New Captivates comes with 2.2 per samsung website - Captivate General

Check it out. Samsung lists Addroid 2.2 as the os for our phone.
http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SGH-I897ZKAATT

Thats Interesting.

On the same site under specs it shows 2.1. Yet on the first paragraph it says 2.2

So now you can chalk up false advertising with nonexistent support. Way to go Samsung!

That's pretty lame for sure...you would think someone would proof read their changes to their web site..but there I go again...applying logic to an illogical situation...

This change nearly coincides with the previously rumored date for AT&T's release of Froyo Captivates to the AT&T stores (Nov 21st). While I have not heard anything about what version is on the AT&T store Captivates, it does look like Samsung was/is expecting new Captivates to come with 2.2 starting today or yesterday...

Was told flat out by a Samsung business rep in person that Froyo is out first week of Dec for AT&T Captivate. Hope it comes early...but that was right from the horses mouth.

Who, Mr. Ed? *grabs popcorn*

I can't wait for the official release! This Mobile AP and lack of bloatware is driving me crazy!
Just kidding; I know there are some of you who don't want to root your phones and whatnot.

Odd, it actually says comes with 2.2 but when you look at the specs it says 2.1 OS, they are confused. Perhaps out of boredom I will flash back to stock and connect with mini kies to see if it is available.

Don't bother. I checked kies mini this morning and about an hour ago. Kies mini updated this morning. It just says "current version".

I wonder why we havent seen a new leaked ROM for the captivate is an offical 2.2 is in the works. Maybe AT&T is just gonna push Cog v2.3b6 to our phones

so this is what the website says now (i bolded the 2.2 reference)
Galaxy S with Android 2.1 OS

Froyo + GPS fix to come at end of September

According to an Samsung insider( of whom shall be annonymous), it seems like Samsung is scheduled to release their Froyo + GPS update to At&t at the end of September.
The question is, will At&T release this update on their OTA on the same month?
Manufacturer may have the solution fixed, but if the carrier doesnt release it to the public, what is the point no?
Here is the direct quote from this insider:
"Froyo plus GPS update will be available at the end of September. Now let's just pray that A&T releases it at the same time."

We all hope this will be the case.
Another question I have along those lines:
After FroYo, will my rooted phone still be rooted? If not, will the same rooting process still work?
While I definitely want the new OS, and especially to have GPS that doesn't take 5 minutes to find me, I'd be hesitant at the expense of all the work I put into the phone since I got it.

Hard to say, I'd expect to have to re-root though and also to have to use a modified update.zip to root, if not a new method all together.

It is likely you will have to root the device again.
Well Samsung said on their @samsungtweets account that the GPS fix was indeed coming at end of September. It didnt say anything about Froyo though.
"We're testing software to optimize GPS on US Galaxy S. Expected updates avail. in Sept. Details & download to follow."
I have little doubt that ATT is interested in taking care of Captivate. Given the spectacular growth in Android phone sales which overtook iPhone sales in Q2, AT&T must be very concerned and they should develop a new Android strategy.

Or you can wait for a custom ROM to be put out based on the release source. Only problem is that it may take a while.

If they were smart they would hop on android bandwagon. If all the reports are true and they are losing iphone exclusivity soon, and they are slow to support android they are going to be in a heap of trouble. Crackberries alone cant and wont save them
Sorry but I have not even seen an ad from AT&T for Captivate (Galaxy S). T-Mobile and Version yes but AT&T no.
And you would think with Verizon getting the iPhone soon they would realize it's about to be a battle again...

the thing i remember most is the hairy hand that guy had in the commercial lol
When the update from ATT arrives, can I decide to install it or not? Will it be forced to my phone?
Sure I want froyo, but if it is going to bring other limitations impossed by ATT, I'd pass and continue waiting.
lol when i saw the vibrant commercial i thought it was a captivate commercial untill the end when i started paying attention and noticed the differences
Is this a Captivate only thing? Because I would imagine T-mobile would want it first more than AT&T, since they don't have an iPhone and the Vibrant is basically their topmost phone right now.

I went and saw inception today, as I pulled my phone out to turn it off, the captivate commercial came on. It was great, got my iPhone using friends attention, and he couldn't wait to play with it.
at&t won't make a big push for ANYTHING while they retain iPhone exclusivity. Losing it will be the best thing that could happen to at&t customers. Finally get some support and love for other, equaly capable, (superior?) devices.

