Expansys is a website that sells unlocked phones. And the milestone should work on at&t for making calls, but data wont work unless its via wifi. So not a worthwhile investment.

Just curious since I don't know about the bands and everything phones work on, why would it work for calls but not data?

Actually, if you can get it unlocked 3G should work.

I think the saddest part about this though is that I would consider getting that phone when I have what is AT&T best android phone. Samsung and AT&T need to get their act together.

[Q] How to activate on Sprint?

I am switching from AT&T to Sprint and I just purchased the Unlocked Nexus 5 on Google Play. What exactly do I have to do in order to activate my phone on the Sprint Network? I am used to just popping my SIM card into the new phone and it works but I know Sprint is a CDMA network and does not use SIM cards.
1. How do I get the phone activated on Sprint
2. Will it run just as good on Sprint as it would on AT&T? It will still work with LTE right?

Sprint does not have a byod line as far as I know unless you are going prepaid. Nobody knows yet if any of the mvnos will activate the nexus 5. You could always get an Iphone or something on your new line and sell it to cover your nexus cost and then some.
For a new line it would be much easier just to buy from sprint for $49.
Coverage/LTE will depend on your area but yes it will work.

According to this page the Unlocked version will work on Sprint:
http://www.ibtimes.com/nexus-5-release-date-unlocked-model-will-run-sprint-network-1452872
I probably will get an iPhone or something just to sell it since I will be able to get a new phone on contract pricing but I still need to know how to actually activate my Nexus when I get it. I was thinking about getting the $50 Nexus through Sprint but I am afraid if I do that I it will not be the exact same model. I don't want any Sprint bloatware on my phone and I don't want to get updates later than the rest. I also want to make sure the phone I get is heavily supported by developers. There is just too many unknowns on the Sprint model that I am scared to get it.
So anyway, do I just call Sprint to activate my device?

There is no 'sprint' model they are the same device. So to activate you will need to get a sim card from sprint and then you can either chat, call, use the online activation or go to the store to get set up.

To get a SIM, either go into the Sprint store. Or go online to the chat (you'll need an existing Sprint acct for this).
To activate, just call the big S and give them the info that they ask for
There's a thread going about this already that has some good info:

Sorry but just to be clear, Sprint will sell an unlocked phone? Has that ever been done before? Do you have a source? Not to discredit you but it seems that I should just buy it from Sprint instead of Google Play if there is no real differences. I just want to be sure.

I don't have a source atm, but that's all I've heard around the forums. You need to start a 2 year contract to get the phone at their low price though ($50 I think?). They're selling an off-contract one for $400 too. Same device all around.

This is the first time they have ever done it. This also means that the phone will be updated directly by google, with no carrier approvals/delays- which is also unprecedented for CDMA.
I myself am very surprised more people are not talking about this.
I stopped at a Sprint store today and asked about activating a phone bought from Google directly and they said it couldn't be done? Is that the case? I have about 5 months remaining on my contract with Sprint before I go on to another carrier.

Tried chat last night, and then calling in today but getting the run around. Was told I had to go corporate repair store; called store and was told that they don't normally stock SIM cards and that they won't have a N5 compatible one for a while until there shipment of phones comes in. I have sero account but this is the first time it has been an issue getting service.

[Q] U.S. buyers: mobile hotspot/tethering?

Can anybody who has purchased a device in the U.S. (either the U.S. or international version, but purchased from Motorola U.S. or a U.S. distributor) either confirm or deny this? www.fonearena.com/blog/88246/does-the-moto-g-lack-the-wifi-hotspot-feature.html
If you have a device purchased from the U.S. and *can* tether/enable and use the hotspot without difficulty, what carrier(s) have you tried it with?
Thanks!

