How to use logcat - G Tablet General

Hi,
There's an app that I really want to use but it keeps crashing, and I'd to send me a bug report with all the error messages. I was told that logcat does just that, and I'd be most appreciative if anyone could give me some help on how to use it. Specifically,
1) As I recall adb does not quite work with our g-tab (e.g. remount); how then should I run logcat?
2) I'm running adb on a terminal in an XP box. Is there a way to increase the number of "lines" the terminal would store, and how do I "save" these output?
3) My plan is to boot up the g-tab, start adb, then run the app and save all the error messages. Is that the correct procedure?
THANKS!

There's an easier way. Get "Log Collector" from the market, then right after the app crashes, run Log Collector and it will easily let you email the log to the developer.

After adding apps and rebooting phone, you dont see app name

Hey can anyone tell my why when i install a program, after i reboot my phone, it doesnt display the app name in the all programs list. After rooting I installed Terminal Emulator, Meebo, AdFree and PicMe.
After I reboot, I no longer see the app name but the package name.
Terminal Emulator is displaying com.android.term
Picme is displaying com.bw.picme
Meebo is displaying com.meebo
but adfree is displaying AdFree.. it's perfectly fine
any ideas? it's just a little frustrating

I wrote an app to control my phone through google talk

Hey guys!
I developed TalkMyPhone, an open-source app that enables you to control your phone from google talk. It's like android-notifier on steroids, since it brings almost the same features and you don't need wifi/bluetooth enabled.
I can't post links since I'm new here. Google for talkmyphone or look for it on the market.
Developers: I'm open to contributions
Users: please use the issue tracker for suggesting features
I don't have many non-french users since the info did not spread very well outside of french blogs, so I'm posting it here. I hope someone will find it useful and write something about it.

Do you need multiple GTalk accounts in order to talk to it, or can you "talk to yourself" ?
Niice Idea
sweeeet thx
Doesn´t work on my SGS. After trying to to login the app closed. And now i can´t open it again. Even every other app wont start.
Only a restart helped. Uninstalled.
But the idea is interessting. maybe i´ll give a try again later.

The 2 solutions work. Talking to yourself is possible in gmail, but you cannot initiate the conversation, so in this case, best is to use a third party client like pidgin. Otherwise you can set up a second account. Any standard jabber account is possible.
Accounts delivered at jabber.org are *very* easy to get. You don't need to give your email address, you don't need to sign an agreement. You just have to fill a captcha to prove you're human.

Weird. Some unlucky people experiment bugs like this one. I don't know where this comes from, and I try to improve the code. It works 100% of the time for me, so all I can do is look at 'adb logcat' traces users leave on the bugtracker. If you wish to do so, it might improve your chances to see this fixed

i have to find the other file, because i noticed some other grammatical things. no worries tho
and, 'additional settings', in the xml has too many 'n's, lol

Pretty Neat
I was able to go on Google Talk on my PC and send messages to my phone. The copy:text feature I can definitely see myself using so that I don't have to type long URLs in the browser. The other functions seem like they would be nice if you lost your phone or if it was stolen. Overall a pretty neat app! Thanks!

Hmm, I did all this. Let me see where the issue is:
My phone's Google account is set to [email protected].
I put in [email protected] and my password into TalkMyPhone.
I start up TalkMyPhone and it logs in -- successfully.
I go to my PC and log into gmail on [email protected].
I message from my PC ([email protected]) to my phone ([email protected]).
I get the message but nothing happens with TalkMyPhone.
Can you tell me where the issue is?
i entered in all of my information too and nothing seems to work, the app says loging in .. then that its successful. but then nothing can be done from there.
i cant even log in
i always get the message: "login failed" and then "stopping service"
i tried setting it on "use the phones account settings"
then i turned that off, and manually put in my gmail-settings - still didnt work
Same issues over here... Got it all connected, reciving messages from the phone works fine, too (welcome, battery, incomming callings) but sending commands doesn't work for me.
Got a HTC Magic/Sapphire with CM6 (2.2) running on it.
I had the same problem. I changed the GTalk Port to 5222 and entered my ****@googlemail.com instead of ****@gmail.com
Works perfect on my HD2 (Android ) Thank you!
When I log in on phone i get this gTalk message on my pc from my own account:
Welcome to TalkMyPhone. Send "?" for getting help
Battery level 78%
Works just perfect...

do i need to have the real gtalk installed on my computer?
doesnt applications like trillian for windows work?
I tried Pidgin and it works but I use the GMail-Chat because it's my info hub
Anyways, great work chm.duquesne, this is a really great application.
Now there just needs to be a way in GTalk to turn off the chat notification in Android for a single contact
// Edit
The "where" feature is really awesome, mate.
Nothing serious but the reply feature does not work for me. When I received a SMS and I type "reply:This is my reply" it answers "No match for "+491234567890" (the number being the correct number, of course).

