Hey all,
Just curious what the difference is between vanilla android and the one by cmod. I know they are both similar to the stock android OS but did not understand anything more than that. Can someone please elaborate?
Thank you.
CM6 is AOSP look and feel but with some major tweaks to software by the team. You can get a better idea by looking at the changelog http://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_vendor_cyanogen/blob/froyo/CHANGELOG.mkdn
It's froyo 2.2.1 it uses ADW Launcher instead of the Launcher2 from Froyo.
So vanilla android is not just stock?
Vanilla Android is what's found on the Nexus 1. There really isn't such a thing from any other carriers because they all put their crap on it. Cyanogenmod is (I think) the way to bring the Nexus One's "Google Experience" Phone to other models.

Is there any good reason to keep the Froyo 2.2.2 on the G2x instead of upgrading to the GB 2.3?
Any advantages or disadvantages of keeping Froyo. Do you lose out on anything?
I would upgrade to gb just to get the latest baseband, because it did help much with certain wifi and rebooting issues, then downgrade back to froyo simply because of lg camera app, and stability. I've previously owned the nexus s, which had gingerbread and right off I noticed this g2x version of gb needed much improvement in comparison to the NS version.

Update your device. The camera issue is not worth not updating. The phone works much better on Gingerbread. Froyo doesn't support dual core cpus well. Gingerbread was designed with the new dual core chips in mind.
But that browser bug in gb is a pain in the a$$ tho.

I only want Android 2.2 for its style so if anyone can make a ROM with Android 2.2 style but Android 2.3 Specs and updates, that would be nice

Just change the launcher and find a froyo theme for it.

Any suggestions for my issue?
Geah!
i'm wondering, is there a list of the phones that will run android ASOP without any issues? currently i'm running a samsung fascinate, i'm looking to get a new phone, and i would love to be able to run straight ASOP.
is there a list out there? or anyone who can recommend a new phone that will run it? or one to wait for, for that matter?
thanks
Cyanogen is pretty close to ASOP, would be happy with that?
Here is a list with of devices that have cm roms.
http://download.cyanogenmod.com/
good find, i was looking into that rom, but i'm really looking for a device that will run the ASOP
currently i'm running the community rom on my fascinate, but i may try that just for the heck of it.
AOSP
Android Open Source Project
I personally wouldn't buy a device now unless it had Cyanogenmod support. I couldn't go back to using stock, and i certainly wouldn't use Android if it had Sense, Blur, Touchwiz..etc on it!
I'm in love with the Touchwiz 4.0 U/I. I'm wondering if it's possible to get that lockscreen on my rooted inspire with CM7?
I bought widget locker, and don't care for it, i've also tried magic locker and didnt care for that either.
MIUI has it

Is MIUI a theme or a rom? I'm new to rooting and rom. I just know i couldn't stand Sense and wanted as close to stock android as possible so i got CM7.
Is MIUI better than CM7?

ROM
MIUI
Is it better? That's personal preference - try them both and make up your mind

Well I love HTC Design and build quality since the HTC Touch Diamond back in 2007/8.
Also February of this year when I got the Inspire there weren't many android options on AT&T. I wasn't getting the outdated Aria or Captivate, I hated the current iteration of Motoblur on the Atrix, and I didn't like Touchwiz 3 on the Infuse that had yet to come out. Best option for me at the time was the Inspire because I couldn't take the iPhone anymore.
I just happen to not be a big fan of U/I skins in general - aside from the new Touchwiz 4.

Well like stated before, if you don't like sense getting an HTC phone was not your best choice however since you made the choice and lucky for you the Inspire has a lot of development, you're not totally boned since you don't like the stock sense feel. Again, I recommend and stand by any of the Collective team's work (Absolution and BBmod). MIUI is nice too but reminds me of an iPhone too much so if I really wanted that type of look, I would have gotten an iPhone (not trying to insult anyone, just my opinion so any of the MIUI fans take exception to that, sorrrrry!!) Best bet try all of the AOSP ROMs and decide for yourself which one you like the most!
Isn't the point of android being able to create your own environment that suits you? Isn't that why we have such a bevvy of ROMs to choose from? I'm on the same boat with the OP, loving HTC's build quality but sense doesn't suit me 100%. I've just recently re-installed LauncherPro and I'm enjoying the environment much better.

