Hi.
I have been searching the forums and the web all day for this, so please don't kill me if I've missed another tread about this!
I love my Galaxy Tab, but i hate the youtube app that comes with it. Even in "HQ" the videos are really blurry.
I have found several sites talking about YoutubeHD.apk and downloaded it from 3 different locations. Tried to install it via Astro, but I always get "did not install".
Have anyone managed to get this to work on the Galaxy tab?
Thank you in advance.
Try this, I haven't tried it.
Back up the Youtube.apk in System/Apps. Rename your new apk to Youtube.apk and copy it in to system/apps. Reboot.
If it doesn't work copy the original Youtube.apk back into its original location (system/apps)... then ask someone who knows more than me.
Thanks for the tips, but I only get "insufficient permission" when I try to move/change the name of the original file with Astro.
Any way to avoid this?
Files probably read only.
Do you even have root access?
Sent from my SGH-T849
did you go into applications and check the one to allow non trusted apps. it blocks any install that aren't from the market unless you check that box. I'm guessing you did but I just wanted to make sure you didn't miss something small and bang your head for too long.
Indeed, you will need root access and a root file explorer. I use 'Root Explorer'. Before doing this, go to Settings > Applications > Check 'Unknown Sources' box.
If you aren't rooted / do not want to root, post a link to the .apk and I will try it for you.
Not sure if the videos are in HD or not, but I use an app called TubeMate.
Go to the Android Market, and search for TubeMate. It allows for viewing and archiving of any YouTube videos in the same browser.
All the videos I've watched and archived using this app has been of great quality, not blurry at all.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
I have root access, and have tried renaming the file in Root explorer(get a "read only" message).
I have also checked the "allow non trusted apps" box.
Heres the link to the APK:
mediafire.com/file/zzz1ktzy2nl/YouTubeHD.apk
If anyone with a little more knowledge about Android could try this it would be great.
I wish I could help ya but I haven't experienced this problem....all the HQ videos from you tube look great on my tab?
Ins0: Look at the pictures in this post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=7120200&postcount=2
Is your youtube app really as crisp as the tubedroid video there?
Try to download a HD version of a file, and then stream the same file. You will see a HUGE difference.
In almost all the forum posts I have found around people mix HQ with HD(and they are happy with HQ), maybe I'm just to much of a perfectionist...
There is a new Youtube app on the Android market.
I have updated, and it is actually a little better, but still not even close to the quality I get when downloading the same file in HD from jetVD.
Have anyone else tried the HD apk i linked to?

I think jet vd is the best and you can even download youtube on tab

JetVD is great, but as far as I know it's not possible to sign in to your own youtube account? I use youtube mostly because of my subscriptions. Still nobody tried the APK i linked to earlier?

I was told before I bought the captivate that there was an app to download you tube videos to the hard drive. Does anyone know how to do this?

I've used an app called "VideoBox". It's free, but you have to sign up for an account (you can make the account from with-in the app). I'm not sure where it's storing the video files, but you can only watch them in VideoBox currently. There is another app(YouTube Ripper I think it's called) that is supposed to allow you to download videos from right with in the YouTube app, but it appears to be broken currently.
Hope this helps.
yes it helps thank you. I was under the impression that there was already something on the device that would do this.
Hi
Readability for Android is released today but only on the Amazon Marketplace.
Will anyone be able to please post up the .apk for it so the rest of us can use it?

I'm getting "not available in your country" even though I'm in the US and it's supposedly available through the Amazon app store. Anyways, if anyone could post the apk that would be great!
here for everyone
brilliant, thank you!!
Strange...I got a Epic 4G Touch and I can't see the app in mt Play Store and when I go to the online Play Store, I get the message that my device is unsupported.
However, I downloaded and installed the app with no issues from the Amazon Store.
Thats because they have disabled google play download for US customers for this app. US customers need to download from Amazon store.
Thanks WingnutStrikesBack for the apk. But it does not seem to install on my galaxy nexus. Anyone else have this issue?
Same Problem
I´m able to install it, but have force close issues everytime i try opening it it.
Readability v1.0.apk
Thank you

awesome!
I installed the app, signed up for the service, etc. How do you link pages from your phone browser to it? As far as I can tell the only way is to copy the URL and paste it into Readability which seems like way to many steps. It doesn't even show up in the list of browsers in the "Open with" menu. You need to be able to share the page with the Readability app directly from the browser. It's actually faster to just save the page directly to your SD card to read later. If I'm wrong about steps to adding pages please correct me. This seems like it could be a really useful app but at the moment it needs a ton of work IMO.

u can use the integrated browser too. but it shoudve been showing on the share list as u said, that wouldve makde it a very practical app

I know you can use the integrated browser, but most of the things I would save are links I'd open from Twitter, etc. and since you cant choose it as Open With it's worthless. This app looks nice but that's it. It is very poorly executed.

