Having failed totally with application of numerous kinds of screen protector (bubbles, curse the bubbles), could anyone recommend a stumblingidiot proof one?

Yeah yeah its scratch resistant, myn's got loads of scratches on it, and a big ass dint in the screen. Well not big about 2mm long and about 1mm deep. Rub toothpaste on your screen, sounds wierd, but it protects it and makes your screen smoother to your fingers
Wonder how many people will get the toothpaste out now. POST WHAT FLAVOUR WORKED FOR YOU! I actually not kidding, it works.

Screen toughness

Ok, so I decided to be brave, well kinda. I have to send my mt4g back for a warranty replacement so I decided to see how scratch resistant the screen is. I first took the edge of the metal micro usb charging wire and tried scratching the screen with that, didn't work. I then went and took my keys held one key and started scratching it against the screen (like you would sharpen a knife) nothing no scratches. Tried with harder pressure... still nothing.. then took the whole set of keys and swirled them around the screen to simulate them being in your pocket bumping around.. I put a pretty good amount of pressure.. and still nothing! It did scratch the chrome bezel a little around the screen it did not make a single mark on the screen. For not being gorilla glass the glass on the mt4g is pretty tough. I was impressed I couldn't scratch the screen... I was just trying to see how well it would hold up in a everyday situation like having it in your pocket with your keys. I just tried again hacking at the screen with a key, harder than any other time before and still not a damn mark!

From what I was reading it's not gorilla glass but it is a high tempered glass. I really tried to scratch this thing with a key though. I continued trying even after this post. Still haven't been able to make a mark on the screen with a key.. and I'm not being delicate by no means.

Glass is pretty tough. And metals such as keys won't scratch it as its much softer than glass.
I don't remember much from geology class but there's a few rocks that can actually scratch glass.

graffixnyc thanks for providing us with actual BRAVE data lol guess we can rest easy now. I always knew it was using high tempered glass and was scratch resistant just keep in mind it doesn't mean its scratch proof
Yeah, I wouldn't take it and slide it across the sidewalk on its face but its good to know that its pretty tough and that having your keys in your pocket or something like that wont scratch your screen. I honestly don't see a point in a screen protector for this phone after this. I mean anything that's tough enough to scratch the screen would probably rip through a screen protector.
I tried really hard to scratch it with the keys and nothing, even after this I kept trying and no dice. I'm pretty sure sand or something like that could probably scratch up the screen but its good to know in average situations your screen is safe.

this is sorta on topic...while the screen may not scratch very easy...the damn thing shatters with the smallest drop it would seem
was just at my local tmobile store and while i was there i was playing with a g2 while waiting for my paper work and next to it was a guy looking at a mytouch 4g...well we started talking about how good the phone was...turns out he had just bought one and was waiting for the girl to come from the back and give it to him
so myself and the other dude walk to the counter together talking about the phone...i grab my paper work and as i do the girl goes to hand the customer the phone and she drops it on the counter and the screen just shattered from top right edge inwards...was pretty gruesome...it was a fall of maybe a foot to a foot and a half
im pretty sure that phone had to have a weak spot or something in the glass...cause there is no reason that screen should shatter like that from a foot drop...needless to say the store manager saw what had happen and told the girl to get the customer a new phone from the cabinet
i can say now though im going to keep a tighter grip on my phone from now on
Lol freek91 that's another thread of its own. But believe it or not I saw first hand like you how weak it is as I saw my friend drop it from his lap and thing shattered badly but it worked. I read similar feedback online that's the reason I am very anal about getting firm grip always and wasted $50 on case...

if you drop the device, there is great chance to crack or even shatter the screen, and moreover, if you slide it over the surface of concrete, I'm sure the silicate/siliconate will have a great chance to scratch your screen.
The point is: take a tight grip of your device!
broke my screen, replaced it for $30.
Touchscreen is easily broken due to stiff frame.
Using TPU case makes it almost unbreakable....drooped in case several times from approximately 5ft onto concrete with no damage.
Get TPU case...run about $5 and look good