Yet you recommend ROMs that strip sense from the phone. Why didn't you just get a Nexus phone?
I'd say that Touchwiz has more in common with the look/feel of an iPhone than MIUI has by far. MIUI has a very nice, clean feel to it and adds a lot of elements of customization to the table. I really enjoyed using it while I had my old Captivate, more so than CM7. Right now I'm enjoying Android Revolution + LauncherPro since this offers the most flexibility for my use. I'd say try out MIUI and see if you like it.
Off subject but you sir have an awesome Avatar! CoCa!

Here is a link to Miui locker. It has several lock screens. Puzzle for sure. I bet it has the touch wiz lock. Have not searched far enough...but you can

*sigh* NO. TOUCHWIZ, just like any other manufacturer UI, IS CLOSED-SOURCE. IN OTHER WORDS. NO.

My good friend, I think you've misread or misunderstood what I was going at. The OP states he doesn't like sense. My obvious step in logical thinking is, "why get a sense based phone then?" I mean follow your own advice and tell the OP to get a nexus prime since he has explicitly stated he doesn't much like sense.
You're right I do recommend to him CM7 based ROMs because he has stated he doesn't like sense. Why would I advocate or recommend sense based ROMs to a user who has stated he doesn't like sense. I don't mind sense, I actually enjoy the U.I. I don't like that its a resource hog though. So I use CM7 based ROMs, not out of distaste for sense ROMs, just out of lack of customization in most of the sense based ROMs. From time to time I do use sense based ROMs ( BD or ARHD). I've just gotten to know the devs and users of the collective and have a hard time leaving them. Great guys/girls and some of the friendliest people you're gonna meet on XDA.
Like I said, my opinion on MIUI, if you took exception..nothing I can do there friend. That's an inner struggle you'll have to square away. MIUI is a great ROM, never said it wasn't, just reminds me of an iPhone. Plan and simple. My opinion. You're entitled to yours.
Excuse this question if it is in the wrong area.
I recently rooted my phone and am running reverted aosp which i am really enjoying. a few of my co-workers have windows phones. such as the focus. Now i understand that windows os is not open source and most of the roms for the sensation at least are either Sense or Non-sense, are there anything rom-wise in development that mimic windows phones operation? thanks in advance-
Check out Launcher 7 on the market, not rom, but awesome launcher. Identical!
Thanks techno I've actually used that launcher for months at a time but as you know it's merely a launcher and. Doesn't effect apps or anything else at all. Looking for a rom that actually changes most functions to text based like with windows

Sorry man, but they don't have but a few roms like that. There are over 450 android devices. You should install CM7 though, you will get better battery life.
well i like rev.aosp and battery life really isnt a concern. i run cm7 on my nook so i'm familiar with it, was just wondering if i could run a mango mod on my pyramid. guess ill have to just buy one
I'm a big fan of the Samsung TouchWiz version of Android (never used AOSP), and that gets me thinking. Why is it that people diss Samsung for having a bad UI when vanilla Android/AOSP has nothing special at all? I don't really like the Google search bar that pops up when holding down the Home button. I just disable the app. Who really needs it when you have Chrome on android? But my main question: Why does the vanilla version of Android get so much more praise than custom versions?
I used to only be a touchwiz fan, now only cm and aosp, it's just lighter, less complicated, and it's pure and android, sometimes I'll use my wife's s5 and it's just so much extra nonsense on it, just my opinion.

I don't see any real difference between TouchWiz and AOSP, aside from different UI, more features and some bloatware. Now, LG's Android UX has very noticeable differences (an old LG G - Something.). Because I've never dealt with any Android AOSP version, I've never noticed performance differences. My Note 5 runs smoothly for me, and no doubt your S5 should too.

It is preferred because it comes with no bloat, its clean, smooth and fast, simple.

Touchwiz Marshmallow can run just as smooth as AOSP. And the term "bloatware" has become generalized to pre-installed software that users would rather disable or uninstall. By the way, multi-tasking for releases of stock Android has only just come out, while Samsung has had that since Lollipop, I believe.

Bloat actually refers to the software installed by manufacturers and carriers, including their UI(such as Sense or Touchwiz). Vanilla has none, its only straight Google Android with no extras.
