss something, contacts are missing, apps go all wonky... I used to backup all my apps and data, but a lot of the time the new ROM will download many of the apps I had, so when I restore the backup of my Apps, it screws everything all up.
So I guess my questions is... Whats the most sufficient, easiest, most thorough way of restoring all apps and whatnot on a new ROM?
For the basics use the market app to backup your sms to google cant remember what its called, backup your contacts to google (highly recommend) that way you will never loose them.
For apps i would only ever backup downloaded apps with titanium backup pro. System apps can be a pain in the ass to restore.
Other than that everything else is fairly easy...

Hmm... Ive never gone about backing up SYSTEM apps, but like paid apps, that Ive bought and backed up, seem to get all jacked when I restore or reinstall them. Ive tried a few different methods of restoring my system and never get it to go smoothly. Didnt know if there was an easier way. Thanks for the info!
You might want to upon first boot of the new ROM, bypass initial setup with the tap corners trick, restore apps with Titanium, then resume the setup process. Market will see your apps as already having been installed and not bugger everything up.
Good idea! Hadnt thought of that. Will try with my next rom. Thanks! Anymore tips out there?
First thing I thought of was nandroid backup using clockworkmod on a rooted device. I have restored my phone countless times and everything restores exactly how it was.
sometime i got errors while restoring with CWM..
Titanium is still the recommended.
When I first started out, I actually had to make a list and check it off. Eventually, I found some apps that would cover those items (Titanium, etc), but still even with that I have to manually go in and do a few settings. MIUI ROMS have a backup program (I used MIUI on my HD2) and it seemed to do a decent job.
I usually keep a current back up of all apps from market(not system apps) made from my backup pro. Everything else gets a fresh start.
When I switch android versions ei, from gingerbread to ics, nothing gets restored, everything is a fresh install from market.

Was it through CWM rom manager or manual recovery mode? I mean did you install a kernel that installed cwm or did you install rom manager? After a couple weeks walking around blind I figured out that flashing the right kernel gets cwm to work without problems.
Restoring system settings is a big no no. It is just asking for trouble as with each update the source code is changed and then you are restoring outdated settings that may or may not be there.
TIBU is still the main app restore program. As for restoring settings that is never advices. Well unless you like troubleshooting random errors lol
Thanks for ALL the replies! Some stuff I hadnt thought of in here, and some stuff to try. If anyone else has any more info, please feel free to share. I have heard that restoring settings is asking for trouble, so luckily Im not too picky about those. I really only change the haptic feedback and stuff off the bat, anyway. It also sucks losing all my WiFi networks and having to have all my friends dig up their network passwords.
Anyway, gonna try out some of this stuff today as Im sick of the ROM I just flashed. Still waiting on MIUI getting that MMS workin

I concur, system restores after updates, different roms etc are a nightmare lol. It might be a pain in the a$$ but i ALWAYS start afresh after each flash and never use the same data image lol
Was wondering if anyone has made a comprehensive list of bloatware that is safe to uninstall for the I727R yet? I've used a couple of roms, and they're great, just not as stable as the stock.
Would love to remove *all* the bloat from my device, just don't know which ones are 100% safe to trash yet....
Also, from what I've read, I can just change the kernel if I want to oc, right? What's a good kernel for that? Da_og?

Two that come to mind off the top of my head
Da_G oc kernal
or
faux123 oc kernal
I've had no problems with either one, but only have limited experience with them.
And those are pretty stable on the Rogers offering? Sorry for the 20 questions, but I'm a novice at best with Android... and this device in particular doesn't seem to have a lot of material that lends itself to inspire absolute confidence in someone of my level of understanding, lol

I have not tried these kernals with stock rogers gingerbread, but from what I have read around these forums it sounds fairly stable.
if it were me I would just try it; and see if you can get it nice and stable thats the fun of flashing around.

If you think it might be bload but you aren't sure just go into titanium backup and freeze it. It is the exact same but if you run into problems later just unfreeze it and its right back on your phone. If it turns out you really dont need it then just unistall it
I'm running the ATT bln mod kernel on ATT hardware but a rogers rom and I have no issues.

So no one has made a bloat list for the I727R?

Hope no one minds, but I'm gonna keep this bumped till a list is made, our I compile a good list to share... Might be hard though... The urge to flash is getting pretty severe

After flashing the TPC v3 rom, here are my list of frozen apps. I've also got a lot of third party apps to replace stock launcher/dialer/keyboard/etc.... so I've frozen the stock ver of those.
I'll repeat the advise stated earlier in the thread, use Titanium Backup to freeze the apps instead of removing them completely until you're sure you don't need those.

Nice list
One suggestion: TwLauncher, I'm pretty sure if you were to do a factory reset phone would crash after the inital setup(language blah blah).
Second thing, I've frozen secphone.apk for some time with no ill effects(not sure what it does). Could be screenshot service?
big thanks tom! Now if I can only figure out why this bleeding device keeps frying SD cards... 3rd one onside of a month! WTF?!?

