Hey guys, what visual voicemail apps are you using? For some reason I can't find any in the market. I don't know if there's a problem because I've rooted my X10 but it's irritating.
Is anyone here able to download any visual voicemail apps? Do I need to apply any sort of market fix or patch? I am in Canada, BTW. Thank you!
What is a visual voice mail?
It's a voicemail app that allows you to instantly access and play your voicemail without dialing the voicemail number and waiting what seems to be forever.
I usually program my voicemail number to include my password but still.. that's the one thing I miss about my iPhone. I'd just click on my voicemail and immediately play it without waiting forever.
Get Google voice. it will do what you want. It will send you SMS or e-mail with transcribed message.

I want something that accesses the voicemail system and actually interacts with it. It's a front-end basically. I live in Canada too so Google Voice isn't an option. Thank you for trying to help though.

Well, in this case it should be something carrier specific i guess.
So, something provided by Rogers, Fido, Bell, etc.
I don't think 3rd party software has access to voicemails but i might be wrong.
How do you include the password or access code to the voicemail number?
I am with Rogers in Ontario, and when I got my x10 and new data plan.....my voice messages automatically come to me via sms. I am not sure how or why.....but they do

can't you create a contact which contains the "pause" (long press on # I think) and the passcode then create a shortcut on your home screen to it?

This is what I was talking about. Still though, it takes a good while before it actually goes through and the voicemail waiting indicator drives me insane!
I found a few apps in the market but can't access them. I'm at work. I'll post the names later and hopefully another user can test it out. It was so awesome on the iPhone!

Is there a way to use Google voice solely for voicemail and not for voicemail and text? I had it set up like this on my Epic prior to the Google and Sprint thing but now it can't figure it out. Using Google for text requires a data connection and with the spotty data I've been getting I don't want to use Voice as well as other things about text thru Voice that I don't like.

Yes - I just did this today. You have to go online to your Google Voice settings and unlink your Sprint number. Then on the left side, you'll have an option like "Upgrade Google Voice" or something similar. Choose the option to create a new Google Voice number (and not link to mobile phone). It will run you through the steps and give you a new number to use for voicemail only.
I then went into the voicemail settings on the phone and edited the voicemail number to the new one Google gave me.
Sorry for the vague description. I don't remember the exact steps since I did it over 12 hours ago. Hope this helps!

Thank you. I hated having my texts stored online and thanks to your steps I now can use Handcent SMS again. I tried using someone else's instructions and it didn't work, but now thanks to this I no longer have my Sprint phone # as my Voice #. I do like getting my Voicemail through Google Voice, but texts for me are more private and I don't need them flooding my GV inbox nor do I need them stored online for anyone Google chooses to let see them.

I'm trying to create a how-to. Am I correct that you:
- Did not use Google Voice before you got this phone.
- Set up Google Voice directly through the phone app.
- Were able to disintegrate Google Voice from your Sprint number, and request a new Google Voice number after the fact?
Also, did it say something like "You only have 30 days to revert your Sprint number?"

Does anyone know if a Sprint Visual Voicemail App exists for the Nexus 5? I know I can use Google Voice, but I just don't like it. I have tried one 3rd party application, YouMail, but I didn't like that one either, it seemed to "heavy".
T-Mobile has a NICE visual voicemail system, I really like theirs.
I was thinking Sprint would have their own dedicated one, but that Sprint chat support has no idea what I am talking about and keep giving me weird directions to just setup regular voicemail, not visual voicemail.

Yeah, as I said in my first post, I don't really like Google Voice. I guess I'll just have to try out each app in the play store one by one until I find out what I like.

Most of the ones in the play store, like Visual Voicemail, requires you to set up call forwarding for missed calls to their VOIP services. I felt uncomfortable with companies I never heard of having access to all my voicemails, contact info, etc.

Damn, hopefully Sprint can come up with something, I hate dialing and listening to the slow ass computer lady before hearing a message!
Somehow I doubt Sprint will work on anything since they already support free Google Voice integration using your native Sprint number. So, unofficially, Google Voice is your Sprint Visual Voicemail. With the GV app, voice mail even integrates in to your call log.

Its kind of nice because you can listen to and scrub through voicemails, within the call app. however, I was a fan of my iphone's visual voicemail, which was nice because you just went into it and it listed all the voicemail you got. but the integration with google voice make it pretty spiffy, just not in the same aspect as having visual voicemail in its own spot.
OP, is there anything specific you don't like about google voice? if you log into your google voice account online, you can change settings and such. you can set it up to practically not even see google voice anymore, once the sprint integration with the phone app works for you.

Actually, if you open the GV app and select "Voicemail" from the top left drop down, Voicemail had it's own folder. The convince of also having full access to my voice mail and text messages on my phone, Nexus 7, and laptop, including bring able to send text messages from those devices makes GV worth it to me.

