Simple (and probably dumb) rooting question - Epic 4G Android Development

I am quite the newb when it comes to android and rooting period, if I already rooted my phone with a simple oneclick root, and want to use a new oneclick root, one with clockworkmod as part of it, can I just reroot by following the oneclick steps or do I need unroot first?

Well if you already have CWM installed then you shouldn't need to use the new version of the one-click-root method. All this does is simplify the actions even further by doing both tasks at once. If you do want to, for some reason, use the newest root method then I would suggest unrooting first just in case any errors occur with files already existing etc. Hope this helps!

Technically you shouldn't need to do an uninstall, but it doesn't hurt either...

I have rom manager but I don't think I have cwm. Everytime I test it by rebooting I get an error message and the options are still blue unlike the green options that I have seen if cwm is working. Is there some way to just install or flah or whatever it is cwm? If so, where do I get it and how do I do it? Thanks

Rom manager won't work unless you have a kernel that supports it. I'm assuming that if you are rooting then it is the stock kernel and rom manager install won't work. You can install right over it if you want. Honestly the simplest way for me to do this was z4root from market and then clockworkmod recovery one click. Not the all in one. The try this last.bat seems to be less prone to failure. And if it is giving you trouble I might suggest that you install the usb drivers on another computer and run cwm rec from a thumb drive.

What... the easiest way is to download noobnl one click zip and the drivers.
Install the drivers (exe). Restart the pc and the phone. Plug in the phone and let it install the phone. As long as it installs adb driver you'll be fine. Extract and open the one click and start the .exe in there. A black window opens, press enter and it should go to town. If you hit enter and it pauses. Just restart the pc again and unplug the phone. Open the one click .exe again, plug the phone in and hit enter. It will go.
Phone restarts and your good to go with clockwork.
5 roots, 5 different computers. Perfect every time. Noobnl has made this cake.

I used the noobnl oneclickexploit when i rooted my phone, i have not flashed any roms or kernels that i know of, please hold my hand and walk me through the process of what i should do to get clockworkmod flashed, should i follow the steps listed above or do i have to do something more?

Honestly, I prefer using the all-in-one batch file.
Install your drivers (if you haven't already)
Turn on debugging mode on your phone
Extract the .zip from the link above somewhere on your pc.
Plug phone into computer and let it recognize.
Run run.bat from the .zip you downloaded.
Press 1 to reroot. It will remove previous roots. Say yes when it asks, andlet it do its thing.
Press 3 to install CWM, say yes, let it do its thing.
And that's it. I've had some phones hang the first time rooting, but after restarting the phone it usually works. Also, keeping the screen alive seems to help. Always give it a few minutes to do its thing, but if it hangs, restart the phone and try again. It may help to restart the computer. I've seen one computer with buggy drivers that refused to do this or odin, but I have successfully done it with both my laptop and my work computer without too much trouble.

Press 1 and 3 on what, my phone or my computer?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk

on computer. when you run it, it'll be a command prompt and you can just follow the instructions on it.

Ok, I understand all those steps, thank you. Next question, is there a place where I can find clockworkmod by itself, if so where, and how do I install?

2.31.651.7 fix.... No computers... No flash backs... Just root, recover and flash!!!

After receiving my second Hero I had noticed something weird about its software version... From what I remembered, it started with 2.27 on the last one I had and raised my curiosity/concern. I had heard about a root patch that was being sent out OTA by Sprint and after a little digging found the extremes that everyone was going through to achieve a successful root. The most common was to flash back .6 then to .5 which doesn't have the patch. I spent over an hour trying to find ANY copy of the 2.31.651.6 update and could not find anything. Then there where methods using the SDK which I'm sure could work, however the bootloader was a b!tch to access. I thought it would be entertaining to see If Sprint's new .7 root patched could be broken simply by the android market and third party developers; no use of Odin, unrevoked, HTC sync, no messing with debugging, not custom 2.31.651.7 (careful) and absolutely no flash backs! So here it is... enjoy.
All you will need ready is:
1).zip file of whichever OS you plan to flash. (I prefer the cm build's).
2)Rom Manager from the market (work's well with clockwork and cm).
3)Heroroot101.apk (Don't remember if it's on the market or third party).
4)NANDROID!!!!!!
All you do is run heroroot010 and push the root me button.
Reboot your phone and let it fully boot back up (give it a minute or two).
Turn it off and boot into recovery by holding down volume button and power.
I'll be damned there is a recovery image now by darchstar.
At this time there is no need to wipe just choose and flash rootme.zip
When you reboot you will see that sprint know's you're rooted already and wants to update you... This is fine.
Open Rom Manager, flash Clockwork (replacing darchstar) reboot into recovery mode and flash your new OS (DON'T FORGET TO WIPE).
I like your detailed method, but SuperOneClick was really easy too.
Install HTC Sync (v2 for Hero)
Enable USB debugging
Open SOC
Click Root
Plug in phone when prompted
Wait a bit.... then done.
There really is alot of outdated information on these forums. All versions of the stock ROMs can be rooted one way or another.
Above is two possible solutions
I agree with porkrinds but y would you replace Darchstar Recovery its the best IMO Thanks Darchstar