[APP] a! Commands (Anti-Theft commands for avast!)

Don't learn all Anti-Theft avast! Free mobile Security commands by heart!
Use a! Commands to generate Anti-Theft SMS Commands for you. The interface allows you to browse through all commands easily and fast.

Nice handy app. Thanks for taking the time to put this together. I'd also advise users of avast to make a paper copy of at least a few important commands other than LOST or FOUND and keep them in their wallet or purse, or somewhere handy. I made myself a complete list and carry on me at all times. You never know when you're going to need them and asking a friend to install your app might not be feasible at the moment you need those commands.
Sent from my ADR6350
That is the main reason, why I put this app together. I don't want to carry avast commands on a piece of paper in my wallet.
there's only one problem with your app, it's only for android. if i lost my phone, my friend can't use this app because he has an iphone. some of my friends don't even have a smart phone yet because these devices scare them. for me, a paper copy in the pocket is infinitely more handy. not trying to troll, just saying a! commands has limited usage, especially after the phone is already lost and your android friends aren't available. paper can activate avast from any mobile phone and even google voice.

Can you add a way to choose the number to send the command to, from the phonebook ? Most of my friends have my number, and I tend to forget it

EnableFlash for Windows 8 (RT w/JailBreak)

This is a utility which allows you to whitelist flash (Enable Adobe Flash) on any website. on Metro IE
Mainly, this is intended for RT tablets, as they do not have any other way of displaying flash content.
Metro apps are installed via "Developer License"
This means that they will expire, and need to be reactivated/reinstalled. If the share
feature disappears, just rerun the installation.
Feature List:
Automates the white-listing of Flash websites using the "Share" function
Clears History, to save you the trouble of doing it manually.
This utility installs on any Windows 8 machine, Natively on x86, and on RT if jailbroken.
You need to simply share the page which has flash content (not whitelisted), and click the "Enable Flash" Icon.
The utility will download any details about the page that it can, and it will give you an option to select which ones you
want to whitelist. Once you've selected your targets,
Click the "Do it" button, and you will be given an option to clear your history.
When that's done, go back to the page and refresh. That's it! Enjoy!
NOTE: Internet Explorer automatically resets the compatibility list, which means that sites you add will stop working after a while.
Follow these steps to prevent that.
1) Go to Desktop IE
2) Press the "alt" key once. the menu bar will show up.
3) Navigate to Tools > Compatibility View Settings.
4) Deselect "Download updated compatibility lists from Microsoft"
5) Click "Close".
To Install:
Latest Version
http://barsuleo.com/enable-flash-nonet-1.0.3.zip
ADDED: Avoiding duplicate whitelisting.
ADDED Whitelist sanitization (locate/remove duplicate entries)
The new version clears ONLY your browsing history, leaving your cookies, and other desirable data in place.
Should be pretty helpful.
http://barsuleo.com/enable-flash-nonet-1.0.2.zip
http://barsuleo.com/enable-flash-nonet-1.0.0.zip
Extract, then run "Install.exe"
Make sure you select Yes[y], or Run[r] through all the prompts.
Please be aware that if you want to run this on an RT Tablet, e.g. Surface, you need this jailbreak.
Enjoy!
Changes:
Changed to File-based system vs. Networking
Now it works!

I still keep running into some errors though:

also another button to enable flash, but without clearing browser history would be nice (e.g. "Not this time")

I do not currently have an account with non-ansi characters, but i will run through that asap. It may be that the issue was with communication, which i've fixed. Anyways, if you run into more issues, shoot it on the post.

