Hello guys,
(for those not willing to read a lot - please proceed to the questions in bold)
so far, I've been using Android phones ever since. Came from the G1, moved to the Hero, temporarily had an affair with apple, which turned out to be no true love. You know, I was physically attracted, but her character.. son of a biscuit!
So I'm proud owner of a HTC Desire for about 2 months now, really enjoy the possibilities of customisation, the android market is amazing, and the desire really runs fast and smooth.
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to get an HD2 for not much more than 200 Euros, and with the upcoming videos on HD2 in liaison with Windows Phone 7 OS, I'm really really impressed what the HD2 can do. However, Windows Mobile kind of sucks regarding apps, and the lack of style really makes me love my Desire.
So, my questions are:
If I compare Android 2.2 and WinMo, I must admit that WinMo is not my cup of tea. Not very intuitive, far away from being perfectly styled (as the Iphone UI or Sense 2.2). Though, I really like the HD2. I love the gigantic screen, it's actually what I've always wanted. But not with Windowsmobile!
1 - Can Android 2.2 on a HD2 be compared with Android 2.2 on a Desire, concerning stability and usability, is it responsive, bugfree and quick?
2 - How possible is it to have a smooth and fully working Windows Phone 7 operating system on the HD2, and when do you expect such a Rom to be released?
I already found some discussions (search for: Desire vs HD2), but actually nothing dealt with the acutal discussion conceringn WP7, sorry.
I'm hoping to hear some nonbiased, honest answers. As you are probably using an HD2, feel free to argue for it. But don't forget the other side.
Sorry for the English mistakes, I'm not a native speaker. Thank you!

well..changing new phone soon~ and these r two giant monsters which i kept my eyes on it.
hd2, winmo 6.5, big screen, terrific snapdragon, and bla bla bla. well, i'm a diamond user so i've already getting used to WinMo. it attracts me because of its fabulous 4.3 screen and its processor. well, rumor says it can be upgraded to winmo 7 though.
droid, android 2.0, 16M colours and 3.7 screen, a lil higher resoloution compare with hd2 but lost in the side of inches, 0.6'. and heard that it's using a so called newer technology processor, Cortex A8. 550Mhz processor but the speed is almost same with the iphone. One big holding back is the Android which i'm not familiar at all. oh ya, the crystal talk attracts me too.
So, can somebody tell me the good and the bad between this two? XD kinda in dilemma though.
share ur information and comments here!

well guys, added another ANDROID phone in between choices now~
the NEXUS ONE. well, kinda appealing to me..=)
really kinda bored with WinMo as HD2 is using wm6.5 which i'm using now in diamond too. the only attractive thing is the super duper big screen, while going off to android, i'm a little skeptical as i really never ever hold an android-based phone.
ok~ sony Erricson X10~ another rumor-said amazing android phone~ a very high resolution-screened phone and high megapixel. but, wonder it can be upgrade to eclair or not...
hard choices..>.<
regards,
billy.
Stay with HTC!!
I would choose Leo or Rhodium
this two articles about the Motorola Milestone (Droid) might help you in your decision:
http://smartphoneblogging.com/2009/12/review-motorola-milestone-droid-android-2-0/
http://smartphoneblogging.com/2009/12/review-motorola-milestone-droid-hardware-impressions/
I have written both reviews, and especially the android 2.0 review should give you a good impression of what android offers on the Motorola Droid.
I wa using windows mobile devices since the mda magician, and switched to android (htc hero - i wrote a 5 part review series about the switch to android: http://smartphoneblogging.com/tag/htc-hero/) and didn't regret it. Android is really a great os, and if you get an htc android device you have xda devs support too, so you could also consider getting an htc hero or wait for the nextgen htc devices. I wouldn't get an HD2 at this point, because wm just isn't competitive the way it is right now, and nobody knows if wm7 will change anything.
I'm sure the Android OS is great but I believe it's some what restricting in allowing the user to go above and beyond the typical customizing.
If both are supported by xda, then that variable can be excluded.
But the variable that has everyone curious is the fact that WM7 is coming and the HD2 is in the lineup of devices that get a free upgrade to what might some are anticipating is Microsoft last chance in keeping there 8% market shares alive.
This might be an apple and oranges like comparison which typically means one of two things:
1) very easy choice
2) very hard choice
I would go to the HD2 world of things. Keep in mind with the fact that this device being fresh on the market simply means patience is needed before everything gets ironed out by the fantastic chefs here in this xda community.
Good Luck with it all.....
Lot could depend on your carrier & location. Even if you buy unlocked, it may not have 3G like the HD2 in the States right now...
I'm crossing over to the Nexus ONE!

