So from a GR-12 standpoint I must say gingerbread handles just about everything better. with the random odd bugs here and there... so far gingerbread is already showing some awesome stability and speed. much kudos out to the devs here! You guys do a great job and from what I've seen here so far... you put up with maybe one too many ignorant rude individuals. BUT! I would like to extend my thanks to all you devs and helpful members here... and for making my switch to android not only an informative one but a great experience all together.
So... anyway. loving gingerbread (GR-12 mainly). After loading up launcher pro almost every single bug or issue has vanished. seems the twlauncher has some deep seated issues lol.
Looking forward to the new releases!
I totally agree, Ive been running GR-12 for a couple of weeks now and its silky smooth. Oh and im also using launcher pro for the same reasons. lol
A different launchere makes all the difference doesn't it!? After I realized that every time I had a snag or crash it was "twlauncher"... I figured I'd try replacing it. and sure nuff... Awesomeness came spilling forth. Honestly haven't had a issue since. (well I flashed the kc1 modem which gives me the gps performance I need... ).
Outside of my own retarded moment bricking my phone while flashing it... Tearing through 3 old power supplies to get the right combo of resistors to build my own jig.... lol! But all is well that ends well.
What's everyone else's setup / experience with ginger on their cappy's?

Does GPS work on your Gingerbread ROMs? I know the Vibrant it doesn't and I am on ATT, so I am looking to trade for a captivate if it does.

worked for me. I was able to pick up a signal within 30 seconds and hold it for almost the whole way to my destination. Not amazing but I've accepted that, now - lol

significantly better than froyo (at least for me). There are some people with a battery drain issue but I'm thinking its an app thats not optimized for GB. I dont think its a ROM or KERNEL issue - but I'm not a dev so I can't back my statements up.
Both battery and gps are better on GB. Gps is wayyy better...

Are you able to give me like how many hours on average you are getting? I appreciate all the solid feedback.
Gingerbread has been horribly buggy. The battery life is just plain awful, it's laggier than 2.1, and it killed my dog.
Someone was bound to say something negative, so I just got that out of the way. Lol
Actually, GR-12 makes my Captivate run as smooth as my Inspire. I got about 12 hours heavy usage with the screen almost max.

that's a loaded question because it depends on MANY factors:
-signal strength in your area
-3g vs wifi connection
-general phone use (phone calls, sms, games, etc...)
For me, the phone lasts MUCH longer. I can go about 20-24 hours until I need to charge again. Thats with medium use and wifi connection 80% of the day. On standby, my phone usually drains 1% - 2% an hour.

Thank you for all the help. The response here is much more positive than the vibrant forums.
glad to help out. hope it works out for you.
EDIT: I should add, though, that when I'm not on wifi (using 3G), my battery doesnt last as long. So I prefer to be on wifi as much as I can.

That is good to know. I will keep that in mind.
So far on continuum its been rather smooth, using go launcher btw.
Battery life is bad though. Less than 8hrs with moderate to heavy usage. I need to fully recharge two to three times a day now.
On froyo I'd get 12-15 hours with similar usage.
Gps works fine, but then mine did on froyo before.

I'm experiencing battery drain, GR, Continuum and Mosaic, I leave wifi on and after 9 hours (fully charged, battery stats reset, standby mode [literally 0 use, I was asleep]), cell standby had used 33%, wifi 30%, .... I had 52% battery left.
GB is smoother, for sure, once kernel development ramps up for GB (JVB, JVH and JVO, ... JV#) i'd expect to see more tweaks include power and performance.
If you need battery life and don't want to risk flashing GB, wait.
battery life *IS* going to depends heavily on how much you use your phone. It's hard to compare battery life amongst people that cannot stand next to each other and compare phones because describing "heavy" use is different for everyone. My version of heavy is not the same as the next person.
the only real determinant of battery life that we can all use as a comparison is to see how much battery drain you have on standby or to run some sort of application that runs videos (ie. benchmark apps) because we can all do that. If your phone drains 2x as fast as mine on standby, then we have a problem with a rogue app or something else.
(clarification: I dont mean to use a benchmark app to see the results of the app itself. I just mean to run something on the phone to drain the battery quicker and view the battery life at the end of the test).
I've always experienced better battery life with Froyo, and I use my phone every single day for reading PDF's, listening to music, texting, calling and surfing the web. Maybe Gingerbread has better standby battery life, but when getting a "full" use out of my phone I've always lasted longer on Froyo builds.
So, I just flashed this ROM yesterday.
Full charge over night took phone off charger around 7ish this morning. Did a quick 30 minute run/walk workout w/the Cardio Trainer recording (tracking w/GPS), all while listening to the FM radio. I have had two phone calls totaling about about 7.5 minutes. Maybe 35 text messages in and out. I'm in a strong 4G area, I do not have my phone set to automatically get email. I just turned off the facebook hourly update, just noticed I hadn't done that yet ..... my phone is already barking at me that I need to plug it in.
With the exception of my run and listening to the radio this morning I really haven't done much .... I downloaded a couple of apps and tweaked them, but seriously 3.5 hours of battery before it's telling me less than 10%.
Any suggestions?
I did not clear the battery stats, in my past experiences that really didn't do anything to help (but that was w/the Eris).
I'd love to have GREAT battery life that everybody talks about. Anybody using this ROM have stupendous battery time? Not sure what has sucked the life out of this.
Thanks
I'd say it's the GPS that killed you.
same thing for me on bamf gb 2.1. i was at 20% after 5 hours of use