Hey man I just used your little posts instructions to root my Wife's hero (my evo is already rooted)
I can't believe how easy that was thanks so much everything appears to be working I have superuser authority and am going to try flashing a new rom momentarily

[Q] g2x 2.3.3 rooting

1st my name is juan i am new here.
i already did the steps One-Click-G2x-recovery-flasher-09-06
and was able to Booting into ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.0
i download cyanogenmod 7 and try to run it but after everything is done
i get the cyanogenmod 7 reboot loop, also i was able to restore back to
the way i had it. i am a total noob at this, so i can use ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.0 does that mean i root my cell or not. i also download super user.
i tried to root my self since SuperOneClick v2.1.1 did not work for me since it always froze on step 6.i would love any help i can get to root my phone and be able to use apps such as Titanium Backup/super user or rom manger.
thanks for you time
Did you clear the Dalvik cache and do a factory reset? If not you will most likely get a reboot loop. You should format the system, user area and Dalvik cache any time you change roms, or the loop is likely. Try again but zap everything first. Good luck.
OK I did as you said it works fine now I have super user and rom manager working without it saying I need a rooted device. Now I am back to my default for the main reason that I didn't have my apps, android market, contacts and I could not connect to my T-Mobile network.I read I can use titanium backup for but I can't since it tells me I need a root my device. Anything I can do about this?
Should I installl the P999_2.3.3_Stock_OTA.zip I found on this forum would that give me root access sorry for the noon questions and thanks for helping me on this.
Sent from my LG-P999
If you install CM 7 it is already rooted. You an also install the pre-rooted OTA and it will be rooted. I suggest just starting over, logging into Google and reinstalling all your apps. I have had bad luck and near disasters trying to use Titanium backup to restore settings on other devices. It only takes about an hour to redo everything on Android.
i would like my phone to be rooted and not lose or have to reinstall everything i am still trying SuperOneClick v2.1.1 but i finally got pass step 6 and am now stuck on step 7 >,<

Super One Click doesn't work. Google closed the exploits that made it possible in new Gingerbread builds. I have been working on a way to do it without having to redo everything but so far it is not working. Hopefully soon. Will post something when and if I get it working.
thats to bad v,v i got to step 7 using this
if you are having the remounting failed problem then try doing this (credit to g0mezz http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=3995974) :
1. Download SuperOneClickv2.1.1-ShortFuse, after download extract the files into a folder with the same name as the archive.
2. Connect the phone to the PC with Debugging mode (Enter the phone settings menu, to the Development and tick the USB debugging mode)
3. (In Windows 7, but for Win XP you can use "Command prompt here" or similar) Go to the ADB folder inside the SuperOneClick folder, hold down shift and right click from the ADB folder, click on "Open command window here", than write:
adb devices (after this command you should see your device id)
adb shell
echo 1 > /data/local/lge_adb.conf,
Do not close the window, leave it like that.
4. Start SuperOneClick.exe, leave the settings to the SuperOneClick as they are when it opens, click on ROOT and wait, it will say Starting ADB server..., than it will do it's job and than it will appear Waiting for device... it will say ok and that if it freezes while running gingerbreak do the following:
a. Turn USB Debugging OFF wait until it will appear in the window again Starting ADB server..., after that,
b. Turn USB Debugging ON, and after this trick it will start rooting.
Disclaimer: YMMV, i tried this on a gingerbread P500 after trying every other option and failing, and finally rooted using this method.

