So, I am the happy new owner of a shiny new g-tablet. I tried the z4root apk, nada. Tried the UniversalAndRoot.. nope. I think that the problem is that the svn builds marked as build FRF91/hudson-20101030-203236 contain the patch that fixes these superuser hacks from working (aka Froyo 2.2.1). You can find your version/release by trying to run the TAP Ui Update. If you see -that- version, then ...
Good news. I got it all working using the VISIONary+ unroot. Basically, google for 'modaco visionary' and grab the apk for visionary+. Then you can sideload it either by sdcard or 'adb push com.modaco.visionaryplus.r14.apk /sdcard/'
When you run it, you have to do the temproot first. This is so that it knows it has a chance of working. After this works, run the permroot. The tablet will reset, and presto bingo. Little superuser skull and crossbones in the application list.
*PHEW* This had me worried for an hour or so, right after I got my shiny new tablet. Thought I would share the love

Is this a newer Froyo version that the ones that were initially released? Others have posted that the z4root worked for them. By any chance does flash work on your GTablet?
Since the only way I could not get it to root unless I used visionary+, it's definitely a newer build I would guess. SuperOnClick, z4root and UniversalAndRoot all failed. So. Yes, that would be my guess.
Sadly, flash is jst as borked without editing the build.prop. Market is all installed and everything is good with the world. Well, sans Angry Birds

An alternative is to flash clockwork, then load any of the ROMs. They all have root.

So today I decided to root my phone. I want to be able to use WiFi tethering without paying their ridiculous monthly fee, so I came here and read all I could about rooting my phone.
I downloaded the "Charge Kit V2" and proceeded with the instructions to install the "EE4stock_DXC.tar.md5" file to my phone. Everything worked as advertised and was completed in less than three minutes. I boot the phone, select the reboot option, and everything appears exactly as I left it.
Thinking I was rooted I downloaded the Android WiFi Tether app, but the thing won't work! So I go back to the FAQ and read that I could check to see if I were rooted by downloading a terminal emulator and typing "SU" into it. I did, and got "Permission Denied". I'm thinking this means I'm not rooted...
Am I rooted? If not, what did I do wrong? If so, why won't my WiFi tether work?

I don't think that package is rooted, or at least it didn't root you when flashed (which happens sometimes).. use odin to flash CWM, boot straight into it and flash the superuser apk, when you boot up update the superuser app in the market and update the binary, after that you'll be rooted no problems

this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1160580 is a pretty good info thread on how to flash and what everything is though it's a little dated and most of the roms/CWM files are older, everything else like drivers and Odin versions are fine... CWM is short for ClockWorkMod recovery and along with Odin is what we use to flash roms/kernels/etc. to our phones, and yes in Odin it goes in the same PDA spot as a rom and flashes like normal... however since you don't have a custom kernel to make CWM 'stick' in your system its one time use after you flash it in Odin and you will have to Odin flash it again every time you want to use it, making it perfect if all you want to do is simply root the phone

After tinkering with it a few times, as well as a scare with a failed flash and temporarily bricked phone, I got it to work! I'm now rooted and have successfully run the tethering app with no errors.

blazing through on my 4G Droid Charge
I received a message yesterday to update. I did so and then realized some of the rooted features were not working. It said i had granted superuser permission, but i would get the message saying your phone is not rooted. I tried rooting again and when it got to the bottom line it said something like "failed file already exist" and then "Your Phone is Rooted!"
I guess at this point I would like to unroot and maybe wait for the 2.3.6 root.
I originally used the 1 click exploit method not the superoneclick.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Same. Kinda worried, not sure if a lot of rooted stuff is working. Can't really tell. Kind of regret updating.
EDIT:
SetCPU app tells me that it is having trouble accessing 'permissions'. I can't change the CPU or do anything in that app.
Superuser app seems to say that it is 'allowed' though.
Yes. I regret the update now as well. I was'nt thinking when I did it. Superuser will show they are allowed, but they don"t really seem to be fully functional. If you delete a rooted app and reinstall it will not be shown in Superuser. I just want to unroot and wait fo a better option.
I'm not going to 'do anything' about this right now because I feel like a lot of these updates are helpful (like no more carrierIQ according to some post in the atrix 2 forum for this site, and less end call lag). Going to wait and see if someone finds a root exploit for this. Just kinda bummed about not being able to use SetCPU now.
I'm good with the update. At this point I would like to remove the root that isn't really a root anymore. I do miss titanium backup.
Ok, need some major advice re: this OTA update..
I've got the Atrix 2, obviously...and when i got it, i did the one click root, then immediately installed titanium backup and did a full backup to my microsd card. Then i started yanking out all the bloatware. Thats about all i did. No weird mods, etc...
Now im getting this notice that there is a OTA update, i download it, but it has an error when it installs and keeps nagging me about the update.
What does everybody suggest I do at this point? If I restore my phone using the titanium backup, will that allow me to get the update? I'm guessing the error is caused because the OTA is trying to update apps that I removed.
And if I do that and it works... will my phone still be rooted? Or will I have to re-root?
I'm new to this and ANY help or ANY advice would be GREAT.