Does anyone have the app for the updated version that was released yesterday? I believe it is version 1.0.1.
its been explained to me that hulu isnt free on android so i deleted post
I doubt you will find anyone who will tell you how to watch hulu+ for free when its a paid service.
Most Hulu+ threads that are around were about getting the app to work on the thunderbolt. If you want to watch it, you have to pay the fee.
You can try using standard Hulu thru the browser, just put the browser in desktop mode and see if that will work. Mobile view will not. There was a thread here that had a file that you could replace the standard files to let you watch on your phone. That worked for me.
ok deleted
Hello everyone,
I have been trying to install "Root Browser Lite" version 2.1 from the Google play store, but for some strangely odd reason, i am having a weird issue.
Everytime i try to install it, it says: Cannot install, Inefficient Storage available.
That would obviously mean that i dont have any space left in the Application partition of the internal memory, but to my suprise I do indeed have plenty.
I have over 100mb left. And i can install applications that are over 15mb without a problem, litterally right after trying to install Root Browser.
Its only a mere 1.3 mb download and cant be too much more extracted..
Ive uninstalled applications, cleared my cache, rebooted, among other things and still cant get this one application to install.
Maybe if i install the .apk from my sdcard i could install it properly..? So could someone who has this application be kind enough to share their .apk?
Or we could somehow try to figure this out. But like i said it hasnt been an issue with anything else at all..
Also, so you know and need not ask, ive tried nearly all other file explorers right now, and so far they have all been really lame in my opinion. Currently I like the MIUI port explorer, but im constantly getting force closes so I need a change. Root Browser is really nice and is a file explorer I plan to stick with. (If i can get it anyway...)
I have an older version, but I know he rebuilt the whole app in the recent update so I'd prefer v2.1
Hope some body can help me out.
Id really greatly appreciate it.
Thanks for your time.
Have you tried pushing it through adb?
I have not. As I am not sure how..
Wouldnt I need the apk to do so?
Ohh yeah, you'll need the apk...
There was an extension for google chrome (pc) that allowed you to download apk's to comp from play store...
Just search around, I don't remember its name...
Omg I made a big mistake I meant Root Browser not root explorer... gosh that was dumb...

Does it make a difference?
They serve the same purpose
It does indeed make a difference. I think root explorer is absolutely horrible imo, but I am specifically looking for root browser.
Root browser = sleek and sexy with better functionality
Root explorer = clunky, ugly, dumb icon, fails with its functionality, not much preview thumbnail support, extraction support is a joke, and did I mention ugly?
Just saying id hate for someone to go through the trouble to get the one I absolutely don't want ya know?
Well, you can try file manager by rythm software, for a change...
I can pretty much believe you'll like it...
As regards for root browser, I don't use play store, so am not able to lay my hands on the latest version...
If I get it, I'll pass on the apk of the lite version...
Btw, have you found the chrome extension yet?

Thanks,
So I installed File Manager. I like it, its pretty nice. But I also managed to get Root Browser Installed as well finally, so I am happy about that. So I have kept both of them.
As for the chrome extension, no I didn't yet, because this is the first time I am seeing your post! I wonder how that happened! I was using the XDA Premium application on my phone to post in this thread with you, and for some reason that post didn't show up until I just not visited on my Computer... hmm. weird... But thats really cool, I will get to searching for that right now. I started using Firefox again, with the latest update, since I been using chrome for so long.. But now I am using both, so I will definitely check that out. Do you want to know the name of it when I find it?
And I noticed you mentioned you dont use the Google Play Store for your apps, So what do you use then?
I use other market alternatives like 1mobile market (only free apps here) and others...
I also google around for stuff...
If I still don't find it, I install play store, download apk, and then again remove play store...
Yes please, if you do find that chrome extension, send me along a link

Do you happen to still have the root browser 2.1.0 apk? I'd love a copy. (2.1.1 is giving me issues) Thanks.
ROM toolbox Pro
ROM toolbox pro has root browser and many other features. I can give you a copy of the .apk. I will upload it in this post.
i don't know if it is right to open a new thread so i did it to have a general discussion about youtube and its new upcoming feature
if any mod thinks that this thread should be closed then there is no problem by me
here is an article of what i am talking about
http://youtubecreator.blogspot.sg/2013/09/heads-up-about-upcoming-youtube-mobile.html?m=1
Is this source official? After reading it, I can only think of it as forcing you to download content. YouTube is probably safe, but pushing content to your device without you asking that seems quite absurd. I believe there will be a mechanism to allow this (only to subscribed channels or even a dedicated switch for that).
Seems like a nice feature, but with today's network speeds it's not that much of a problem.
BTW, before adding features, they should fix the UI on both mobile and PC, moving the quality setting to a submenu is a crime (especially when it's on 360p by default when you can play 1080p without any problem).
actually i doubt if that feature will be acting without user's permission but we will see it soon enough
Doubt they will do this. Google is try to get rid of YouTube downloading apps and plug-ins, so why would they purposely force you to download videos?

i believe it is just a feature
generally everything is happening for a reason not incidentally

When you watch a video you download it to your computer. After watching it, it is deleted. Everything you see on the web is downloaded to your computer (even this comment). What they might do is to make the videos available for you by pre-caching it, so you can watch them offline. And for the anti-download policy - I believe google will encrypt it somehow. There is more than one way to do this.
It sounds like a list you add videos to which will download all to your phone. Then the downloaded videos will be available while offline. Sounds like a Watch Later feature to me

Something like that, with te difference that you add channels to your list instead of videos, and when new videos are available, they get downloaded to your phone automatically for you to watch them, and afterwards (my guess is a couple of hours or the first watch) they are deleted.
I guess it's more like getting the newspaper to your doorstep each morning.
Thread reopened, moved to General
thanks a lot

what do you mean?
I didn't really get what the feature does exactly. Does it allow to push content to my phone without my permission?
Or can I manually choose which videos to download. That would be a really awesome feature and eliminate the need for apps like PVSTAR.