Would you consider adding the X10 to this list?
I am considering all the above phones too, but my preferance for now is the X10.
It would save me starting what would basically be a replica of your post......
could anyone layout in terms of usage as well? i'm an engineer who basically deals with attachments from email (ms excel, word, powerpoint, pdf, etc) - maybe a bit of editing would be a plus =)
HD2 looks nice with the big screen + integration with microsoft, kinda lean me over to it but supposedly there must be 3rd party apps that can go with android, is there? how bout iphone?
love the part on phone tweaking too...so, any suggestion guys?
thanks!
-phone noob-
sneasel.. depends on wat u need actually.. n i dont really know whether android has those 3rd party or not as i'm winmoer XD but seems like hd2 suits u though.. =)
yup!
...and im officially a HD2 user! ;D
Dont go for any wm devices
look man ill put it straight. windows mobile have no sense of ownership of there own brand. They are lazy bunch of ppl out to make profits out of ****ty operating systems. I would recommend you to go with android operated systems cuz they are so much better, refined and have a sense of ownership not of what they create n you can see that on how well there operating systems look and operate. PERIOD
HTC systems are great but they are a waste when they're with windows mobile.
hurmm...from the looks of it, you are quite right, htc do have a great system...on android, i've never used one, so dont know anything bout it...since i got HD2 on my hand, hoping cud put in android to try em...
well...is like they say, what suits one, that will be the best~
Help me to choose! The main thing is to choose between WM or Android. Plaese give me some pieses of advise
HTC Desire! It is more compact, lighter, has AMOLED screen.
Most importantly, it has the modern Android 2.1 (soon 2.2 Froyo), which offers so much better user experience than the old WM 6.5.
Go for Leo!
Windows Mobile in combination with powerful 1ghz processor is amazing!
And that big screen is so nice
Android is too young and limited yet
HD2 is one of the most amazing piece of hardware kit I've seen in a phone in the last couple of years. Get it even if it's just for the build quality.
Desire is the way forward my friend.
Think of it like this:
Desire is a beautiful highway with multiple exits.
HD2 is a dead end in a crappy neighbourhood.
How interesting!
Question for me too! The fact that Android is so very nearly on the Leo isn't helping!
Take it from someone who has had both, well, I got rid of the HD2 for an N1(The N1 is essentially the Desire..)
I loved the huge screen, it was beautiful, I hated WinMo. I had a G1 before the HD2, and the Shadow(Juno) before that. So I've experienced both OS's..
Personally, I love Android, I kept waiting and waiting for android to be ported to the HD2 but that didn't happen, until recently, and by then I had already gotten tired of it and traded the HD2+100 for the N1.
So I'd say go with the N1.
Comes down to what you want to use it for, if you want a business oriented phone go wimo. If your looking for something more polished and entertainment based go android. I prefer wimo over android personally. But I think I'm gonna make hte jump to droid when WP7 gets released. If I'm gonna have to pic an new school OS its gonna be Android. But for the next year or two I can see stayign with wimo. Once you get your prefered rom installed and get your tweaks installed its my HD2 on 6.5 is bullet proof. Haven't even reset it in 9 days.

Totally agree...and with Android 2.2 FRF91 it just keeps getting better!
I prefer entertainment and I also own Topaz now and I think I had enough of WM. It lacks cool games and apps. Ive tried them all already, and I dont think that its wise to use these expensive and powerful devices only for making calls and sending sms, so android is better I guess, it has plenty of great apps.
Hello people I am very very new to this form, and I am looking to get a HD2. Now I would like to know two things... 1) is there some sort of android program to put on the HD2.... 2) who has one, that can tell me their likes or dislikes!
Sent from my Motorola Cliq
I love my hd2. WinMo is great, don't believe the haters. 1ghz processor, a beautiful display and good build quality are some of what I like about the hd2. There are a few Android shells running around, but nothing fully functional. If you want Android, get an Android phone.
Edit-
I used Android for almost 2 years and loved it. After having used WinMo for the past month or so, I've realized Android is not all it is cracked up to be.
Since this is your first post I'm being nice... Prepare to be flamed for not using the search feature. Android on the hd2 has been beat to death around here.
If you are a app fan get an Android , if you want to use it just as a WM Phone get HD2
Leo is a great device and you can test Android on it, work is not finished but you can have almost all functions working.
After I tested Android I´m happy to say I´ll stay on WM
But is cool to have both options
Hd2 is amazing device, screen, processor, ram, just makes people gawp when they see it makes you feel like a king,
imo the only good thing about Android atm is you can show off and say hey look what my phone can do
So have any heard if the HD2 going to app to convert to android. I have a motorola cliq now.... and I am looking to upgrade soon. And the HDW is what has my eye. Does WM have as much on the market has the Android?