IDK about that, I've gone out for the same 30 minute walk/run w/the battery on yellow (on stock rooted) and the radio going and it hasn't killed it. I think maybe it's part of it, but IDK it's all of it.
I've put the phone on strict 3G, going to totally KILL it tonite and turn it off while charging.
Have you tried recalibrating your battery since installing Bamf 1.8 stripped? Maybe it's not a problem with the ROM, but with the battery calibration.
Sometime at night shutdown your phone and then hold volume down and power to boot up HTC's nice bright white bootloader. Leave it alone until it dies (the phone cannot die properly while running Android, since Android will shutdown the phone when it thinks the battery is low, rather than when the battery IS ACTUALLY low). Plug in the power cord after it dies, but leave the phone turned off. It should take a few minutes for the orange light to turn on because it's so dead. Leave it alone until the green light is showing in the morning. Then start it up. This will get the proper 0% and 100% points for your battery stats. Also check what apps are killing your battery. I was having a problem with Google Maps for a while until I cleared data on it.
I have a similar problem. I will take it off the charger and after a few minutes it will be down around 97%. No big deal. I will set it down and walk away for at most 15-20 minutes and come back and it will be on like 80%.
After that though the battery life stabilizes and I get 12+ hours with moderate use

3g to 4g handoff is the main complaint I hear, but I'm not in 4g area. Have driven through a 4g area and it seemed fine to me. Put it this way, this has been my daily driver for over a month now. i just flashed 1.8 remix i get like 9-10hrs of battery with little to medium use
as ive said i must of lucked out with a solid battery as ive never had the horrid battery life most claim on the net. even with 4g on all the time i get well over 10-12hrs with medium/heavy usage.
a suggestion for a solid kernel is the 3.3.7 lean kernel, don't overclock too high either. i think that's why alot of people have the crap battery life and random reboots.
if you live in an area that doesn't get good 4g coverage id switch to 3g only mode if i were you.

- is this different than what is included in the bamf toolkit?
im using bamf 1.6 and i get 20-24 hours batt life
brightness always on 25%, unless outside then i bump it up and then turn it down when im done. lower than 25% at night when the lights are out and im just watching tv
background data and auto sync both off
moblie data off
use wifi whenever possible
switch to 3g only when youre not in a 4g area and you need to use the internet

I get incredible good battery life with the Das BAMF 1.8.6 NTE so I would expect the same out of Stripped. I would consider another kernel, I am very happy with utkanos http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1025199 Are you on MR2's radio or MR2.5? 2.5 seems to do much better with GPS.

What is using up your battery because if it is the Cell Standby or Phone idle I have a fix for you. I had always had great battery life until last week when it started draining as you describe in your post. I tried everything to get back to where I was but was not successful. I ended up pulling out the 4G card and reinserting it. I was instructed to do this by a Verizon tech. I though he was wasting my time but it fixed my battery issue and I am getting great battery life on BAMF 2.1 and also BAMF 1.86