Thanks! I've just frozen secphone as well.
Groovy, thanks xda, tom. I was holding off flahing any new roms... but with the card issues, as well as reading the rave reviews of TPC's rom, I'm going to give it a run tonight.
Also, I'll name my first partition after you~
Great
Great list - just rooted, purchased TB, and froze almost all of the above mentioned (except TwLauncher and related).
Seemed to free up a lot of available ram on my SGS2 LTE.
Next step would be trying out 'roms', which I have next to none knowledge of.
Or just wait for the official OTA update coming up in a month or two...
honestly rogers doesnt put as much bloatware on the phone as att does to their version. I removed more Samsung bloatware then rogers bloatware when I was running stock. I'm now running CocaColaClassic and it works flawlessly on my Rogers GS2LTE i727r plus when he updates his rom he includes a update zip. I've tried every single rom and thats the best, cyanogenmod 7 is the second best rom available. Though this is my opinion. Also I use LauncherPro instead of twlauncher (find it much more efficient and faster)
Whats better on Coke than TPCs? Just curious

Freezing apps with TB doesn't free up any memory:
here is a relevant excerpt from TB Technical Guidline
17. Does “freezing” apps free space from phone memory ?
No, it doesn’t. The “frozen” app remains on the phone with its data, it’s just that the app gets completely disabled until you “defrost” it.
I'm a HUGE fan of MIUI.
No 4g. we all know that.
Miui.us is currently testing a build w/ wimax working and I'm sitting on my hands waiting for that..
In the meantime, I sometimes have a need to tether. SOMETIMES - i want to do it on 4g.
I want to have a backup nandroid of a CM mod to do this, as well as some other things (like *#*#gpsclrx#*#* which fixes all my gps problems in an instant).
Going w/ gummy as it comes w/ a file explorer and terminal emulator by default.
Heres my question: when I'm in this ROM I want NOTHING syncing.
Sure, google is easy - don't add the account.
However, I want to avoid say getting text messages while I'm tethering. It MIGHT be important enough that I DON"T want to lose it after going back to current ROM.
Is this possible? Can I still somehow get mobile 4g but not receive SMS? (I'm alright w/ calls not going through as well).
Of course, this all becomes mute when the wimax version is released or some amazingly awesome feature comes out on a regular AOSP or CM based ROM (or sense I guess but wtf runs sense on a nexus? lol)

use titanium to backup any sms that come in or use this app to back them up and restore once you go back: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync&hl=en
My experience has been that SMS restore apps wipe the existing messages and sometimes restore in wrong order. Would render restoring the few texts more damaging than not.
Do you know is this does?
Also I've never used titanium for text.what do you backup? Messaging app data? Go SMS data?

SMS backup that I linked is awesome, it doesnt overwrite (ie: delete existing) and it detects dupes as well. the one caveat is that it does not restore MMS, but it does back them up, so at least they are in email.
you also want to check all the backup and restore settings before you do anything. one thing you can do is take a nandroid backup, backup via SMS backup, wipe data, and restore through SMS backup to see what you get. you can always restore your nandroid if it doesnt work.
in TB, yeah if you go to the backup tab/button, i think its listed as [SMS/MMS] prefs or something like that.
Hi P999 users. Ive been experimenting with the Eagles Blood ICS ROMs and wanted to post some of my findings. I am not allowed to post in the relevant developer area where a detailed report would be useful so I will just post my feelings about the ROM's here for the next few weeks, until I am allowed to post more useful information.
I started out on the CM9 version of Eagles Blood, and then switched to a nightly AOSP ROM two weeks ago. I wanted to find out with AOSP was all about. This build felt very smooth. However crashes and force closing have cropped up in the past few days and this made me feel uncomfortable with the ROM's stability.
An update was released on the 20th so I felt the need to backup with Titanium and install the new ROM.
While installing the new ROM I read a notice in the changelog which confirmed my suspicion about the frequent new force closing. It seams there was some file corruption happening in previous builds... Maybe this was the reason mine was having issues??? How do I feel about this?
Anyways, after installing the newer ROM, and restoring my backup things were out of whack. Something about the restore had left some systems settings unusable and my Data connection was not working. Everything was force closing, even the android keyboard. I re-wiped and re-installed the ROM and backups with the same issues.
I decided to go back to build 4.0.3 and things have been good since. I had a feeling my Titanium backup was ruining my AOSP installations so this time I took a selective approach to restoring apps and did not restore system settings. My data connection is working again and my apps are working well. (Just to be clear I went back to the CM9 based version of EGB and not the AOSP version I was using which became unstable over time)
I do appreciate the AOSP development on behalf of EGB team but will be staying with the CM9 build for stability sake until file corruption issues are dealt with.
And that's how I feel about that.
the file corruption issue is your issue though, how are they supposed to fix your backup from your phone? Don't restore the settings and system, just apps. I don't get what the big issue is...
good job

MT3G thanks writing verbatim the solution I wrote into the OP.
*edit* the file corruption issue and the titanium backup fiasco are not related. It is my understanding that EGB team is aware of corruption cause by the early ASOP release and that they are working on it. I've decided not to use the AOSP version until they take care of it. (Solution / Workaround #1)
Maybe this is a big issue for someone who would not make the connection between restoring a system backup and the data connection not working anymore. I felt this was good information and that's why I posted it (Solution / Workaround #2)
Yeah that's why I never back up or restore any type of system settings; always gets you trouble.
Glad to see you're a problem solver , we don't have much of those here.
exactly my thoughts, most people wold just freak out and say the rom was stupid or something, I read the post as he was saying he is going to wait for EB team to fix the issue where as it isn't going to be "fixed" lol. Unless you are updating the same rom or a rom that hasn't been extremely updated then it's possible for it work out okay. But using cm7 backing up and then going to cm9(4.0.x) and restoring is going to be a no go probably. i'm with Buru though except I just stay away from TB all together, I only use about 12 apps and no games.
update
Just a quick update. Its been almost 3 weeks on the EGB CM9 build 4.0.3. I've been very happy with it. Occasionally I install updates and I get strange behavior after. I've found that rebuilding permissions after an update is a good practice.

I have restored email (with all accounts, data and app) as well as saved wifi locations before. I believe both of those are system settings and they never caused problems.

Try using GoBackup for apps, contacts (if you don't sync to your gmail), and some system settings. I like it more than TB. I'm not saying it won't cause FC's and that's because I don't know. But it might work better.
