Hello,
At the moment I'm working on a new version of SayMyName Dessert. It's my first app (but it's already on the Android Market for more than a year ) and I just can't stop developing it. Mostly, I blame my users for that. You send me feature-requests, bug-reports, good feedback, bad feedback... even donations!
Currently there are two versions of SayMyName available at the Android Market. One for Cupcakes, and one for Donuts and beyond.
With the upcoming version of SayMyName, I want to merge those versions, fix old, very annoying bugs and add some often requested features.
Why I'm telling you that? Because I need even more feedback, more testers, more contributers D) and some guys who translate my app into various languages.
So, if you want to help me, please download the attached .apk and give me some feedback / requests / whatever comes to your mind. Just leave a reply here at xda or send me a mail. (tomtasche AT gmail)
Thank you very much
Tom
P.S.: If you want to try the old, buggy version of SayMyName, feel free to search the Android Market for "SayMyName Dessert".
edit:
I forgot to mention what this app is for.
Official market-description:
"Want to know who's calling you without looking at your phone? SayMyName reads out loud the name saved in your adressbook and tells you who's calling.
- reads SMS, GMail and K9-Mail too
- very customizable
- discreet mode
- Locale Plug-in
- open-source
- supports non-latin languages too
See website for changelog, etc."
edit:
Changelog:
- reads nicknames!
- fixes, fixes, fixes.
- much more
- mute gestures
- read number-/mail-type (custom labels supported too!)
- auto translate messages (enable "translate")
- improved widget
- fixes
- pause music during speech on phones with Android 2.2
- sk, cs and de translations by David K. (thanks! )
- supports people who can't find TTS Extended in Android Market / don't have access to Android Market
Planned features in near future:
- more translations (any volunteers?)
- bluetooth (maybe I found somebody who can help me! )
edit:
If you want to help translate, download this file and translate the text between the tags:
Code:
<string name="...">TRANSLATE THIS</string>
Return the translated file to me afterwards.
Thank you very much
Tom
PS: Please let me know if you want me to mention your name / mail-address / website.
Shall report back tomorrow. Used to love this app!

Thanks! Tell me if you miss something.
I just tried the app for SMS notifications, but it gets interrupted by the notification. I'd like the notification to come first, followed by the announce and then the message. As it is now half the announcement gets killed by the notification.
I tried setting both Reading break and speech delay to 5 (seconds?), but the announcement started immediately anyway.
The app also seems to open a TTS-channel on start, causing noticeable hiss for a couple of seconds.
And the locale-plug-in, is it a separate download? Couldn't see it in Tasker even if I force-stopped it.
Your app seems to perform all the functions I want from TTS-notifications, now I only have to wait for the engine to not sound like a broken record in my language.

Nice, you found a bug! Little workaround until I upload the fix: set the speech delay in SayCaller Settings.

Locale Plug-In is made for Locale 1.0 (beta). I didn't update it yet, because I thought nobody would use it.
I'll note that on my ToDo-list, thanks!

Which Android version performs on your phone? Everything under 1.6 has a REALLY bad voice:

Tasker has Locale plug-in support. I would like to use Tasker to enable and disable your program whenever I place my phone in the car dock.

Yup, that's the voice.... Froyo (CM6) on Nexus. Truth be told I don't really like the english voice either, it's just far too synthetic compared to some of the other TTS-engines out there:

Unfortunately I'm not responsible for the voice. It comes from Android, but the AT&T sample is very impressive!
I've uploaded another update at the first post, which fixes speech-delay.
Thanks
Tom
edit:
By the way, you can change the voice in "Speech settings" (linked in SayMyName). Change the "Engine" to "Pico TTS" and you'll get a female voice.

I do realise that. I'll just have to sit still and wait until either google, or someone else grants us a more pleasant engine.

Excellent.
A slightly more convoluted feature request: Do you think it would be possible to change the TTS-language based on which contact a text message comes from? Say for instance if the contacts had TTS=en_US or TTS=sv_SE or any other preferred language in the notes-section?
The reason for this request is of course that I receive messages in different languages depending on the contact, so if I just decide on a language half the time it'll sound even worse than necessary.

Thanks for the hint, but it doesn't seem to work. Probably because I don't use EN/FR/DE/ES.

Now I'm off till Friday. Thanks for testing! Keep reporting.
When I tried the old version from the market the notifications didn't pause the music or podcasts so the text reading was down out by the audio. Using btunes for music and google listen for podcasts. Any progress on this?

Can't get any of these to work on my x10 mini (Android 1.6). Old version from Market works fine but when I install these and try to open them I get a popup saying "The requested item could not be found".
Any idea what's going on Tom?
EDIT: Tried the earlier .6.3 and it seems the app is trying to search the Market for "pname:com.google.tts" doesn't find anything matching that though and just sticks on that screen
EDIT 2: Couldn't find the files on Market but the newest version of it is here:

Sorry for the rambling post lol
Wasnt sure exactly where to post this. The new app from Vlingo, "Vlingo InCar" is in beta, and only available through the market for sprint customers during the beta period.
Could one of you kind evo users post up the apk for the rest of the android community? Thanks!
Best of luck with it! I love it so far!

When you put it in "InCar" mode you can say "Hey Vlingo" to wake it up and use voice commands.
FYI, this works on the VZW with the Incredible with no problem..

