[Q] HELP!!!!! - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

okay first I would like to say sorry to the forums mods...for posting this in the main forums when it might have been placed somewhere else.
Okay, I am a new member and I have been wanting to do some tricks and bring out all the beast that awaits within my phone. (I have the Motorola Droid-original with the 2.2 update)
Here is a list of what I am looking to learn:
1) how to get to the recovery screen
2) how to do a root and unroot
3) how to do a backup of the current system I have (just in case)
4) everything else that the phone has to offer

Umm, don't want to sound like an ass but you might try looking in the Droid forum rather that just posting a question here. I'm willing to bet they have a sticky about rooting your phone, recovery, and so on.

okay thank you....I will move it to there.....again thanks.

I am trying to move this thread to the proper place but can't seem to find the way in which to do this. Can anyone help me with this......It should have been in the Droid section of this forum. Sorry.

Once again, the search is your friend. You have to get clockworkmod recovery working first. You don't have it working. You may have installed it on your phone from the market, but you haven't followed the thread to actually get it working. Had you have clicked on any of the links in the replies in the other threads you posted earlier, you would have found the answers that you were looking for. Unfortunately, it seems that following directions isn't your strong suit.
If this doesn't help you, I'm sorry, but I don't know what will.

You probably gonna need a App something like TerminalEmulator for the phone.. Basically a Command Line Interface for Linux. Then follow this thread to a T..
STEP 2 Specifically for ClockworkMod
This thread is the 2nd most important thread in this SubSection of XDA for Mes Modders.
That one will help fix anything that went wrong in the 1st.
P.S. if you run into any problems using these methods read the rest if the thread.
Chances are the question you will ask has already been asked and you will find the answer long before someone can post back.
This guy deserves no help at all!!!!
Phidel already very nicely pointed this person to the places where this information ALREADY EXISTS (in their first thread) and instead of following it, they blatantly ignored it and started a new topic....

Starting A List For After Rooting.Need Help With It.

Ok if anyone can help me out on this. I would like to put a list of things you Need to do AFTER rooting your Inspire. Long story short I looked around countless of thread and find bits of pieces of things to do after your root.
Just would like to start something where this is a list to what you need to do after your done. So if ANYONE can help me out and may help others out with just the same ?s. This would be awesome. I know there are somethings like Titanium back up, ROM Manager, ClockWork. But if anyone can help put this together. Thank you.
Also if you have any videos that you can share that shows how to install something(because who does not like a Tut Video lol) rather it be a ROM or making a NANDOID(if thats right) backup if you need or not maybe just some how To's because I had to Root back to stock and this [ROM] AT&T Stock ROM - Sense [Unroot] and the user helped me out, thanks again friend, very informative.
thanks again for any help hints and walk throughs.
I for got to add this in once your done rooting you can check it with super user to see if everything is good. Also I found these guys to become very helpful major Props to them.. ANDROID Applications (How-To Backup & Restore) Titanium Backup just look that up on youtube or something
Not trying to be mean, but did you even take a look at the guide? I could be wrong, but I vaguely remember there being a video posted there.
As for what you do after you root your phone, you can flash a rom if you want... I mean its really a subjective question..
yes I looked just any video dealing with the inspire I hoping that this thread could kind of be one place for some ?s I see all over the place but its worth a shot to see if it turns out that way but for others that see the title of this thread could get some help with out ppl being "mean" for a ?s thats been asked and yes there is a search bar but...hey not everyone use it as much as we reply with "There is a search bar you know" or any other remark..
So Im hoping with that said that this thread could help other out with some Very common ?s. Because other user dont see a thread that looks like what they are looking for so others make a thread asking ?s that has been asked many times so with in time maybe this could help a lot of others.. Idk we will see..
Also after seeing a lot of videos about this there is so many different things that are said to do or to get and its get confusing and I can see how it could throw some user off..Because what through me off is the Making of a Nanadoid back up.. I kind of still dont know how lol.
That would be why the guide is stickied at the top its meant to be a one stop shop for "new rooters". There is about 20 pages of questions and answers, and many of the members will stop by and answer including devs.
And there a four videos posted in the opening post, one for the hack kit (outdated) and one for bubbys root method. There are also two other videos one that shows you how to recover from a soft brick, and how to flash a rom (including a nandroid back up).
The main reason for the guide to be stickied was to elevate the general forum, from getting a lot of redundant questions, which it has helped.
To answer your question, after you root you really don't have to do anything. As I said before you can flash a rom and make a nandroid backup, which is covered in the guide. You can flash a radio, which there is also a link to the thread for this. You can flash a theme for a rom, which is generally the same as flashing a rom. You can install market apps that require root access.
The only thing that "would/should be" required after rooting would be flashing a recovery ie. clock work mod recovery, which is covered in both rooting processes.
As I said before I am not trying to be mean or rude, but that is kind of why the guide was stickied.
I got you chief.. And I dont take it anything personal its the internet LOL! but If you dont mind can you past the link about making that nanadoid back up. and btw your not the only one with videos more then four. But yeah I hear about the same ?s being asked and yea your thread is like 300+ with a lot lol.. but Idk was hoping that this could be more organized I see that you have a lot of fixes and radios..etc..good stuff though.
I hope Im not steeling you thunder for post..