I also had Titanium backup. I did the upgrade and it did not recognize the root after the upgrade. Therefore Titanium back up was not accessible. I also have not found a way to root the atrix 2 now that it is upgraded to 2.3.6. When I try the "1click exploit" method to root it goes through the process and says its already rooted, but I have no super user capabilities. Let me know if you find a solution. Otherwise if the root for titanium back up is important to you I would hold off on the upgrade for now.

I'm thinking the only way to get past that is to use my titanium backup and put back all the stuff I took off right? Cause I made my backup IMMEDIATELY after I rooted my phone.

Compatibility
This guide has been specifically written for the Motorola Atrix 2. Do not try to attempt it any other device as it may cause issues with your device. Check your device model number in: Settings » About Phone
How To Apply 2.3.6 OTA Update on the Atrix 4G, with Root retained
Download and Install OTA Rootkeeper on your Atrix 2
Launch OTA Rootkeeper, and Select ‘Create SU backup‘
Once SU backup is completed, Select Temp Unroot .
Now exit OTA Rootkeeper
Uninstall the Superuser app. In case you have Superuser Elite installed, uninstall that too.
Now uninstall OTA Rootkeeper. The backup you created through OTA rootkeeper in Step 2 above will still be retained, so don’t worry.
Now go ahead and download the 2.3.6 OTA update to the phone and apply it
Once the update is complete, reboot the phone. Once it has rebooted, power-cycle the phone ( Switch it off and power it back on after a minute)
Once the phone has booted back up, install OTA Rootkeeper and Superuser again
Launch OTA Rootkeeper, and Select Restore Root. This should bring up a superuser permission prompt, Accept it.
Now reboot the phone.
That’s it!! You have updated to the latest 2.3.6 OTA, and are also rooted.

To answer the first part. I downloaded the update when I recived the message. I wasnt thinking about it giving problems with the root. I had no issues at all with the download. just the root not working afterwards.
The second part sounds like it might work for you, but it must be done before you update. It is too late for me to use this method. If i could unroot it, which I haven't found a way yet. I would try the method to save the root.
At least you thought about the upgrade and the root before thinking "oh boy an update lets do it", like I did. Now I'm stuck with a phone that thinks its rooted, but wonn't grant superuser permissions and won't take another root.
OTA failed
I ran into the same thing, downloaded the OTA today and run the update, really without thinking about the implications ('nother stupid n00b here : )). Interestingly it failed immediately and I still have root, I don't have any idea why it failed except maybe Superuser blocked the OTA packages SU access, is that even possible?
Anyway,,,Has anyone tried the OTA Rootkeeper procedure? I would like to have the update, because of stability issues, but I want to keep root more than I want the update.

Did not work for me I back up to SD Card and used Titanium Back up and after the update cant get anything to work. Guess I have to wait until one of the experts comes up with anoter 1-Click_Exploit or Exploit (Manual). I'm new at all this and know just enough to be dangerous:-(
I am a new member on xda, however i have read posts and forums to resolve issues with my gt-p1000n. I now own a Motorola Razr (XT910), on 2.3.5 rooted. I want to play the new 9 innings from Com2us and Inotia4. As you may all know this is not possible if your device is rooted. I have played them both on my wifes SGS2 with shell root, and sure enough...they run perfectly fine. My phone is full in root, is there any way around this? Someone please help!!!!

did you use a one click root? if so most of them can unroot, so you could just unroot for a bit to get your gaming on.

