Non activated Hero - Hero CDMA Android Development

Does the Hero have to be activated on your account to wipe and flash? Maybe a dumb question, but I haven't messed with my Hero in a couple of weeks since I got the EVO. Now, I can't wipe anything, just says wipe aborted.

No. I had a spare hero for several months which I rooted, and flashed several roms without it ever being activated.

Damn, any other ideas why I can't wipe or flash anymore? Anyone?

Ok, switched from Darchstar recovery to AmonRA, still no dice. Looking at an RUU and re root here? Can't NAND backup, or wipe ANYTHING. It is an different SD card than the one that was in it, that one went to my EVO and was formated.

AFAIK, Darchstar's Recovery is the same as AmonRA, just modified a bit. Try Clockwork Mod.

help with C7 RC1 installtion

So i have tried for the past few days to get RC1 working on my phone, i cannot get it to work for the life of me, im currently running build 78 on my phone, anytime i flash the new rom, it wont go past the android guy riding the skateboard, and will get stuck at bootloop on the animation, i have tried doing a fresh install, any suggestions?
Build 78? I need 10char
mmmk it says the mod version is "CYANOGENMOD-7-01162011-NIGHTLY-LIBERTY"
Build 78 doesn't even exist, lol.
You've Nandroid-ed your previous install right? Just in case.
Maybe you should try build 43, as if you use RC1, you will have the lockscreen dialer issue.
Try re-downloading the ROM's zip file. You may have got a bad one. (I realize there are MD5 tools out there, but I could never get one to work right.)
Are you are booting into clockworkmod recovery by holding down the down volume button when turning on the phone and selecting recovery? And not when you have the USB plugged in? The usb way does not work right.
Make sure you have factory wiped, wiped cache, and wiped dalvik before installing the zip. (You can use the trackball to navigate recovery fyi)
Don't use a old google apps zip either.

have you tried formatting system seperately after wiping data? as it instructs from the first release of the nightlies? (if i remember right, hah) wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache , then partitions>format system, then flash the zip ?
That hasn't been required for awhile, I believe.

Yes, i have nanaroid's backed up, as well downloaded new zip files of everything, at first i assumed it was due to wireless MAYBE that packet was dropped, downloaded it on hard wire just to be safe, fresh zip files, for everything same thing, and i dont boot while plugged into USB
Yes i have tried formatting the system.
Can you flash and boot other roms successfully? CM6 or FR008?

have you ever used Android Commander? i use it for DDMS to try to figure out whats going on sometimes with my phone if its acting weird. im sure itll show up with the error before it loops.
yes, i can flash to any of those w/out any issues, even up to Nightly. of CM7.
While this doesn't fix your issue, could you try a night-

Do you have your phone plugged into the outlet/PC while running Clockwork? Because if you do, well, unplug it and reflash.

[Q] HELP: Mail and Gmail force quitting after ROM change

I followed the Inspired ace hack kit, all went well. I chose to flash the att-inspire-rooted-signed.zip ROM. My GPS was not working, so I put the inspired-dhd-afr003-signed.zip ROM on my sd card, flashed it, and now mail and gmail force quite. But my GPS works! haha. Well, need the mail, haven't tried going back to the first ROM yet. Any ideas on how to fix this, or why it happened in the first place?
Thanks,
Scott
UPDATE: Went back to the att-inspire-rooted-signed ROM and it mail/gmail works fine. Gussing no GPS though.
I would like the GPS to be functional, any ideas?
Thanks,
Scott
I had no issues with gps not working, sorry.

The other rom will work but, you need to do a data factory rest, wipe card partition, and wipe the dalvik cache before flashing.

I haven't flashed it myself, but everyone's saying GTG's rooted stock ROM has everything working perfectly. You flash it through HBoot and it does a data factory reset - you may still want to wipe card partition and wipe the dalvik cache first
Noob here so I don't know all the terms. Any links to the steps I need to take prior to flashing a new Rom? I know how to use hboot.

If you download the zip in the thread I linked to and put it on your SD card, then start HBoot, it will automatically do a factory data wipe and install the ROM. There are instructions in that thread.
I don't know if this also wipes card partition and dalvik cache, but to do this you boot into cwm recovery (if you have clockwork mod installed you just select recovery from the HBoot menu) and deleting card partition is an option in here, i think dalvik cache is in Advanced
Ok, thanks for the help. I do have the Clockwork mod. So I go to hboot like I am going to load the new ROM, but first delete the partition and clear the dalvik cache correct? Then I can load the new ROM?
I didn't do this when I flashed the second ROM. What data will I lose when I delete the partition and clear the dalvik? When I just flashed the ROM I didn't lose anything. The phone is new, so not much on it, but I didn't lose any of my mail or mail settings, and didn't loose my contacts. I can get both back, just a pain to set it all up again.
Thanks so much for the help.

miui and CM7 keeps cycling the inital loading

hi all,
Ok, I'm new to this stuff.
1. used the simple root and it worked great.
2. I then flashed CM7 and it worked great except market was not on it.
3. I downloaded and flashed gapps-hdpi-20101114-signed.zip by mistake, not realizing I had to use another gapps.
4. After I flashed it, the cm7 and android setup screens kept cycling between each other.
5. I restored to clockworkmod (sp) and then deleted the gapps and tried to then flash cm7. It didn't cycle between cm7 and android setup, but the cm7 screens kept cycling and never got past that.
6. I thought perhaps it was just cm7 now, so I tried miui and it's doing the same thing. It's cycling between the gingerbread man and MIUI with the status bar and won't do anything else.
Very frustrated. what have I done and how do I fix it?
Thanks folks,
Brett
I believe that those ROMs both require ENG S-OFF. Open simple root on your computer, click Fixes, then apply the fix there. Also, did you make sure you cleared your Dalvik cache before flashing? Always do a factory reset AND clear dalvik cache when changing ROMs.

