Comprehensive Modem Listing and Download Links? - Captivate General

Is there such a site out there, so people can swap modem files and the like to suit their needs?
Should we compile them here?

I am using a captivate on simple mobile and it only gets edge network so I believe that if there was more lists of modems and their frequency availability that there might be a chance of me and others to get 3g speeds. so I say yes to a list here.

Curious what your objective is? I have many modem files I can pass along but just providing them without context is inviting people to mess up their phone, thus having to flash back to stock.
Swyped.....you may have to interpret

okay well i am still trying to test different ways that may be possible for me to get 3g on my captivate with a t-mobile sister network called simplemobile sim card. i heard its impossible but thats what they say about everything til someone finally does it.

Tell me which you have tried and I will upload the others I have this evening.
Swyped.....you may have to interpret

well so far i have only tried different kernels. i dont know if they include any modem settings in them but havent found one yet. i do believe that each modem has to match the kernel...??? am i right? well i am on the i9000 kernel now and no luck but i am downloading damn near everything i can get my hands on for a midnight experimentation event.

No the kernel does not change the modem unless someone has packaged them together. And you have some leeway in mixing modems, kernels, and roms. If you are on an I9000 now, using a captivate modem will likely cause reboot issues. Using an eclair modem with froyo usually results in battery drain problems but not always.
Swyped.....you may have to interpret

Btw, what band are you usually connecting to, 1900 or 850 gsm or wcdma? Use dialer and enter*#0011# to get that info

Pretty sure that ain't a modem problem... If its an at&t phone, check your apn settings AND enable data roaming... You'll get 3g

Check what the above post recommends but if your getting data then your apn should be good and not sure what to tell you but here are a bunch of modems to play with
Modems
More Modems

I'm sure there is some sort of map on the 'net somewhere where you can see what coverage you get, then choose a modem compatible with your current build to get that frequency.

The modems all support both bands but there are a couple tricks to getting 850 on i9000 modems

How do you flash modems?
Noob question, how do you flash just the modem. I want to try the jpp modem and I have the .bin file. What to do next? Thanks.

You have to flash using odin put the modem bin in the phone slot

All these modems with all these funky names?!

First off, sorry if this is in the wrong part of the fourm..... anyways, ya, what's up with all these names for modems? What are the differences? There's like 15 different modems that I saw in the development section. Please explain to me what's so.special about each of them.
they are named after the ROM from which they come
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835272
try one and post the results. they are mostly i9000 and t959 modems from cariers that use the same bands as att. stay away from the t-mobile modems and i9000 modems that dont have the 850 band by default, we were having succsess with the bell jk3/jk4 modems and then the telus seems to give me better gps. now we have a good number of them from many providers, and noone can know what's the best.
i recomend the telus jl3 modem. i get an ocasional warning the the sim was removed, its a bug related to the modem but overall it seems to be the best that i tried, the warning does not affect service in the least. another may be as good without the bug but there are too many to test.

[Q] Unlocked Infuse 4G won't allow me to manually select network

So I'm in Bangkok this week, and I have my unlocked stock rooted Infuse 4G with me and my Tru Mobile Roaming SIM won't connect to the right network because the stock rom points to the default AT&T roaming partners, and when I try to manually select a network the manual selection is greyed out.
I read somewhere on here that going into app SamServMode and selecting debug and Debug Screen and Phone Control and Network Control then select Manual it doesn't allow for selection.
The issue is the phone is preferring a different network than my SIM has a roaming agreement with, so I need to be able to manually select. Anyone know of a solution without changing roms?
Thanks!
Anyone? I bought a local DTAC sim and it works fine since DTAC is the official AT&T roaming partner the ROM allows hooking on to it, but still can't use non-DTAC sims as the rom doesn't allow manual network selection
Bump.
Can anyone help her?

So I'm heading home to the states in 24 hours... but I do think this is an interesting topic hopefully someone can assist with. Seems that even when unlocked, a carrrier cannot be manually selected, leaving roaming limited to the carriers att allows even when using another carriers global sim. Seems a limitation of stock rom but is the first time I've seen this on a phone.
Bella i've got the solution for you...
Flash the rogers modem..
The att modems have this feature lockedout, so any changes revert back.... I can confirm that the rogers modem gives full access to changing the network and it does stick....
Do so by pressing *#2263# with rogers modem.... You can then manually select the network to lock onto.

Do I need to install modded 3E recovery first, or just flash it from a stock rooted state in CWM?
I've not flashed a new radio before on this phone, so a step by step would be much appreciated.

Well I keep finding things that are limiting my experience with this phone. It's definitely been negative overall in comparison to my old Inspire 4g, which was so open, with many ROMs available, and none of the locked down attributes of this Infuse 4G.
So is it really the radio, or is it the ROM? And what are the upsides\downsides to flashing the Rogers ROM? I definitely need to be able to manually select my network, so if's become a non-issue, just need to know what the best way to accomplish it.
Advice\suggestions?
The limitations are built into the modem package.... Not the rom.
Right now the rogers modem performance (and when we say modem, we mean the modem software that tells the radio how to communicate with the network) is on par with the newest att modem with the only difference I can see it the being able to manually select any network.
Bella as for you, unless you rather use odin, to flash with clockworkmod you indeed need the modded 3e recovery and the I9000 version of cwm on your phone...

