Well known problem. You have to set the global notification to the one you want your email notification to be. Then you can choose notification sounds for other applications as usual.
You could always grab the email.apk from an earlier Cognition build and replace it.

Earlier this week I installed the latest version of Cognition. This was my first time to root the phone and try a new OS. So far it works great, with one small exception. I cannot get the notification sounds to work correctly.
In the main settings menu I can change sounds, but no matter what I change it to, there is no effect. It still plays the same sound when I get an email.
I use k-9 mail, which has no option (that I can find) for notification sound. I did change the sound in the default email just to see if that would work, but it did not.
I changed the sound in the menu for messaging, and that worked for text messages.
Any thoughts/ideas/suggestions?
K-9 sets the notification sound on a per account basis. When viewing an account's folder list or while viewing a folder's contents tap Menu->More->Settings->Account settings->Notifications.
There is a setting under the global settings to create a 'quiet time' when notifications don't sound.
Ok - Now I feel like a total idiot
Thanks so much. I do appreciate it.

You're not alone. I just found this thread through searching for a solution to the exact same "issue".
Notification sounds set for email, and IM+. but text messages stays default sound no matter how many times its changed. Only have this issue with Cognition 4.1.1. Any ideas how to fix?

Bad flash? I don't have that problem with 4.1.1
Try posting in the Cog sticky in the Q&A subforum.
The name of the thread says it all, i'm not getting any more notification for the sms i get.
No sound, no icon in the notification bar, nothing...
I'm just able to see that i have a new message because i set Handcent to display the number of unread sms on the Launcher Pro dock.
Yes, i have checked all the settings, yes, i have tried other application, yes i have tried to change my rom (tried the stock 2.3.4 , reseted it, didn't work, so i installed the CM 7.1 RC...).
It's kind of annoying, i have to wake up the phone now to check the new sms, it's killing the fun!
Anyone has had the same problem? Anyone knows what could have caused it? I didn't change anything at all, it started with no reason.
FYI i'm french, living in france, Nexus S i9023, and getting pissed off because of that thing XD
Thanks for you help guys!
Come on mates, don't tell me i'm the only one having this issue???
Even on the french forums nobody's ever had it, i can't have that much bad luck! XD
ok, one more try.
My provider kept the phone for one month trying to fix the problem, which they did by "updating the software"... bulls**t as it was already the latest version of anything available on my phone. The problem is still here, i can't get any notification for my SMS!!
The thing is, while they had my phone repaired, i used my old HTC Hero... And i got the same trouble! It seems the problem is my google account! BUT i tried with a new adress i created just to check it out... And i had the same problem...
To be honest, i'm fed up having to wake up the phone to check the sms!
I can't find a reason why my notifications are off now!
I tried a non-android phone (samsung player one) and i got all the notifications!
It's driving me crazy, does anyone have a clue???
i had the same issue ever since I bought my Nexus S but the setting for vibrating when you receive a text message is in the Messaging app after you press the menu key and go into settings
Messaging App --> Menu Key --> Settings --> Notification Settings
Hope this helps!!
Helped on JB4.1.2 by turning SMS notification off (yes, it was on by default, but no Notification) and then on again after exiting the sms app.
I had the same problem...
fullwiped, reflashed gapps, worked again.
If you're not willing to wipe, I remember that Go SMS was the only sms.apk able to notify me of incomming text at the time. You may give it a try

with android 4.1.2 this problem is solved
Since 1.9.16 custom contact ringtones does not work anymore.
If a contact with a custom ringtone calls me the phone ring the default ringtone instead of the custom one.
Setting another contact ring tone does not make any difference.
Also tried Rings Extended with no luck.
I went back to 1.9.9 and the problem was not there.
Unfortunately i can not use 1.9.9 cause of the bluetooth problem it has.
Does anybody has similar problem with 1.9.16 ?
After flashing 2-3 other roms and no problem occurred (always restoring everything with titanium) i found the cause of the problem.
I had not realized that i had the problem when the screen was off, cause i have a 15 off timer and its always off and always i restore my settings from Titanium.
The problem was caused by screen-off profile of setcpu!
i tried to change frequencies or governors but no luck.
removing the screen-off profile completely everything runs as expected...
I cannot figure out why a profile 100-400MHz screen-off can cause this problem since other roms worked ok.
well, now with 1.9.23 there is no way i can make contact ringtones to work,
i made a full wipe and setup form scratch but contact ringtones does not work.
i cannot understand what i am doing wrong.
i put my ringtones at /sdcard/MIUI/ringtone.
select a global ringtone from there which works ok and then i select some contact ringtones from there but they get ignored!
whatever i try always the global ringtone rings ! ignoring the contact settings!
This happens only to brainmasters MIUI, formels and MIUI original works great!
also work at 1.9.9 brainmasters MIUI.
It didn't cross your mind to post this question in the specific rom thread??????????????????