A nandoid back up is as simple as this...
Assuming you're rooted, and haven't flashed cwr yet...
Download ROM manager
Open it and choose flash clockwork recovery.
Once that's done, choose backup current rom
Provide a name for your backup
Let it reboot and do the backup.
If you already have clockwork recovery flashed, you can reboot into recovery and select the appropriate menu choice, though if you initiate the backup directly from cwr, I don't think it let's you choose the name.

That's correct, but the backups are stored in /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/$datecode$ It's very easy to rename them after the fact.... so long as you do it within a reasonable time period.
you can also do it from rom manager and name the backup.
sweet.. I just re rooted like an hour ago just re setting some stuff up

[Q] Rooted... now what.. sorry

Hi sorry, I couldn't find where to put this but I just rooted my ASUS transformer on 3.2 - 8.6.5.19 sucessfully and now need to or want to know what to do?
1-Ive heard of overclocking but I would want to do it safely
2-Id like to make a backup before I do anything that may mess things up
3-Ive got Rom manager on it but it asks to make sure that I have clockmodwork Recovery and I can't find where to get it.
and finally
4-What can I really do with this thing now?
Please let me know thanks
Well, browsing and searching through the forums should give you enough answers... If you had any other Android device, it is all the same here.
Anyway, if you've installed ClockWorkMod Recovery (the Rom manager can usually do this, but I am not sure as I haven't tried it for this device), you can try it by switching the device off and powering up with keeping power and volume down buttons pressed. After a while you'll get a message like "press vol-up to boot recovery in 5 seconds". If you press vol-up, you'll get into the recovery.
If you did not install CWM, you can also use this tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346180
That's what I used.
As for backup - you can do nandroid backup of your current rom from the CWM recovery (in case something goes wrong, you can easily revert to the current rom). You'll have to use one of the backup apps if you want to backup data and apps from your current rom though.
If you want to install a new rom, put it into the root of your sd card (real one, not internal storage), then do a full wipe (clear data/factory reset in CWM), then select "install zip from sd card" (don't remember the exact message), confirm, wait for it to finish, select reboot and you're done.
As for overclocking, I don't know yet, I've had this device just for a few days. Check out the available ROMs, they probably have some overclocking tools/features.
I just love this device - rooting and installing CWM without even having to connect to a PC
1- search the forum
2- search the forum
3- search the forum
4-throw it into the sea
1. Search & Read
If you ask such questions, you clearly do not have an idea what are you doing. Gain some knowledge before you harm your device
However Sigismund83's post should cover it up
ROM Manager does not work with the TF101.
Everyone always says "search" but it not always as easy as it seems when your a noob .. Although there are guides for alot of things, it isnt as noob friendly as it could be.
Some guides are out of date and throw you off in the wrong direction, and it can end up taking you a fair bit of time searching and reading old topics till you finally come across / figure out the correct process...
Heres what i would suggest (as i just did this myself)
1. Root with Razorclaw (youve already done)
2. Install the easy recovery installer Tool for flashing CWM in one click
3. Download a Rom of your choice ... Prime, Revolver, Revolution etc etc and transfer it to your microSD card
4. Boot into recovery (cwm) and flash the rom (flash update from SDcard) (this is another good quick tool Reboot to recovery App
Bobs your auntie ...
Thank you!