Yeah, I mean, I tried it. It just seemed to me, like Google was taking over my phone, IE the voicemail message, saying this Google subscriber canot come to the phone right now, I know I can customize that, but it made it seem like Google was taking the whole account of my phone and it just didnt sit well with me... Call me paranoid I guess :/
I liked the TMobile Visual Voicemail, its simplicity was nice, you just clicked on the voicemail, listened, done. Easy peasy

I personally dislike Google Voice for 3 reasons:
1) It's just flat out UGLY. The UI of the app is just not pleasant to look at and is in serious need of being updated to reflect Google's current design standards.
2) I don't like that it shows all my texts within the app. It makes no sense to me that they would even add texting functionality into a voicemail app. It's just totally unnecessary. I realize that I can disable SMS notifications in GV, but it's functionality that I don't want or need.
3) Why would I want to change my voicemail settings online and not within the app itself? It's completely inconvenient that I had to use a computer to remove the "press 1 to answer the g*dd*mn call" option that I found myself saddled with after activating GV for the first time. Ditto for the fact that I don't need an SMS message AND an email in addition to the GV notification when I get a voicemail, and the only option to change my notification settings is online. Why can't I just change all the settings right within the app?

Why use a computer at all? Chrome, request desktop site, login to voice.google.com and change settings right on your phone.

I'll give you that. I'd still much rather be able to change all the settings right within the app.
I know OP asked about Sprint VVM and is aware of GV, but my experience with GV and the Nexus 5 has been very good. Sprint has a good arrangement with Google but i only use GV for VVM. If you skip the first prompt, tell it never to dial with GV, and then tell it to act as your VVM and confirm, it very much blends into the phone.
I get a notification with info and the option to play from the notification drop down. The VM plays via the dialer (stock dialer used to call/answer). You can delete it/call back etc via the dialer. I almost never find myself in the GV app at all, and when i do its the VM folder and looks basically like any other vmail. My sprint VM message plays for the caller too.
At first i was very angry i couldnt get the sprint VVM app, but after about a day or 2 i was actually liking the integration into the dialer. Now i think id be bothered now by the Sprint VVM app.
As others pointed out my VM's follow me to other devices or just about any browser as well. Additionally its very easy to download your messages for backup (altho i think you can download them via the sprint VVM too).
If i have the time later maybe ill post creen shots of the step by step setup to get things the way i have it.

I just tried it, I may be doing something wrong, but it is not working for me... Hoping OP of that thread can assist me.
Update, April 5, 2019: you can now make calls with Google voice.
1. Open the app, tap the phone icon then the dialer on the bottom right.
2. If it doesn't work, go into settings by tapping lines at top left. Make sure you are set to receive calls, disconnect hangouts if you haven't.
3. Make sure you set your preference to use Wi-Fi to make calls.
4. Restart app, go back to step one.

****OLD METHOD****
I'm making this post because this worked surprisingly well. Call clarity is near perfect and there's little to no delay whatsoever. To be honest, I wasn't expecting this to work well on this tablet let alone any other ones.
Google recently revamped Google Voice and Hangouts which all but combined the two apps into one. If you already have a Google account, you can easily sign up to use Google voice here. To use this feature you'll need to do so. Once you've done so, you're literally a few steps away from receiving and making phone calls. Also install Activity Launcher if you haven't already done so.
1) It's not required, but it is helpful to download and install Google Contacts.
2) Download and install Google Voice (once you've gotten a Voice number). You can now send SMS messages to anyone with a regular phone number and you can also receive texts from any phone number. You can also now setup voicemail which will then allow anyone to call your Voice number and leave you a voice message. In the next steps, you'll be able to answer those phone calls and even make them!
3) Download and install Google Hangouts and Hangouts Dialer. No additional sign-up is needed. You should be automatically signed in when opening Hangouts. In Hangouts tap the three bars at the top left and select settings and tap your account if signed in.
4) Scroll to the Google Voice section and select the option to 'receive incoming phone calls.' Otherwise incoming calls will be directed to the voicemail you just setup in the Voice app. Voice will transcribe the message for you, if able to do so and you can listen to and read them right from the Voice app. In the next option, if you so desire, you can select to receive messages in Hangouts that are sent to your Voice number.
5) Using Activity Launcher, tap top left, all activities, scroll to 'Media Storage' and select the 'Hangouts Call' as your ringtone (It should currently be set to none). If you select the 'default ringtone' no sound will be played so you have to select the Hangouts tone. (If you figure out how to add more ringtones, please post a reply with the steps to do so. I've not gotten that far or even know if you can do so).
6) Now have someone call your new number. You should be able to answer the call on your tablet. Now open hangouts and select the dialer. You can now call any number you want, for free, provided you're on a good WiFi network.
You can setup the apps up to your liking, but you won't be able to get calls through the Voice app anymore. In older versions, Voice had it's own dialer, or used the one built into your phone/device if there was one. In the Voice app you can also decide if you want voicemail messages forwarded to your Gmail.
Note: If you have a working telephone number already, you can link it through Voice. I currently don't have cellular service and haven't for some time so you'll have to figure out that part on your own

