This Is a How-to that I created after learning the process with help from the freenode #HTC-EVO IRC Channel and on XDA's forums.
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS FROM THESE INSTRUCTIONS, THEY WORKED FOR ME ON 2 DIFFERENT EVO's WITH NO ISSUES.
Start with 2.1 Stock and skip step 1 if you are already rooted with unrevoked3.
1. Root with Unrevoked3. (unrevoked.com)
2. Install Unrevoked Forever. (See the Unrevoked Site for instructions unrevoked.com or use mine)
A. Transfer unrevoked forever.zip to sd card and shut down the phone.
B. Reboot your phone into recovery mode. You can do this by removing your phone's battery, holding down the VOLUME DOWN button, and inserting the battery; at the menu, press VOLUME DOWN to highlight recovery, then press POWER to select it.
C. select the "install zip from sdcard" then "choose zip from sdcard" select the unrevoked-forever.zip and install.
D. Reboot Phone.
E. After your phone starts, shut down phone and start back into HBOOT. You can do this by removing your phone's battery, holding down the VOLUME DOWN button, and inserting the battery;
F. Verify the First line on this screen says "S-OFF"
3. Create Stock Recovery installer and flash to Stock Recovery
A. go to Menu>Settings>System Updates>HTC Software Updates, click "Check Now".
B. Click OK to download the Update. Note, this will not install the update... yet.
C. Once the Download is complete, Choose "Install Later".
D. Use a program called "Root Explorer" or another file browser to transfer the file (/cache/OTA_Supersonic_3.26.651.6-1.47.651.1_releasexxxxxxxxxxxx.zip) to the SD Card.
E. From your computer create stock recovery installer by extracting the OTA zip onto your computer, extract the zip inside of the OTA zip called firmware.zip. Then add the files android-info.txt and recovery.img from the firmware.zip to a zip file called PC36IMG.zip.
F. Put this file onto the SD Card.
G. Reboot your phone into HBOOT. You can do this by removing your phone's battery, holding down the VOLUME DOWN button, and inserting the battery;
H. it will detect the update and ask if you want to update and press VOLUME UP to do it. It will then say update complete and ask if you want to restart the device.
I. press VOLUME UP to restart the device.
4. Install the OTA Update
A. Once the device boots up you can now install the OTA Update, go to Menu>Settings>System Updates>HTC Software Updates.
B. Click "Check Now" and Click OK to download the Update. (if needed).
C. Once the Download is complete, Choose "Install Now".
D. Now let it install the updates and reboot (10-20 mins).
5.Flash to a Custom Recovery to allow rooting.
A. Once your phone has finished loading up with the new update, you will probably want to root your phone with a recovery such as "ClockworkMod".
B. Place the file on your SDcard to replace the one you used before (make a backup of the previous one if you wish to replace the recovery back to stock after rooting).
C. Reboot your phone into HBOOT. You can do this by removing your phone's battery, holding down the VOLUME DOWN button, and inserting the battery;
D. it will detect the update and ask if you want to update and press VOLUME UP to do it. It will then say update complete and ask if you want to restart the device.
E. press VOLUME UP to do so.
6. Root/Install Superuser.
A. Now you will want to "root" your phone by using Superuser 2.3.1.
B. you will want to be sure to use the the Eclair/Froyo version su-2.3.1-ef-signed.zip. (Search XDA for the file)
C. Copy this file to your SD card.
D. Reboot your phone into recovery mode. You can do this by removing your phone's battery, holding down the VOLUME DOWN button, and inserting the battery; at the menu, press VOLUME DOWN to highlight recovery, then press POWER to select it.
E. Select the "install zip from sdcard" then "choose zip from sdcard" select the su-2.3.1-ef-signed.zip and install.
F. Reboot Phone.
7. (Optional) Flash back to stock recovery with the zip as in step 2 be sure to remove.
8. Remove PC36IMG.zip from your SD Card.
9. Enjoy!
10. Any problems should be taken to the #HTC-EVO IRC channel on Freenode.
Does it matter what 2.1 version you are currently running?
I am still on
firmware: 2.1-update1
bband: 1.39.00.05.31
PRI 1.40_003
PRL 60665
Not technically rooted - been more than happy just using Unrevoked(1) to give me s/u permissions on boot-up.
Been waiting for a definitive fool-proof way to get rooted 2.2 on my phone before applying ANY kind of root or OTA. The risk of jacking up my 4G or other issues just hasn't been worth the risk for me.
If you think this will work for me, I'll give it a shot.
Same here. Running the original shipped OS with Unrevoked app for wireless and Titanium. I've been curious about this too.