AT&T knows that the iPhone users are loyal to the phone and not the company. Their new Android strategy might as well be labeled their "exit strategy" from the iPhone to retain customers when they lose exclusivity.
If the rumors are true, Verizon will have it's single largest porting day in January and AT&T better prepare for it. Having devices like the Captivate sure help but they need to be on the phone with HTC daily demanding an EVOish device from them as well.
The Captivate won't get the number of customers the iPhone did but if they launched an ad campaign for a large and diverse Android portfolio headlined by the Captivate, a high end Moto, and HTC with the X10, Aria, and other devices below it they could surprisingly become the company for Android.
The iUsers will still get the iPhone, a small percentage will defect like I did, but they will have a steady stream of devices that vastly surpass the iPhone and will not be as affected as they could be.
For some reason the Streak slipped my mind. Add that to the high-end devices.
well thats samsungs release date but we all know att plus yeah i think i might just switch over to verizon i was doing some comparison and their plans are way cheaper for me

Who cares about 2.2 what about 2.3?

Am I the only one that worries more about 2.3 than 2.2? Samsung is literally the last top of the line phone to get 2.2....ridiculous....Will we see 2.3/3.0? I mean this phone should have came with 2.2 or at latest sept. I really expect samsung to support these phones through July 2011. Does anyone else? What's your expectations?
i don't think there will be official 2.3 android...
Samsung is notorious for not supporting updates. They'd rather sell new hardware than update what's out already for free. You're lucky you're getting a 2.2 update even if it is taking forever to release, 2.3 is going to be a stretch though.
Who cares for official release , no one here is running stock anyhow.
Word on the street is Nexus S is Galaxy S variant and is running Gingerbread, and since Nexus line is googles developer phone , means source of gingerbread will be available .
I expect easy and smooth port to Captivate by local XDA devs.

It's gonna be quite different. The camera and the soc will be dual core. Could have other hardware different as well.
I wonder how motorola and htc can afford to keep their top phones upgraded and samsung... Doesn't. I mean look at the droid from nov 2009....
I hate to go back to an iPhone next year, but this sucks. Thank god for xda! The devs here should have their own national holiday.
We don't really know anything about its spec just many rumors/fantasy's.
The only thing we do know its a bit curved , possibly a concave display , seen in one of the interview videos.

Motorola is supposed to be bringing a dual core phone to AT&T in feb. That's if you like blur. I'm also not sold on dual core either... I mean hello battery drain and for what positives? The soc in our captivate has yet to be pushed by anything android market can throw at it.
The resale value on this phone is gonna be horrible. I sold my 3GS last month for 300. Think in oct 2011 I can sell this phone for 200? Sucks. If the software support was there, they would wipe the floor with apple.

No way. The only reason people are on this forum / using this phone is because this is the only competitive att android. I love android os, but Samsung is so terrible at public relations that nobody will want a phone that never updates and has a broken GPS. You would be lucky to get 200 in 6 months...

you samsung guys are soooo pessmist ,
I come form a motorola phone with a locked bootloader , 2.2 was announce for the end of Q4
just to show there is worst then samsung ...
on a side note this devce can run custom kernel , so as long as source is release for gingerbread who cares even if its only out for htc it will eventually be ported to SGS , as long as there is a need for it it will happen ...as simple as that ...

See that is exactly how Apple keeps winning the war. Software support. It's an easy Eco system to buy into because the hardware is almost always supported for years. Yes closed systems. But the resale value for notebooks, computers, and iPhones is awesome. My wife will easily be able to pay for her next iPhone by selling the iPhone 4, hell we made 100 profit on both our 3GS. I have bought 2 3GS, an iPad, and a MacBook air.
I really love android and I love the hardware samsung puts out. I just wish they could grasp the concept of full customer support. They just come across as shady salesmen that can't wait to push the next big thing.
If I can't sell my captivate for much $$, I certainly won't be buying the next samsung whatever.

The way I see it these companies should make one of the following choices:
1. Sell cellphones with untouched Android. Leave it like wp7 and ios and let google handle software upgrades etc.
2. Have your custom software but support upgrades until hardware is no longer up to par. Maybe make their software downloadable through the market so we just update as needed but can run stock android while waiting.
3. Get out of the cellphone business and just become a hardware manufacture for real cellphone companies that can provide support.
I personally think option 1 is the best.... And most profitable. I mean samsung is stretched pretty thin. They make tvs and washing machines while trying to make cell phones, manufacture chips, and be a software company. Do what you do best and stick with it.

What Samsung ruined.

Does any body think that if Samsung had been on time with updates such as 2.2 and gotten us up to speed at a decent time that we would still be considered an elite phone instead of one just lagging behind?
IMO, the captivate is still elite I love my captivate, even running 100% stock. My friends with iPhone4's even love my captivate.