You'll have to look for the thread on how to install Google Play and the services for it. Once you do that, you can install Hangouts and Hangouts dialer. This works on both the fire 7 and HD 8.
When you sign up for a Google voice number, it asks for a real number for verification and to link the account to. Once you setup the Google Voice app, you can delete the linked number.
Thanks for the tips. I am now able to place and receive calls using the Hangouts apps. Call volume is very low even though call volume setting is near max. Would be interested in link to last Google Voice app that did have built in dialer.
Hello, have the 2018 Hd 8. Installed Play, additional 3 Google apks. YouTube working, hijacklauncher 2.1, Google now launcher, Play store working. I installed Hangouts (minus voice because it's Canada). Just trying to use app to app text and call, this hd 8 is my daughter's. She can call me and text me from the Hangouts app but when I call her or text it doesn't notify even if I have her Hangouts open. When I end call it then shows missed on her Fire. Settings in Hangouts are all on for ring and notification. All Hangouts app permissions are granted. I installed on her old Asus tablet and it rings with same settings. Am I missing some steps, is this blocked now from Google on Fire?

Amazon commented out the code in the Settings APK so you can't set a default sms messenger. I still haven't been able to figure that out, but I have somewhat of an idea.
I have similar issue, got to load the play store on fire hd 8 (8th generation), but using hangouts to dial numbers returns an error "unexpected account error please try again". Sms, voicemail, videocalls to hangout contacts works.

Maybe try an older version? I'll have to look at the date of the OP and compare it with the release at the time. Also I'm pretty sure you have to have 1 a Google voice number and 2 link that number to a real working one.

Thanks for the suggestion, will definitely give a try. I do have a real number linked to the google voice one. I've had been a user of google voice for a while and like all its benefits, but just acquired the fire hd 8 (2018). Will report back if sucessful.

Thanks Dragonfire1024, I followed your advise and now i can make calls. Ended up using version 25.0.197085453. I also followed directions on thread to use the activity launcher, but got no way to receive calls. Either way i'm happy that i can make calls at least. Maybe you can share an idea how to make it work.
The same happens to me... No I can call but can't receive calls. Any solution?

In Hangouts settings, there should be toggles. One for messages one for calls. If there isn't anymore, there may not be, download Google voice go into settings and select the option over there. You may need to have both installed. Also make sure you have hangout dialer. And remember you have to have a working, verifiable telephone number to link to Google voice. This needs to be done only once ever so if you don't pay the bill you can keep the Google number for life so long as the linked number isn't recycled.

The issue is that Google Voice is not available in Spain... So I can't get there....

I checked and I do have hangouts toggles (tried on and off) and i have installed google voice and hangout dialer., plus I have a working phone linked to it. forgot to mention, i have a second tablet that has android as native os but not rooted and everything works as it should. Just on the amazon hd8 is that i can get it to work yet.

Well I tried different versions of hangouts and that didn't seem to make receive calls to work. I also tried various versions of google account manager and google service framework, and just got to have the contacts now available when searching in hangouts. While i was testing, noticed that seems that google services are doing sync during a fixed time, due to i don' t get any notification of past texts until i open the app or reopen it. Google mail works, but also with delay. Maybe someone that have hangouts working full on the amazon hd 8 (8th generation) can share the version of hangouts, google account manager and google service framework that is being used or if there is a way to check a setting.
Decided not to go the Nexus/Pixel route..... I'm quite frankly tired of the insane prices and terrible features on the Google Phones. I've heard good things about the OP7 so decided to take a gamble. So far, I'm loving it.

Try downloading carrier services in play store. You need that to use Google services on a carrier device. If you set up RCS, you'll forget all about hangout, everything's available within Google messages app including video chat.

Can I set my outbound phone number to my Google Voice number in the Google Messaging app? It shows my actual phone number for my device and no one I know, knows it. Heck, even I had to look up what my actual phone number is because I don't ever use it, I always use my Google Voice #

I used voice for 3 years, I don't know if you can still set up voice with your carrier number, but once you do, from what I remember you can set it up to ring your GV, when your number is called. I just checked, it's been a while since I've used GV, but they have updated the services. Find voice amoung the Google services, and you should be able to set it up.

I used Google Voice + Hangouts for SMS and "Chat". For some reason Hangouts will crash when I start typing a SMS. I've already tried to clear storage, re-install the app, check the permissions... everything looks like it should. It won't close on a Hangouts chat, only an SMS chat from within hangouts.

You need to enable the Phone permission.

I think you've misunderstood. The new "Messages by Google app" that supports RCS..... it will only display my device actual phone number and NOT my Google Voice #. As I've been using GVoice since it's inception, no one (not even me) knows my actual Tmobile phone #... only my Google Voice #. I can't get the messages app to display / send / show my Google Voice # when I send an SMS through that app... it will display my device's phone #. I can't see of anyway to change it to "send from my Google Voice#" I've been searching the web and it seems like ALL GVoice users have the same issue and it is a persistent one. I guess until Google decides to allow it, there's no way I can use the Messages by Google app to send Texts, etc.

Thanks! That was it... there was a bunch of permissions NOT selected in Hangouts. Once I enabled them all, no more crashing. Thank you again.