2.3.3 doesnt have a root working thru one click u need to do the nvflashrecovery process and have the prerooted rom on your phone to flash after you get the recovery on your phone. So i'd start over get the rom you want dl it to your phone then follow the nvflashrecovery process. After its done acsess it and follow the steps on flashing the rom you downloaded. If the market doesnt let you download anything do this go settings-> manage apps-> click all apps-> scroll down to market-> wipe data. This should allow you to reinstall your apps
I already can root my.phone but I still don't want to lost my contacts or data which is why I went back to default instead of staying in weapon g2x mod.

Rooting my G2x (got CWM working already)
Hello everyone! Big time noob here, and was hoping to have some questions answered regarding rooting a G2x that came with Gingerbread (2.3.3) stock. I searched and read quite a few threads, which answered a lot, but a few questions still stuck out. Any help is very much appreciated!
My process so far was to start at this thread. That referred me to TGA_Gunnman's guide on flashing CWM (via Nvflasher) at this thread. That worked well, and I'm able to boot into CWM. So far so good, but here's where the questions come in.
In TGA_Gunnman's guide, there's a link saying to view the Getting Started Guide located at this thread. That Getting Started Guide links back to the "CWM via Nvflasher" guide, so I performed those steps as mentioned earlier (step 2.1 in the Getting Started Guide). Then it says to install ROM Manager (step 2.2) and so on to create backups. Hmm...
From the first thread I linked, and some other threads, it looks like once I have CWM bootable using the Power/Volume Down button method, I just need to clear data/caches and then flash the rooted ROM of my choice. Please chime in if this is incorrect (though from the replies in the thread, my understanding seems correct).
(Q1) Using this method, is there any way to perform an initial backup (Titanium, etc)? It doesn't seem like it, and I'd hate to lose all my apps and have to reinstall/configure, but it's not that big of a deal. (I did a Nandroid backup via CWM already, as detailed in step 4 of the Getting Started Guide.) I see some folks in this thread recommended just re-installing the apps, which is not out of the question. Just thought that if a backup/restore was possible, it might be worth a try.
(Q2) I have to ask: what ROM(s) do you recommend?
Thanks in advance for any help and information you can provide!
Oh I can help I just had the same problem OK you can do the following 1st make sure u have a SD card one big enough I have a 8gb next you can back up apps, contacts and settings using antivirus pro u can just Google the apk n install it.I didn't want to change much in my phone so I just download Gingerbread 2.3.3 rom
Then restore my apps then my contacts and such.
Stuff u need
Antivirus pro-for backup
Rom of ur choice
Androzip- to install apk if u dl antivirus pro apk
This is the rom I used
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179748
You may use whatever rom u want
Now 1st u use antivirus pro to back up apps and contacts then you can install your rom when done you can use androzip to explore your SD card and find the antivirus pro apk install then restore you apps and contacts sadly the apps lose all data so that means new game n such I hope this long explanation helped I just learned this today ..
Other roms

Root help ragequit

Alright so I've been on the computer for 2 straight days trying to root, I've downloaded drivers downloaded Google addons, when I try and update driver it says none are found yet I do everything correctly, also I flashed ClockWorkMod on but it can't find the SD card (maybe because it's not rooted?) Also I've tried using the superoneclick flash or whatever its called and gets stuck on waiting for device. I read that maybe CWM didn't work properly is because I installed it incorrectly, so when I go to reinstall using NVFlash it noe says USB device not found. I have flashed cyanogen on my hd2 with much ease but tthis is apparently rocket science, well anyways I need all the help I can get from you experts so PLEASE any advice or assistance is much appreciated. Thanks

Follow the link in my signature that says "rooted". Are those the instructions you followed? Or did you do something else? And yes, the superoneclick method no longer works. It generally worked on 2.2 devices, but after the 2.3 update, it rarely worked.

Yeah I followed a lot of rooted instructions and those are one of them, but it says can't mount SD card and even if it doesn't need the SD card it says installation aborted.
I don't know if you still need help, but I will try nonetheless. No matter what your phone came with, nv flash cwm 5020 then flash any rooted rom you want. You need to remove your battery then hold down both volume buttons, then plug your usb cord in. Your looking for new apex device in device manager. If you are successful, the next time you do this, you will see your device as a nvidia bootloader device in usb connections in device manager.