I installed mod'd 3e Recovery just fine, then flashed the radio posted above in this thread. Seems to have flashed fine, however the manual network selection is STILL greyed out. Any ideas as to why? Seems like another member who said the ROM (Stock AT&T Rooted) is responsible. Are you sure this isn't the case? Any idea as to why I can't manually select a network now?
Thanks!
Now with the Rogers Modem installed, when I go into Network Selection it still is greyed out and says "Default Setup" .. put in a foreign SIM that has both AT&T and T-Mobile USA provisioning allowed, and it doesn't let me select which to use.
:-(
Guess this doesn't resolve the issue. Anyone else have solution as to what I can do to get that Network Selection box available to use? This is the first phone I have ever owned that has disallowed access when I put in a foreign sim. It's getting really annoying dealing with Samsung's inadequacies between flashing and operational limitations, ugh. I would go back to HTC in a heartbeat if the Inspire 4G got better battery life. :-(

I'm just baffled. How is there not a solution that'll allow me to select the network I attach to? I'm not even an AT&T customer. I paid full price for my handset, it's fully unlocked, doesn't even have the AT&T radio anymore, yet I can't select the carrier in the carrier selection menu? I weep for the future of this country's wireless industry if the ATT\T-MO merger goes through.

All right I've went through all the posts regarding this and none of the options seem to work. I have terrible 3G/4G signal where I live. How can I set the network!!??!! Tried the apps tried the *#*# stuff (all I get with that is "RAT selection restricted!" WTF is RAT?) I can't even make a phone call or send a simple text with the one bar of 3G/4G I get. I know most are probably against the merger but I will hopefully benefit from it cuz there is a T-Mo tower down the street from me. Anyhow please help. I'm rooted, stock AT&T, 2.2.1

It's only possible with Rogers-based ROMs (e.g. Infused v2.x)
It's not possible with the stock AT&T ROM or any derivatives, and causes all sorts of problems with CM7.
Hopefully AT&T's Gingerbread update will fix this.

Infused v2 is Rogers-based.
Entropy, I was able to force 2G with Infused 1.5.3 when I had it paired with the Rogers modem. I used the star code *#2263# and that allowed me to select a GSM only band.
Also, on current infused.v2 builds, I cannot force 2G as they're not using Rogers modem and I don't feel like flashing another modem and bricking it on these test builds.

T-mobile 4g Radio

OKAY so I decided to update this thread:
There are two versions of the One X. One with aws bands and one without. I have a device without AWS (I am about 80 % sure). There are reports of people getting 4g on AWS with the Rogers Version as of now, and more testers need to check it out as it could still be possible on ATT.
This flash here theoretically could enable the One X radio to lach onto AWS (The radios here are for the One S Ville.)
http://ville.giev.de/?page_id=42
I have flashed all three, and although I did not get 4g, I got faster ping and a near immediate connection onto T-mobile. To all the people saying this will "brick" the phone, it does not and you have nothing to worry. But as always make sure to do a backup. The radio hacks for the Skyrocket/Note were also based on flashing the Galaxy S2 radio directly on top. This should work the same.
I'm interested in this as well. What does is involved and the risk? I don't have warranty on my phone, so I'm a little bit leery in being first.

if your rooted ull should be fine just make a back up of ur current set up. this is just a clockwork flash, it may not even flash, but if it does then there's a high chance of 4g.
i've done radio hacks before for the droid 3/skyrocket/note all from a similar concept. ex. flashing the t-mobile galaxy s2 radio on the note, to enable 4g.
if anyone could provide me with a better solution for an unlock i am sure i can get this to work. seems that the htc unlocker server is down right now
it's the same thing as flashing different radios via clockwork posted in the One X android dev forum
I'll give it a try, hopefully it won't mess anything up. So I just flash the radio in recovery. If no good, I just flash the correct radio again?
There is a one click no HTC Dev bootloader unlock in the Dev forum.

I'm still on Edge, but I'm in a crappy cell area, so still not certain if radio or my area. I might give the:

0.16.31501S.02_10.18.31501S.08L
Radio a try too.
good to hear no negative results got my phone unlocked so i will be testing tonight. also do u guys have the newer sims or older ones?
I have an older sim I believe. It is one that came from an activation kit I bought off ebay. I tried the T-Mobile radio and same results, still on Edge, but still could be my location.

It's not just the SOC that determines hardware compatibility. There are various radio amplifiers and filters which are tuned to the specific frequencies that the phone is likely to encounter. If a phone is going to be sold in multiple markets, sometimes the hardware filters are set up for all frequencies and some are disabled via software, but often times this is not the case.
It's not impossible that a radio reflash can make it work, though highly improbable.

Interested in this. There might be better luck flashing the tmo radio since I don't think any European operators use AWS bands, correct me if I'm wrong.