Hi. Thanks.
I use rom manager to boot to recovery. Then I install zip from sd card. I go through the process until it says reboot. It's when I reboot that I get stuck in the bootloop. It just cycles from the CM7 circular arrow to blank and then to the arrow thing again. MIUI does the same between the gingerbread guy and the status bar and back.
I then take the battery out, take out the sdcard, down volume & power, reinsert sdcard and do a restore so I can use my phone again in clockworkmod 3.0.0.6.
thanks,
brett
sounds like your forgetting to do a full wipe/factory reset, wipe cache, and wipe dalvik..

actually, I did that.
it's weird. I restored a few times, did the above you suggested, and still in a loop. The first time I installed CM7 it was great, then the gapps thing seems to have screwed it up.

Probably a silly question but you're doing full reinstalls, right? Not using a nandroid backup? I can't think of any reason that you should be boot looping permanently from flashing the gapps if you're going into clockwork, doing a factory reset, wiping the cache, then wiping the Dalvik cache, then flashing the ROM.

hmm. I'm a little new to this, but I'm using the backup/restore option in recovery mode and am then flashing one of the backups. Could that be the problem?
If it is, how do I do a full reinstall?

That's your problem right there. If you make a backup of a busted ROM, its still going to be busted when you restore it.
Do the factory reset, then clear the cache again just to make sure, go to advanced and clear Dalvik, then go to the main menu and use the choose install zip from sdcard option, then choose "choose zip from sdcard", find the ROM zip file and select it, then say yes to the flash and reboot when its done. If you are flashing CM7, make sure that you flash the correct gapps package after you flash the ROM or the ROM won't be very useful.

I'll give it a shot and then get back to you.
I do believe, however, that the restore I'm doing is the backup I did right before I did the original cm7 flash. I'll try.
thanks!
If you toggle wifi on after the first boot it goes into a bootloop. This is a know bug not a hunch.

[Q] Rom stays on Mt4G loader After installing a Custom Rom WHY?

AFter installing a custom rom Its Stays on T Mobile MT4GS screen
I am rooted And S-off
What Do I do 2 get pass this screen? HELP
I personally have not installed any custom ROMs on my MyTouch 4G Slide yet, but coming off the G1 after two and a half years, I'd say just wipe everything (cache, data, etc) then reflash the ROM, assuming you can still get into recovery.

Well, it'll probably be your best bet to revert to the original ROM. If you can still boot into recovery or fastboot, then you're still fine.

Nexus S 4G Root issues?

I've been playing around with a Nexus S 4G that I have lying around and never used, and I've ran into a few problems, but you've all been helpful. I rooted all my old EVO 4G's without any problem, but the other day I rooted my NS4G using a one click/simple root and downloaded ClockWorkMod etc. But now for some reason It seems like I've almost lost my root? Is that possible? I still have the little unlocked symbol when booting up.
I've searched this forum and Google and haven't found anything, which could possibly be because I don't know what to look for. I've never had this happen :/
Currently running the stock 2.3.7

Okay lol hold on so just go make sure you
1. Unlocked the bootloader right?
2. Flashed a custom recovery (clockworkmod)?
3. Flashed superuser for root access?
4. Now you have a stock rooted ROM?
If you have/did all that then yeah you could backup your stock rooted ROM, you don't need to back it up but its helpful just incase you mess something you could always restore it to start all over
And you could backup any ROM you install incase you didn't know, just remember when you install different ROMS make sure to do a proper full wipe which includes data/factory reset/wiping DALVIK cache, and formatting system and boot in the "mount" option in CWM. And now I think your good lol

Unlocked Bootloader? If I boot in fastboot it says Unlocked. Is this what you mean?
I have ClockWorkMod, but I haven't done anything with it.
I have superuser from the root
and I was working with a stock ROM the whole time....
I think I'm ok lol
So I'll back up my ROM, and flash a Nightly CM9? And back that up as well? Just perform a factory data reset before doing so, right?

Yeah if it says unlocked your good to go. The super user.zip you first flashed won't be needed once you flash different ROMS, it was only needed for stock because you didn't install a ROM you just unlocked the boot loader and super user just gave you root access that didn't come with stock.
Yeah backup your stock ROM JUST in case you encounter a boot loop so you can just restore and start over, you don't need to back up CM9 that's completely your choice if you want . Its convenient though if you like CM9 but still like to flash other ROMS that way you can just go back if you miss CM9 without doing the whole setup process.
And a full wipe is
Data/factory reset
Then wipe dalvik under "advanced"
Then wipe system and boot under the "mount" option in CWM

The hidden status bar and bottom menu hidden is amazing. I also like the inverted G-Mail and Facebook. Is this all separate from the Nightly ROM?