I will add some more debugging info on the next version. I've tested it on every machine that I have and it seems to work. :/
You can also try to launch the server service manually from /bin/srv.exe.
Also, when you first launch it, it asks for network access permissions. make sure you allow it, otherwise it won't work.
weird
even after update to 1.0.3 it seems to search for whitelist-srv.exe, and doesn't seem to find the server, even though i renamed the process to whitelist-srv
i don't really get that
A few things:
Redownload 1.0.3. rerun the install.
if your error actually says "whitelist-srv.exe", the app didn't reinstall. if it says "srv.exe",
kill "FlashUpdate Server" from taskmanager. then run "RunFlashServer.exe" from the download zip file.

Random email notification since A13

I'm a Typeapp user for my mailaccounts. Since the latest upgrade to Android 13 it does not always show a notification. Randomly.
Typeapp suggested to alter the Battery Manager to allow the app running in the background. Did not help.
Then I tried a few other email apps for a week or so, but the same issue occured: not always a notification in time.
My idea is that this issue does not belong to the mailapp, but possibly Android 13 does something in the background that prevents a notification. Sometimes (and that's the irritating part!).
Somebody recognizes this?

This sounds somewhat familiar to me already since Android 11 where several people had the same issue regarding SMS/text messages arriving in time in Android (according to the logcat) but the notification message was often triggered few minutes or much later.
For a workaround for the SMS/text messages notification delay problem, effective at least for the default SMS/text/messaging app com.android.messaging, see the following GitLab issue (for klte) which even lead to one of the LineageOS developers reporting the bug to Google with the corresponding issue still being unresolved/open.
[Update 23.10.2022 for the sake of completeness]:
Other users reported the same problem for different phones No SMS while screen off and Notifications for incoming messages are delayed after device has been sleeping for a long time
It seems to me that this is a typical SMS-issue. I think my issue is a more general thing and I will try a hard reset and start with a clean Android 13 setup.
I'll give feedback afterwards... (when time and availability let me fix it)
Mauvan said:

The reception of the SMS was/is not the problem in this case since it appears immediately after sending in the log but the notification triggers with a large delay/late.
Therefore I can imagine, that this is a general notification bug which also appears in other apps.
Simply trying out the command takes a few seconds and observing the behavior also only takes very little time.
Personally I would invest this little time before doing a hard rest ... but perhaps I am the only one who enjoys doing other things in his spare time much more rather than hard resetting his phone and going through the following tedious installation and setup of all apps from scratch.
I know, it is no fun doing those things like install and setup your phone
But what if I really cannot find the com.android.messaging app amongst all system apps? Or does it have a different name since A13??

I wrote my sentence in a "teasing" way but with the winking smiley because you seemed very determined reinstalling everything from scratch without trying the suggested workaround.
And since different people have different interests, there was still a small chance that you prefer having a clean Android installation anyway from time to time and simply want to make sure that the problem arose from a "dirty" upgrade from A12 to A13.
Anyway, I am now confused by your following statement:

The way I understood you is, that your issue did (at the moment) only affect email apps.
1.
Did you also observe the notification delay with the stock SMS/text messaging app?
2.
If not, what is the reason why you now want to identify the stock SMS/text messaging app?

This I don't know.
3.
If 1. == yes, is the app name displayed in the app info options menu (the place of the other settings like permissions, storage & cache, etc.) when you scroll all the way to the bottom (as it is the case in A12)?
4.
If 3. == no, then you can possibly identify it using the output of
Code:
adb shell pm list packages
or paste the result here so we can have a guess.

Well, if it only occurs in the mail apps, then let's stick with those.
So, instead of whitelisting the SMS/text app, I suggest to try the battery optimization whitelisting procedure with those.
As a first step, please execute the current content of the battery optimization whitelist by calling
Code:
adb shell dumpsys deviceidle whitelist
and paste the result (list of apps) in this thread.
This should help us in better understanding whether the whitelisting step via ADB (which was either already done by you via the Android UI, or if not, which we'll do once we have the result from the above call) actually changes the whitelist content.

Since we are now ignoring the SMS/text ab, you can forget about the adb shell pm list packages command but need to execute the other (ADB) command mentioned above.
There are many tutorials on how to use ADB - I am only (randomly) posting the official instructions:
https://developer.android.com/studio/command-line/adb
So you mainly need 2 things:
PC: ADB executable - downloadable from https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools
Android: Settings > System > Developer Options > USB debugging
There's not even an option in Settings > System for USB debugging and Developer Options in my Pixel.
In another life I was a programmer but this goes beyond my capabilities (and patience to figure it out).
I give up.
