[Q] Help to decode a phonebook file from A1000 - General Topics

Hi,
I have a Motorola A1000 that has definitely failed.
Before it had broken, I had downloaded the phonebook with all my contact numbers.
I wish to retrieve the phone numbers, but it is a binary file that cannot be read by any normal editor (ASCII editor, winword, excel).
I can see the numbers and the names of the contacts, but they're mixed in an unreadable mess.
The file is a file named 297.dat. It is one of many .dat files that I downloaded from the A1000.
It is impossible to read it with the cable SW that I used to manage the phone. The programs rejects any operation if the phone is not connected, and refuses to read the backup copy of the phone files.
Can somebody help me?
I desperatly need to retrieve my phonebook numbers.
Best regards
Alberto

Have you tried using a hex editor to manually pull the numbers and enter them into a new phone or just a text file? If you could post the file someone here might be able to help you if you can't on your own.

Here is the file
Hi,
I have opened it with ultraedit, but I cannot understand the rule by which the number and the names are associated between them.
I attach the (zipped) binary file. If somebody wishes to exercise his skill in decoding and decrypting, I'll be very grateful!!

"Sharing violation" when trying to restore from a copied cemail.vol

My phone got all screwed up, so I copied as many files off of it as I could using the Windows "Mobile Device" folder (no programs will run on the phone, but I could see the files). I copied pim.vol and cemail.vol among others. I hard reset the phone and copied pim.vol back onto the phone, and now my contacts, calendar, call history, are all restored. I'd like to restore the cemail.vol file also, but when I try to delete the default one I get:
Cannot delete 'cemail':
There has been a sharing violation.
The source or destination file may be in use.
Click to collapse
When I try to delete it from the computer, I get the same thing:
Cannot delete file cemail: There has been a sharing violation.
The source or destination file may be in use.
Click to collapse
How do I get around this?
Answer: Remove "messaging" from the Today screen so that it is not in use, and restart.
Long path tool
Hi Guys, just to update you, finally I found a way to solve it
Do you have error messages?, like :
* Path too long
* Error cannot delete file: cannot read from source file or disk
* Cannot delete file: Access is denied
* There has been a sharing violation.
* Cannot delete file or folder The file name you specified is not valid or too long. Specify a different file name.
For that I tried it with LONG PATH TOOL

[Q] How can I change file path inside of a exe file?

Hi.
First of all, let me say that half of time took me to look for the right forum in XDA to post this message, and I'm still not sure I'm in the right place..
I think my Q is about modifying my OS, and this is why I post it here.
If the admin think there's better forum to this issue - I'd love to hear it..
Now, to business:
I have a GPS device, brand is X-GPS Navigation, Model GPS-S450B, that I will like to play with.
The OS is Windows® Embedded CE 6.0.
I just found out that at my GPS device, there is a file that resposible to a certain BMP that shown up at the shutdown process.
The filename is "PowerKey.exe", and it reffer to a file named "Notice_en.bmp".
I want to change that Notice-en.bmp file, to show that message in another langueage. I tried to overwrite the file with a similar bmp file, no luck. The file just re-created.
I've tried to edit the PowerKey.exe with a hex editor, and write a new path, to a file in NandFlash directory instead of the Notice_en that lays in Windows folder.
That also didn't go so well. "PowerKey has been preform illegal action and have to be shout down" or something like that, was the message. I could only put the device to sleep, until I recovered the old PowerKey file.
Any solution how to change the BMP file that resposible for the shutdown message?
(I guess the best idea is to write a registry entry to overwrite the BMP file in \Windows directory with the one in the \NandFlash directory every boot, only problem - I donno how to do it. )
Anyone?
There's no solution to my problem?
Recompile the exe.
Thank you.
Any chance to general guidlines in how is that done?

In addition to apktool (thanks, @kaiodduarte), you're also going to need a good text editor (I use Notepad++), an archive manager (like 7zip or WinRAR), and the ZipSigner app for your device.

It will help you with actually being able to make edits to text files without screwing up all of the line endings and encoding.

BLU bricked, SPFlash Read yields encrypted contacts2.db, what next

I have a BLU phone that was my only source of contacts with no Google or backup (yes, I know). It was dropped a significant distance. It won't show any indication of charging or powering up, no lights or sounds. However when I plugged in the USB port I noticed the toggling of the USB driver install, typical for a MTK device so I decided to try to read from it with SPFlash tool.
To try to get at the contacts I downloaded a factory restore ROM and loaded the scatter file to see what location I needed to seek to find the user data for download. I first found userdata.img location from the factory scatter file and set up SPF under the ReadBack tab and used the Add button to specify a range beginning with and including the same numbers where the scatter file indicated the user data was, plus with SPF tool I stated I wanted the user data area read and saved as userdata.img. Now clicking on the read and then plugging the phone in with the read button pre-pushed, the SPF tool took off reading as soon as the dead phone USB was plugged in, operating just like I was flashing or writing to the phone. (Excitement was mounting.)
From here on my Windows machine I installed DiskInternals Linux Reader and mounted the userdata.img with that software and was able to navigate to the db file containing the contacts and the android call list located at
/data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/contacts2.db.
Now the DiskInternals software allowed me to save the contacts2.db as a Windows file anywhere on the laptop but when I tried to open it with SQLite, it said the file is encrypted. I viewed the file using a Linux friendly editor (Context) and saw some names and numbers in readable text, but they were surrounded by tons of formatting and unprintable characters. (Looked something like a MS Word docx file.) I also tried the FireFox plugin for SQLite in addition to the SQLiteManager and the SQLite browser software. All of them said the file had a password that was needed to open it. (Exit excitement.)
Now it looks like my options are to either try to find someone or thing that can hack the password of the contacts2.db, locate the password perhaps hidden somewhere in a system.img that I can attempt to extract via the same method as I did the userdata, or I can try to assemble a working group of restore "parts" which include this userdata.img, adding it to some mix of the restore file and other IMG files I can possibly extract from the "bricked all but for flash tool" mostly dead phone. Theoretically, with such a reassembled package of IMG files I would then go look for an exact same model of this bricked phone and then try to load the new assembly of IMG files onto that good used phone.
I am open for suggestions of how to solve the puzzle. The objective is to get a list of readable contacts from the crashed phone and ideally get them exported into a format that can be input into another phone.
Thanks in advance.
P.S. Android 5.0 on the phone
