[Q] Trying one-click root, keep getting 'cannot locate device' at command screen. - Epic 4G Android Development

ok, trying to install one-click root on my Epic, i have up-to-date drivers installed, USB debugging is checked, my computer gives me the option to mount and it reads my device. when I go to the run.bat command screen, I keep getting the message 'cannot locate device, unplug USB, re-plug and press enter.' when I do that I get 'aborting script, phone still not connected' message. can anyone point me in the right direction or tell me what I'm missing, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try to do a battery pull on the phone and try that. If that does not work, do a battery pull and reset your computer and see if that helps.

Not sure what OS you are running but the best thing is to do on Win XP.

Can you tell us the complete verbage of the error? I ran into a problem because I did not LITTERALLY UNZIP the rar file before running it. Kept saying the phone was not connected..but when I looked closer it was failing because the bat file was trying to run a piece of the program and for some reason it was failing on it. COMPLETELY AND LITTERALLY unzipped the rar to my computer and then ran it (making sure the phone was connected and in usb debug mode) and was rooted in a matter of minutes. hope this helped a little... good luck

Try plugging the Epic into a mobo usb port.

Your computer gives you an option to mount? If you have ADB debug enabled you should see something pop up in your device manager, but I'm not so sure you should get any kind of mounting pop-up.

Make sure you have all of the correct drivers installed for your OS, and try it again running each command seperately from the batch file. Then post here which command is coming back unsuccsessful so I can pinpoint the problem better.

I am having the same problem now for an hour or so. Tried everything I can think of , tried the all in one clockwork , used a different cable....i can hear my computer make that sound when I plug the phone in , and also when I unplug it. Just trying to get clockwork on here , ive read and read and read all the threads I can find. Got good drivers , windows xp. Rebooted laptop and phone at least 20 times ...dont know what else to try

Look in your device manager on your pc while your phone is connected with usb debugging and make sure there is no question mark next to Android ADB device. It needs to recognize this driver for it to connect.

HI
Hi i had that same issue an i went to the samsung official website becaue my phone can't connect to my pc i couldn't see my sd card pop up so the guy say my phone was defective so im thinking you have the same issue as me but samsung is fixing my phone now for free an free shipping i hope you still have warranty on your epic an they flashing a new rom an software on it for me they say to fix gps an wifi issues i had too

Got it to work, it was a driver issue apparently. Downloaded drivers again, completely removed old drivers. Reboot PC, make sure phone isnt connected yet. After reboot, install drivers, reboot again. I also had my phone turned off this whole time. When PC came back up , turn phone back on, connect using one of the main USB ports, not one in the front or anything. You should see windows detect and install the software. Then I ran the all in one clockwork , and here I am now fully rooted, syndicate rom , so much better than stock...hope you get it working! I definitely almost gave up a few times

USB not working after flashing Damage Control

So let me start by saying I have been researching these forums for the last 8 hours trying to following instructions on getting my phone to connect to my computer and with no luck, hoping someone out there can please help me step by step in correcting my problem.
1)I flashed DC's Rom, then flashed the most current radio, then flashed the most current Wimax.
2)I noticed that when I connect my phone to the computer, it says device is not recognizable. The phone charges but does cannot be seen by the computer as a disk drive (I'm trying to RUU to stock but the comp. will not see my phone and I've already tried running RUU but it also is having probs seeing the phone).
3)I've read Calculin's instructions in fixing the SD Card and USB as close as possible but also no luck. I've downloaded Android-SDK Tools and ran CMD with the Instructions saying type in "fastboot oem boot", from there, thats where I get stuck, it just says "waiting on device". Not sure where I go from there, I'm in Reboot mode where it has Fastboot on my evo screen.
Any help would be much appreciated, I'm just so frustrated and I'm trying to get back to square one.
Unplug your phone and restart it, then plug it back in. I had to do this 3 times before it started working again. Other than that, you might just need to download the new drivers.
And you posted in the wrong section.
Sorry about posting in the wrong section, what drivers should I install, are you talking about the new HTC Sync Files or something else? Can you point in the direction to get these files?
okay, I think I'm getting close, I have a box thats popping up now thats trying to located the Device Driver the phone. It says "Failed" next to the line "MY HTC" Where can I download the necessary drivers for this phone?

You should be able to get the proper drivers from either Sprint or HTC's web site. There are links on both sites. Also, when you install / reinstall the sync drivers make sure anti-virus is disabled. If the situation continues and you've tried everything else other folks suggested look at program permissions in your anti-virus program. I was having something similar and CA anti-virus was not letting the program start-up. I had to toggle it to "allow".
Good Luck.

[Q] Flashed CM, problem updating driver?

Hi all
I have successfully flashed Cyanogen nightly on my phone. However, when I connect it to my PC, it doesn't give me an option to transfer files to and from my phone to my computer. All I see is the USB debugging on my notification bar. I have tried this advice from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13636060&postcount=1465
I have also installed the drivers from LG. When I use the support tool to update it, it says that they cannot find a connection between the phone and my computer. Would that possibly be an issue?
Thanks!
EDIT UPDATE: When I follow the instruction from the link above, I get an error saying "Windows found driver for your device but encountered an error while trying to install it.
LGE Android Composite USB Device
This device cannot start.(Code 10)
I hope I can get some help! Thanks again!
I'm gonna be home in a minute if you want me to upload the LG driver exe I used and know works I can.

