[Q] New to android, Can you point me in the right direction? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

hey, i am a current Maemo 5 user and untill 2 days ago a iphone user aswell.
i got so sick of the iphone, with it being slow and restricted even after i jail broke it.
anyway 2 days ago i got offered a trade for my iphone 3g 8gb for a HTC Magic (Vodafone) , this is the first time i had ever used the Android OS and i was very impressed with it, so much better than iOS.
So as i am still very much a beginner on this platform i was wondering if you could point me in the right direction on rooting it. I know you probably get this all the time, but i have spent hours on Google and have found a lot of different methods to root it, and i am unsure on which one to take, with so much different information it kinda gets confusing after a while .
so if someone could post a link on a good guide for me to start on and working links for the files needed, that would be most appreciated.
i am fairly technical minded as i successfully Flash/Mod/Hack Xbox 360, Wii, PS3, PSP, Iphone and other things....
the info that i think is relevant for which guide i need to follow.
HTC Magic (Vodafone)
Firmware Version : 1.6
Sapphire PVT 32B Ship S-ON G
HBOOT-1.33.0004
CPLD-10
Vodafone Branded
My main goal for rooting is that i want to remove the Vodafone app and splash screen, and in my experience Generic Firmwares are normally alot better, I heard sumat about using Custom ROMS?
and one question, do i need to back up all the contacts etc before rooting?
Thanks to anyone who helps me, and sorry if i have posted it in the wrong section.

Here, and here.
Search is your friend.

thanks very much.
i actually rooted it and installed cyanogen 6 last night, was to late to post that i had done it.
it was extremely easy surprisingly
anyway all is going good apart from 2 things.
when the GPS initiates (the little satellite flashes on status bar.) the phone reboots, everytime. not sure why. but i have had to disable GPS until i can fix it.
will this be a suitable fix? hxxp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=782242
and alot of the time my signal bars show no signal, but it jumps up and down abit , then goes back to zero...
but other than that i love it now

[Q] E FUN Next2 (Nextbook2) Rooting?

Hey y'all.... just got the E FUN Next2 (Android 1.5 eReader) that doesn't even have the real Android Market on there. I'd like to just simply wipe it and put a vanilla install of Android 2.1 or 2.2 whichever is fine with me. However, I can't find anyone out there who's even tried to root this bloody thing. Y'all have any helpful hints or could even point me in the right direction? Here is are the specs for the eReader http://www.nextbookusa.com/productdetail.asp?product_id=1
HELP ME, OBEWON! HELP ME!
Hey, i also just got one, I have been basically searching for the same thing you have with no luck.
I have asked at nextbookusa if they planned on having any sort of update for a newer version of droid and they said not anytime soon.
So i would like to find a way to install droid like you or im thinking of returning it for a dif one.
I second that request!
Got an E FUN Next2 as a gift and I can't leave well enough alone.
Android 1.5 just isn't cutting it! HELP!
Lets go people, thought you all would right on top of this...
I have a programming background and I'd be willing to help if I knew where to start at least.
No headway. Need help!
Ok, since this if my first Android device (received as a gift), I'm not going to give up on it! I've been reading, here on XDA and other forums, and found a ton of other information, but nothing seems to pretain to the Next2.
Found a bit of hope on a thread following the Next3 on androidtablets.net (I'm still a low level forum user, so not outside links yet.) Unfortunately, I tried running the generic root tool Universal Androot with no success (still no root access).
I'm also having trouble due to the fact that the pad has no PHYSICAL home, back, settings, etc buttons. It seems to negate a lot of the basic rooting applications out there.
I realize this tablet isn't the most amazing and spectacular device available, but it has some potential, and I'd like to see what it can do.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
The more and more I mess with this Next2 the more I figured I got what I paid for. The is a great unit for reading books and minor bs apps..Most of the apps will install but won't work...And most of the apps that are available are bs and have no use...lol This site is usually hot on new gadgets and help the common folk out...Please figure out how to turn this KIA into a Hyundai...lol
So you can root this with Universal Androot 1.6.2 Beta 5. This gives you perm or temp root access. I haven't seen a rom for the device though. I really want to get rid off the the extra os junk.
has anybody had anyluck with the next2?