I'm on my 4th one, due to the SF vs. SO issue, and my first one's screen got scratched in spite of being in the babying period. Not in a bad spot, but 2 clear small scratches that would be a problem if in the visible part of the screen.
So I didn't find the screen to be scratch resistant (maybe the SF and SO are different), so when I got one with a good screen, I put a protector on it. Which helps with fingerprints, too, so that's a win.
I wish it was gorilla glass. I had the Vibrant for 14 days and it really seemed to have a strong, scratch resistant screen (and, dare I say it, a vibrant screen).
Just another data point.

[Q] Minor scratches on screen, will toothpaste help?

OK, so today I threw my Incredible (AMOLED if it matters at all) into my backpack and some keys in there scratched it a little bit. The scratches are not too deep, and you can't feel them or anything, so I was hoping there might be a way to fix it. I looked around a little bit and saw that toothpaste can help for getting scratches out of things like CD's and such. Has anyone tried this on their phone? I don't think anything bad would happen, but I don't really know...
Also, I know that I should have bought a screen protector, so please don't remind me about that.
'Getting scratches out' sounds like a bit of a oxymoron. You don't have something IN your screen, a scratch is more like a bit of surface screen missing.
I can't see why toothpaste would harm the screen. Just don't get the phone wet, turn it off, clean up afterwards, etc.
Really can't see how it would help either...
I have never heard of using toothpaste to fix scratches, but since the scratches are not to deep I try this product that has done wonders it is called apple sauce and was originally made to fix iPod scratches. Look it up on amazon.
If this helped please press the thanks button
Yes! It works well, rub it in tiny little circles starting in the center of the screen and working your way out. BUT BE CAREFUL. don't push hard ar all, and don't do the same part more than 2 or 3 little "circles" or you may destroy the screen. if you do it right though, it should work fine.

What do you mean "destroy the screen"? How easily can I accidentally do this? I don't want it to get worse!
They say you can do it on CD's it acts like a polish. I think it all depends on the surface of the screen and what kind of metirial it is made up of.
Good luck though!
Vaseline. lol
Yes, it will probably work since toothpaste is the same as a car polish in general

Mustard works better than toothpaste. It turns into glass when you use it to remove scratches on your phones screen. If you rub it on your face every night before going to bed you'll grow a proper manly beard too. Really, there's no limit to the things you can do with mustard with it's amazing properties.*
*All of the above is patently untrue in the same way that turning lead into gold is pure fiction. Toothpaste contains mild abrasives. Would you use sandpaper on your screen?

Nice! I tried the mustard, and it looks like it worked! My screen looks brand new! Also, I think I can already see stubble after just one night!!! The only problem is now my pillow is stained yellow...
Anyways, I thought that the toothpaste helped because of the slight abrasiveness of it...?
There are products here in the UK made under the Duraglit brand as Brasso and Silvo. These are metal polishes, but are also available as a cotton wad roll impregnated with the stuff. I do not know if they are sold in the USA, but there may be something similar from US manufacturers. As their name suggests they are made to clean and polish brassware and silverware.
It is a very fine abrasive suspension, but it also contains ammonia to remove any tarnish, and white spirit to act as a lubricant. They are quite good at removing scratches from watch glasses etc., by gently cutting into the surface, down to the level of the scratch.
On touch screen devices, the touch screen sensitive layer lives above the screen glass, but under a plastic protective layer. It will be this top layer that you have scratched. The product above or something similar may work, but check that the white spirit does not attack the protective plastic layer.
As mentioned above small, circular movements, a little at a time may work. If you cut through the protective layer, you are in trouble.

