Not familiar with the Android OS lingo and need to bone up so I can hook my kids up with some cool stuff

Well..
With android (especially with HTC Sense, HTC's UI) you can add plenty of little things to customize your phone. From the top
You can move application icons from page to page on the homescreen along with widgets. to add an application to the homescreen you can open the app drawer/list and longpress it and drag it to the homescreen. Once on the homescreen you can move it around.
Along with Apps you can add widgets to the homescreen, a widget is an app that runs in the homescreen it can do things like display a news ticker, enable/disable settings (power control widget), and other things like play music and search boxes. these can be very useful for getting a quick glance at information without opening up the app.
To change the background you can longpress the homescreen and select wallpapers.
If your phone supports it you can use live wallpapers, search for them on the market or on XDA.
One tip is dont install lots of apps! dont go and download every app you see it will slow down your phone, also dont use task managers as it messes with android native application closing process.
Also the biggest customization of all if your phone is rooted (IE: full permissions and access to the system) and has a hacked bootloader you can load custom roms that are themed or have a big performance boost.

I spent the weekend tearing through other forums
Found a program called Sideload Wonder Machine that allows apk files to be put into the Aria without having to "root" the phone or otherwise dcik around with it. Worked pretty good after I found the USB Driver to sync it up with my laptop. that was a bit of a process in and of itself.
At the end of the day (weekend) I didn't really find too much to load into the phone that was not already available at the droid market. Swype, yes, but not for this phone. Loaded F-Secure anti-theft too but that, too, is not for this phone.
I am not sure how business savvy these droids can be but they are cool. Kids love them. The UI operates much like the iPhone and much less like WinMo.
I'll keep dciking around with it and see what happens. Thanks again.

i agree dont let the inteface fool you, android works as a tool just as well as winmo if not better
AppInventor is basically an online resource for making Android apps. However, to make them you don't need to write codes mostly, making this easier for people like me, who dream about actually being a dev.AppInventor, although is a great resource, but got lost in the forums .
The quality of app is really just dependant on the amount of time you are you wiling to spend on it, and how much time you have taken to understand the AppInventor program itself.
There are many apps that can be made from this, ranging to just info apps, to ones that provide links, and others that actually turn out to be mathematical games. Again, it is just up to the amount of time you decide to spend on the app itself, so don't expect your app to be something utterly brilliant the first time.
This can be used as a learning process. The basic logic behind any app development can be found in here.
So here are my first two attempts.
The first one is basically an app that provides me links.
'Indian Restaurants Guide'
This was my first attempt, so please bear my 'noobness'
The app basically provides buttons, which, when pressed lead the person to a website I built. I did not make it a a major thing, trying to draw traffic to the website, rather the website was built for the app. The app, and the website, both are low in content.

This is my Second attempt
Basically, this app is a bit more complex, and a lot more logic was used.
The app is about an actress, and it gives some more info about her, and also provides links to her facebook and twitter profiles.
Further, it has also links which open up in the youtube application as trailers of her movies.

The second app, if you notice was a bit more complex, and I had to make use of the Blocks Editor (a tool provided that helps you create the logic) much more. Also, I had to dig deep into the online resources about the app itself, to make sure that nothing in the design and the blocks went wrong. You get better at stuff as you go along, and I think this will be same.

'Publish Your App on Android Market'
Taking, it to the next step.
If you want to publish your apps on the Android market, you need to make an Android market publishing account.
The cost is 25$, but if you are even an amateur 'dev', this might be worth it.
With AppInventor, you can not think about generating revenue from the apps you make, unless they are exceptional.
However, once you make an account by going to
www.market.android.com/publish
you can start posting apps on the market.
All apps made on the AppInventor will need to be signed before you can put them on. However, before signing you might want to consider changing your app icon, because the one that comes from AppInventor is just the default one, and I expect you would want to add some personal touch.
Here are the steps on putting your own icon on the app.