Boy ain't THAT the truth! Searching these forums is agonizing for exactly those reasons. It would be nice if there were more people that would just answer if they know or if they don't want to help just move on. "Read and search the forums" is less than helpful.

I think the point everyone is saying is, he rooted his tablet and then asks, "What do I do with it," which indicates he didn't really have a reason to root it in the first place other than for the fact that he could.
He should have researched rooting, what benefits it brings, pros & cons, etc, before just rooting for the hell of it.
I'm wondering why would someone root a device and not know what to do with it. It's like getting a tattoo and then ask now what?

There is nothing more noob-friendly than searching IMO. Where things get hairy for noobs is when they decide to take the easy route and ask questions that have already been asked, probably 5-10 times at least before someone really starts trolling those questions..
Searching is only difficult if you have a sub-grammar-school reading level..you have to be willing to use your eyes and actually read some, even things you may not need to know, to find what you are actually looking for...you may find that learning stuff that you didn't need actually turns out to save your ass later (as has happened to me many many times).
That is why we say over and over to search, because learning to find your own answers, a crucial skill in problem solving, is much better than simply answering a single question that has been asked over and over, you aren't teaching you are doing their work for them..you know, teach a man to fish and all that jazz. Honestly, the only time searching for your answers is difficult for noobs is when their device is brand new and not undergone a lot of development. But in the case of our TF101, there are entire websites devoted to it. It has been out for nearly a year now.
No offense to any noobs who didn't want to hear it!
I rooted mine to fix the speaker balance. No reason to root other than that, and I'll probably un-do it so I can use Movie rentals from the Market.

[Q] Changing the rom?

Hi,
Yesterday, my aunt a HTC One S from T-Mobile. Seems to be a very good phone.
I'm not sure if it was me but both my aunt an I find the interface sort of difficult to use. Is it something to do with because this is a branded phone so the bloatware and menus have changed? This is considering I have Galaxy Nexus and it's pretty clean.
That being said, from reading on the forums a bit, it seems like the Europe one is unbranded and maybe the key in solving this + getting rid of the unwanted apps which were were just literally throwing icons off the screen.
My question is, for changing the roms. What is exactly the steps I need to do? When I tried reading the FAQ for here, it seems more difficult than I thought and a bit confused. Since I did flash my own Galaxy Nexus, reading the FAQ over there was more straight forward (ie. dirver, get factory image, unlock boot loader, fastboot flash...).
Your help is appreciated.
i agree with the OP. we have 3 threads in the Development section to perform the root procedure and further manipulations and they all seem to be all over the place. we need one, up to date guide.
Welcome to the forum--
First off you are in wrong section--need to post in Q&A. A mod will probably move it for you
Start by reading FAQ/Rules etc
Hard to find one and only one guide anywhere. Need to read all you can. I have gone thru some threads 3 times to understand it all
I used the Unlock/Root thread and did all manually, and had to ask one or two questions in the noob thread after I got rooted, but all pretty straight forward if you have rooted before
The 1s is a great phone--enjoy
The basics are unlock with htcdev
flash a custom rom, with with stock one as some you have to flash boot.img separately and is more difficult
flash superuser, you can also get SU from market
The unlock/root thread by torxx is fairly easy
You don't need the interim cwr anymore, get regular one from koush 5.8.3.1 I believe
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions &
Read the Forum Rules Ref Posting
Thanks ✟
Moving to Q&A
Or give yourself a week or two with the phone. In the two weeks that I have had my One S, I have disabled apps that I know I will not use, I have personalized it to a point that I find it to be a very productive device.
Of course eventually I will root/unlock, etc. As of now I'm in no hurry.

