[Q] A little help please, MB300 (backflip) - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

ok, so I've combed the internet, after work, for days, trying to find an answer to my problem. My problem? I recieved a backflip from att. I like the phone. i previously had an HTC excalibur, which i loved, and had internet sharing, contact synching, and cool software on. Clearly the MB300 can do all this and more, and i'm google fan, and big open source fan, so i am excited about using android.
I was TOTALLY offended to discover my phone had yahoo and att bull**** everywhere that is difficult to remove. Anyway, i updated to 2.1 (eclair) and rooted my phone using rageagainstthecage. here is where my problem evolves.
My phone is rooted after rage against the cage (using # in connectbot). but, after a restart, its back to $. damn. if i redo the ragecage business, i can get the # again, but only until my next boot. fix?
the more pressing matter, is that it is an utter pain to code on the phone itself. when i connect via adb, i can't seem to run adb shell as root. Is it possible to run adb shell as super?
even when i have a # in connect bot, I get an error when i type su? cannot link executable etc...
super use runs, but obviously not well since it doesn't confirm when i su in connectbot.....tried to update in recovery mode, but the zip isn't listed.....why must this be difficult....i blame att.
am i not really root?
i would have tried visionary, but it seems to have dissapeared off the internet.
i am trying to install jrods rom, but i can't get su, even though i successfuly did the ragecage business....
help?
i really want to get this att crap off my phone. (the phone defaults to google, which i appreciate, but i really need to destroy the att stuff)
thanks,
S.

G1 Security

Hi all,
I notice on t-mobile (uk) you are accessible to all other t-mobile users on their internal 10.x.x.x network.
I have two sims and can shell from my home machine into my G1 wherever it is and vice versa (which is great, but...)
However this also means other people can too, and I notice the JF image I'm currently running (1.41 - rc8) is permanently listening on port 5037 (i.e. adb)
ADB is a debugging tool, my hunch is this wouldn't be too hard to crash, and leading on from there to run an exploit on it.
adb is of course running as root, so if exploited it's game over....
all in all, I'm rather concerned some 1337 HaXor is gonna take over my phone.
sure I can kill adb, but it would be nice to not have it running at all unless asked for.
Can I remove it from a startup script somewhere?
TOP TIP, make sure when rooting your phone you don't leave telnetd running else you are asking for trouble!!!!!!
I'm surprised no one has commented on this matter yet (I noticed it this morning.)
This is truly something that T-Mobile would have to fix on their end. I haven't had a chance to try it out today, but when my brother gets here I'll be sure to give it a shot (he has a G1 as well.)
I haven't tested this, so I can't vouch that this is an accurate description of how the system behaves.
However, adb should ONLY listen on the usb port. Listening for an adb connection on an internet-facing interface is just crazy.
I don't see adb running as non-root being a big help either. You can still compromise most of the personal data on the phone and run almost arbitrary commands on the phone as non-root. You just can't change the system image.

Captivate "1click root"

Please pardon my "Noobness"
I have a captivate 1009 with 2.1 update1
I am not real savy with command line edits, so, I went to the app store and downloaded "Ryan's" one click root (free). Downloaded the free TiBu, a terminal emulator, clockwork recovery, and I guess I was not sure what to expect after. I had tried some of the other 1click root programs on here but they did not seem to do much. IF I were to try some of the latest version of the 1click root, can I put it over "what ever" I have on the phone? So far I have used the clockwork recovery to help with the back up but really don't want to disable the phone doing something wrong.
I am probably over my head already, but would like to enable the phone to most of it's capability and remove the AT&T stuff I will never use. BTW, my GPS works good on sat signal only disabling the cell function and I have not experienced the shut downs like some others (lucky!!)
I would appreciate any basic help to put this phone on track.
When I rooted, I never got the "update.zip" option when I went in to recovery mod, but I had "SU" icon in apps.
I have scoured the forums for weeks now only find contradictory information and workarounds !!!
Also, my first smartphone, hence my screen name !!!
Thanks
Never had that problem, you did go to recover to actually activate the root from ryans right? That has worked on three phones that I have done so far.

[Q] New to rooting

So this is my first ever Android device, and coming from an iPhone, I must say I like it a lot. I am used to iOS, but it was not a difficult switch.
However, as with iOS, I am looking to tinker with the phone and get the most out of it. The 3 things that intrigue me the most about rooting my Inspire 4G is the updated radio flash, the fixed audio, and the overclocking ability. The phone flies as it is, but I always like to get the most out of my devices.
My biggest handicap, is coming from iOS, I have had it all handed to me on a silver platter. It had its twists and turns, especially on the iPhone 4, but it was basically click and go to jailbreak the device.
Not so easy on my Inspire.
I have read, re-read, and re-re-read all the tutorials I could, and I have downloaded quite a few files, but I stop myself time and time again. I am in fear of turning my phone into a brick.
Anyone care to give me some pointers? I am fairly technologically inclined, but I am also cautious as well when treading on new grounds.
The only pointers I can give you is to set aside about half your day just in case. I've heard of people doing it under an hour and I've heard of people trying to do it all day so it just depends on how everything goes. Try using bubby's method, he did a really god job on bringing all the stuff you need into one exe file. Also, download the Inspire hack kit just in case you get lost on a part. I used both of them when rooting my Inspire. Good luck, if you get lost check out the sticky at the top of the forum. One last tip, go through those 2 threads and read, read, read and read.
P.S. this section is for development.
I promise once your done and get used to the platform, apple ios will seem like a joke .
The hack kit is not hard to follow at all with the included instructions. Set up adb, create gold card, run scripts and follow directions.
It's hard to brick your phone if you follow instructions. You can also return it to stock condition if you choose to. One important step that I recommend is make sure you turn off any antivirus/antimalware program before you download/install/run the program or scripts. Also, follow the suggestions that were given previously.
I recommended the hack kit, over the one click personally. People have been running into a lot of problems using the one click.
Use the hack kit, its easier

