[Q] Leaked Froyo 2.2 before Official Froyo? - Captivate General

So, I've heard the Official 2.2 Froyo is out in Europe and should come to the US in late November sometime. If I update the Captivate to the leaked Froyo and whenever the official one comes around, would I be able to replace that with the official one?

Theoretically you should be able to flash back to stock then update to froyo via whatever system samsung uses to do it. However some have experienced problems downloading OTA updates after flashing.
Either way I would not worry because it will be posted here, and you'll be given instructions on how to get it to work if you have issues getting it directly from at&t/samsung. This forum is full of great devs and people who do great things so I would flash away if I were you.

Six dozen people have asked this question. If you want an in depth answer use the search button.
Long story short you should be fine if you flash back to stock before updating but there is no way to know for sure until it is released.

[Q] Upgrade HTC Aria 2.2

Should I root my phone first before upgrading to 2.2 or upgrade first then root?
If you're talking about the Over The Air (OTA) update that was announced, you should only upgrade with that if you don't want to root or customize anymore. For the moment, that OTA will take away root if you have it and you won't be able to get it back (for now).
If you're talking about upgrading to 2.2 using one of the ROMs posted here on XDA, then you need to root your phone in order to have the option to flash one of those onto your Aria.

Thanks that was very helpful! I'm going to root first them upgrade with one of the 2.2 ROMs here. I didn't know an OTA 2.2 update was out for the Aria already.
Well, it is and it isn't... it's available for non-branded Arias. AT&T hasn't released their version of the 2.2 update for the Aria, but when they do it will break your root access if you install it. At least temporarily. There's really no reason to use the official updates unless you need to return your Aria for some reason. Otherwise, you'll have more features using the custom ROMs here.
With the 2.2 upgrade for the Aria, were there any advancements on Adobe Flash?

No since this is an HTC Sense ROM, it still uses HTC Flash Lite just like the original ROM did. The Aria processor is not currently supported by Adobe Flash 10.x.
ok so I got a question. I have an ATT aria can I get the HTC 2.2 rom on my phone and then root my phone?
No, at the moment you can't. If you install the HTC OTA update you will lose root and be unable to get it back until one of the devs figures it out again. There are, however, plenty of Froyo ROMs to choose from, so you really don't need the HTC update to get 2.2.
Edit: Nevermind, looks like I spoke too soon. See this thread:

Currently, the two Froyo (Android 2.2) contenders for the Aria are CyanogenMod 6.1 and Liberated FR008.
Cyanogen offers a more unedited Android product with access to all sorts of settings and customization options. Liberated is more of a stock HTC Sense version of Android. Both ROMs are pretty much the creation of XDA member Attn1 who spends a ton of time developing for the Aria and here on the boards answerings questions.
The cool thing is that once you have rooted your Aria and installed Clockwork Mod Recovery, you can make a Nandroid back-up which will save your current setup along with all of your settings so that you can freely install these ROMs knowing that you can always safely return to your back-up if you don't like it. It's very... liberating!

Vibrant 4G Gingerbread update query

I accidentally posted this query in the standard Vibrant forum and they re-directed me here. So here's my initial query:
So I finally found out that the Galaxy Vibrant 4G (SGH-T959V) from T-Mobile now has an official update for Gingerbread. So since my mobile has been on Bionix Frost Custom ROM for long enough, I think I'll just update the phone. I'm aware that I'll loose the "root" feature, but my query is will I loose my network unlock? Also, will the contacts on the phone memory be wiped off too?
This is the first time I'm updating the phone. Since it was rooted before, should I bear some precaution before updating or is there a specific manner in which I should update?

I was planning on updating it via Kies. Kindly let me know if there is anything I need to keep in mind before proceeding with the update. I'm planning to update as per the method listed on T-Mobile website. Unfortunately, since I'm new to this forum, I can't seem to post it's direct link.

I don't recall losing anything when I updated with Kies. However, I would suggest making a backup of your data just in case. I sync my contacts with T-Mobile so even after I flash something that wipes the phone, the contacts sync back on their own.
I'm not sure if you can go from Bionix to KJ6 (2.3.6) using Kies Mini. Keis is picky about what ROM you're on with regard to updating. If it tells you that your phone's not registered, I'd suggest using ODIN to flash RaverX3X's ROM-ODIN-2.3.6-Gingerbread Offical. It's 100% based on the Kies Mini download but repackaged for ODIN for those having issues with Kies.
Thanks for the prompt reply Steve. Let's assume Kies DOES pick up my phone and confirms the Gingerbread update for it? Should I go ahead with it?
I don't see why not. You have nothing to lose by trying out the official kj6

I'm with Jager. Wifi signal strength is a little decreased, some people have had issues sending large text messages, but the phone is much more responsive.
Absolutely! My current ROM seems to be really buggy in places, thus depicting a rather poor picture of Android. So I was planning to try the stock ROM to see if it helped. So just to confirm, I won't loose my network unlock, correct?

I don't know about network unlock as I've not done that. However, this shouldn't mess with the /efs mount or it's contents, which is where I think the unlocks occur.
Someone else feel free to chime in on this one as I'm not sure.
You shouldn't lose your network unlock since that partition doesn't get touched by any updates.
I say you go for the upgrade but since you're already on a custom ROM, why not just use a custom KJ6 rom instead of the Kies version, you'll like it a lot more.
If you do wind up wanting a custom ROM, I recommend you click on the SGS4G Starter Pack link in my signature. Good guide.
Happy flashing!
That's what I thought but I wasn't sure. Thanks for clarifying FB!
Cheers folks! I'll first flash to the stock ROM and if I feel the need to enhance it, I'll definitely move onto one of the custom ROM's. Thank you for all your help, much appreciated.