[HELP THREAD] Ask ANY Question. Noob Friendly.

There are a lot of people joining XDA on a daily basis, and there are a lot of repetitive questions being asked
which clutter up the Development and 'Q & A' threads. Point them here. Feel free to ask or answer questions.
The idea of this thread is to get users to help other users with their problems/questions. People are usually
ridiculed for asking questions that other people deem stupid even though it may be a legitimate question. This
leads to new users being afraid to ask questions!
Only provide well mannered help towards users in this thread. Please do not spoon feed, but rather point in
the direction where that user can find an answer and educate himself. If you don't want to answer, at least
point out where to find the answer.
Before posting anything, I strongly advise you to read THIS thread.
Then, have a quick look at the names of threads in Post No. 2, you might find what you need right away.
Third. Even if you do get your question answered, please do come back and read threads in Post No. 2
(coming later as soon as we start getting the guides) to educate yourself. You'll be surprised how much time
and frustration it will save you in the future!
No abuse towards noobs tolerated here! That means:
NO TROLLING
NO NAME CALLING
NO RIDICULING
NO FLAMING
ASK ANY QUESTION HERE! No question is stupid or irrelevant in this thread. You will either get an answer or will get pointed in the right direction.

Just a few words of advice on keeping this thread clean of unnecessary clutter:
1. Before posting a question, it is highly recommended to read this thread.
2. Click the Thanks button on the posts that helped you, instead of posting "Thanks". This helps other members in finding out the best replies that get buried in the thread.
3. Do not use this thread to increase your post count! The Off-Topic forum is the place for that.
4. Do a simple search of this thread before asking to see if your question has been asked previously.
5. If your question has not received an answer after a few hours, please be patient. Someone will answer you shortly. If you do not get an answer in 24 hours, you may BUMP your post. If you still have no answer after a week, do mention me in your post.

How to Ask your question in this thread, the UI in posting, so that you'll get better help
As this is the General Question & Answers Section, it will be probably usual that all users asking questions here will have the same device, so make sure To mention the device you own, if your question is related to your phone specifically.
Describe your problem completely, including all the steps that got you into the problem and you performed while trying to solve the problem
That makes us and everyone here trying to help you, understand and answer your question in a better way.

GENERAL HELP THREAD
ZTE V970 Brick?
Hi,
I've been trying to install Bruno's ROM for this phone (cam with all chinese apps). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1856578
but have a big problem. I tried my best to follow the instructions but, really couldn't work out if I was doing things in the right order.. is there an actual step- by step for this procedure? I know I'm a noob and read this read that I am an idiot etc. etc. but I thought if I used to ROM on that page and the software recommended it would be easy.
Here's what I did:
Downloaded all the files as told.
Tried to 'flash a custom recovery' as here http://bm-smartphone-reviews.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/mt6575-flashing-tutorial.html
but it did not mention how to use the ZTE custom recovery file http://d-h.st/Vgt
I'm also not sure at all that the 'MediaTek drivers' were installed properly. The phone never appeared in the Device manager.
I opened SP flash tool and followed this: http://bm-smartphone-reviews.blogspot.co.uk/2012/05/mt6575-flashing-tutorial.html
and selected the 'scatter file' from the unzipped Bruno ROM (took a while to realise had to unzip it to get the file!!!)
I noticed most of the boxes on the scatter file were unchecked but carried on and ignored a warning message about the phone may not be able to boot (the tutorial said to ignore it).
I had to click 'download' then plug the phone in and eventually I got the red loading bar. This finished... then nothing else.. no purple bar.. nothing.
So after waiting a few minutes I unplugged the phone.
It now appears to be a total brick. What did I do wrong? Why no purple bar? Were the scatter items supposed to be unchecked? What was the 'custom recovery' file for? Because the SP flash prog never asked for it.
Is there any point in trying it again or is the phone dead?
Thanks for any help..
Theo
stupid newbie question: Is there any way to run fastboot without connecting the phone to a computer?
Device: HTC One V [CDMA]
Network: Virgin Mobile US
Goal: I want to be able to relock and unlock (which on my device is
Code:
fastboot flash unlocktoken <txt file>
) my phone without having to connect to a computer.
Motivation: I've already managed to near-brick my HTC One V twice, both due to HTC's silly OTA radio update (details here), and the only way I was able to fix it in either case was to use Solution #2 from the linked thread (although I didn't try solution #1, there is absolutely no way to do #1 without Windows, never mind without a computer). Since I've proved perfectly capable of soft-bricking without the intervention of a computer—although I don't think that will happen anymore as long as I remember not to use my two Nandroid backups with the newer radio—I would really like to be able to unbrick it without a computer in case I have to do it when I don't have a computer handy.
Thanks in advance!