Hi there,
I am currently running on HTC stock rom with 2.3.4 but currently considering applying a custom ROM to get better battery mileage (i.e. more hours).
I see that all custom roms mention that one should get better battery usage because they have applied some optimizations. But is this real?
What I have understand so far is that battery life varies for every user because everybody uses the phone different with different applications (probably there aren't 2 phones with the same configuration) so any benchmarks are meaningless...
But... If you have used the stock rom and moved to a custom rom , what is your experience did battery life improve? I am assuming that you continued to use the phone in a similar way...
Currently I get between 12-16h hours on my stock rom, what should I expect if I move to custom ROM?
Currently considering moving to Android Revolution HD 3.6.3 XE.
Before being flamed, I looked and searched for the answer to this question but could not get any answer...
Thanks
for me the experience has been reverse... when on stock rom, i get better battery life but when i use custom roms I get worst battery...
Currently running Sense 3.5 and it has something really annoying with battery.. sometimes it would stick at 100% for one hour and then when i start using it for 10 mins it would come down by 20% in no time...
With ARHD 3.6.3 my battery would take too long to charge but with sense 3.5 it takes half the time to charge...
So using custom Roms you will never figure out how ur battery works..

This is misleading as this might be your experience but not everyone's.
I get excellent battery life with Sense 3.5 and I don't get any bad battery readings either.

My battery life improved noticeably with a custom rom. However, when you get a custom rom, you usually also pair it with an overclocked kernel which ups the speed but also reduces battery life a bit.
I'm running ARHD 4.1.3 with faux's kernel running at 1.5ghz and am still getting better battery life then stock. I can use my phone for a full day, not charge it at night, and then still be able to last to about just after lunch time the next day. With the stock kernel, battery life was even better but the phone was also slower.
There are a lot of settings that you can tweak to try and conserve battery life. I keep bluetooth and gps off, and I think that using the GSM antenna only instead of both GSM/CDMA helps, stuff like that.

really? I never got anywhere near close to that. Best was about 6 hours if I used the phone for anything other than talking.
I am currently on the revolution 3.6.3 XE rom and I can't stop smiling. +1 on that. My battery life was horrible on CM7. I tried everything to fix from other kernels, radios and every battery calibration tip, tool and app. I just went back to stock. I was dropping 6-7% battery life while my phone was in standby. If the phone was in airplane mode it was fine. I also tried turning off wi-fi but that didn't help.
I get better battery life using the latest IC Rom. Not a heavy user, a few calls, few texts, 10 +/- emails, decent amount of web and twitter use though, little gaming. Take it off charger at 7am, and when I put it back at 11pm, I usually have 30%-40% of my battery still left.
I am using CM7 alpha9, which is very far from being release-quality. I had thought it was doing very well - 6 hours and still at 80%. But then I had a phone call drop using WiFi Calling, and I had to reboot to regain the use of the dialer. I was at 20% after reboot...
I noticed a huge difference with Revolution HD (no-sense script) compared to the stock ROM.
Very happy with the switch.
Best I got with ARHD and a stock 1.2 Ghz kernel was 1 day, 5 hours, and the best Ive had with ARHD and Faux kernel was about 12 hours.
Typically I was seeing about 8-10 hours with ARHD and Faux kernels. I just decided to try bricked last night so I cant really report too much, although today looks really good so far. I'm already at 10 hours 20 mins as I type this with 30% left. Typically I would be plugging my phone in after work getting in the car on the way home with the Faux kernel. I just flashed this kernel last night so it hasnt even "settled in" yet. Both non-stock kernels are running OC at 1.5 Ghz.
~T.J.
A lot of times people forget when flashing roms and such is to clear the battery stats, this will increase battery by a surprising amount.
When people flash New roms they don't wipe battery stats and that's why there battery life sucks. And yeah sometimes it is the Rom and or the way they use there phone.

Perfomance is better, but the main reason is Sense 3.5. I cant say it effected battery life badly.
CM7 has excellent battery savings.
My battery drops 5% under 1 min without even use of the phone, even when the phone's on standby. After about 3 hours of moderate use (seesmic and whatsapp) it'll drop from 100% charge to about 50%. Sometimes right after I plug it out, I can see the battery drop to 99% then 98 and so on.
I'm running Pinnacle 1.3 now and I was of the impression that it was a great ROM for battery life. Before this I had a stock GB ROM, and then CM7. On CM7, the battery was also horrible.
I've run battery dry then charged it back to 100% and did battery calibration. still horrible.
any suggestions, please?

The battery life was ok with my stock GB ROM. I'm hopeful there're other solutions that don't include buying a new battery.
Sounds like you have a rogue app.
Edit
Try watchdog lite from the market. It should help to isolate which app is gone rogue.
Ah, thank you. I'll get Watchdog and hopefully find whatever is causing all of this.

