I was wondering if anyone had installed the stock android keyboard on their MT4G successfully?
I installed a custom HTC keyboard from gimpsta.com, but after selecting it as my keyboard in Settings, I still get the swype keyboard.

Long press on a text input field, e.g. browser field, message body field, email body field, etc, select "INPUT," then chose the keyboard of your liking. The Touch Input keyboard is HTC's, though, not default Android.
D'oh!
Thank you!! Works perfect.
The keyboard I am using is the HTC IME with a customized skin from gimpsta.com.
Works perfect. I like having my number keys all in a row, also mic input now an option and smiley emoticon button is there.

Thanks for this, I spent hours looking for this in settings. Do you know if its possible to download and install the "default" Android keyboard?

You can use smart keyboard pro which has the skin for the default android keyboard plus others like iphone, htc, and different colors for the default keyboard.

Working great for me on 2.1 Darch Legend V.5.
You need to install the .apk, then go into settings >> keyboard >> enable swiftkey
Next you need to go into swiftkey settings and download a language pack.
After all that, long press on a text entry box and select SwiftText.
So far it is pretty great at predicting what I am about to type in 2 letters or so. I love Swype..but I am willing to give this a try for awhile.

I have not had any problems using it on DamageRegaw ROM. I think I downloaded straight to phone from the email link I received and then just installed using ES file explorer.
I hope that helps. Word prediction on this keyboard is interesting.

Look in settings >> language and keyboard >> and then under the sub-heading "Text Settings" there is a selection box next to the name "Swift Key". This is the same menu that you get into the Swift Key settings at (the check box is not within the Swift Key settings).

Keyboard that tries to predict what you are going to type. I like it better than the stock keyboard, but I am much faster on Swype.
so it's an add on? and what's swype?

thats just it there is no box to enable it. nor is there one for the stock android one or the htc keyboard. they are all lined up but no enable. tried to reset after i installed and phone locked up so dont think it will work on dc v2 or maybe its just the damagetrev im running which is a faster version of dc v2
Eh, its better then stock, but once you try swype, its hard to type with anything else. If only swype had the voice thing like stock android, that would be awesome
OMFG!!! that looks awesome. so here's the question, if i want it how hard is it to try and then if i don't like it how hard to get rid of it?

I'm faster with Swype than a physical keyboard. I have installed it for two G1 owners recently after they got a hold of my phone.
No problems with darchlegendv5 I tested by just pushing space and if typed this " up to the business of Parity shall be liable for the use of the individual or entity to which it is a bit of a man they are trying to trace in connection with the word. I am a beautiful person. I am a beautiful person. I am a beautiful person. I am a beautiful person. I am a beautiful person." Exactly what I wanted to type. Crazy smart keyboard, but I think it's pretty nice thus far just a little slow.

i loved swype while i had it
this looks interesting too though...is it like normal but predicts?

Lol isn't this supposed to be about Swiftkey?
Hi,
When you press the SEARCH key, and typing in the text field ...
Does the keyboard give you text prediction?
And also when you search in the Market app ...
If not, is possible to enable text prediction on all input fields?
Thanks.
Negative on the text prediction for search. I get text prediction in the form of app suggestions on the market, but I don't know if that's quite what you're looking for.
As far as enabling it, I have no idea. I don't recall if any of my past Android devices did text prediction on search. :/

Take a look at SwiftKey. Text prediction is one of the reasons that my wife and I moved to it. We like this keyboard much better than stock, for us it was well worth the money.
This is common for several fields in several different apps. I work for Swype, so I've seen this myself, but since our keyboard doesn't typically work this way it's only been a curiosity for me. I believe it is considered a "feature" since you might want to explicitly type something else other than what prediction guesses. If you want to give Swype a try, the beta is currently open at: http://beta.swype.com/
Hi there,
Thanks for your info. I still find it odd, to not have this common behavior on all input fields.
Heck, the old HTC_IME hack on HTC Desire works pretty well with all the options to have prediction in all kind of input fields (thanks to the modder, jonasl). I still have this on my signature below.
But recently, I like the new Nexus S keyboard. It look slick, easy to type. But yeah, I missed some of the HTC_IME improvements, like SMILEY button!
As for SWYPE, granted, it is a very nice keyboard. But, I don't use ENGLISH that much I am using south-east asian language which is not supported
So, I am afraid that it does not offer much advantage.

The built in Gingerbread keyboard does have a smiley button. It's a "smart" keyboard, it knows what you're doing and shows you the appropriate keys/features/functions.
Go write a txt message, and you'll see a smiley key on the bottom right.
They should've taken out the period and extended the space bar. Its very frustrating when I'm trying to type fast. IPhone still had the best touch keyboard available

Thanks, I did not know that.
Obviously because I am using Nexus S keyboard on my HTC Desire! Probably it does not work fully as designed (I did not see that smiley button).
But, does that smiley button also appear when you type in EMAIL or TEXT AREA like replying to forum like this using the web browser?
Or when typing comments on Facebook app! That would be very nice.

I'm sorry if this has been asked already, but for the life of me I can't change the stock keyboard on my One X to a different on. I have downloaded a keyboard but can't find in the settings how to change it. This sense 4.0 is different then sense 3.6
Can someone give me detailed instructions on how to change the keyboard?
Where it always is: Settings ==> Language and Keyboard.
Typically the keyboard app you download will go over setting it up when the app is launched from your app drawer.

it took me a second to figure it out, too. start typing in any app. at the top will be a keyboard icon in the notification bar. drag down the drawer and touch "select input".
from there, you can change the keyboard.
Iam using swiftkey keyboard on my Note 1 N7000 and love the arrows feautre to move between words to correct or change words, this feature is not available for swiftkey keyboard tablet version,or the stock keybord, any other recommendations?
I admit this is a major failing for Swiftkey keyboard, which is otherwise a cracking keyboard.
Thumb keyboard has multiple layouts for tablets and also includes arrow keys.
will look at it, do you use it? how is it compared with swiftkey?
Edit
ooops, does not support my native language (Arabic):crying:

Just another tip (especially for those needing some greek letters for math symbols, i.e. α, β, γ, δ, ε, θ, λ, μ, π, ρ, φ, ψ, ω, Γ, Π, Σ, Φ, Ψ, Ω....)
You may ask yourself (as I did): "How can I insert all those symbols if there's no "sym" button?"
Simple answer: in the "Settings" - "Input languages" select "Eλληνικά [el]" (Greek) as an additional input language. After that, with a quick slide on the spacebar, you'll have all those Greek letters in the Greek keyboard layout.
Other examples of symbols that can be typed with the "Hacker's keyboard" are:
≤, ≥, ≈, √, ā, ∞ (x±y)²=x²+y²±2x•y
And, if you use the the Circle key another plenty of exotic symbols can be added, such as
♥ ⓚ a₁ ⅘2ⁿ...
(see this and this links)
It would be much simpler by using the traditional ALT+CharCode combination for the Ascii characters, but I didn't find a way to use that method (the Alt key seems not to combine with the character numeric code).

I'm in this same boat. So use to using a Note device with the keyboard shifted to the right that having it take up the entire screen looks crazy to me. I installed Swype but don't see it anywhere in the settings. Any suggestions how how to enable that? Thanks.
Update: Finally figured it out in Swype. Not intuitive at all, but to do it, it's Go to Settings, Themes, and then tap the gear at the top-right.
this way you can make your google keyboard as tall as you want https://goo.gl/g9mcEM