Also, it works! The new Google program is about 1/10 in getting what I say right.
Vlingo is (so far) about 5/5. I like that if it doesn't find what you're saying locally, it does a (very fast) internet search.
any word on making it work for other android devices? ie the g-1

Works great on the dinc. I appreciate the share!
thank you so much for sharing this app with the community. I have been fooling around with it for half an hour or so and it does some pretty awesome things. LOVE the in-car feature, completely hands-free and works perfectly, even reads and writes text messages for me. "hey vlingo"
Edit: Forgot to add, very accurate, even with names
Wow, the incar mode is really REALLY good. Anybody know how to have it differentiate between a contacts home and cell when sending a text message?
Say call blah blah mobile. That should work.

Google's voice search sucked at recognizing what I was saying for the first week or so, but then it got a lot better. I'm wondering if it learns your voice or something. Vlingo, on the other hand, worked well on day one. However, while it does a good job of recognizing what I am saying, it doesn't always give me the results I wanted. For instance, movie times never come up even though that's one of the examples the app shows, and it displays my exact phrase correctly (movie times near #####). It just says "No answer found". And I've also had trouble getting it to dial the right phone number for a contact. It's like it ignores when I say "mobile."
I'm having the same problem. It ignores when I say "mobile" after the contacts name. My g/f is getting irritated with the text to landline messages that repeat "test" lol
Is it necessary to install the standard Vlingo app before installing the incar pack?
I´ve been trying to download the installer but i still cant find it, it´s not in the market either.
It would be much if I ask to share the installer?

? It's in the second post of this thread.
anyway to successfully have this running in the background with the in-car? Currently it seems that the program has to be on main screen for me to say "Hey Vlingo" and it wakes...
Plus..too bad I cant say Jarvis to have it wake up
Instead of 'mobile' try saying 'cell'.

Right now the best way is to make two contacts for the person and label one cell and one home after the name. Best workaround at the moment.

Yeah, I went ahead and did that the other day, but thanks! Hopefully that will get sorted.
It would be nice if you could ask it to use your GV # by default as well.
i wonder if there is any way to train a contact that it gets wrong every time. Wifes name is tricky and unless i use her last name first it misses it every time.
I wanted an application that could do this but all I could find was the one from blueAnt which only works with their specific bluetooth device...
You could use Tasker and use this profile - price looks high but it's VERY powerful once you know what you're doing.
Comes with a trial mode for around seven days.
+1 for Tasker. Brilliant app.
I have my 'in car' profile set to read texts - on text receipt it pauses the music player, then reads the senders contact name, and then the body of the text. Awesome.
i was planning on getting the blueant Q1 (just found it for $25). are you saying it won't work with handcent in reading a txt message?
edit: forget it...answered my own question by going to their site. "Hear text messages read aloud on your Q1 when connected to an Android device with our Android application."
What about the vlingo application. It has an email and sms reader that reads the message out loud when activated, but I haven't managed to get it to read the message through the Bluetooth headset

SMS Speak
Just stumbled across this thread looking for something else. But thought I'd chime in. I use SMS Speak (the paid one, not the free one - two different companies/products), and it works great. I can get incoming texts and reply, all orally. I'm curious about the other products mentioned, though...

Hey guys,
I was curious if anyone has an app that can read Google hangouts aloud for driving purposes. The few I have tried (for sms) dont seem to work.
Thanks.
Sorry if this should have gone in questions part of forum. Please move if needed.
not a soul huh?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1548959
tasker works on my stock 4.4.2 for sms via google hangouts(with root and gravitybox and other stuff)
had to put a 2s wait before initializing TTS, otherwise you'll get a error - TTS timeout waiting for initialization
haven't tried it with non-sms google hangouts
EDIT: someone seems to make it work via looking at the sqlite db that google hangouts uses

I use Enhanced SMS and Caller ID. Works great with Hangouts texts - can ask you if you want it read, then read it, then ask you if you want to reply, and send you reply for you. Completely hands free, and can set it to only work when connected to headset/bluetooth if you want. Been using it for years. Developer is responsive and continually improving. Highly recommended. He also does subsets of the functions in different apps, but I have only used the main one:

Hi all, convert back to Android after a couple of years on Windows Phone. Missing Cortana and it's ability to read texts to me, make call handsfree etc etc.
I have found a few apps that read texts on the phone speaker, but can't find anything that works through the car Bluetooth with the sound coming over the car speakers.
Does anyone know an app that will do this please? I spend a lot of time on the car and the lack of this feature is an issue.

I have that installed but it doesn't have the same features for the car as the Windows version has.
You can't dial a number on the car Bluetooth and do voice control from there.
And again, it's not available officially in Australia.
Thanks anyway

How did you go with this? If your still trying things you could try smart connect. It's a Sony app but I have it installed on my mate 9 and so far it works the same. You can set up "events" so when your mate 9 connects to a certain device it will perform certain tasks, one of them being read texts. You can also have it turned the feature off when it disconnects.
I found you can use Tasker with various scripts to mimic the Cortana on Windows actions. But I just haven't had time to explore it. I am using "SMS, my Car and me" to read out messages. When I get some time I will have a look at your suggestion . Thank you for posting it here.