It's called technology. It will happen to the newly released phones as well. If the phone you have still serves its purpose, then why worry about the next generation? Having something simply because it has higher numbers and is "new" or "revolutionary" is just being foolish and listening to a marketing department. Buy something new because what you have is not allowing you to do something.
I am talking about 2.3 and eventually 3.0 not the phones in general, just us never getting up graded to the next OS.
All things aside I do think its bull**** that they can't roll out 2.2. I mean look at the complexities and flexibilities of the android os, I'm pretty sure if they really wanted to they could roll it out to us. But no they're just a bunch of assholes and....nvm /rage

It makes sense because the Captivate was built for AT&T and Samsung and AT&T have a contract that stipulates that the carrier approves the updates and tests them prior to deployment.
If you don't want that situation, then you need to buy a carrier free phone - like the i9000 that was sold unlocked from Expansys and other sites.
If you buy an AT&T (or any other carrier branded phone) then you are stuck waiting for carrier approval. This is true with any brand of phone - Moto, HTC, etc. don't release updates until approved by the carrier.

Three Words: Windows. Phone. 7.
Wow, what a bunch of whining. If you arent savvy enough to install any one of the MANY 2.2 roms out there, why are you complaining that newer, more complicated phones will leave this one in the dust?
Anyways, I think official 2.2 rolls out soon, just got a text from ATT saying an update will be pushed to my phone. Also, this phone has the minimum specs for android 3.0, from what Ive read, so I dont see why you think we wont be seeing android 3.0. With the way we are modifying roms and kernels right now, even if we didnt get an official 3.0 update, Im sure we would be able to at least port it. These phones are monsters, this thing has better specs than my laptop I got 5 years ago that was about 8X the price.

What did the text say? Sounds like you got a JI7 update message, especially if you are already running a 2.2 variant.
All the other 2.2 updates from samsung have been done via Kies, so i doubt that will be pushed 2.2. As for current Roms, most are based on beta 2.2 builds, none are 100% perfect - not that Samsung will do much better

Not a chance.
Ditto.
Don't see why we would go to froyo with gingerbread around the corner.

Of course you don't know that.
And what has kept me rofling with the xda community is their lack of hope. Before the Nexus S was announced, many people speculated it being real. A lot of folks kept saying "No, CEO of Google said no Nexus Two." Which is true, it's not a Nexus Two. It's a Nexus S. They just kept quoting Eric Schmidt and saying "see he said there will be no new device" etc. And it eventually happened.
So I wouldn't be in complete doubt about this. I'm not in high hopes either. But it wouldn't surprise me if Samsung was working on 2.3 this entire time.
And everyone says "it's at&T that is holding it back." Where was it ever even confirmed that at&T received the software from samsung and was "adding" in their bloat? I don't recall EVER seeing that.
It wouldn't make sense to me from a business point of view for Samsung to skip Froyo and push out Gingerbread while releasing a new product for a new client "Nexus", unless they are trying to boost image and make up for the GPS fiasco by doing the unexpected? Do you think Google would have anything to say for when Gingerbread gets released by Samsung?
But aren't there reports of the Epic getting Froyo?
seriously?
expecting samsung to develop gingerbread for the phones already released is kinda like playing russian roulette with a glock and expecting to win...
Really?
Yeah, like twitter is a reputable source for anything...
I could pee.

That depends on which theatre you're in. If you're in the eastern zones and you want a large, you can't get a Dr. Pepper. We will be selling a super-large Dr. Pepper shortly though. And unlike our previous offerings, it will have all the stuff you wanted in the "large" such as ice...and Dr. Pepper.

At least this one is marked as a [Rumor] rather than a "Wouldn't it be great...."
It wouldn't make any sense for the Galaxy S phones jumping from 2.1 to 2.3.
It's obvious that Samsung has already invested time and money on 2.2. For Samsung to now scratch the 2.2 release and go straight to 2.3 would mean they toss all of that work in the bucket. Only a company with a terrible business practices would do something like that... wait, we may be jumping straight to 2.3 after all.