[Q] Custom ROM for MID knock-off tablet

I have sh***y tablet with some useless modified version of android ( or at least seems so). I'd like to know if there is custom android ROM for those cheap chinese tablets that are on the market right now. And also how to flash it eventually
Ive got the same man. I cant even find out how to put it into recovery mod. Its not worth the time or effort.
I have one of those tablets too... They are a ****, I should have saved those $100... in order to buy a real tablet!
Help is here!
Hey guys, I completely agree that these tablets are useless right out of the box. After doing a lot of searching I found some custom ROM's that make these tablets 1000% better. Just got to techknow.freeforums.org/wm8650-1-3-0-hybrid-honeycombmod . There is a forum where you can identify your tablet and then download one of these amazing ROM's. You can thank me later.
If any of you would bother searching, you'll notice that there are a few dozen different threads regard chinese tablets and custom roms. You need to identify which tablet you have, what chipset it's running and then read through the threads.

SAME HERE - TREK HD 9020a = total PoFS!! Lasted less than 2 months b4 it bricked
Yep I was dumb enough to believe the douchebag at AT&T when he told me I could get a new nice which was supposed to be a Samsung tablet but they were out & conveniently said they wouldn’t get anymore of the Samsung’s in so I would have to take the trek junk or nothin. It lasted 2months tops b4 it bricked all on its own somehow - guy I got it from said there wasn’t anything they could do so basically I got f’d paying several hundred dollars 4 a 5 dollar made in China sweat shop piece of fn **** bcuz I had to pay 10 per month no matter what til the time was up or I had paid off what was supposed to be FREE.!! YEAH RIGHT! If any1 was curious what phone I got with the tablet I got this Samsung note 5 - total price of SH!T too & the 1 & only time I have ever left my jailbroke iPhone b4 or since. Lol. But i found the old trek hd 9020a & figured I’d c if by now maybe some1 had a good recovery rom & a way to load it onto a bricked device. Can any1 help please? Thanks in advance - sorry it was a bit long. Only thing it will do is bring up the AT&T android logo screen at the start & the stays on anywhere from a few seconds to maybe a minute then it goes right back to unresponsive blank screen til ya do another hard reset.

[Q] Hello I Am New

Hello everyone, I am new both to this site and to the world of Andriod, Ordered my first ever Andriod Desire-S after being in a huge confusion between Desire-S and Galaxy-S, i found Galaxy to be too common, relatively older model and err not sexy
I am reading on all this "rooting" stuff and at this time its beyond me, i hope i can access market place and install apps and games on my new phone without having to worry about rooting it? Or am i stuck with the stuff which comes on the phone only?
My confusion is what features would rooting give me? Should i stop worrying and enjoy the existing U.I and get used to it before trying to jump at this rooting stuff
you can access market withought rooting your phone.. the only reason to root is to change stuff that are build in the operation system.. including tweaks and more..
First enjoy the phone as it is..then think about changing

I'd say as a new comer you'll be plenty happy without root for a long while....and it should give you the ideal chance to learn the O/S and whats involved without any chance of doing any permanent damage to your phone.....
Enjoy...its a lovely device!

first of all welcome to the forums
as ben said if you are a new user you will be able to enjoy your phone without rooting for a long time & also get to know more about the OS
& also there is a certain risk involved while rooting & flashing new roms & radios so don't do it until you completely know what you are doing
you can read along in the net to get more info about the platform & all other things
here are a few pages explaining the rooting buisness

i love the experience till now just few things bugging me ... coming from BB 9700 (which i still use) the battery life is very low (in comparison) so i am adapting myself to charge it every day and a half.
The default sms application randomly crashes on me so i have to use this another app i got from market place called Handcent SMS
Also i applied for swype beta and installed it but it does not seems to work across the board, it started working in few applications but not all, maybe swype is making the default sms application crash?

Battery usage is about right. Try playing with how often things update and turn off data when you don't need it.
Handcent is better anyway!
Hence 'beta'. Doesn't mean it'll always work.