I am using my micro sim that came with the one s and i am getting edge (asume its the latest from tmobbile 4g mucro sim. I am on 1.85 rooted but i did not unlock. though i am sure we can flash through CWM. any ways i am sure there is a way out to get 3g or 4g on the one x on tmobile did not find the way yet.
flashed both of the t-mobile modems no luck for me either, although my ping is significantly higher and connects to t-mobile a LOT quicker.
does anyone know how to edit the LTE settings. it is odd but for most ATT LTE phones they have the 1700mhz frequency i think it would be a matter of just defaulting that....
the radios also show up in my baseband so i have successful flashes
EDIT: one more thing, before i was not able to use data at all considering i had the newer t-mobile sims but now data works but on edge speed.

it's just a file in your system. it could potentially brick your phone but you can always get into recovery and restore. which is why i stated you should create a back up of your device before trying it out.
however, i was fairly certain it wouldn't do that because the internals of the One S/One X are nearly identical, they both share the same processor and most likely similar (if not same, radios).
either way, the the radios work, getting me higher ping, and working data without having to switch out my sim for an older one, hope there is a way to activate the 1700 band !

Likely the software has been changed to support T-Mobile, but the hardware (filters, amplifiers, etc) are non-existent, so you'll never get actual 1700 MHz AWS support.
Of course, this is just a 50,000 foot view perspective without actually trying it myself.

you might be right about this one but there are certain One X/XL's that do have the 1700 band found out through some searching and trying to figure out the reason behind it.
If that's correct.... the people with the 1700 band would have 4g when they flash this radio! also use *#*#4636#*#* to change network type to lte/gsm
--- for other phones though like the Skyrocket/Note they were directly compatible with T-mobile radios.
Okay, I flashed the Tmo One S radio and did not receive a brick. What I did receive is a not-so-good connection that will switch between HSPA+ and 3G quite often.

Don't you need a wind sim to connect im pretty sure the Canadian version will work on aws
Confirmed on my end that even with the T-Mobile radio, I'm not getting HSPA+. Even when I drove by the Moscone center where 1900Mhz was refarmed during Apple's WWDC (maybe it was just that day?). I was hoping this would be like the Note and Rocket where I can flash different radios.
Any other new phone capable of this? The S III? If not, I may have to either wait for 1900MHz refarm or switch to Straight Talk.

Just popped in an old WIND sim that I used to test AWS connectivity at first. Saw WIND Away with the standard radio, and after flashing the Tmo radio I see WIND Away and AT&T (AT+COPS=? shows Rogers, ATT, Telus, Bell).
I live by the lake, that would explain why ATT shows up.

[Q] Anything to help on 3G

Hey,
Two SGS3 phones in the household. One's rooted with CleanROM and one's unrooted stock. Our phones doesn't go to 3G often. But when they do, they're pretty much useless. Browsing is extremely slow. The other day I tried to send a text with a picture, and it took over five minutes to send. Tried speedtest.net, and got sub dialup download speeds and almost no upload at all. I don't think that the 3G in this area is bad. I have friends with 3G phones that browse right along just fine.
Is there something that makes these phones operate so poorly in 3G? Is there anything that can be done?
Since you're rooted on one I imagine you can root the one having problems, I'd say root and flash a new modem that might solve your problems

Try different modems. Assuming that doesn't work, come back here and report which ones you tried with what result.
Also, I rarely get stuck under 3G, but when I do, going under More settings/mobile networks/network mode, change to GSM then back to Global. That pops me back onto 4G every time without fail.

Are you in an area with 3g only, if so when I'm in such an area I use android tuner free or pro: then goto battery manager, on status tab bottom of page see tests, then device info, this brings up phone info page. scroll down and change to cdma auto prl. Then when back in 4g area change in regular settings to normal. Works great for me. If not it tries to find 4g constantly and with weak signal switches back and forth or stays on 3g with slow speeds.
Also like stated earlier try different modems and rpms, flash in pairs has worked best for me. And newest isn't always the best. I'm in Pensacola and newest is slower than mb1 or may is faster and better signal than md3.But each device is different. Good luck

Thanks. I'm on VRBLK1 right now, because I was told that it was the best one. But I doubt that my RPM matches. I read somewhere around here that RPM doesn't really matter. Wife's phone is on the update prior to this one that just came out, unrooted. So she's using whatever radio/rpm came with that.
I'm in a 4G area, and it's pretty rare that I end up on 3G. There are a couple of spotty areas close by that I always switch over. When I do, 1X is actually faster.
Can someone please point me to the location of the various radios that I can try. At least I can flash the RPM that goes with the one that I'm using. See if that makes a difference. I once had a bunch of them on my memory card, but that card died a while ago, and I lost everything.
Thanks!
There are a few things that you need to know before using the latest aio (all in one) radio files.
If you are running a 4.2 camera you shouldn't have any trouble, but the kernel you use can and will make a difference. If you flash the latest aio and camera doesn't work don't freak out, there are three options that I know of.
1 flash back to previous aio,
2 there is an aio with latest modem, rpm, and older tz (the tz is what messes up camera)
3 flash kernel that works with latest update
There is a thread on here about modems and it should be under android development thread probably just below pinned threads.

I was wondering if my method getting you back onto 4g by switching to GSM then back to global worked for you? Like I said it never failed me.