[Q] Need help to begin Infuse GB update please!

Hi, I've had the Infuse for some time now and I've been patiently waiting for the next official 2.3 update after it got pulled. I assume this wont happen and my contract will probably be over by then. lol. Anyways I'm kind of new to this and would like some help on upgrading it to gingerbread myself. I dont know if it's possible but can I put gingerbread without rooting? If so, that would be great. If not, can someone post all the instructions needed to do this myself and how to revert back to stock if I want to.
Thank you, really appreciate it.
Check out the Infuse 4G super thread to get you started:

that should have everything you need to root, flash, return to stock, etc. With detailed instructions on how to do it all, and what u need to do if u "f" up!
I just updated my daughter's Infuse with Kies Mini to the official 2.3.6 Gingerbread version today, April 24, 2012. We were having trouble with the phone messing up, so my wife called AT&T. They told her to update the phone with Gingerbread. I hooked the phone up to the pc and updated the phone. Working fine.

Thinking about buying a used Atrix 2. Question!

What's the latest official firmware update on this device? Is it on ICS? Also, are there any 100% working Jelly Bean/CM10 roms?

Since you're in the US, you're not going to get the official ICS quite yet. Though, it will be very soon. Motorola says in Q3, which is rapidly coming to a close. Users in India have already gotten the OTA to ICS. So, not much longer for us here in the States.
Also, we have a CM10 ROM, but it's being fine tuned. There's still a few broken functions (look for the thread in the development section), but with the talents and hard work from our development team here for the A2, it'll get there, and be killer...
Sent from my fingers to your peepers
It would have been quicker to have a quick read of the forums, but anyway. Like Apex said, ICS OTA is on it's way to the US, India has it, and we have the leak and the official OTA, you can't go back to GB (yet?) if you flash the final OTA version of ICS, so we are all being urged NOT to flash the OTA yet and to only use the leak until further notice, there are a few roms but the bootloader is LOCKED. I can't tell you much about the device besides specs and things I've read as mine is coming in about 12 hours . But do yourself a favor and have a peek around the forums, specifically the development forums.

[Q] noob needs help getting the Atrix 2 usable.

i have been using my inspire 4g for few years now with the stock 2.3.3 w/o any problem until i accepted the update notification from at&t for 2.3.5 which i hate now. Long story short, it just made my exchange email crap and it became a burden. I do not know anything about rooting so bought a used Atrix 2 hoping to have ICS on it.
But the phone came withe the following:
Android Version: 2.3.5
System Version: 55.11.11.MB865.ATT.en.US
Build Number: 5.5.1-175_EDFFW1-11
As soon as I power on, the setup screen comes in where I enter my google details and it takes me to home screen and all is well. But when I click the 'Contacts' icon, it takes me to AT&T address book directly and starts rotating endlessly. Never give me an option to disable AT&T address book in contacts. It goes directly there and never completes even though I have data and wifi enabled. I tried at&t support as i don't have at&t phonebook registered - they asked me to upgrade to ICS.
Then I tried the OTA ICS upgrade and it always says the 'The device is upto date and no software upgrade is necessary'. It never upgrades the OS. At this point, at&t said they can't do anything and asked me to talk to Motorola. Motorola said this phone is running a version that is not supported so they can't help either. I have been googling and reading a lot of posts in this forum for help without much success.
I did check out the following and asked for help there:

Can someone please point me a thread or give me steps i need to follow to get this phone out of stock and working condition?
I am also working on getting my inspire out of stock OS but would love to get this phone fixed first.
Thanks in advance.

If you want to get the official ICS then here is the fxz for AT&T US phones (if you are somewhere else or using a different carrier, then you probably don't want this and need to supply more info.)
A couple of things to note. Once you upgrade to the official ICS there is NO going back to Gingerbread (unless someone hacked something together and I missed it), but it's best to assume you won't. Make backups before you do anything, better safe than sorry. If you don't like not having an option to revert to Gingerbread, then there are other options, but not the one mentioned.
If all is good and you want to flash the Official ICS, then you can visit the noob guide which will tell you how to flash a FXZ and what is needed.
Thank you. I really don't like the idea of not going back to Gingerbread but at this time my priority is to get this atrix 2 up and running. So am ok to get the official ics but the following says i should go to 2.3.6 in order to get to ics. Is that still true for the link you provided?

The link you posted is for ICS Leak#1, that will get you on ICS and as long as you're on Leak #1 only, you can revert to Gingerbread by using a specific FXZ from the link you posted. Your choice. The Official ICS that I posted has everything and will overwrite everything, so whether you flash from 2.3.5 or 2.3.6 it's going to upgrade the bootloader and system. Just remember, if you use the Offical ICS, then no more Gingerbread. Personally, I haven't wanted or needed Gingerbread since I got ICS.
Dear jsknair.
You can directly flash with OTA ICS update, no need to go to 2.3.4 then update to 2.3.6 the OTA ICS.
I very easy as other guy said study noob guide. After that within 10 min you will be on ICS and its really good you don't think to go back to GB.
