I am attempting to tether 4G to my xbox with wireless tether. I get 4G service but it kicks back and forth between 3G, interrupting my xbox during test.
I would like a more specific 4G signal strength measuring app to find the best location in my apartment to place my cell phone. The 4 bars that sprint provides to measure 4G strength are not specific enough.
Does this app exist?
Or is 4G strength synonymous with normal cell signal strength?
Sidenotes:
I am using a rooted 2.2 Sprint EVO w/ stock firmware
If you have experience tethering 4G to xbox live, please PM me.
I have attempted to tether using Barnacle and Wireless for Root.
Thank you in advance!

Not sure if you do this but I get better 4g signal when I shutdown 3g completely and I believe the network app in the market should help you with signal strength...
I just took a walk around outside my office with a signal strength widget measuring in -dBm. The 4G strength in the status bar seemed to change as the -dBm measurement did not. This leads me to believe these 2 things are not related or my current measuring application is not updating itself frequently. I
I am also in search of ways to optimize packet transmission to reduce latency.. If this is even possible.
If you want to see ur 4g signal strength in real time, turn 4g on, then dial ##33284# (##debug#) and pick wimax engineering. Somewhere near the bottom it will show signal strength.
Hey... I think this thing makes phone calls too!
Woot! Thank you JT! thats what i was after

The EVO is way to slow to tether on the 360 i tried doing it on my halo reach 360 and it was just stuck searching for matches in mw2 and reach

Evo dBm
If you wrap the evo in aluminum foil and replace the hdmi with cat3 and custom build a serial connection, then you can use a serial to cat 3 adapter to plug it into your existing ground start phone system. You will then be able to call your CO and they should be able to answer all these questions for you.

ive noticed that i get a 4g and a 2g icon but wheres the 3g icon? has anyone seened it?
Travling through the middle of nowhere over the last 3 days I've seen, no signal, G, 2G, 3G, & 4G. It's there.
I also have not seen the 3G icon. I drive through the city and would think when I get out if 4G I would at least still be in a 3G area. Wonder if something may be wrong....

Same here but this is the first 4G device I have had and I know for a fact most of my city is covered by 4G. What is also weird is that in areas where I would have 1 or 2 bars with my Vibrant, it is telling me I have full bars worth of 4G with the G2X.
its there in the framwork i checked..
Im just wondering why it doesnt display 3G when its on UMTS... it sticks to 4G all the time...
very strange in the instruction manual it also shows 3g icon!

A lot of this has to do with the fact that T-Mobile's 3G towers == their 4G towers so if you're in an area where all of their towers have been upgraded to HSPA+ you will NEVER show 3G because you're always on a 4G tower. The only time you will show a 3G signal is if you're in an older area where they have pre-HSPA+ upgradeable towers. This is how T-mobile can say they have the biggest 4G network because almost all of their old HSPA/3G equipment has been turned into 4G equipment via software upgrades.
I have had my g2x for about 5 days and all I ever see is 4G or E never 3g. I have been checking in the settings/about phone/status and even when the phone is showing 3-4 bars of 4G it is still on umts. In the exact same location and within a minute or so when checking it with my Vibrant I will have 3 bars of H or 3G and in status it shows as hspda or hspda+. What is that about? I have checked this out at least 6 to 7 times a day and it is always the same only umts on the G2X and Hspda or Hspda+ on the Vibrant. I called CS and they wanted to send out another G2X I reluctantly said yes. I do really like this phone and will try to be patient but the device I have now has multiple issues. I am going to take the stance that this is an isolated case and the new one will be golden!!!

This is true. There's pretty much no need for a '3G' icon. Though, technically, it's debatable whether or not T-Mo's (or any other carriers) offerings right now are actually '4G' (according to the standards committees that define those things), but that's a different argument
tl;dr: T-Mo's 3G and 4G operate on pretty much the same technology, so if you're in an area where there was 3G, you'll probably have 4G. It doesn't need to switch back and forth or be toggled like the other solutions (looking at you Wi-Max)
It's stable at rest but not in the car hunts between 3g and 1x a lot.....
This might be tough to addresses unless there is another cdma version around we can heist the radio firmware from.

mine has the same problem even in the same spot.. it will change to 1x during a speed test.. its not a big deal but it is sure annoying
Are you guys getting actual 3G speeds when its not showing 1x? It may not have provisioned correctly and is failing to authenticate on the 3G network.
Yes. I am getting up/down speeds well in excess of 1Mbps, which is WAY beyond 1x capability.