While the odds are slim, i would not completely discount it. There's the possibility that since they have already been working on the new Nexus S they have come further along with 2.3 than 2.2. if i was Samsung, i'd have put more developers and money to toward 2.3 and the NS. If they are similar enough, they could port it and you now.. gain some customer satisfaction and possible repeat business.
Nexus S is pretty much a Galaxy S, so a port might be quite easy.
Also 2.3 seems to be tailored towards power saving for AMOLED screens, with more dark elements, so again it might be easy.
Apple releasing OS updates for iOS for about 2 years has not seemed to hurt their sales much. Yes they are a different situation somewhat, but if Samsung wants to create a brand following with this S brand, they better show some customer loyalty before I show them any loyalty. Thats how Apple earned their following; they deliver at a high level to their customers.
Ugh, how is it that people think just because Gingerbread came out, that all phone companies should be able to release it immediately? I mean, geez, it took months for anyone to put out Froyo. Maybe I'm wrong.....
To my understanding (correct me), Samsung makes phone while Eclair is in the wild. Samsung (obviously) codes phone to work with Eclair. Google releases Froyo. Samsung says "I want that" and has a 2nd team begin coding Froyo. Samsung can't just drop the months of work to produce Eclair and start all over, it would delay the phone. Samsung releases phone. Samsung releases update. Google releases Gingerbread. Samsung COULD start coding Gingerbread. But not until they get their hands on it.
I hate hearing people say "why can't we just skip to 2.3", or whatever. Things take time. I always thought that companies had to wait for Google to release the OS before they could start working on it (or do they get it earlier??). With that being said, how could Gingerbread be right around the corner? Froyo was released in May, Samsung released their update in what....September or Oct (I don't remember and don't wanna look it up).....it took at least 4 months of development. So, if Samsung were to release a Gingerbread update for Galaxy S, it won't happen until what.... April? Then of course it'll take another 2-3 months to reach the Captivate. So now it's July 2011.....and I'll be buying another phone by then. I remember hearing people during the Froyo launch complain that Samsung should just "wait for Gingerbread, it's right around the corner." Yeah, if you consider 6+ months "around the corner."
I mean, I hope I am missing something......I would love to see Samsung keep support fairly current for this phone. But there reaches a time when its no longer feasible.
Sorry if you actually read that.......just annoyed....
::end worthless rant::
This is what I think would happen, if anything...i see sammy doing the same thing that moto did with the cliq and backflip, integrating parts of 2.3 into 2.2... moto included jit in 2.1 for those users (used to be me) and it kind of quieted the noise
However, it would start some major fires in europe, so it probably won't happen.
And we probably won't get an official gingerbread either.

[Official] Froyo coming "later in December"

According to this article: http://mobilesyrup.com/2010/12/10/s...2-2-might-be-released-later-in-december-2010/
We may see Froyo later in December. But if you are like me who have been waiting for the official release and not the leaked roms, and have been searching "when, when, when, when." It may just be here. But just like the past, Samsung has failed to deliver on the date when they said: October, November, December. Now it is late December.
I will be waiting.
Keep in mind this is for Canadian carriers.
also keep in mind samsung always says one day and it ends up being forever later!
Also keep in mind that the article used the word "MIGHT"... not "WILL".
well it's already officialy out for Bell (Vibrant)... so I'm guessing Rogers (Captivate) should make the move soon...

“If you are an owner of a Samsung Galaxy S Captivate (SGH-i896) or Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate 3G+ (SGH-T959), the upgrade software for these phones is currently being tested and we are working on a release for later in December 2010.”
Sounds like "will" to me. Only thing missing is when.
I would actually be impressed with Rogers if they got it done before AT&T did as AT&T has had the phone a few months longer. I'm on Rogers, with an AT&T phone, I'll take whichever release comes first.

my MIGHT vs WILL is for "later in December" as stated in the title of the article - Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate OS 2.2 might be released “later in December 2010″
Samsung always said "By the end of the year" for US Galaxy S phones. They never promised any month for US phones.

This statement contradicts itself.
I think if we get Froyo by Dec 31 at 11:59pm we will be very lucky. As to Gingerbread that might come in 2012 if at all. I really dont understand the foot dragging by the US carriers. Unless ATT is locking out more functions
I'm thinking how we can all aim our fireworks for New Years at Samsung's headquarter. Or AT&T as well.
We will just have to wait and see, If history holds true, (like they did with WM builds) the Offical update from ATT will be nothing more then the leaked rom we have been using for months with a few things removed or added. Like the lock out for tethering without a tethering plan and such.
AT&T is like,
"hey look, Google just sent us froyo, should we roll out the update to our payed customers?"
"No. We have to add our bloatware first, that is the most important thing"
"Well they've been waiting awhile now..."
"So? We'll have it done in a couple months"
"The captivate will be obsolete by then..."
"Oh ya...oh well, this isn't Burger King, you don't "have it your way"

I'll give odds that it won't be out til next year.

I just want to get some sort of leaked 2.2.1 build so we can get some epic levels of custom roms that are stable...

HAHAHAHA oh wait.... Dun worry it gon be K. Canada's Cappys have it.
This is extremely old (and reposted news)...lol.
On another note, AT&T doesn't add the bloatware. Samsung, based on the handset requirements they get from AT&T add the bloatware.

You are splitting hairs - AT&T is the driver behind the added bloatware. Samsung only does because AT&T requires it. If they had their way, they would have one ROM that worked on all carriers. They would still add Touchwiz to differentiate themselves from vanilla Android - and for average joe consumer this is a successful strategy. AT&T wouldn't add the bloatware (force Samsung to add it) if they didn't generate a decent amount of revenue on it.

Im not to excited anymore about froyo(Don't get me wrong i absolutely love the captivate). Samsung just needs to go ahead and roll out their new phone with Gingerbread. I am am waiting for that day... I just dont see anything else happening with the captivate besides froyo.