So following the hack kit, I successfully created a Gold Card, and began the process of downgrading the ROM. However, when I initialize the "hackerize-ace setup-downgrade" prompt, I get a "The system cannot find the path specified" although I do get the infamous # that is supposed to give me the "go-ahead"
When I try to go ahead and run the prompt "hackerize-ace install-downgrade" I get the pushing rom info, but nothing happens.
I have tried this as the instructions dictate to do with the phone on charge-only and debugging mode on. I disabled fast boot, also tried to re-enable it.
I'm lost...

Be patient. It takes a while for the ROM to be pushed to your SD. I didn't think it was working the first time either, but I just let it go and it worked fine.

[Q] Can't get SuperOneClick to run. Help?

I upgraded my AT&T Samsung Captivate from Froyo to Gingerbread a couple weeks ago, when AT&T released it. I had nothing but problems with it - my phone would reboot repeatedly, it would freeze multiple times a day. I tried factory resets, GSM resets, removing apps, nothing helped. My phone was basically unusable. I gave up and took it to a local AT&T Service Center. They seemed very aware of the problems, and recommended reverting it back to Froyo. I had them go ahead and do it. They got Froyo back on it, although they somehow broke the Contacts. Each time they pressed the Contacts icon the phone would Force Close. The "tech" didn't know what to do about it, and recommended that I go to the AT&T Retail Store and see if I was eligible to buy a new phone! Once home, I did a Factory Reset (from the Menu button), which resolved the Contacts issue.
I'm OK with having Froyo instead of Gingerbread. There are a couple features I like better in Froyo anyway (Data Network Mode off the power button, Silent option from the pulldown menu). The only thing I miss is the ability to install non-Market apps. I figured the easiest way to get that would be to root the phone (I had rooted a previous Captivate, but didn't do this one after it was replaced, since I was waiting for the Gingerbread update). Anyway, I downloaded the latest version of SuperOneClick and installed it, but when I try to run it I get an error message, saying that SOC stopped working and Windows is looking for a solution. I’ve tried running it on Win7 32 bit and Vista 32 bit machines with the same results. I’ve tried running it as an Administrator. I’ve Allowed it when asked for permission. Is there something I'm missing in order to get the program to run? I know there are other ways to root it, and other ROMs that I could run that people here would say are way better. I like SOC because it's fast, easy, and allows me to unroot if necessary. Froyo does what I need it to do, so I don't need a different ROM. Can someone just please tell me what I need to do to get SuperOneClick to run?
BTW, before anyone suggests it, before even trying to root I called AT&T Tech Support and asked them to push a patch which would allow me to install non-Market apps. After 1 hour and 22 minutes on the phone, in which the tech consulted his manager, and a higher level tech support in Alabama, they determined that it could not be sent to my phone (just kept saying Pending). They really couldn't explain why it wouldn't work, just that it wouldn't. Rooting seems to be my best and easiest bet.

Moving to Q&A
I managed to get SuperOneClick running and was able to root my phone. I think the problem was that I had downloaded multiple versions in my attempt to get it to work and they weren't playing together well.
Maybe it could be a driver incident... check it how to fix it dude.

[Q] Rooting a soft-bricked Galaxy Note 1 phone

For many of you, my question may look either very familiar or just a piece of cake.
To me neither it is familiar nor easy...
What I have done so far:
Crashed on how to install Android SDK and enabled ADB.
Now my phone is on Recovery mode and ADB has detected it.
I tried the command adb pull, adb backup. Both didn't work as my phone is not rooted and stated "remote object doesn't exist"
What I am after:
Need nooby proof steps to root the phone using adb or any other possible way (which I could decifer)
Then use the command adb pull to get my contacts, possibly pictures.
Some are saying to re-flash. But I am not sure the side effects of re-flashing. I just don't want to lose my data.
To give a bit of background: phone went on soft-bricked in Samsung Service Centre while I was looking for point to charge it as battery was zero charge. Accidently the staff connected my phone to a machine that does software upgrades and disconnected from it.
I am a super noob about the jargon of Android, how things work internally etc. I was just a person who used the phone for messaging, watching lectures, storing music, photos and browing. No games, not much apps.