There is literally no information in this posting that someone can use to help you.
Blackknightavalon's direction to the SDK webpage is about as helpful of a reply as you can expect to solicit with the information you have provided.
This is like going to a car forum, and saying " I have a blue camaro. It won't start. I tried turning the key. Help please"
What commands are you trying to run through adb?
What errors are you getting, if any?
What do you see when you type "adb devices"
What operating system are you running on the computer you are trying to connect from?
Have you turned on "usb debugging" in the options menu on the phone?
There are a whole lot of things that can be your problem, and we'd love to help, but we can't help you if you don't tell us what's wrong.
Doubtless someone else will get back to you before I get a chance to, since my time is very limited these days online, but posting some more information about your problem will elicit a response that may actually help you.
Best of luck!

Make sure you have current adb drivers for your phone. It will show android composite in device manager. Fastboot will show fastboot device. Seeing a yellow question mark is bad.
Make sure your pathing is set up right.
Typing "adb devices" and if you see your device. If so you're ready to roll.
I usually get fastboot errors like this when I don't have drivers installed right.

I get Error Message with ADB
Hey guys, so I perm rooted with S-OFF my mytouch 4g slide, with theunlockr.com youtube video and guide using revolutionary. then I attempted to install a ROM with ROM MANAGER, and it got stuck on the splash/loading screen. After some searching I found out that this meant that I could have potentially BRICKED the phone, so I followed theunlockr.com's guide to UNROOTING the phone, and it worked, I flashed the original stock tmobile rom, and it loaded fine, I tried to start the whole process again, but now I get stuck in the very beginning, trying to get TEMP root, I start the fr3vo exploit like the guide stated, but then i keep getting error messages on the command line prompt saying that there is an error with ADB, then when I power the phone with volume down and power, the revolutionary is no longer on the top of the screen, but it still says SHIP S-OFF. Does that have to do anything with my problem? is there a way to GET S back to ON, so I can start the process over? or am I better off having S off??? I installed ROM MANAGER and tried to flash a recover image thinking that having S off would allow me to do this, but I get error messages saying there are problems with the permissions. the web site for the guide I used to root is this one incase anyone wants more details into what I did, any help would be greatly appreciated. theunlockr.com/2011/09/09/how-to-permanently-root-and-gain-s-off-on-the-t-mobile-mytouch-4g-slide-revolutionary-method
Use perm root method. Myself I flashed oneclick in recovery, but you can follow the guide the perm root part.
Btw rom manager supports flashing of the new cwm only. I checked the roms in rom manager they aren't supported. You have to go to the cm7 thread here and download and flash cm7 from recovery.
Just redo root process and install cwm from rom manager. Then go to the dev section and flash your favorite rom in recovery. My sig has directions on how to do everything.
Also if you're having permissions error use root explorer on the rom manager apk make sure it has execute checked. Also I think rom manager has a fix permissions button. Its never worked for me.
S off will allow flashing of cwm. However you need to be rooted to flash cwm threw rom manager. My sig has a guide on installing cwm without being rooted.

Thanks for the QUICK reply, but I looked at the guide, and it stated I have to have recovery installed, BEFORE I do the perm root method, but I dont have recovery, when I do HBOOT, and I try to boot into recovery, I get a red exclamation mark on the screen and I have to end up taking out the battery. Thats why I was wondering if having S OFF from the beginning now is what is messing me up when I am trying to ROOT again, I mean, I am doing the same steps.... just now I get errors when I try to do the TEMP root step... so I cant continue... and I cant get ROM MANAGER to flash a recovery image... is there a guide or steps someplace that can guide me to root the MT4G slide already having S off?
I found the problem myself, I had to enable USB Debugging.
I had USB debugging enabled.... hmmmm you made me doubt myself... I guess I will try it again, since I flashed stock rom again all settings were reverted... so I cannot VERIFY I had USB debugging on, but I was sure I did... I will try again and post... I am reflashing the stock rom like 5 times a days trying to root again =(
wait... cwest31, you had which same problem? because I was writing about 2 problems: about booting into recovery with S off, but no recovery image (hence I got red exclamation mark), and trying to get ROM MANAGER to flash a recovery image on my phone since I have S off already, but I get error messages (problem with permissions)

What he said.
Also ROM MANAGER WILL NOT WORK UNLESS ROOTED. Get rooted then try flashing the image. The compendium also has step by step guides using terminal emulator once rooted

Also I want you op and the other one to be clear on what s off is and root.
Getting S OFF allows unsigned zips to be flashed. This means you can now flash roms and root. Without s off you cannot root, rom, kernels. S OFF is not root.
Root is gaining admin rights over your phone. this allows programs that require access to the root files to have access to them. ROM Manager, titanium backup, drocap, setcpu will be granted access to the root files and programs which unrooted phones would not be granted access .
This can be a reason why you two are having trouble using rom manager unrooted. Rom manager cannot access the files it needs

gain root after odin back to stock

I need to root. After bricking and using odin to get back to stock, my phone wont root again. why, you ask? well, because the phone will not connect to the computer via adb interface. I have usb debugging on, I connect my phone, it installs to the computer, but adb wont work for me. neither will super one click. is there a way to root without using a computer? maybe through terminal emulator? or an app that will work? I know z4 wont work i tried it. someone please give me some advice here. im on xp, i have tried different drivers, tried rebooting the phone, nothing works. please help.