I actually did...i used super one click. Yeah it's fast once you've attained the Motorola drivers for your device. I was looking for a work around with much less hassle. In my opinion the Motorola Razr beats Samsungs Galaxy I & II in performance and video/audio quality (haven't compared against an SIII yet). Only if the Motorola Razr is rooted though. Motorola has so much more bloatware compared to Samsung, so battery life is just terrible on such an amazing device. I do appreciate the reply though, thanks! Way to make a new member feel welcomed. Looking for a full on work around, that won't require me to temoprarily unroot then reroot. Thanks though @ loosedupon!
Yup, there are quite a few actually. Don't let that stop you from rooting though, i don't know how to flash and **** like that. Personally, I'd prefer not to though. Due to all the different outcomes if you load the incorrect files. However, rooting my device has made me truly enjoy my devices (gt-p1000n & razr xt910). My Galaxy Tablet is one of the first batches out in the Latin American versions (the original 7in. with a ****ty 400 ram availability). I played Blood Brothers and Quest and Sorcery on it with little to no lags or hangs opposed to my razr. @wannahit
Try Voodoo OTA rootkeeper. It will protect root, but also allow you to temporarily unroot with the " push of a button" I use it for google movies. Works good.
Thanks chrism.brunner! I will try that. I actually tried Hide My Root, it worked. For that to work, you must set a password first. That password is needed to hide/uninstall the su apk, and su binary. I was super baked when i set mine! About 45 minutes later tried to restore my binary files. I forgot the ****ing password, [email protected]! What upset me was, there was no recovery process to have my password reset. I had to re-root my device. I will give OTA a try though. Thanks!
Just so you know, OTA Rootkeeper's latest version will not save an SU binary in /system/xbin.
So when you re-root your device, you will have to go into /system/bin and scroll down and copy SU. Then go into /system/xbin and paste it in there and set your permissions. Not having it in xbin sometimes causes some Root applications to not run.
I've use OTA on my Transformer for 6 updates now and restored each and every time. Granted that is for a Asus product. If worse come to worse, you could always just SBF back to stock using RSDlite (I'm an ex-Motorola user btw).

I actually just finished using OTA Rootkeeper. It restored my su back up fine. I tested it on 9 innings 2013, and i still ended up with the same results. I also tried the temp. unroot and ota survival options on superuser. Same as OTA Rootkeeper, i do intend on keeping the app for further uses. Hopefully i won't get the same result as 9 innings!
I am a better hands on learner than a read and study. I am also not ashamed of my ignorance. With that being said, what the f*ck is a SBF and RSDlite?
No need to be ashamed. Every one of us was new at one time.
An sbf file, is the Motorola file for reflashing the stock operating system to the phone. It returns the phone to the way it was brand new.
Rsd lite is the program used to flash the sbf file. It is installed to your computer, and and " installs" the software on your phone. It can be dangerous if you flash previous versions of android. Many have bricked their devices with this.
Once again, thanks! I was completely lost with Woodrube's reply. I am also fully aware of the possibilities of bricking while flashing. So flashing is something I refuse as a resolve. So all of that are things I won't attempt, to simply avoid that from occurring.
How about if I uninstalled root and replaced it with shell root. My wife has a GT-i9100 on 4.0.3, with shell root...I know the pro and con of shell root vs root. Surprisingly, she hasn't lost her root access! However, with shell root your device only has temporary root access. Will I still be able to grant su access, for apps such as lucky patcher, TB, and the many other apps used to tweak performance and settings?
Man this is burning out my mind!!!! Maybe, I'll just give it a try...won't know until I try right? On SuperOneClick, which exploit should I use though? Should I use motofail, zergrush, or gingerbreak? I am currently running 2.3.5 (on a Razr XT910, of course) which is a gingerbread, if I am correct. I used zergRush on my GT-P1000N running 2.3.4 which I'm assuming is a gingerbread too.
Also, what are ideal min. - max. values for over/underclocking my device? Where I won't sacrifice too much performance for battery life.
I used the automatic script for unlocking the bootloader, rooting, and installing cwm. I used unlock_ version 4.2.
As to overclocking, I don't anymore. The phone I am using now is a new one from Motorola to replace the one with constant reboots. I am told it was a hardware issue, but I'm not sure of it wasn't related to constant changing kernels and overclocking. I am actually satisfied with the atrix on the stock kernel and clock speed.
I haven't used the root that you are talking about, but it might be an option. Try it on your wifes phone, if you can.

