ok so i made an attempt at fixing the buttons today to see if i could make them any brighter and possibly fix the issue with having to press them several times to make them work.
i tore my captivate apart for the first time ever. this was my first time taking a screen off of any phone before so that was pretty interesting, as ive also never had any experience with touch screens or capacitive buttons..
so the outcome? a total success minus one button that i took to much paint off of and made it look terrible, but it does still work, and better than before, all i did was pull it apart and with a precision screwdriver i etched the paint away on the inside, i did make a video of the outcome but not during the process, i realized that my phone is also my camera so anyway here is the video, youtube is processing it so it may take a little while before it works
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVHbWyKoI3c
hmm...it does seem to be a success despite your search button fugg up. I think etching with a screwdriver was a bit aggressive, i think i would have tried an emory cloth or something like that first. But it is good to see that you actually did something about it, congrats man that is awesome

make no mistake, i screwed the button up visually, the only reason i call it a complete success is due to what i was going after in the beginning, and that was to make all of them work properly and figure out the root cause of all these issues, now at least we have information about these buttons and why they dont work, its amazing to me that such a small detail can make such a huge impact on performance. hopefully someone here can repeat my actions and learn from my mistakes and get it done properly.
wow, really cool. that irresponsive problem really has driven me crazy...but i'm still brave enough to do this...is it possible to send my phone to samsung and ask them to do it?

Awesome! I want to try this myself.
Was the paint you etched away distributed across the inside of the case, or was it just spread across the clear buttons? How delicate/skilled of a hand would you say you need?
I'm just trying to get a better idea of what I'll be looking at.

I'd like to know this as well. Would it be possible for you to tear down the device again and take a pictures for us on the forum to view?
I've been wanting a reason to disassemble my phone and this looks like just the reason.
I agree with one of the posts above, I think emory cloth would be a good way to go. You'd certainly have much better control of how much paint(?) you were removing.
i dont have any more of a steady hand than most people i would say, i do work on small delicate things at work but i shake and stuff just as much as your average joe,
the paint is does not go across the whole screen it is only in the areas where the buttons are, what makes it really hard is that the paint area is actually larger than the button itself, there are two layers of paint one black (to fill the middle of the buttons) and one gray (for the buttons shape) and where you are looking at it, its extremely hard to see where to etch and where to leave the paint, i didnt think the black was paint so i just started etching away at all of the gray on my first one and thats when i ended up with the screwed up search button, then the rest i payed more attention to the detail, all in all i think it took me about 40 mins, thats break down/video and everything.
this is a really good picture too look at and pay extremely close attention to the search button and you can see the dip in the paint where you actually need to etch

Start from the top of the screen and pry three glass from the back..be very careful.. I didn't scratch mine at all doing it but it did take time

How do you get the screen to stick back? Did you use any adhesive. Im mainly hesitant because I don't want to get dust between the screen and glass.

The screen and glass stay together so no worries with dust. But it has an adhesive that you can re use

i scratched off the matte finish on the metal cover and it revealed a very stunning undercoat. I think it looks much better. I used an expired credit card to scratch it off. do not use anything metal to scratch it off, it will leave a scratch on the undercoat.
Done on a white mt4g. i think the different colored mt4g have a darker back cover.
Also it takes a very long time to do.
Pictures were taken with flash off because it shines that much.

I'm not sure if you want to do this, if u look next to you sd card theres a gold contact that touches the inside of the battery cover. So the coating my be a barrier between the metal and our hands to prevent signal issues i.e. Iphone 4 like signal issues. Anyone who's tried this confirm either way? I love the look just don't want to regret it later.
Did you just rub the edge of the card on it for hours? Because I've been doing it for a couple minutes and I don't think it's getting me anywhere.

If you look on the underside of the cover, the spot on the cover which touches that contact is etched away. This is to ensure contact is made without obstruction. So there is no "barrier" between the cover and this contact. Just the opposite. My guess is that it is a ground circuit to divert static electricity. Since the cover is made of metal, this would make sense. Scratching off the outer dullcoat should not have any negative effect.