I bricked my sk4g due to bad rom flash. I wanted to try one click unbrick, but couldnt get it to work on my computer. So my only other option was to odin it back to stock. before bricking, i had rooted it with superoneclick. i immediately tried superoneclick after odin. several different things would happen. one, it would go through the whole process and say i was rooted, but root checker pro would say i didnt have root. two, superoneclick would tell me my device was unreadable. i would ignore it and it would go through, but still not rooted. three, superoneclick would hang after killing the adb server. I then attempted to root manually. I downloaded rageagainstthecage and atempted to push it through a command prompt. I have sdk installed and all the other necessary things for a manual root. but when i typed adb devices in command prompt, the list came up empty. i deleted all the drivers, plugged the phone back in, and let the drivers reinstall several times, but my device still will not connect to the adb interface. the drivers are installing, and the usb is connecting through storage mode and firmware update mode, but not through adb no matter what i do. i am on windows xp and i do not have another computer to use. someone please tell me how to root another way or possibly flash a rooted rom through odin. thank you.

And now you should successfully rooted on stock firmware
some of those pages I have already been to. the stock rom you linked is the rom I used to odin my phone. some of those pages were confusing to me, and as far as cwm recovery goes, need root to change recovery binary. before bricking, I had root and cwm. what i need (sorry to sound like such a noob) is a step by step in this thread. please dont post links to me unless they apply to my particular situation. superoneclick, odin, cwm, these are all things i already know how to do. my question is how can i root if my phone wont connect to my pc through adb?
also, odin still recognizes my phone. i can still brick my phone and odin it all day long if i want to. I used the tutorial in one of the links you posted and downloaded the odexed stock rom and followed the tutorial exactly. the phone works, but i cant root it. there has to be someone who can help me figure this out.
bumping this thread hoping someone out there has some useful info for me. thanks
Did you turn on USB debugging?
settings->applications->development->USB Debugging
yes I did. adb is not connecting.
basically what I need is a way to flash a rooted rom through odin or another way to root without using adb. possibly without connecting to the computer, like through terminal emulator or something?
what if I added superuser, busybox, and su to my stock odin rom that I have and just odin again? would that give me root?

I think I should start a new thread so I can be a little more concise. I can see that at least one person here completely does not understand what I am talking about.
No just edit the og post

xtrem88, do you understand what I am saying? I bricked my phone and had to use odin to get it back to stock. now my phone will not root. superoneclick runs, but for some reason doesnt configure root properly. i end up with superuser installed, but no root. when i try to root through command prompt, i type in adb devices and the list comes back empty. what I think I want to do at this point is odin a rooted rom.
Ohhh ok now i get it you got to. Odin it again and do not connect storage

I am updating the firmware through kies mini right now, since the firmware i odin'd wasnt the latest. I just unmounted and removed the sd card. are you saying that was the problem before?
Yeah dont use the sd card

I got it rooted. Im on KD1 firmware, but at least I am rooted. I feel like a simpleton, though. Wait till I tell you what the problem was. I was using superoneclick the whole time, and it wasnt working. I re-read the tutorial for the umpteenth time to see if I had missed anything, and it finally dawned on me that each time root had failed, I hadnt rebooted my device after running superoneclick. I just ran superoneclick, it did its thing, I disconnected and rebooted, and voila, I have root. I verified root by going to superuser and updating the su binary. thats how i knew it failed before. each time i would try to update su, it would say obtaining root access and it would fail. this time when it said obtaining root access, superuser asked for permission and i knew I had root. I am so ticked at myself for spending so much time doing it wrong, but so happy that I finally did it right lol. the whole time I thought odin was causing the problem, but im glad to know it wasnt. now i know if i brick my phone again, i can just odin and root and the phone will be back to running and rooted in like 10 minutes.
Lmao