I have been a long time user of Windows Mobile phones, Pda's for many years, three months ago I sold up and have bought an Iphone 3GS.
Now my initial thoughts were hugely positive and liked the easy simplicity, but over the time using the device on a day to day basis, I have become completely frustrated with the lack of freedom to customise my device, USB uncompatiblity with car chargers forces you to have to spend out on official Apple products, no possibly way to upload images to website from the safari browser, I completely miss my today screen with all the information on meetings and weather etc...
I feel like the Iphone is simply a launch pad for applications and that is it.
OK I really like the Applications available, and it has a very strong following from developers, but everything has to be transfered via Itunes and I have no control over files I need to save, upload, download.
I am a PC user and don't own an apple, I use Google as my main calendar and link it to my outlook for syncing.
I would like to go back to windows mobile, but feel its growing old and not sure of its future, I like the look of Android, but am completely novice to it, also the Palm WebOS looks like a mix between iphone and Windows mobile, but again its following in the UK is lacking.
I really need some help with pro's and cons for each OS and devices, I like the look of these:
Android Samsung Galaxy S
Android HTC Desire
HTC Touch HD 2
or simply stay with my Iphone 3GS
What ever you decide but not iphone would be a wise choice
I would choose Leo as it´s a great device, I prefer stable mature WM over young funny Android all the way
Now you can also have Android on Leo as well
I have used both HD2 and the Desire, and I personally prefer Android more than WM. I prefer the design and build quality of the HD2 more than the Desire though.
You really have to figure out which OS suit you the best, different people has different needs.
Try using someone's Android device and see if Android OS fulfill your daily needs.

Same for me - had windows mobiles for the last 4 years and they are good. Easy to flash - loads of cooked roms but, for me they have become very "samey" - just changed from a HD2 this month to a streak (took the plunge) and it is brilliant but, i havent got my unlock code for it yet. In fact i was so impressed with android i got myself a Nexus one as well, rooted and flashed it this afternoon with the cyanogen mod and its even better....so, its probably the freshness thats saying this but i would go for android.
I've had a Nexus One since April 1st (The irony, april fools) and I've simply ADORED IT.
I'll admit I've dropped it accidentally many times, even face first, and I've only got a few scratches on the back of it xD, and one or two VERY MILD scratches on the display, hardly noticeable.
I just rooted my nexus one and flashed Amon-RA-recovery and cyanogen mod 6.0 rc2 and I can tell you one thing, it's brilliant. And with the upcoming 720p capture hack... oh yes. Android is beast... that's for sure!
Looking for a new phone, i've used WM5, then 6, 6.1, 6.5 - it's always been a fun and intriguing venture, but none have wowed me compared to the stability and ease of the iphone.
Now i'm about to upgrade finally from my Touch pro and all the options seem great (compared to the old WM platform)
I'd like opinions on which OS everyone thinks is the best bet moving forward for say the next couple years. wasn't even considering another WM phone but just looked at WM7 and it's clearly a whole world ahead of 6
Thanks all for humoring me
I have always been a PDA/Smart phone fan started with the palm and moved on to WM phones, and dabbled with symbian too but since having an android phone I havent looked back.
I personally see iPhone as a fashion accessory that HAS to be the lastest one or-else, and a pretty toy, but I cannot comment too much on this as I haven't owned one.
Looking at Wm7 it looks too dumbed down for my liking.
my monies with Android but go with the highest end device you can afford as I got stuck with a HTC Magic (32b) (read too slow and ****e) but playing with the galaxy s I am even more in love with android.
My two pence worth
WM!!
If those 3 were the only OS in the world I think I would go for Android...
But thanks that we have Windows Mobile too!
Which is far away from being dead, even if MS wants it
If you want the stability and smoothness of an OS wp7 and iOS are the two you want to look at. I tried wp7 and I do like it but I prefer ios.

I'm slightly confused...is WM7 and WP7 the same thing here? i feel like between the last 2 posts is there an OS i overlooked or am i just missing something??
windows phone 7 REPLACED WinMo which reached a version of 6.something