These steps below are not necessary now. In the Appinventor window, when you select Screen1 it will give you the option to set the icon for the app.
The steps below are here, if that does not work out or you are just trying to change the icon of any app.
1)- Get your finished .apk file and rename it from '.apk' to '.zip'
2)- Browse into the now '.zip' file (use any means you like 7zip, windows explorer, etc)
3)- In the first directory of your app you will see a folder called 'res', which will contain the image file.
Now I have tried replacing the file, but somehow it does not work, so select the 'res' folder and delete it.
4)- Make a new folder in the '.zip' folder called 'res'. Then make a subfolder 'drawable'
5)- Find your icon image that you want to put it.
The icon needs to be a 48x48 image in '.png' format.
I used Microsoft Paint on Windows 7 to resize my image to that size and then save as a '.png' file.
You can use that, or if on XP use the default image resizing tool called 'MS PowerToy'
Or you can use this program to resize the images

6)- Place the image file in res\drawable\'your image file'.png
7)- Now re-name the image file to 'ya'
8)- Then rename the '.zip' file back to'.apk'
If you can't do it on your computer, send the file to your mobile, and use Astro to rename.

9)- This bit's maybe an easier bit, signing your app.
Since there is no easy way to sign an app, I used this program which signs the app with your details.

10)- After this get the '.apk' created which says 'zipaligned'
Goto your Android market dev account, and upload the '.apk'
Complete the steps, provide Screenshots, and another Icon. This time the icon
has a bigger size. 512x512. Use any way to Resize your image. Then make your '.apk' Active, and Publish your app.
Sounds maybe a bit complicated, but can be done easily if the steps are followed.*
Please leave your feedback concerning your experience with this program, also, please post any links to apps that you make using this.
*I have done all this on Windows 7, so the steps you need to take to complete the procedure might be different on a Mac.

FYI, AppInventor is one of those Google Labs projects that's been canned. It's still open and there seems to still be some question as to whether they're actually going to shutter it or move it elsewhere and open source it. No, I'm not trolling, I've been an AI user since shortly after it was launched and have been following the discussions over at its Google Group.
I made an account about a year ago, but did not start using it till now.
I did hear some news about it being dropped off by Google, but I don't think that has happened yet, or will anytime soon.

This is easier, in the sense that actual app development is exremely complicated. Parts of this (the really complicated apps which make use of webdb) are not easy to grasp, However, most of it is quite straight forward. Plus there are a lot of tutorial videos on this. Just search on youtube, and don't feel like you don't know anything after seeing a really complicated one cause that's really as hard as it gets.
Starters should really begin with Purr and paintpot app, and then maybe move on to making a twitter application and so on.

App inventor can be frustrating at times due to some of its limitations, but all in all, its pretty good. I have seen that once MIT gets app inventor back from Google soon they have big plans to help it take off even more.
I have an app on the market too, its in beta, its free, and i havent really been working on it for very long. almost 1000 downloads in 2 weeks, so im happy.
Its a RPGish game, with barcode scanning, online battles, npc battles, items, leveling up, etc. Made a network with usernames/passwords, etc. App inventor can be pretty awesome if you use it to its potential.

I use autoanswer along with my audio system in my care for "hands free" driving and it works well. I would like to create a launcher that will launch this application as well as Pandora but have no Linux experience. I've rooted, don multiple roms and in the past did a bit of basic and cobol so, I'm not afraid to try something. Since I have clockwork on the phone, I'm not worried too much about bricking it. Ultimate would be and app that I could have on a home screen to start this.

Get an app called tasker, it will take some time figuring out how to set it up but it will do the job you want.

edit: just installed the app..sometimes the app makes the phone go crazy!! i have to logout fro the browser or turn off wifi for the phone to become normal.
This is without a doubt 'the best' app for controlling your phone from your browser. I've installed and played with many and this one tops the lot in my opinion.
It's clean, easy to use, great interface (both on the phone and PC).
Side note: This thread would probably be much better off in General Android Apps and Themes forum - http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=530. The app isn't specific an LG Optimus.