Nice to see people getting into the spirit of things Anyway, i hope you find a solution that works. I personally might be tempted to ask the manufacturer to replace the digitizer, as long as the cost wasn't too prohibitive. I tried changing one myself on an old phone and it didn't work out too well
Am not sure about what kind of display cover your phone has. But, if it's capacitive or IR and the top layer is glass, take it to the local wrist-watch merchant/repair center and they could fix it for you using H2SO4 and some filler.
Alternatively, you can have the top layer of the touch panel replaced.
And, next time, do use a screen protector. =D

Is it true that tooth paste works like sand paper on glass, does that mean that it contain something harder than glass? I don't have scratch just want to remove paint between my screen protector. Want to know if tooth paste actually micro scratch the glass.

EZGuardZ Screen Protectors?

Has anyone used these screen protectors? They look like they work well, and they're pretty inexpensive on most sites.
And before any of you try saying anything, I searched, and couldn't find anything helpful on these. I even read the threads on screen protectors, but I couldn't find an answrr

I have tried those. For me personally I felt as though the screen protector took away from the "brightness abit and had tendancy to get smudged a little easier than without the protector on. It was easy to put on however and for the simple fact of protecting your screen from scratches I think its a good choice as mine has a little scratch now that I took it off. Lol.

micro scratches?

Is anyone else experiencing micro scratches?
I've baby'd my phone since I got it, never letting the screen touch anything, the pocket I put it in only ever has my phone it in, nothing else, ever.
Just recently after owning the phone for a little over a month now, im noticing micro scratches on the screen.
It's not normally seeable, but if your in a place with bright lighting or outside its pretty noticable and really annoying.
I figured with the gorilla glass on these things It'd wouldnt be an issue to not have a screen protector, especially for someone as careful as me.

on topic : get a a screen protector... a sand grain can successfully scratch u r screen but nails and knifes cannot
My commuter case came with a screen protector, but i've heard they're not the best and that an invisible shield would be better.

Lol this. It sounds freaking ridiculous that something that is sharp/dangerous to us, can't damage the phone, but something we don't even think about can.
Damn Mohs, and his scale.
These phones come with an oleo phobic coating, so some of the micro scratches could be in that as well.
and yeah, dust and sand can contain ground up quartz, sucks.. :/

Really? My Gnex did too, and that felt ALOT better than the straight glass on the HOX. I love this phone, but that's one of the few things I miss about the Nexus
I'm going to try to pickup an invisible shield for it.
I figure that even though the screen protector wont fill in the scratches, the light would reflect off the invisible shield instead of the screen making the scratches less noticeable. Does that make sense?
Yes. I had a few scratches on my sensation, and I put a skinomi screen protector on it, and now you can't see the scratches.

Now I just need to put a screen protector on for the first time ever.
I've heard putting it on in a steamy bathroom makes it easier.

If you would like, ATT puts them on for free in store I'm pretty sure. But the shields are expensive. I've heard some great reviews on skinomi so you could give that a shot. As far as a steamy bathroom, I usually turn on the shower for a little it really does help. Might be a placebo but I've gotten all my screen protectors near perfect.. I'm having too much fun using the phone naked though. Still contemplating getting a screen protector cause it would help with the face grease after talking on the phone.
I should be able to get an invisbleshield for fairly cheap locally.
Or I could order the bodyguardz screens online and get a 2 pack for about the same price as the invisbleshield, but then I have to wait a week.
Has anyone tried toothpaste or something else to remove the scratches? I have been contemplating it but I haven't seen any conclusive answer on what does and does not work.
From what some said, toothpaste works by grinding down the glass to get even with the scratches. Didn't sound like a good idea to me but I am open to suggestions

the toothpaste trick is NOT FOR PHONES.
Don't do it, you'll most likely scratch the **** out of your screen and make it look really foggy.

You could always replace it, lol.

Here a smudge, there a smudge, everywhere a.....

