Can someone please post how to remove adds once rooted and clockwork mod is done. Also.. since I know nothing about this. Will someone be able to change the myfas button on the bottom dock to something else? Then i'd feel safe about removing the my favs app with titanium.
Thank you for patience in answering my questions ahead of time.

2. mount -o remount,rw -t rfs /dev/stl5 /system
3.rm -r /system/app/**appname**.apk
In market root explorer
if you are rooted i highly rec ti backup! you can remove system apps with one click very easy. but would make and store a backup before doing this you might want or need it later

...except that you cannot backup system apps with Titanium. You only back up the system apps' data. Once they're gone, they're gone for good, unless you restore a stock ROM or get them from here somewhere. I would backup with Root Explorer and stick a copy on your SD card so you can simply replace them if need be.
Wouldnt a nandroid back replace it? Sorry i should have been clear that was what I meant when I said backup

I just completed rooting 2 bolts this morning and was wondering how one goes about remove some of the additional bloatware. Blockbuster, etc...
Thanks in advance.

first make a back up in recovery.
There are several ways to do this.
Terminal emulator app,
ADB,
or an app like Root Explorer or Titanium Back up
For the terminal app and ADB just
su
--opens up super user access
cd system/app
--changes your path to where the apps are stored
ls
--lists all the apps in the directory
once you find the app you want to blow away, do
rm VZW_Golf.apk
--removes it completly, and only way to retrieve is to find a replacement apk or restore entire back up through recovory.
You could also do a
mv VZW_Golf.apk VZW_Golf.apk.bak
--Just renames the app, it will be unusable, but can easily be restored by renaming to original apk.
Another option, rather than deleting, if you're concerned about needing to put them back some day is to just use Titanium Pro's "Freeze" feature. There are other apps that you can purchase on the Market that let you "freeze" an app as well.
Freezing an app totally disables it and prevents it from loading at startup, autoloading on its own, and even removes it from the app drawer.
This is the path I'm taking for the time being, but I'm not currently worried about the bloatware sucking up precious storage space. If storage for apps becomes an issue, the rm command is only a terminal session away!
Can't get Root Explorer to mount as R/W..Any ideas?

I would use Titanium BackUp and just freeze the apps for now untill you can get a good backup of the Original ROM on it.

get the app "root checker" off the market from joeykrim
My only thought is towards you aren't rooted.
If you are, then I'm not sure since I have never used the Root Explorer app.
thanks for the replies. I used Rom Manager to make a backup.
I'll download the titanium program and freeze the programs. Sounds the easiest option.

Try the "mount /system" app first. After selecting rw with that app, root explorer should be mounted as rw as well.

Reboot the phone a couple of times...re-download SuperUser.apk from the market if necessary, make sure that in SuperUser Root Explorer is listed as having been allowed root permissions.
If you've never seen the pop-up SuperUser request for Root Explorer you won't be able to mount r/w.
Titanium backup same story as root explorer. It also helps in Titanium to click the Problems? button and let it install its own version of busybox - or you can download busybox from the Market as well (I haven't tested it on the TB, though).
I ended up making a backup in cwm recovery then installing root explorer and going through system/app and just deleting the apks lol. have over 470mbs free now! left the odex files for now but removed the apps. If you delete them make sure you have a backup first.
The only app given me an issue is VVW, deleted the apk, renamed odex to .old and still vvm shows in the launcher. not sure what other apk is linked to vvm. any ideas?
so can you not uninstall them with titanium backup then? That would be the easiest way. I was hoping you could as I will be rooting mine here in a few.

You can uninstall them in titanium backup. Or after you root there is a Rom now you can flash in CWR that already has the bloat removed.

I rooted my phone using SuperoneClick for mac/linux, and it was very simple. It said my phone was rebooting and that my phone was rooted.
Now what do I do? What can I do with rooting? I don't see any difference on the mainscreen. What I did was went to look at my applications and realized I have "SuperUser" now.
When I click that, I have LOG, Apps, and settings, the only thing listed is settings. How can I remove certain bloatware that I don't need?
Get titanium backup so you can uninstall bloatware- if you pay $6 you can freeze the bloatware instead of removing it completely.
A program like Root Explorer can help you get rid of the bloatware as well. Just navigate to System/APP and delete what you don't want. Just be carefull not to delete the wrong software, I think there is a list in one of the threads here of what is safe to get rid of.
Yeah, just get an App manager that uses root access (I use Anttek App Manager). You can either freeze such apps or delete them entirely. You can also change CPU speed, and eventually upgrade to CM7 when it's released, and quite a few other things!
Before doing anything though, I'd recommend backup up your phone with Rom Manager.
Okay, so your steps should be this....
First download ROM manager to back up my system?
Then I download app manager so I can freeze/delete? Freezing might be safer for a newb like me.
that is what I did
I backed up the phone using ROM manager, but where can I find where that backup is to make sure I did it successfuly?
If you are thinking about getting into some serious tinkering, custom ROMs, Kernels, etc. You will probably want to use the NVFlash method to load in clockwork recovery. This method and a good backup of your system should help bail you out of the most circumstances.
Yes, but I'm not sure where to find the backup? I want to make sure the backup was successful. Please someone help
Backups will be found in the clockworkmod/backups folder. Check there to make sure u are doing it right and have a backup.
What can you do with root? As a beginner I would recommend you go slow:
1- Install interesting apps that require root: http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/07/13/8-great-apps-every-rooted-android-user-should-know-about/
2- Learn how to make and restore nandroid backups w/ Clockworkmod Recovery.
3- Freeze bloatware with Titanium Backup Pro.
4- Eventually get to flashing custom ROMs once we get some !
Backup should be on your external sd card in a folder called clockworkmod/backup