As to sbf files, no need to worry about it. I have found it to be totally safe. If you Need to get back to stock, it works. I have done it many times. Just flash the same or newer version.

What app were you using to change the boot logo?
Rom Manager Pro....and no you can't work around by denying root access. The games are granted permission to see all apps running in background. I have tried denying such permissions with Permission Denied, whatever the name is. All it did was automatically close the game. Didn't even launch at all, immediately closed.

Hi Guys,
I'm new to android, this is my first realy android device and I thought I was doing pretty good on my own till the crap hit the fan and now I'm just stuck and have no idea what to do next, any help would be appreciated.
So, I bought an infinity and got it rooted (using Debugfs) just fine, updated to JB and all was well till the .25 update came out which failed to work OTA, I had to side load the update which worked but it killed my root, I was told on the transformer forums that there was no way to root JB and I would have to downgrade to the .30 IC firmware.
I downgraded to .30, did a factory reset just to be on the safe side and ran Debugfs again to root, it did its thing and said my root was successful, although it didnt ask me if gid and uid were 0 but then I dont think it did the first time I did it either. I then installed root checker to verify the root, ran it and hit the check root button it then says:
Please wait for root check to complete the system appears to be running very slow" (not sure what that's about)
After a while it says that I do not have proper root access.
I tried doing a reset again and running the root again to no avail.
Also the system does not appear to be seeing the OTA updates, it hasnt notified me of a new update yet so thats just a little icing on the cake.
If anyone could help me figure this out I would greatly appreciate it.
Can you verify you're on ICS in settings/about tablet?

Ok so this is really weird, I opened up the superuser app to see if it worked, it didnt list anything in the app when I opened, I then closed it and went to run root checker again so I could tell you everything it said and this time it asked me fo allow super user acccess (which it didn't do before) and it worked, says I have root...what do you make of that?
I installed GMD gesture control to see if it works and it does, also installed OTA root keepr to see if it would protect the root and it did.
But I still am not getting the OTA updates, even when I check for them manually in the settings it says there are no updates and without OTA I cant preserve my root, right?

Well, if OTA is not working, it's going to be a pain in the As***, you need to manually upgrade using dlpkgfile incremental upgrade method can be found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1803090 Good luck! It recommended that you do .16, then 18, then .20, then .23, then .25 ...(once you hit .18, you can skip directly to .25, but some reported didn't work, but you could give it a try).

Also a couple stupid questions, I looked through that tutorial and there are a couple things it didnt explain (unless I missed it) but where do I get dlpkgfile files? or do I have to do something with the firwmare zip?

OK, it's a mystery, some can take OTA , some just won't do it, no matter what you do to it. So back to the update, you need to download the dlpkgfile from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1926147
Well that second tutorial was much more helpful but as is my luck it didnt work, I did everything as specified but when it went to update all I got was the green android dude on his back with a red triangle and a excalamtion mark, just my luck.

So you have the dlpkgfile (no extention, version .16, IF IT NAMED DIFFERNTLY, MAKE SURE RENAME BACK TO dlpkgfile) copied to /cache/ (Make sure this directory is empty before copy)
and command file (command with no extention, IF IT'S ZIP YOU MUST UNZIP FIRST) copied to /cache/recovery/ (There should be only 2 files in this directory, "last_install" and "last_log"
Turn off your device, then boot into recovery and wait a bit it should starts updating.
Your final should look like this before you shutdown your device: (no extention, file names have to be exact as below)
/cache/dlpkgfile
/cache/recovery/command
Yep did all that, I tried downloading the dlpkgfile from a different mirror and that seems to have done the trick, I'll keep trucking here and see if I can burn through a few of these updates, gonna be a long night lol.

Every specific dlkpgfile is the update from exactly one version to exactly another version. IF you have a dlkpkgfile that updates from .18 to .25, you can do that, but you need the correct dlpkgfile for that. Such files do exist, but I haven't seen them available here on xda. Someone even mentioned he has a dlpkgfile that updates directly from 9.4.5.30 to 10.4.4.25 - if you use that, you can (and must) do everything in one step.
Well I'm happy to say that after heaps of fun installing all the incremental updates everything works and I'm still rooted so we can declar victory and distribute experience points accordingly.