Unfortunately I cannot help you with your problem, but I do have a question for you. How are you setting your screen to 15 seconds? I am using brainmasters miui and can not set any lower than 30 seconds. I want to set 15 but cannot figure any way to do that.
sadly after too many efforts brainmaster miui 1.9.23 refuses to play contact ringtones even at stock install without any other program installed. (i didn;t install setcpu also).
Other miuis don't have this problem nor brainmasters 1.9.9.
flashed 1.10.7 to a brand new i9023.
its first rom after rooting.
same problem.
Is anyone else having issues with email particularly exchange?, to where when email comes in, it doesnt vibrate anymore. Started after 4.4.3, using the skyfall rom but experienced the same issue on another rom and thought it was just the rom. Initially when setting exchange up and running it for a while it work normal and vibrate when an email came in but not anymore.

Ok, Are you getting vibrate notifications from everything else? (Text, Facebook ect...) I enabled it on mine and tested with the phone ringtone both on vibrate and loudest setting but the email notification vibrated on both.
I did how ever find out that my notifications volume is super low even on the highest volume setting!! WTF?! So thank you for that lol
Edit: Not sure what happened with my volume but restarted the phone and it's back to normal.

That's strange, unfortunately that's about as far as my trouble shooting skills go lol hopefully someone with more knowledge can jump in and help you out.
Since the Oreo update I am not able to set a notification tone for messages... I have FDR'd 3 times now... It wasn't working right away... I have done resets with restoring data and NOT restoring any data..... Whether I change it in the messaging app or in the settings drawer it shows it changes but plays the default tone still.... Or sometimes plays nothing.... Any thoughts? I have cleared cache.... To be honest it seems to be doing kind of what it wants as far as tones for messaging.... I am trying to use factory installed tones and also downloaded MP3 tones... It plays the tone just fine as I am trying to select it but doesn't play when a message comes in............
I thought I had the same problem but finally figured it out.
Under the settings/notifications menu in the messaging app, change the tone in the New messages selection.
Edit: for the record, I hate the way notifications work in this new Oreo update. For example, if I have multiple messages that I haven't read, if I exit the app without having read some, the notification goes away entirely.
Plus, the badge notification isn't working on some apps unless I have it set for push notifications, which I don't want.
Oh well, nothing I can do about it now... at least that I know of.

You are a life saver!!! I wonder why we can't change it in the Messages app anymore... Thats kind of a big flaw.... Thanks!!!!
Did you read my edit above? Any ideas?
In particular, two apps, Facebook and Words with Friends 2, I could set them (in Nougat) to not allow push notification but a badge would show up on the icon letting me know I had a new item in the app without it going to the top notification bar. I can't get it to do the same now.

In the notifications for those apps under General Notifications maybe try changing the Importance...??? I am not sure but will for sure look into it.....
My only other known issue at this point is even after 4 FDR's Game Launcher is disabled instantly....

I'll keep playing around with the notifications. Maybe I'll figure it out.
Honestly, I disabled game launcher. I don't even know what it's for. Maybe I'll play around with it to see. I'll let you know if I find anything.

I am not super worried.. It looks like it may be turned off by default until you enable it.... I am not that worried.... I am going to work on getting everything setup and play around and see if I can help you out.... I think I know what you are after.... You don't want to be alerted but still want the badge to show up...

I think the issue is the badges are directly tied to the notifications.... So when you clear the notification you clear the badge...

I think this is correct for the most part. Here's what I'm running into now, though. On several apps, including one for work that I need notifications for, the badges aren't even working at all, even with all apps set for all push notifications. For me, the badges are more important on some of my apps than the notifications on the bar at the top.
I hate this. Why would they change something like this? This all worked fine in Nougat.
I purchased Nova launcher prime a while back. Looks like it's time to go try that one again.
I'm having the same trouble. I have Push notifications turned on, but Facebook, Words with Friends, and the native email app won't show badge notifications.
Email shows an old number in the badge when, right after rebooting, it shows the notifications.
I'm not enjoying this update.