Anyone else have this happening? The chrome is starting to come off my kickstand on the side where you lift it up on the edge. Its really minor now, but if it continues to do this it might bother me in the future as of now its not to noticeable.
Mine has it both on the side and a portion of the top of it. It looks really bad and is very annoying.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Yup, I've got a little spot on mine that's beginning to peel. Actually, mine's not the chrome, so much, but more like the "brushed" part. It's actually shinier under the spot that's peeled off.
I don't really care at this point. I might if it gets much worse.
Do you guys use your kickstand alot? Just wanted to know if this just peels off anyways or so? Cause I would like to avoid it but if its an avoidable then nevermind.
Sucks If it peels off no matter what you do then kinda screws you out of exchanging to get a new one from big red since their warranty has gotten tighter even doh this isn't your fault. Its the build quality.
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA Premium App
Mines peeling too. If you use the kickstand then its gonna peel...
I'm not saying you guys are doing anything wrong, but I try to be real careful with my kickstand, like when I pull it out I make sure I really get under it so my fingernail doesn't scrape the edge and peel. I can see on the very tip where it could eventually start to peel if I'm not careful.
If it ever get's real bad I'm sure something can be done to make it look better cosmetically.
Give it some time and I'm sure it'll look just like this.

trick to it, cut a piece or tape, not huge at all, just to go on the bottom edge of it... and put it there. That or stop laying your phone on hard surfaces when you put the kickstand down. Bingo.
I've only used the kickstand once, and the spot its coming off is along the long edge that doesn't touch any surface.

i use my stand a lot and dont notice any peeling or scratching. i dont really care what color it is as long as it stays sturdy and useful. this coming from a guy with a lime green case tho
Mines coming off slightly, but not from using the kickstand for viewing. I've been using my kickstand only in portrait stance, but the part that's peeling doesnt touch any surface. I believe its just from opening the kickstand.
That said, I recently bought a skinomi full body shield, put a piece over the kickstand and the peeling hasn't continued for now.

Mine started coming off about a week after I got my phone. I tried ignoring it, but it kept on getting a little worse every day. So I started scratching it off, it's almost completely gone now, and it will look really good again once it's all gone.

I was watching the installation video to see the coverage, and it appears that the back, top side and bottom are all separate, and w/it being black on black, it's kind of hard to see what it leaves uncovered. I don't want my phone to look ghetto fabulous, like I just patchworked this on one night after watching a fast & furious marathon drunk w/gaps on every edge.
Anyway, if anyone has, let me know. If not, I'll jump in and try it out and post photos and give my 2 cents.

That's actually one of the benefits of having all the pieces separate, the piece that would cover the metal strip is separate. I agree with you, but I plan to keep the metal strip shown, even if I have to use an exacto knife to make it happen.

I agree... And upon taking your advise, I just bought a 12"x48" sheet of it from ebay. I worked w/vinyl for several years, from custom applications made in-house to pre made applications, so I'm comfortable w/the whole process. The saddest part is, w/o your input, I probably never would've thought of it on my own!
I'm excited, now I can make it fit how I want! PLUS, it was less and I have enough, that I can customize friends phones if they like the look of it... For a modest price of course. <hehhehhehhehheh>

First off, this is a physical mod!!! you do this at your own risk!!!
Second, i seen this mod in the captivate section of xda and i cant find the OP so that i can give the guys credit, but credit goes to him for doing this to his captivate!!!
after i seen the thread about this i noticed that my friend, who has a captivate, had a chip in the ear piece and it was silver with black paint on top of it. after seeing this he said "Take it off!" and so i did...after doing it i seen it looked rather cool so i took a knife and started scratching the black paint off of mine. i think it looks good and gives it kind of an accent from all the black on the phone. If you decide to do this to your phone, please be careful when doing it and take your time. you dont wanna take this piece out or make it sharp and end up cutting your ear 1 day when you answer your phone, so again, please be careful when doing this mod!!!