A day & a half from a modern smartphone is ok, I was getting a lot less when I first got DS - well, new phone, you're gonna play around with it some, no?!
Enjoy what market place has to offer & I would say don't get too sucked into rooting unless if course you have experience of flashing custom roms on other phones & someone nearby has use of xtc clip! Think it'll be a little while yet before software rooting is available for us DS users, and a while more before it becomes stable/reliable.
Peace, & enjoy

have u encountered any problems with the phone thus far?
No problems at all so far. All native apps run smoothly, very smoothly actually.
Installed "Lookout" from Marketplace for security reasons, and installed then uninstalled an app-killer after reading that these actually cause more trouble than they're worth
That's all really apart from the occasional reboot - manual, not forced - which I think is a personal hang-up coming from blackberry!
Peace

Hi
Been using this phone for a month now, coming from iPhone.
Truth be told, what is writen above about rooting is right. I have gone down this road and although it is fun to be able to customize almost every aspect of your phone, it needs a lot of time and involvement to get it right, not to mention the risk of damaging something.
So, I would agree in taking as must time as you can to enjoy it as it is, get to learn the OS before you tamper with it. Different mods / roms will always be here when you are ready to "play"
Have fun!!
I have a S-OFF device ... atleast the first line when i go into hboot says "SAGA PVT SHIP S-OFF RL"
errr so does this means i can do this root stuff if i want to?
Congratulations! You're one of the lucky few to have an S-OFF DS out of the box!
You can now root your DS. If you're wanting to go down the road of rooting take a look in the Android Development Section on XDA. The Gingerbreak method worked for me for gaining root access. There are risks involved with rooting so make sure you read around plenty first. If you follow the instructions carefully you shouldn't have too many problems!
Happy Rooting!
I am surprised as well I guess yeah I am lucky will read more on rooting to find what can I gain

Well wat can rooting give you...
absolute power to customise your cell as you want...
if you ever used a linux os wat a root login allows you to do...
Also for an android...if you dont root and customise...
Den its like having a Ferrari but driving at 60 km/hr speed...
Hope now you understand its significance...
Lol yeah I have worked on cli on different flavors of Linux and know what Su means although its been some time now, now I sit and give orders lol.
So far I have loved it and find it be so much better than the over hyped toy the iPhone.

[Q] Getting rid of the Stock Boot Screen

So I´ve got the Wi-fi version of the 7 inch gtab, GT-P1010, and it´s runnin Froyo version 2.2.2, but I´ve got root access.
The thing is I got it at a discounted price from a big Retailer down here(Peru), and they stuck their damned brand name on it every time it turns on or off, do you guys know of any way of getting rid of it? I´ve seen a couple other posts, but they mentioned it might vary if its a wi-fi version, I would think that since it doesn´t have a carrier concerned with hacking or w/e that it´d be easier, but I don´t know.
Any help would be greatly apreciated! and im not much of a modder, so I´d need an explanation through easy street lol.
thanks in advance!
since its rooted, try ROM Toolbox app ... you find it on the market
Experiment at your own risk. Should be pretty safe though.
This is my post which is closely related.

Clock constantly losing sync

Greetings, just a couple weeks ago I got my first smartphone, and this is my first post around here. Hope it's in the right section.
Well, its a LG Optimus E615 (same as E610 with dual sim).
Running Android 4.0.4, kernel 3.0.8-perf, rooted according to this topic. Alright so far.
I wonder if you could help me with an issue I'm having
Problem is since I first started using it, I noticed that the clock always goes out of sync, about 15minutes to as much as 3h a day.
I'm gave up on automatic time and timezone already, since they are no help, so I ruled out operator giving wrong time already.
I searched around, found some topics like these[/ur] and [url=http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1999614&page=6]these, but they are of no help =/
It's kind of frustrating that even my old Nokia 6110 classic is able to keep track of time, so I can't believe such a high-tech device like this (ok, its not an S3 or S4, but still) that does alot more can't.
Google or LG doesn't seem interested in fixing it as far as I can see (it was already acknowleged by them)
The fact I received the phone as a gift purchased while traveling to another country makes it next to impossible to return or change it, so I'm really looking forward to resolving it on my own.
Would you guys be able to point me to some way?
Thanks in advance
Your gonna be pretty much out of luck. Most dual sim phones out of china are clones using different hardware then what they say they have. They also do that work really well with US carriers. So your best bet will be to check some Chinese forums