Mostly because I am cheap. Also, I don't take pictures, and all of my music comes from Pandora. So I usually only end up using 2Gb for a couple of ROM backups and a few apps. :good:

That's kind of what I was hoping/expecting. The tweet threw me off. I wondered if Motorola caved to carrier demands that any phones they sell in the U.S. should just have tethering disabled, period, if they aren't going to sell them through the carriers and give them hooks to enabling or disabling it depending on how the account is built on the carrier's side.

It is, as you say, crap. I don't know how things are in the rest of the world, but the mobile industry in the U.S. is a total disaster. Subsidized phones, SIM locks, and crappy preloaded software rule the day because the carriers are mortally afraid of losing control and becoming "dumb pipes", so they manufacture all this fake "value-add" out of thin air that is really nothing more than an illusion made from artificial restrictions.
Tethering is just another example of this. They want to control whether you can or cannot tether other devices to your phone and use its data connection, and since the carriers -- not the end-users! -- are by-and-large the phone manufacturers' direct customer, the carriers get their way and the handset manufacturers cater to their whims. So in the U.S., the "privilege" of being able to tether other devices to your phone is typically an additional service that the carriers usually charge extra for, or that is only included in some plans but not others.
I would argue that if you buy an unlocked phone, then none of the carriers that the phone can technically work on should have any say about how it functions. Thankfully, with the Moto G in the U.S. (at least the direct-to-customer GSM models), it does appear that this is the case. This is definitely *not* the case with all phones; if you are at all interested in reading about my experience with my unlocked iPhone, you can go here: http://www.anderson-net.com/~nathan/apple-broke-my-phone

Well, sure, if you don't care about 1) having a stock software experience, or 2) warranty coverage. The stock tethering built into the OS is nearly always better than third-party solutions. And in the U.S., the handset manufacturers (Motorola included) can get away with legally voiding your hardware warranty if you tamper with the software (and with the way Motorola does boot loader unlocks through their website, they have records of each and every phone that has been unlocked). Which is, of course, absurd. But there you go.

How the hell is this legal? So admittedly, I've spent exactly 12 hours in the US, so I'm far from used to how stuff works over there. But what you just described is illegal in any other country I know of. Hell, you'd try to pull this crap in the EU and they'd kick you off the market faster than you can say "huh?".
Jesus, we can even unlock bootloaders, root and do practically whatever we want with the software and they cant void anything.
Tethering not working for mw
I came here thinking people were gonna have the same problem as me, my little brother has a moto g and my girlfriend has a nexus 5, they both use the 30 monthly t mobile plan and tethering does not work at all, it takes them straight the the t mobile log in page, We all live in the US and in the 30 dollar plan, tethering is included for free, my little brothers old phone allowed tethering , and that phone was a t mobile phone, not unlocked, so any ideas on the issue.

If your getting it for Verizon then the CDMA version from the motorola website would be the best option for you. I don't know if that version has mobile hotspot or not but the US GSM does but it does not work for Verizon which is a CDMA company.

[Q] Motorola Droid Ultra XT1080M on ATT

If the hardware is the same as the rest of the major carriers, like the S7 versions are, then flashing the firmware of other carriers will work if that's what you're going for. No idea if this will work as of yet but by the end of the week I'm sure we'll all know the answer to that. But by the sounds of it, you will need to get your phone carrier unlocked before doing that.

Dependent on carrier unless you are able to flash the US unlocked version, then it comes directly from Samsung. But like stated above, we're not exactly sure if that's an option as of yet.

Does the unlocked version support Sprint?

If you get the unlocked version from HTC's website, does it support Sprint, or will they have different radios? I tweeted HTC and they said that the unlocked version will NOT support Sprint.... But if you look on there website at the radios then I don't see an issue, they are the same as the unlocked version.
Here is a link to the website for the radios.
http://www.htc.com/us/smartphones/htc-u11/buy/#!color=black
And the unlocked radios:
http://www.htc.com/us/go/htc-u11-unlocked/
I also asked if I were to get the Sprint version would that support all other carriers (ie. AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon), I did not get a response from HTC.
I will say this would be absolutely ridiculous if the Sprint version is dumb down and doesn't support the rest of the world. I honestly would think about switching if this were the case. I just want to be on a GSM carrier that I don't have to worry about "if my phone will work" on this network. Annoying.
BTW I say this because I travel a lot, so having 1 phone that works everywhere would be the best thing in the world.