Mine goes from 3g to 1x only when I fire up the gps, data speeds stay the same though.

Honestly, this 1x camping/hunting issue is something I've seen on 3 different phones now on Sprint's network. I think this is a Sprint problem - either the towers or the radio code is too agressive when switching towers, and so the phone is constantly switching between different towers or different modes on the same tower... and the strange part is that the phone switches OFF of a tower with a strong signal to switch ON to a tower with a weak signal. That I don't get at alll.
The irony is that I have worse data problems when I'm at work, where I can actually SEE one of the two nearby cell towers, than at home, where the only tower in range is a good 3 miles away.
Is there a way to disable EDGE on the Infuse 4G? I'm running the stock Android 2.2.1 with UCKH1.
Where I live I have weak signal from a tower that is only equipped with EDGE and weaker signal from a tower with HSPA+. I'd like to lock my phone to using the H+ even though the cell signal is weaker, since it's so much faster. EDGE is painfully slow with weak signal (2-5 KBps).
Obviously, I can disable 3G/4G, but that's the opposite of what I want to do.
I've done several searches about this and come up with nothing helpful. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure it is what you want or not but if you go to setting-advance you can see a setting about HSPA. y you should check that out

I work in low 4G signal area. I currently use Advanced Signal App to manually and permanently change my data connection to CDMA ONLY on my NOTE2 while at work.
Is there an app that will automatically take the stronger signal once my signal reaches a specified "low signal" threshold?
For example, at work I will constantly have a 1 bar 4G signal. Data is basically useless. Then I use Advanced Signal to change it to 3G. With 3G, ill have a nice 3-4 bar signal allowing me to use my data.
Just want the phone to wait h over to 3G by itself without grasping and holding onto that LOW,1Bar 4G signal.
Attached are 2 screenshots taken from my desk at work. Same location geographically.
TIA.

I was on Sprint and just recently switched to Tmobile. I've noticed my Nexus 5 battery drains faster now that I am on Tmobile, by a noticeable margin. Has anyone experience this?
You must post more information.
- The type of connection you are using most of the time.... (2G - E - G / 3G or H / 4G).
- The signal strength, dBm numbers..... or at least the amount of bars you get.
- Are you using a WiFi adapter for data connections or just the mobile data?
Maybe with Sprint you have better signal than with T-Mobile in your area.
i.e.: I switched from Vodaphone's 3G networks to 4G networks in my house. (I don't use WiFi at all, with WiFi there is no really big difference).
With 3G i have 4/4 bars (less than 5-6% battery drain per night).
With 4G i have 2/2 bars (from 6% to 20% drain per night; 6% when im near 3 bars, and 20% when im near 1 bar of signal).
If you have exactly or almost the same signal strength and network type with both carriers, but you still have more drain with T-Mobile, then that would be more interesting...

Yup that is T-Mobile alright. Good signal outside and no signal inside.
Get a signal repeater ( cel fi ) and it'll all be good.
Too bad WiFi calling is not a playstore app, if T-Mobile really wants to be the uncarrier they would make that happen.

All T-Mobile phones cannot have Wifi calling as T-Mobile needs to Modify the system itself such as the radio and the RIL and other things they actually work in conjunction with Qualcomm and other radio's to making wifi calling smooth and seamless.

Yes with the old GAN and UMA architecture that is true, but with IMS there is no reason they cannot make an voip app or ims portal app that has access to Sim card identify., and put it on the play store.

Email John Legere and Tweet T-Mobile about it perhaps we'll see it in Uncarrier 5.0
The only problem that I can see of is maybe patents? and licencing stuff? with VOIP related things...? I don't know