Yeah, that would be great. Let me know when you can.
http://www.multiupload.com/W2Z7Z5S5GX
I really hope it works for you *fingers crossed*
Unfortunately that didn't work either.
What's weird is that when I connect my phone to my computer, that icon that lets you know that the USB is connected doesn't show up at all. The icon where you can select to copy files to/from your computer.
I've tried many things but haven't fixed this problem yet.
I really hope someone else can help sorry
Yeah, thanks for your help.
Have you tried restarting both the phone and the pc?
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Yes I sure have. Any other suggestions?
When I try to update the LG drivers via the software support tool it gets stuck on checking the connection with the phone and tells me to unplug the battery, restart the phone, and try again. When I do that, I get the same problem.
I'm still working on this same issue. Today I used the ROM for recovery linked below.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1248644
It worked and I was able to transfer files to my internal SD with the stock ROM. I then flashed CM7 once again but had the same problem. I then used the CM Nexus GB by Faux123 and once again had the same problem. When I plug in my USB, debugging icon shows up but the USB transfer doesn't show at all.
I find it weird that it worked with the stock ROM but not with either of CM7 or CM Nexus.
Any suggestions would be helpful.

[Q] Root Problems

I am coming from the Galaxy S Vibrant and so far I am not impressed by the whole rooting process for the Skyrocket. I have tried on 3 different windows computers and every time it says it is unable to recognize device. I installed the drivers but I don't believe they were installed correctly. When I click root in super one click, the application stops responding.
I made sure to select debugging and when I connect the phone to the computer nothing prompts me on the phone. Is there something I am missing in order to get the Skyrocket recognized by Windows?

You need to be patient. the program stopped responding for nearly 5 minutes for me before it started going again and my PC is lightning fast.
Try installing Samsung kies. Should give you all the drivers you need.
If your computer doesn't recognize the phone at all then you most likely dont have the drivers installed correctly or a USB hub driver issue in which case no USB devices would work. Like I said, try installing kies. Once you can get the PC to recognize the phone as a storage device, you should be good to run the root program.

i had somewhat the same problem , I rooted my old vibrant first incase i screwed something up , no big loss , it went smooth as butter , then I hooked the SR up and it took forever , 3 try I unplugged alot of my other usb devices , restarted the pc and tried , it hung for a few minutes and I left it alone , it eventually worked the last time. I also have a pretty solid pc , running win7 64bit , unplugging alot of my usb devices seemed to be the thing that really helped.
hope that helps ya

rooting this device is easier then posting that on the forum =)
1) If you are still 2.3.5 (and didn't do the OTA upgrade) -> use doomlord's script (DooMLoRD_v3_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su) or newer if there is one:
-if you did do the OTA upgrade - search the forum for another way to root.
2) install KIES (if its installed, continue to 3)
3) extract the DooMLoRD_v3_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su.zip to anywhere (maybe c:\doom )
4) open a command prompt (run as administrator if your not running windows XP)
5) goto c:\doom\files\
6) type "adb devices"
- if it finds your device - just run the script , it will root your phone
- if it does NOT find your device, troubleshot kies (uninstall it, reboot, reinstall, disable anti virus/firewall, etc etc) because if it can't find the device then the problem is someplace on your computer.
good luck!

Firmware upgrade encountered an issue

Ok so i searched and searched and searched but found similar issues but not my issue. I was flashing a rom and it went into a boot loop. I went to get out of it and it wouldnt let me so i used a 1 touch odin download. When i plugged it in my computer recognized the phone i clicked start and it failed because my phone stopped being recognized by my computer. (i can get into download mode with no issue.) Now when i plug it in it just says usb device not recognized. I have uninstalled reinstalled drivers several times. tried multiple cables multiple computers. It also says gadget serial in the device name when its trying to auto find the driver... strange. I just need my phone back together lol. I was working on this til 3 am last night and had to run to walmart to get a cheap alarm clock to wake me up for work this morning at 6 any help is appreciated

To fix your issue, using my odin 1 click (gremlin remover), start the 1-click, then boot into dl mode. If device still isn't recognized, go into device manager right click on the device and update drivers manually. Reboot phone into dl mode and all should be well.
Also once you reinstall drivers or update them, reboot your computer. That always helps the computer recognize my phone when I have this issue. Good luck.

brighter minds than min here, but "one-click" and "odin" are different routes to the same end, aren't they? But if you start with heimdall and that fails, you will likely get the drivers issue when you try odin. I suggest opening device manager on your Win machine and removing all drivers related to the phone as storage device or whatever. Then reboot your machine. When you get to your desktop, open odin (my preferred tool), then with your phone powered down, hold vol-up+vol-down together and connect the phone to your usb cable. Win should find the drivers and load them, and odin should see your phone.
Gonna steal something from lumin30 here.
* * If you have used your phone on every USB Port and/or have no idea where all you have plugged your phone into or used ODIN or Heimdall with - Download [usbdeview-x32.zip] for 32-bit operating systems or [usbdeview-x64.zip] for 64-bit operating systems. Uninstall anything you see that has Samsung and Android related.