Annoying.
BTW I say this because I travel a lot, so having 1 phone that works everywhere would be the best thing in the world.

out of the box, the Unlocked ROM would not support Sprint, but the hardware is the same between the unlocked & sprint, so technically you could flash the Sprint ROM on the unlocked model. The problem is the unlocked IMEI would not be whitelisted. As far as the Sprint model supporting the GSM carriers...yes it would, provided the sim was unlocked...or you could flash the unlocked ROM.

OMFG THANK YOU! This makes way more sense now. I have been all over the Internet looking for an answer. Well at least I know the actual hardware is the same.
I feel like having to deal with hoping that Sprint will support the unlocked devices IMEI wpuld be worse then buying the Sprint flavor.
So I have 2 easy options then.
1. Buy it from Sprint at full price and do not extend my contact. Then have them unlock it which they can't say no to if I have no obligation to them.
2. Buy it from HTC but in the Sprint version. But I have to figure out if it is unlocked. I think it is. It looks like it is on there website.
Man I hate how buying phones and carrier plans work in the US. I wish we would go to an overseas model, and almost every phone is unlocked. Then you just decided what service you want yourself. So easy to just walk in a store and get service with whatever phone you want.

Ah that is very handy, I might look into doing that. Thank You.
However, I do think I am going to purchase the phone at full price anyway as that is what I was planning on doing, but this is good to know. At least the hardware is the same and I wont be locked down by Sprint. I should just buy it direct from HTC I think.

Yeah, it is cheaper to buy from HTC at full price especially with the $50 off code.. Plus you could make interest free payments via PayPal credit if you wanted to

Ya I was thinking the same thing. But its weird on HTC's website if you select the Sprint version it doesn't have the color black. But if you go to sprint they do..... facepalm.
Also I spoke with Sprint yesterday to see if they would tell me if the unlocked one works, and they refused to even check. They wanted the MEID of the device, which I don't have, and I told them I don't have it until I buy the phone online and have it shipped to me. So this is annoying.
Also I just ran across this article on Android Central that the Verizon version dose not have CDMA radios. Now that makes me wonder about the Sprint version.

I swear this is a headache. Just go to Sprint and buy the dang thing, then either unlock it myself or have them do it. Just have to suck up the extra $50.

Ya I guess you are right on that. I don't even want the things, I suppose I could just sell them. But I know myself and i am bad a selling electronics even if I don't want them.
Oh and went to Sprint's website today and I could not even click on the HTC U 11. I hope they didn't stop pre-orders. Or I could just till the device comes out I suppose.
If I buy the Sprint version from HTC. Can I still have Sprint unlock it?

last time I checked the device had to be active for 3 months before they would unlock, but not sure if anything has changed....but like I said earlier, it's not difficult to unlock yourself

Pre-ordered mine today and haven't received any sort of confirmation email from HTC. I also got 2-day shipping...we'll see if that makes any difference as to when it will :fingers-crossed:show up. :fingers-crossed:
Edit: Cancelled my pre-order and confirmed with 2 people on the support staff that they will not be shipping until mid-month.

Hey guys. Kinda bad news. HTC (Germany) just told me after telling me this morning my unit will ship today that it will ship on the 8th of June.
I asked why they didn’t contact me and sent me an email telling me it is delayed. They just told I am expected to contact them in order to know my shipping date. A bit ridiculous.
I sincerely hope they don’t have hardware issues.
Well if it’s the same as with my pixel xl then we all have to wait because HTC cant keep its production up with the demand.