This reminds me of what I did with my iPod. I took a fine grain sandpaper and sanded the back of my iPod. Looks great now. Unorthodox mod to what we normally see but I dig it Tator, thanks.
What exactly do you do, just scratch off the paint there? Sand it?
I've also been wondering, on older phones you could use a sugar block and scratch off logos like the us cellular or samsung logo. Can we do that?

I just taped off around ithe speaker grate and used my pocket knife's small blade and she's silver and no scratches. keep in mind I keep my knife extremely sharp and was very very very gentle. It took about 5-10 minutes. Thanks tator. Kinda like the new look.
Edit, Also once you scratch most of it off. an damp alcohol pad seems to remove the remnants really well
Edit: OK so this is how I did it and have no scratches what so ever.
I taped the phone to my desk at work. then taped around the speaker.
Used a Knife to gently scratch off as much of the paint as I could.
Took a toothpick and cut one end as to make a sharp blade on the end and used this to "rub"off the paint down in the crease.
Then wet a q-tip and rubbed the remianng paint of the ear piece.
Hope this helps some that are wondering a way to do this.
I wish I wasn't at work. I would post a pic. Honestly it looks like it was made this way.

I can confirm that this can be done with a dime and get a reasonably good result. I didn't have a knife handy but I did have some change so I scraped a dime across it until it turned silver. Try a picture with it facing straight. For me at those angles screen bleed disappears and goes to a faint whimper.

Good job! I had my theories about this same thing, but my screen bleed is minimal- much like yours is now. I had taken it apart to see if the internal memory was a micro sd, it isn't, lol. Very easy to take apart. Thank you for your awesome post.

Thanks OP for that insightful tour (no sarcasm intended)... I love this sort of stuff (though am not experienced with it at all) and you laid it all out pretty well with your pics (not that I plan on attempting this or need to). Glad people like you contribute to the community. Thanks.

Great job! Thanks for taking the time to take pictures AND posting them!
This will be very helpful for a lot of people.
Maybe it should be stickyed?
I can't see any of the pics :/
I hit the thanks button, but would like to further voice my appreciation to the OP. Xda needs more well thought out and detailed threads such as this one. Thanks again for taking your time to share this process with us so thoroughly.
awesome write up op. I hit the thanks.
Also, you think breaking it down all that way I could clean the screen? I got one piece of dust that If I attempted this I would like to clean. Although my screen bleed isn't even noticable and wouldnt do it for that. lol id like to try this just for the dust.?
Try pictures with no light, facing straight on. I am not doubting I just want to see a clear picture.
I hit thanks, and thanks again for the great assembly pictures.
I can not really see the backlight on any of your pictures. But I read that you say its fixed. This is very interesting, because it sounds like its a clear piece part issue.
I think the back-light issue is overblown, but it sounds like if LG used a better quality of foam siding, smaller bubbles with less pressure, that the entire problem could be resolved. So some product engineers signed off on the bill of materials instead of looking for a better supplier of foam. Poor guys in the factory are assembling a perfect job, but the parts given don't work to proper specification.
Your experiment is a great proof of concept....only concern is if actual dust would become an issue over time with this fix.
Thanks again.
PS, as an aside when the EPA required that NASA remove CFCs in the manufacturer of the foam for the Space Shuttle, it was the reformulated Foam that caused it to break off due to icing. After all the original engineering, they decided to use a new mixture, and that caused the damage to ceramic titles. FOAM of all things...and just because of the small amount of CFCs used....not like it was hair spray.....
holy crap man props to you for doing this, i remember disassembling my dell mini 10v to upgrade the ram, wow that was a terrible experience... never gonna open up another electrical device like that again
Anyone who doesn't think open is gangsta, then you should be shot .... mad props.. id put money op is on to something ...