[Solved] [Q] Bricked Help!

I am afraid I have made a very big n00b mistake.
Let me just say to prior to this goof up, I was well informed of the rooted SG4G world and had successfully flashed CWM and was running on various custom kernels and tweaks. I am currently abroad and had to revert back to my unlocked SG4G as my phone abroad, so my knowledge of the rooting world became somewhat diminished. Now here lies the problem. Earlier this morning, my phone had a random reboot. I decided to try and flash another kernel that I had saved on my phone via SGS Kerenel flasher(which I have used successfully used before). However, I think i may have reverted to the stock kernel that did not run well with all the tweaks I had previously installed. Now when I boot up, I get stuck on the SG4G screen (only for T-Mobile screen). I rebooted into recovery mode but it appears as if I have lost CWM, therefore I can not do a nandroid back up.
My question is: How can I restore my phone and make a nandroid backup without CWM?
I already took matters into my own hands and tried flashing CWM via Haeimdall through the kernel that is suggested in "The Definitive Noobs guide to Flashing and or fixing the SG4G" but Heimdall does not seem to recognize my device. It does say "Device detected" when I enter download mode but it is not giving me the option to click "Start."
Help will be much appreciated since I am relying on my phone while I am abroad and need to fix this ASAP.
Much appreciated and again,
Sorry for the n00b mistake
Take note of the 'kernel' in SGS Kernel Flasher. Not ROM flasher.
Follow the guide in the second link of my signature.
Thank you for the prompt response lumin,
I have followed your guide to the bone but I am unfortunately stuck on a certain step. When I reboot my phone into "Download mode" and connect the USB cable, nothing happens. The command prompt just says "Ready for Flash" and does not proceed to the "Installing Drivers" step.
Any thoughts on this?
I hope this does not mean my phone has become a paperweight and that my computer no longer recognizes the phone via USB .
Edit: According to Heimdall the Device status says "Connected" but according to the the command prompt it says "Device not connected" and "Ready for Flash"
Also, when I first plug in my phone, Windows 7 tells me the "USB device is not recognized"
Hope this doesn't mean we've hit a dead end...
Did you read the notes about removing other drivers that may have been installed on your computer for your phone?

Yes I did. I installed usbdeview before I began the process and deleted anything Android/Samsung related.
Windows doesn't seem to recognize my phone but Heimdall does say the "Device Status" is connected.
Any other thoughts?
When I first connect to my pc (holding buttons to get in download mode, gb bootloaders) I get same msg. But, once I press the volume button and enter download (Andy & shovel screen), the computer(Odin) sees it and that not recognized pop up goes away. Are you sure you got a proper/good cable?

If Heimdall see's it, it's soft bricked and fixable by flashing the right stuff. Still getting into download mode, it can be fixed.

That is great news.
But how exactly do I flash "the right stuff?"
I noticed that when I plugged my SG4G to attempt the "Installing Drivers" step via CMD, my laptop installed the drivers automatically and said "the device is ready to use." Does this constitute as "Installed Drivers" step completed and I can proceed to flashing KJ6 Heimdall via one click?
Thanks,

I am using a data cable that I believe is from an old "V-cast" phone. I am not using a Samsung Galaxy USB cable but I have not had a problem with transferring files to and from my phone from my laptop so I assume it is not the cable... unless I am mistaken?
Use your cable that came with the phone. Just because the cable will transfer files doesnt mean it will work with heimdall.
You keep mentioning installing drivers through cmd line. While it does show the cmd line in the background - Zadig should open giving you a GUI to install/replace the drivers.
Is Zadig opening when you run the One-Click? Also, do you still have Samsung drivers installed on your computer? Go to My Computer > Uninstall Programs and look.

Hello lumin and thank you again for your prompt responses,
I checked again to see if there were any drivers installed and you were in fact correct. The KIES program slipped by my findings. I uninstalled it and again uninstalled anything Samsung/Android related via usbdeview.
I thought this might do the trick but Zadig is not popping up when I plug my USB cable in my "Download ready" Samsung. The CMD does read "Ready for flash" and Heimdall says its connected. Should I just go ahead and run Heimdall? WIll Zadig pop up after I click the "flash" button. If I am not mistaken, your tutorial says it should automatically pop up, which in my case, it is not.
Also, eollie did mention I need a the Samsung Galaxy S USB cable that came with my phone. I am not currently using that. Could the cable be the culprit to my issue?
I really appreciate everybody's help to my problem.
Thank you all,
Eurik
If it says connected in Heimdall and flash is enabled - then yes - flash. It does not have to be a Samsung cable. The cable will either work or not work. And it sounds like yours is working.

No Samsung USB Composite device though.....