im coming from stock 2.1, rooted with unrevoked 3, and cannot get unrevoked forever to install because i am on baseband 1.39.00.05.31
does anyone know how to get around this?

How do you know the installation is failing b/c of you bband version? Is it giving you an error message or something?
yea gives me a error message that says its not supported
only basebands currently supported are:

1.39.00.04.26
*
2.05.00.06.10
*
2.15.00.07.28

Well ****. I'm on xxxx.05.31 too. I'll let you know if I figure out a workaround.
Same problem here.
I've tried to go all the way back to toast's part 2 unlocking NAND method, but i cant even go through the adb shell commands. Nothing but "permission denied" at the prompt, which is a $, not a #, su gets permission denied, etc.
I wanted to do that method so that i could get the ENG HBOOT and do the How To Start Over method by witslack but obviously I cant do that either.
At this point i am thinking perhaps my best bet is to take the 1.47 OTA, use unrevoked3 again (since the OTA would effectively undo U3 from the 1.32 software, right?), and then go unrevoked forever, then to one of the stock rooted 2.2 roms like SteelH's version.
Thoughts, anyone?

After searching around, I believe this is your only option. Mine too.
I just want to be sure that the FOTA isn't going to leave me with the bad PRI. When I search for HTC updates, I find FOTA 1.47.651.1 (30.15 MB). Can anyone verify whether or not this will change my PRI from 1.40 to the one that's ****ed up?
I thought that it was the toast method that changes the pri. That's why I was thinking that doing the full unrevoked method would leave it untouched.

I think you're right. I'll repost back my results.
EDIT: Did the 1.47 update (FOTA) just now. Still running 1.40 PRI and now on 2.05.00.06.10 baseband, which is supposedly supported by Forever.

You can flash a new radio before doing unrevoked forever. There's a thread in this forum with the title "[Radios] All EVO Radio & WiMAX Radio versions" that has all of the radio versions.

That's correct, unrevoked doesn't touch the PRI.
Success! Thanks to the Unrevoked, ClockworkMod, and Superuser teams for all their hard work, and thanks to the OP for providing some noob-tastic instructions.