Can you go back into recovery mode? I don't have that device, so it would difficult for me to understand your situation completely. If you done a nandroid backup earlier, try to restore it (it was suggested by the op/bruno in that thread).
If not then try asking for help from bruno himself or other people in that thread, they can answer you in better way, because they might have passed from your situations earlier.

newbie question: Is there any way to run fastboot without connecting the phone to a computer?

I own a samsung device, so I don't know much about htc. And I feel nandroid is only way you can unbrick a soft brick without PC. Still wait for others who own htc to answer you.

ROM "TheUltimatum"
Hi all at XDA, I LOVE THIS SITE!!! :good:
This is my first post, and for annoying, yet understandable, reasons I am forced to pose my question here. (feels a bit like putting a message in a bottle...)
I have just installed The Ultimatum ROM (with Metro UI & swapall kernal options) on my Galaxy ace. I guess as I live in France my language setting was automatically set to French. After setting it to my preffered English, I noticed that in the app draw the language for certain apps remained in French!!! I had the same issue with this rom's previous incarnation "WP-Remix" however, after an updade to the Launcher8 app through play store, the problem was solved. :highfive:
Whats weird is this: in this rom the Launcher8 app is not recognized by Google Play as being the Launcher8 app, and therefore, will NOT update. Is it a heavily modded version of launcher8? or is there a settings problem somwhere perhaps? Would repairing permissions, or something like that help play find the app, if so, by what method? Recoverey or Titanium? This ROM seems to have some quirks unique to it alone, and I would not want to fcuk somthin' up!
I hope this finds the right eyes, Any help would... well........help.
PS: Yes I know its not a huge problem, and yes I do speak French, its just annoying is all...

You can simply download the updated copy of the launcher8.apk from some other site. after that use any root exploring app like root explorer/es file maneger,( I hope you have root privilages on the rom you are using.) Just replace the old apk from /System/App folder of with updated one and set its permissions as (rw-r-r). You can also try fix permissions option from cwm recovery. Also you can find more help in your device's question and answers section.
You will be allowed to post in developement sections after you complete 10 posts. Make them helpful/cintributory to xda.
And you are most welcome here if you have any problems again.

Hi,
I can't post to the original thread - I don't have permission. I didn't do a backup because it said to do that if you didn't want to loose data and the phone is new and has no data. I tried holding the volume button and on button (is that recovery mode) and nothing happens.
What I don't understand is why the 'scatter file' appeared to be incomplete for the ROM (V3.1MOD (27-12-2012) ) and why the downloading stopped after the red bar.. I don't think I did anything wrong. Is there a problem with the scatter file, if so, there may be a lot of people wrecking their phones with this rom??
Still need help!
Hii, I have a htc touch pro 2.
My device doesn't seem to charge properly, when the phone is powered on and in use or not in use, the phone's battery stays the same.
When the device is turned off, it takes like 2 or 3 hours sometimes to charge it 30 % .
I tried a different usb cable, I got the same result.
Do you think the problem is in the battery or the charging port ?
P.S.: I have been using my battery for almost 2 years.

Its probably ur battery. Try using a new one. And check ur battery after removing it to see if its swollen.
And do u charge using a USB connection or by using a wall charger? Charging via USB is usually slower.

What do you mean?
If you are asking reasons, then there are many, like kernel issues, improper flashing of files etc. Try to explain your query.