Anyone else noticed that if you do use your Note 10.1 with your finger instead of the stylus, it's smudge city?!??! Compared to my spouse's ipad, it's like night and day. If we both use our tablets for 20 minutes, then turn them off, the ipad shows very few faint smudges, while my note 10.1 looks like grease on top of grease.
What i really want to know is if anyone has found a great screen cover/film that doesn't in any way inhibit the stylus but that is more smudge free than the glass as it comes.
Of course most of the time when the screen is on and bright you don't notice the smudges, but if you go to watch a movie then anytime there's a dark scene the smudges are VERY annoying.
Thanks,
Eric
Well the upside is that with the gorilla glass a simple wipe on the pant leg and all smudges are gone. I have never used an iPad before so cant comment but any Android tablet or phone i have ever used gets filthy pretty fast. We humans are oily creatures.

I don't notice smudges on the glass at all and I rarely use my stylus.
funny, i was noticing how smudge resistant this note is compared to 10 of my other devices lol.
Same here
I also see the smudges everywhere. I just keep a microfiber cloth with me and am constantly wiping it clean. Using the Pen instead does help a lot.

Yes, it does get a lot of smudges. Two things, either matted screen protector or micro fiber cloth will do the job.
Sent from my GT-N8000 using xda app-developers app
Yes i have noticed alot of smudges. I dont use screen protectors but i do use Rainx ( 2-3 coats) on a clean screen and smudges are less and it is a lot easier to get rid of the ones you do get. you will need to coat is every couple of weeks. A couple drops on a rag- Wax on wax off...:fingers-crossed:
You can find it in most auto sections in stores. Been using it a long time and swear by it.
As is in every aspect of life every person has a different constitution of her/his finger grease. So You can't compare another one's iPad with Your 10.1 AND MOST IMPORTANT !!!!! almost all Screens of Tabs and phones are the same gorilla glass.
So why should one screen be more susceptible to finger grease than others if it's always the same glass ?

A piece of cloth designed for cleaning glasses in oneĀ“s pocket will do an excellent job too, one swipe and the GG is clean
i've used rain-x since the old nook color. it doesn't stop streaks, but makes them come off easier. i quit using it after someone said that i could destroy the oiliph-something coating that supposed keep it streak free. but since it doesn't work well i may just go back to the rain-x. and my ipad does get just as smudgy, it's just easier to clean.
Lol if there is a coating on here that is supposed to keep it streak free it isn't working.
Sent from my GT-N8013 using Tapatalk 2
I use the small yellow bottle of rainX for windshields- original glass treatment. and place a couple drops on a rag and wipe in on and wipe it off. repeat 2-3 times and glass is smooth as butter and - for me- alot less smudges- and yes the ones you do get come off alot quicker.
I have used it on every device i have owned and never had issues with coating etc....
Yes a dry rag will work too- but you wont have to use the rag as much if you coat with Rainx. just saying.
Now when it comes to flu-season: get a hand disinfectant liquid, use it always before You tap Your screen and You'll be smudgefree and free of flu :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:
I always use that after i .......... nvm.. just know its like baking soda, used for everything! : D
we don't see things as they are; we see things as we are.
LOL - so the consensus is just that I have very dirty, oily hands! Thanks for that. Well, I "heard" that the ipad glass has an anti-smudge coating, but that was from an i-everything fanboy so who knows. I wondered if our gorilla glass screen was treated differently for some reason because of the stylus. Doesn't sound like it.
I do use a micro-fiber cloth and yes, it does remove the smudges, especially if used in conjunction with a tablet/laptop screen cleaning solution. I just didn't know if someone had a recommendation for a screen film that was anti-smudge, but I didn't really want to use one of those anyway as I'm afraid it would effect smoothness of use with stylus.
Still debating the rain-x idea. Never thought of that. Like the idea - little worried about long term effects.
Okay, I'm going to go wash my dirty, oily hands again now...
FWIW, I have very dry hands which would account form the lack of finger prints. On top of that, I rarely eat junk food. When I did have some chips the other night my screen showed the prints.