I'm having the same problem did you figure away to do this. I even try down grading the radio and nothing.
DINC help with downgrading
Dont know if benholtz or anyone can assist but I got to step 3-D and there's no file in /cache. Wiped and redownloaded the 2.2 OTA 3 times and nothing stores in that folder after hitting install later.
I have:
DINC w/ 2.1 update 1
ROOOTED with unr3voked 3 and forever
build 1.22.605.2 CL161494
base band 1.00.03.04.06
thanx in advance, friends
So let me just verify something here. I have 2.1 rooted with unrevoked 3 FYI.
If I follow these instructions to step 4, does this mean I'll have the official 2.2 but NOT rooted? If so, I guess then I could run the new unrevoked 3.2 (when they re-release it, lol) to get rooted 2.2.
Ok I answered my own question there but now I'm stuck.
Here's what I did.
1. Started with 2.1 rooted with unrevoked 3, like I mentioned.
2. Ran unrevoked forever and have S-OFF. I verified this.
3. Flashed a stock recovery (since I had clockwork obviously).
4. Installed 2.2 OTA.
5. Verified 2.2 and it is running and of course non-root.
6. Since I still have S-OFF, I go to install clockwork from link off the unrevoked forever wiki. It says do you want to apply the update, I hit yes, it does it and says it's good. I reboot and it still says supersonic at the top. I've tried this over and over.
WTF? Why won't clockwork recovery install? I have S-OFF...
Cool!!! This is what I was looking for.
I love my stock ROM (2.2) and rooted with Unrevoked3 mainly for the wifi tether.
So, I was really trying to figure out a way to get OTA with my phone rooted and this tutorial here did the job! It was a pain in the ass to try to get PRI and radio updated manually, they actually broke my 4G connection.
I just finished installing the OTA update and the phone works great.
So here is a few pointers for other guys looking to do the same:
1. I was unable to find my OTA update in /cache/OTA... so I found this post which list the latest OTA update for download:
(unfortunately, I'm a noob here and cannot post links, lol... so just search google for "Update HTC EVO 4G To Latest Version [OTA And Manual Method]"
2. I just re-run Unrevoked3 and it seemed to have worked.
Thanks!
Just to follow up. The procedure I did above worked fine. My phone has the new OTA and it is now rooted.
Cant fine OTA_supersonic...... upgrade in cache
When i goto my cache, it says its an empty folder. Do i need special permissions to open up the cache? I am using ES File Explorer and also tried super manager. I know its there somewhere on my EVO..... I did a search for all the zip files on the phone/card and also did not find it.
Thanks,
Kent
After receiving my second Hero I had noticed something weird about its software version... From what I remembered, it started with 2.27 on the last one I had and raised my curiosity/concern. I had heard about a root patch that was being sent out OTA by Sprint and after a little digging found the extremes that everyone was going through to achieve a successful root. The most common was to flash back .6 then to .5 which doesn't have the patch. I spent over an hour trying to find ANY copy of the 2.31.651.6 update and could not find anything. Then there where methods using the SDK which I'm sure could work, however the bootloader was a b!tch to access. I thought it would be entertaining to see If Sprint's new .7 root patched could be broken simply by the android market and third party developers; no use of Odin, unrevoked, HTC sync, no messing with debugging, not custom 2.31.651.7 (careful) and absolutely no flash backs! So here it is... enjoy.
All you will need ready is:
1).zip file of whichever OS you plan to flash. (I prefer the cm build's).
2)Rom Manager from the market (work's well with clockwork and cm).
3)Heroroot101.apk (Don't remember if it's on the market or third party).
4)NANDROID!!!!!!
All you do is run heroroot010 and push the root me button.
Reboot your phone and let it fully boot back up (give it a minute or two).
Turn it off and boot into recovery by holding down volume button and power.
I'll be damned there is a recovery image now by darchstar.
At this time there is no need to wipe just choose and flash rootme.zip
When you reboot you will see that sprint know's you're rooted already and wants to update you... This is fine.
Open Rom Manager, flash Clockwork (replacing darchstar) reboot into recovery mode and flash your new OS (DON'T FORGET TO WIPE).
I like your detailed method, but SuperOneClick was really easy too.
Install HTC Sync (v2 for Hero)
Enable USB debugging
Open SOC
Click Root
Plug in phone when prompted
Wait a bit.... then done.
There really is alot of outdated information on these forums. All versions of the stock ROMs can be rooted one way or another.
Above is two possible solutions
I agree with porkrinds but y would you replace Darchstar Recovery its the best IMO Thanks Darchstar