I'm a little hesitant to try out apps like this as well but they have nothing but good feedback on the market and a good following on both Facebook and Google+, as well as having their own website, so I was happy to give it ago.
@smackdownn Yeah I am with you on the whatsapp, this app is brilliant.
@Nucleotide & SpyderTracks Seriously? Whats the issue with privacy? Scared these devs are going to email or sms your gf while you are out? Either that or learn to hide your porn somewhere that is not your phone. I have said this before on so many occasions, when you were using a nokia/winmo/other NON android phone, they sneakily NEVER asked for permissions, but you installed apps that could pretty much do anything on your phone anyway

I agree. I don't have anything I would call "sensitive data" on my phone but I do have a lot of contact information such as names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and other information which although not really sensitive, I still don't want other people to have - especially if I don't know about it. Not only that but apps can track your location, the buttons you press on your phone, numbers dialed, text messages sent, websites you visited, and the list goes on.
With that in mind I take caution when installing any app. I check for things like the amount of reviews on the market, the quality of the reviews (good vs. bad), does the developer have a website, a Facebook page with a good following, and so on.

You don't need to install on the PC. You just need to open the browser and visit web.airdroid.com to log in. Then you can manage you phone on the web. Easy, right?
I've used an Android tablet for about a year now, and although I've put in a lot of time to make it useful and controllable, it still has a lot of troubling mysteries. I have a few questions for developer types that hopefully will help shed some light on things:
1. Why don't applications feature a "Close" button? In both Windows and GNU/Linux with a GUI, you get a neat little "X" at the top right of the window. Usually, when you click this, the application terminates. Is that so much to ask for on Android? The means of closing apps on Android seem to be entirely up to the devs and there doesn't appear to be a standard way at all. Some of the apps I've used on Android don't have any way to close them whatsoever, with the exception of killing them from a task manager or the "Manage Apps" section of settings.
2. Why do many of these programs suddenly and mysteriously start running entirely on their own? It's terribly frustrating for me to kill an app and in a half an hour find it there on the task manager list again, running without my having asked for it to do so. Where is this controlled? If there is some sort of task scheduler making this happen, why can't I easily see a list of scheduled tasks and choose which ones to run or not to run?
3. For programs that *are* running in the background (the ones I *want* to have running), why is it that they usually don't have some sort of taskbar icon to indicate at a glance that they are still running?
4. Why can't I see everything that's loading when the tablet starts? I guess I'm asking to see a logcat screen instead of a splash screen. GNU/Linux distros don't usually hide everything from the end user, so why isn't it optional on an Android tablet? Even in custom ROMS all I get are neat looking splash screens, not a terminal interface on boot.
5. Why doesn't a decent firewall application yet exist for Android? All I seem to be able to find are really coarse ones like Droidwall, where it's an all or nothing proposition (allow/block). I'd like to be able to control protocols, ports, zones and individual IP addresses and ranges like a good firewall on Windows or GNU/Linux allows. I am constantly under suspicion that someone is doing something on my tablet without my even being aware of it.
6. Why are permissions for applications so difficult to control? Maybe I don't want some stupid game getting a look at my contacts list. I realize I can just uninstall the game, but so many apps seem to tap into stuff that they shouldn't be allowed to, I feel like some sort of permissions control should be a default standard thing in Android. Instead all there seems to be are a couple of apps on the market that may or may not work.
7. Do any of you developers feel dissatisfied about the state of Android, and does Google take your feedback seriously?
8. Are there any forks of the Android OS that don't rely on Google for anything? I'm not 100 percent sure about the difference between a GNU and an Apache license. How much of the OS is closed-source? Is it enough to prevent a true, fully open-sourced Android-based OS from being made?
Sorry if any of these questions sound stupid, but even though Android is supposed to be more open than iOS, it's still not open enough for my tastes. I actually feel safer using Windows than Android, and that's just not how it should be. Am I alone in this feeling?
Ok. I would honestly say you should have gone with a Windows tablet if you want all those... It's not a computer. It's a mobile device running a mobile os. It's not gonna be a full blown computer.