I backed it up, went to clockworkmod and my backup, but it doesn't say anything when I click it, neither does it show up in the manage and restore backup
bump, anyone?
try again?

why would you do this to your phone and have no idea what it does or how to take advantage of it?
that's like hotflashing a bios just because it sounds cool.
I'm new to it and want to freeze bloatware? And plus, I can google on how to do stuff and "take advantage" of it =) Thanks
And I just made a back-up and that one is not showing up, gave it a name and everything, would the best thing to do is to uninstall rom manager and install it?

that sound like an easy way to get in over your head
rofl, i still can't get even make a backup, i tried making the back-up twice, and it's showing me the first one, but when I go to manage/restore, it doesn't come up
Do u have an sdcard mounted? If not u need one.
Due to some warranty issues, I need to take my rooted and unlocked Captivate back to AT&T. Before I do that I must set it back to factory default. What I don't want to do is lose the programs that I painstakingly searched for and installed onto the device. Some of these I think I can't find anymore. Is there a way to remove these apk apps from the phone and store them onto my PC for re-installation later. Things like busybox installer, root explorer, Superuser permission, etc?
Downloaded apps are stored in /data/app and native apps in /system/app. This path may be different depending on your carrier and OS version. On a Samsung phone I used which was running 2.1, I think downloaded apps were in /d/apps.
If you still can't find then, try running:
Code:
find -name *.apk
. That will tell you where everything is.
Titanium Backup. Backup all user apps + data, then reinstall later. I suggest getting the Pro Key, but it isn't necessary.
If you want something a little more minimal, there are apps that backup a list of installed apps. You can save the list in HTML form. Open it with a text editor from your phone, click the link, and it takes you to the market download page.

Thanks! I have Titanium Backup Pro installed. So, I just run backup and save it to my PC, then reinstall it all later? That sounds SO easy! I hope I understood you correctly. Thanks again!
Yep. Run the backup, then move the Titanium Backup folder to your computer. Since app purchases are tied to your Google account, just reinstall TB and the Pro key from the market, move the folder back, and batch reinstall.
Almost seems too good to be true, but it isn't. I wouldn't restore system apps/settings across different roms or phones. The only system stuff I restore are wifi access points and playlists.
Good luck!

Simple. Just do a nandroid backup and it will be saved in your sd card. If you restore it, it will restore all the apps, system settings, launcher settings, etc; it will be in the same exact state as it was before the nandroid backup. Steps on how to do a nandroid backup and restore from an earlier nandroid backup can be found here:http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-perform-and-restore-a-nandroid-backup/
Before I odin my phone back to stock so I can update to ICS, I want to know if there is anyway to back up contacts, sms, call history, etc. before doing this. I use tibackup when I am flashing ROMS, but I don't know if I will be able to access these backups? And tibackup will not work without root, so I won't be able to use it anyways.
Sorry for the noobish nature, but is there any way to back up apps and system data before I odin back to stock?

back em up with titanium, a root solution is available. just make sure to copy the entire titaniumbackup folder to windows/linux/osx, flash the os, install titanium again, and copy everything from the old titanium folder to the new to restore

i use 'backup to gmail' for my sms and mms, it puts all your messages in your gmail in folders and will restore call log and sms, dont support restore of mms yet... i paid fo it and there is a free version too, i think it limits the number of back-up messages tho...

seriously. At work, trying to get it going on 3 pc's and it took me 2-3 hours to finally get the upgrade. Hope its worth it.
Hello,
I never figured this out yet, but I can't imagine it would be that hard to find;
Let's say I switch ROMs on my phone (Galaxy S4), I wouldn't want to grant all these Superuser requests for all my apps again, one by one. So I've wondered, in which file are these requests saved?
You know what I'm talking about, in SuperSU (in that case), each app has Superuser access "Granted" or "Denied". Where are these permissions saved in the OS? Guessing /System partition, but never found them. How could I back these up, in case I switch ROM, or if my /System partition would become corrupted someday (Well, that's why we have Nandroid Backups as well, sure).
On Linux, we have a file called "sudoers" which list a few users or commands that are autorised.. Not the same thing, not sure how the file "sudoers" work exactly.. But could something similar exist under Android?
I just want to backup/restore all these Superuser requests I've granted/denied. How?
Thanks!
They're saved in the data of SuperSU, just backup its data with Titanium Backup and restore on your new rom and SuperSU will have given the same apps root access
Thank you! =) Pressed the Thanks button.
Kinda obvious now that I know - However for some reason, I've been wanting to backup the SuperSU app for a while using Titanium Backup, but it's just not listed in Titanium Backup (Why is that? I only see SuperSU Pro in the list, weird).
No big deal, I'll just backup the data folder manually I guess, fixing permissions after restoration. Will give it a try.
Problem solved!