Hey man I just used your little posts instructions to root my Wife's hero (my evo is already rooted)
I can't believe how easy that was thanks so much everything appears to be working I have superuser authority and am going to try flashing a new rom momentarily
Hey Guys,
I just picked up the HTC Sensation 4G. Bought from Bell Canada in Canada, and unlocked, running on Rogers.
I S-Off'd it, I think. When I boot into fastboot (Cold Boot holding down the Volume Down) it says Revolutionary at the top, and it does say S-OFF.
I'm reading through the thread on how to root, but I don't want to flash any new ROMS. Does anyone know if SuperOneClick would work? Is there any risk of bricking?
Many Thanks,
Follow the S-OFF guide, step 3 (I think) is about rooting
Flash the SU zip and CWM zip and you are good to go.
Followed the guide, got confused by some misleading/confusing grammar and sentence structures, but finally got it rooted and su'd.
Thanks for responding!
Root HTC Sensation (O2 UK) with SuperOneClick
Just trying to root my HTC Sensation (on O2 UK), using SuperOneClick V2.3.3.0 – I enable usb debugging, unmount the SD card and then hit “root” it completes ts checks for existing Shellroot and Root both say False.
It then starts to shell root when i actually clicked root, it gets right to the end and says “remounting /system with read-only access…” – it offers to test, i click yes, it then advises its sending an SU to phone and i may need to allow it, but nothing happens on phone.
I go in apps and "superuser" icon is there but on pressing it, it force closes immediately. On restart it disappears completely as if i have done a shell root but i definitely pressed "root"??
Help please

There is literally no information in this posting that someone can use to help you.
Blackknightavalon's direction to the SDK webpage is about as helpful of a reply as you can expect to solicit with the information you have provided.
This is like going to a car forum, and saying " I have a blue camaro. It won't start. I tried turning the key. Help please"
What commands are you trying to run through adb?
What errors are you getting, if any?
What do you see when you type "adb devices"
What operating system are you running on the computer you are trying to connect from?
Have you turned on "usb debugging" in the options menu on the phone?
There are a whole lot of things that can be your problem, and we'd love to help, but we can't help you if you don't tell us what's wrong.
Doubtless someone else will get back to you before I get a chance to, since my time is very limited these days online, but posting some more information about your problem will elicit a response that may actually help you.
Best of luck!

Make sure you have current adb drivers for your phone. It will show android composite in device manager. Fastboot will show fastboot device. Seeing a yellow question mark is bad.
Make sure your pathing is set up right.
Typing "adb devices" and if you see your device. If so you're ready to roll.
I usually get fastboot errors like this when I don't have drivers installed right.

I get Error Message with ADB
Hey guys, so I perm rooted with S-OFF my mytouch 4g slide, with theunlockr.com youtube video and guide using revolutionary. then I attempted to install a ROM with ROM MANAGER, and it got stuck on the splash/loading screen. After some searching I found out that this meant that I could have potentially BRICKED the phone, so I followed theunlockr.com's guide to UNROOTING the phone, and it worked, I flashed the original stock tmobile rom, and it loaded fine, I tried to start the whole process again, but now I get stuck in the very beginning, trying to get TEMP root, I start the fr3vo exploit like the guide stated, but then i keep getting error messages on the command line prompt saying that there is an error with ADB, then when I power the phone with volume down and power, the revolutionary is no longer on the top of the screen, but it still says SHIP S-OFF. Does that have to do anything with my problem? is there a way to GET S back to ON, so I can start the process over? or am I better off having S off??? I installed ROM MANAGER and tried to flash a recover image thinking that having S off would allow me to do this, but I get error messages saying there are problems with the permissions. the web site for the guide I used to root is this one incase anyone wants more details into what I did, any help would be greatly appreciated. theunlockr.com/2011/09/09/how-to-permanently-root-and-gain-s-off-on-the-t-mobile-mytouch-4g-slide-revolutionary-method
Use perm root method. Myself I flashed oneclick in recovery, but you can follow the guide the perm root part.
Btw rom manager supports flashing of the new cwm only. I checked the roms in rom manager they aren't supported. You have to go to the cm7 thread here and download and flash cm7 from recovery.
Just redo root process and install cwm from rom manager. Then go to the dev section and flash your favorite rom in recovery. My sig has directions on how to do everything.
Also if you're having permissions error use root explorer on the rom manager apk make sure it has execute checked. Also I think rom manager has a fix permissions button. Its never worked for me.
S off will allow flashing of cwm. However you need to be rooted to flash cwm threw rom manager. My sig has a guide on installing cwm without being rooted.