If that doesn't work maybe just try reflashing. Make sure you have 100% battery when you flash as well. I've used ROMs before that I knew had good battery life and sometimes when I flashed them my phone died fast. I remember it happening on Serendipity VII before. Didn't make sense cause I had good battery life with it before, but that flash didn't go well or something. Reflash brought back good battery life.

I'm not sure what Seesmic is but if you're doing a lot of web browsing that's definitely what is killing your battery life. The display will use more power than pretty much any app out there. I have my screen brightness as low as it'll go and I don't leave my screen on for a long time when I do turn it on. Plus the white colors of websites uses more energy on AMOLED screens.

Will a reflash help? I put Serendipity VII on my and my gf's captivate, and we're looking at about 7 hrs max battery life with minimal use.
I went from Serendipity VII to Pinnacle 1.2 (and then 1.3) and got a lot better battery life. But I switched to Samurai kernel...

Yes I also have the Samurai kernel, along with Voodoo. Still no dice though. I wish I could get the battery life I hear so many people talking about. I've been told to try out dlev 5.0.
Also make sure you have Automatic Brightness, Auto-rotate and Power Saving mode turned off.
i have brightness to the lowest, no auto brightness. i don't like auto-rotate so i keep it off. but i do have power saving mode on. why would that be off?
where is "power saving mode" setting on a captivate? simple questions:
1. when did you flash the rom?
2. Have you seen in settings which process/app is using your battery?

It did for me. I can't remember if I saw the battery life drop after flashing the 4.2 kernel update or not. I think when I reflashed I didn't flash anything and left it with version 3 or whatever it comes with.
Also, on Pinnacle I am using all stock stuff (kernel, modem), not the Samurai kernel or anything.

It should be off, it works with auto brightness to keep it dim and "save power" but if you're not using auto brightness its just another process running that is wasting resources.
Auto brightness is pretty useless on tw roms because that handy brightness adjustment by holding down the status bar and moving left or right.

1. Like Reamer09 says refash.....BUT don't forget to wipe data, wipe cache and dalvik cache. Wiping data and cache just before reflash.........it helps with my battery issues. I don't think there is any ROM out there with that bad a battery life. No dev would let that pass
EDIT: Just re-read.....your battery dropping like that after recharge can be a kernel issue......it happens to me on a a particular kernel (will not name ! devs all work very hard on their kernels.....) and flashing another one helped.
Ok I will reflash it. I've also noticed some lack of responsiveness while using the phone. For instance when I select an option in a menu anywhere, it pauses a bit (probably a second or two) before it carries out the selected command.
Another example is while I'm typing, I have haptic feedback on and so I feel a vibration everytime I touch a letter. The vibration is usually just a short buzz, but once in a while I feel a strange longer vibration. It's weird, really. I hope reflashing will also help with this.
so I've been bouncing back and forth between 2.3.3 roms and CM7 based roms lately and one thing I've noticed is that on all the cm roms I've used the battery seems to drain really fast while using the phone (web browsing, texting, anything basically with the screen on) compared to stock based roms. I can litteraly watch my battery % drop while I use it. I've tried various kernels, oc/UV, keeping screen brightness low, none shows too much improvement.is this a known issue or is it just my phone?
It could be just your phone. I'd say completely wipe your phone, and reinstall everything. If it doesn't help, then it might be the battery. But I would usually (with CM7 and Faux's DS kernel) average around 12 hours.
I'd also say give an ICS rom a try, I average around fifteen hours moderate to heavy use.

I did that too. I actually uninstalled pretty much every app I didn't use regularly and any stock replacement apps like yahoo mail app, swiftkey x, and a few others... but it didn't make a difference. my drain isn't too bad in standby, about 1% per hour, its when I'm using the phone. for example, say my phones fully charged, if I unplug it and surf the web, go on xda app, Facebook, and play a couple rounds of Scramble w/ Friends for lets say an hour straight, ill be at probably 40% left or less when done. on a stock based rom I'd say I'd probably be around 60% or more left. I'd stick with 2.3.3 if the camera wasn't so crappy but I take a lot of pics so no go.

Ive noticed this too. i have great battery life on any 2.3.3 any other roms seem to drain pretty fast. However i was able to tinker with some custom kernals (faux and morfics) and get the battery life to be noticably better on 2.3.7 roms like Singh,EB,CM7 etc. Bigger battery helped alot too. i use the Gorilla Gadgets 3500 mah. at least 2x more battery life than before easy.