1. Well, its a mobile OS and it would be rather annoying to have a close button on every (even most) apps. No mobile OS has had a close button
2. That's an app problem, the developer either wanted the app to do that for some function, or they made some mistake in creating causing that to happen.
3. There would be too many apps, and I doubt people want extra notifications in the status bar just informing them what's running. For example, my friends Stratosphere has a status notif whenever WiFi is connected, and it annoys the crap out of me whenever I use it.
4. Probably, because people don't care... remember Android (like WP and iOS) are supposed to appeal to consumers as a phone for "facebook, games, and internet," and if the splashscreen/bootanimation was a logcat, people would just go "wut?" Also, as smartphones get faster and faster, so does bootup time. And there wouldn't be enough time to read what's on the logcat before it fully boots and you're at the lockscreen
5. Ask the devs.
6. Once again, dev thing. They are entitled to putting whatever permission they want, and Google isn't going to stop them. Just think about it though, most people don't care about permissions. iOS doesn't display them (even though they are there) and people download apps like there's no tomorrow anyway.
7. I read somewhere that the main designer of Android was "40% complete" at ICS. It gets me excited at what's next to come, since 4.0+ is already pretty amazing.

8. There's the Chinese Aliyun OS which looks and feels a lot like Android but doesn't rely on Google - but I would't try it. You could try Ubuntu Linux if your device supports it.
Android needs to be like apple with updates time to close source this already and just have one phone already

Wrong, PocketPC 2002, which I used for 10 years on my HTC Wallaby, had a close button for every application.
@McMick, many of your points struck a chord with me and I have often asked myself the same things since migrating to Android from Pocket PC 2002 on my HTC Wallaby. Certainly points 1, 3, 7 and 8.
Since I jumped from PPC 2002 to Android 2.3.6 I've had the same thoughts. And I was for instance surprised to see that only now (Galaxy Note 2) are the very first steps being taken towards multiple windows.
I agree with point 4 too. On a PC (Linux or Windows) you can choose whether you see what's starting (BIOS and OS boot) or prefer a reassuring animation.
5. I have Avast!Mobile Security which has what is reckoned to be one of the best firewalls for Android, but even that only has, as you say, block or allow (individually for WiFi, 3G and mobile network).
6. The trouble with limiting permissions for apps is that if they can't get the access they want, they won't work. Personally I use the app Privacy Blocker which works around that by feeding the apps you choose not to allow to snoop nonsense information.
However it's not enough just to stand on the sidelines and issue one's wishes to "the developers". The point and the spirit of XDA-developers is that we can all start modifying things if we want to. So instead of saying "Why can't I" the thing to do is to start reading and learning and seeing if you might not after all just be able to ... do something yourself when it comes to your device.
Every Android developer does what appeals to them, which is why there is such a wonderful diversity of ROMs and apps for Android, particularly here on XDA.
So get stuck in and start trying to change things on your own device for a start. On point 5 for instance, you do see a logcat screen when you boot into recovery mode, so perhaps there's a way to display that when booting. If you do get started on modifications in the directions you indicate, I shall certainly follow progress with interest.

@McMick, many of your points struck a chord with me and I have often asked myself the same things since migrating to Android from Pocket PC 2002 on my HTC Wallaby. Certainly points 1, 3, 7 and 8.
Since I jumped from PPC 2002 to Android 2.3.6 I've had the same thoughts. And I was for instance surprised to see that only now (Galaxy Note 2) are the very first steps being taken towards multiple windows.

Lol jk I was, but I wasn't "born" to technology back then. I got my first phone only 3 years ago or so... and that just makes it seem that close buttons are now obsolete (on Mobile OSes, at least

The app [root] live logcat by the one and only Chainfire [/hyperbole] should fix this. There are free and paid versions. Something to check out if you're rooted. Please let us know of the results. Added on edit: from Google Play.

I think I understand your priorities as moderator. This is of course a thread near the "top" of XDA and as such will far more readily attract spammers and other lowlife than further down in the more comfortable device threads where I am more used to posting. So you will want to quickly close any thread that seems to be becoming stale. Right?