Thanks for the QUICK reply, but I looked at the guide, and it stated I have to have recovery installed, BEFORE I do the perm root method, but I dont have recovery, when I do HBOOT, and I try to boot into recovery, I get a red exclamation mark on the screen and I have to end up taking out the battery. Thats why I was wondering if having S OFF from the beginning now is what is messing me up when I am trying to ROOT again, I mean, I am doing the same steps.... just now I get errors when I try to do the TEMP root step... so I cant continue... and I cant get ROM MANAGER to flash a recovery image... is there a guide or steps someplace that can guide me to root the MT4G slide already having S off?
I found the problem myself, I had to enable USB Debugging.
I had USB debugging enabled.... hmmmm you made me doubt myself... I guess I will try it again, since I flashed stock rom again all settings were reverted... so I cannot VERIFY I had USB debugging on, but I was sure I did... I will try again and post... I am reflashing the stock rom like 5 times a days trying to root again =(
wait... cwest31, you had which same problem? because I was writing about 2 problems: about booting into recovery with S off, but no recovery image (hence I got red exclamation mark), and trying to get ROM MANAGER to flash a recovery image on my phone since I have S off already, but I get error messages (problem with permissions)

What he said.
Also ROM MANAGER WILL NOT WORK UNLESS ROOTED. Get rooted then try flashing the image. The compendium also has step by step guides using terminal emulator once rooted

Also I want you op and the other one to be clear on what s off is and root.
Getting S OFF allows unsigned zips to be flashed. This means you can now flash roms and root. Without s off you cannot root, rom, kernels. S OFF is not root.
Root is gaining admin rights over your phone. this allows programs that require access to the root files to have access to them. ROM Manager, titanium backup, drocap, setcpu will be granted access to the root files and programs which unrooted phones would not be granted access .
This can be a reason why you two are having trouble using rom manager unrooted. Rom manager cannot access the files it needs

WTF!!! whats the front camera for then?! and QIK sucks, not all my friends are on tmobile... i was even more upset when the HTC AMAZE has a version of GTALK that does allow for video chat straight out of the box!!! this is my main push to wanting to root... thanks for letting me vent! lol and thanks for all your great info

Hello Evo Shift forums! Atrix user here, trying to help my brother out with his Evo Shift. He has wanted root for a while, but did the 2.3 OTA update which (the last time I was on these forums) did not have perm root, and there was not a known way to downgrade to 2.2 and "unlock" the bootloader.
I've spent some time on your forums over this weekend, and if I am to understand correctly, there is a way I can downgrade my brother's phone and get CM7/MIUI on it for him. I'd like to confirm the steps in the process before I proceed, as I am getting conflicting information on the process.
Here's what I think needs to happen:
1. Hit up this thread, and grab the misc.img file, the RUU for 2.2, and the temp root access script for 2.3.
2. Gain temp root on the device, confirm that I have root access.
3. Using ADB, write the misc.img file to "/dev/block/mmcblk0p17"
4. Turn on USB debugging, set the USB type to Charge Only.
5. Run the 2.2 RUU and wait until it finishes.
6. The phone is now running 2.2 stock.
7. Root the phone (temp or full).
8. Go to the CM wiki page on the Shift, and download the engineering HBoot.
9. Using ADB, push the HBoot to the phone, write it to "/dev/block/mmcblk0p18"
10. Reboot.
11. Install ROM Manager, have it install CWM Recovery, then have it download CM7/MIUI, and allow it to reboot the phone and install the chosen ROM.
12. Beer.
DONE.
Before I attempt this, I would love your feedback on the process so that I can make sure I'm set before working on my brother's phone. If it was my phone I'd dive right in, but seeing as its not mine, I'd like to avoid possible bricks, or the possibility that I do a ton of work and wipe his phone, just to find out that it doesn't work.
Any and all input is appreciated! Thank you in advance.

This thread will be easier than doing it manually as its a script based on the Scaryghoul thread you posted
I already wrote this here + more:

Thank you very much. I will gather up the files and get this done later today / tomorrow.
I appreciate the help!
