[Q] Are there any decent calendar apps/widgets?

Hi guys.
I got my first smartphone a few days ago (Motorola Defy, put CM7 on it).
I've been playing around with everything and am generally satisfied, but I'm gutted about the calendar - it's flat out terrible I hate the input method and the lack of differentiation in event types (only "appointment")
I've been trying different apps and widgets but they either look like they're remnants of 80's websites or have zero functionality/user friendliness it seems (but perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places, hence this thread).
I'm not an IT guy, but I can't believe that given the other stuff that's out there, calendar apps are an impossible thing to program?
What calendar apps/widgets do you guys use?
I have it set up like this now (colors distorted for some reason):
- launcherpro plus calendar widget on top
- colornote checklist as a make-shift task list
- calwidget to show upcoming events.
I like the launcher pro calendar widget, but I miss
- color coded dots to easily see what type of event(s) are attached to a day instead of only seeing that there is "something" there
- different types of entries (memo, appointment, birthday, etc instead of just "appointment")
- easy entry of just memo's for a day without having to set the time (which is a real cumbersome procedure by the way, given the way you have to either input those hours by pressing those arrows up or down or by x amount of extra clicks in order to select, delete and type them in - why not just make them typeable from the start or use sliders to set the time intervals - it's a touch screen, how hard can that be?).
- if no particular day is selected, a box underneath the overview of the month shows the events that are coming up next
- clicking on a day to open up the details for that day in the box underneath the monthly calendar, without removing the monthly oversight
- when entering a new entry -> first a simple choice screen asking whether you want to put in a birthday, a memo (which leads to not having to input any time, location etc and hence an uncluttered entry screen used for quick entries) or an appointment (which has the options to enter start/ending hour, location, title, description, etc)
I just want to click on a day and see all the events on it without losing sight of the rest of the month. Click it again -> switches back to the upcoming list instead of day detail. Adding a memo -> holdclick on a day -> pick "add memo" -> enter some text like "has Joe mailed back yet?" -> save, and bam, you're done - this as opposed to having to cycle all over the entry form to select "all day event", enter a title, etc
Or for appointments: holdclick on a day -> pick "add appointment" -> get the current options but with sliders for the hours (just a line showing the 24 with 2 sliders like those you use to select text for defining the timeframe) -> save, done. I also don't get why after having entered an update you have to reload the app through which you entered it - I'm guessing this is because google is involved so perhaps a separate database would be more user friendly.
Nothing overly complicated with 100 options nobody uses anyway.
I wonder if there's anything out there like that.
Try Business Calendar. Excluding the color coding, it has most of what you were asking for.

By far, my favorite google reader app. I downloaded the new version but do not see any option to add a widget. Any ideas?

EDIT - I tried a few more times and the Pro version finally showed up ( v2.4.7 ) so I bought it. Great performance, simple layout, great UI!
------------------------------------------
I have been using the free version (downloaded from the Google Market) for a few days and liked it enough to buy the pro. I tried to download it this morning, but can't find it.
Is it just a matter of timing (a new version being elevated to the market)? I can't find either the free or pro versions in the market this morning.
Thanks,
-Brett.

The new scrollable widget is so much better than the previous widgets!
Just a suggestion: Can you just add an option to the widget to let the user select the background color and transparency!
Keep up the good work.

I will improved the widgets over time.
noinnion, I use you application for a long time now.
There is only one thing I dislike:
Lets say I use the icon > to go to the next article I want to read. The article go super fast and it is very good.
But, if I swype my finger from right to left, it appears that there is a huge "page" to scrool, and it take a loooooong swype to go to the next article.
Is it possible to fix? or at least have a option to go to the next article with a short swipe?
And thanks a lot for the amazing work! Your app is much better than the official Reader app.

I have one Motorola Atrix. Stock AT&T 4.5.9.1 Rom.
I started using gReader when I had one Motorola Milestone and both devices have the same issue.
The screen transition between articles is smooth only if I use the > icon. By swiping, it is really slow.
Sometimes a part of the article stop in the left part of the screen, and I have a large white area in the right of the screen. I need to swipe one more time in the white to reach the next article.
I think it happens due to a delay when gReader is adjusting image sizes in the article.

Ok, thanks a lot, and again, congratulations for the excelent work!
When can we expect greader supporting customized sorting for tags or folders, respectively, and its synchronization with Google Reader? I understand that chronological sorting can be used anywhere although rarely for folders/tags. The alphabetical order, however, is only usable by those following very few feeds. Those who collect more than 500 a day have tags with diverse but fixed priorities.

Love this app...have the paid version, use it everyday!
It would be great for the widget if we could show multiple subscriptions. I would like to show news and sports from different feeds. Also for the widget it would be nice to show what feed each story is from and what time it was updated.

Date format
It would be nice if your program would use the localized date format that the phone use.
Repeating tasks: Next task shows one day early.
Lots of force closing when syncing. And repeating tasks wouldn't sync properly.
Otherwise, I like the UI of the app (the widget could use some updated look).
Version 1.0.3
Hi everyone!
V1.0.3 has been published in the Market to fix some force close issues.
Do update Tasks N Todos and let us know if the problem persists.

Haven't had any fc since the update.
All tasks incorrectly show one day early.
Widget is not that informative without the due dates.
I like the ui of the app (not widget) though.
Looks really nice!
But I'm corcerned about repeating (recurring) tasks.
As far as I know, the feature is not (yet) available in google tasks, so how could it correctly sync with your program?
I've been using remember the milk for years because google is missing recurring tasks...
I'd switch instantly if it works and I have a way to migrate my old rtm tasks

Dates now works correctly.
I can see the dates on the bigger widgets.
Widget 2x4 makes my phone's home screen (Zeam) crash.
Widget 2x2: I still think it would be nice to have the dates in front (localized please!). Maybe use a smaller font?
Also on the 2x2, the heading with the icon takes up too much space, leaving only 4 lines of text. Cut the heading height in half, and there is more space for the text.
Wish: indented tasks like in the google tasks.

Hi elban,
We have a repeating system with the look ahead pattern. Basically, the phone will acts as a host to create repeating tasks and the details on how it works is here.
1. Let's say we have a task with a due date on Nov 10 and let's assume that today's date is 10 Nov.
2. We set it to repeat every 2 days
3. The system will auto populate the recurring tasks based on the look ahead days that we pre-set. In Lite Version the default look ahead is 7.
4. So 10 Nov + 7 days look ahead, the threshold will be 17 Nov. As long as the repeating task falls between this date range, it will be created and populated to Google Tasks.
5. In this case, the repeating tasks with due date 12, 14 and 16 Nov will be created.
6. Now let's assume that two days have passed and today's date is 12 Nov. The system will recognizes that the threshold have increased and auto populate the task with a due date 18 Nov since the threshold has now become 19 Nov.
I hope this explain how the system works. Thanks for liking our UI!

Thanks for the detailed explanation.
I have 2 questions:
- what if I have a monthly or yearly task?
- if I have a daily task will I see 7 tasks in your program and/or in Google?
I think that, instead of a lookahead in days, one future task should be created, optimally when the due one is marked as complete. That's because I just need the current uncomplete instance of the task and not all the future ones.
Cheers

Hi elban,
1. Under the Lite version, a monthly or yearly repeating task will not be seen as the look ahead threshold is only 7 days. You will only see that task 7 days before it is due.
Under the Full version, you can change the threshold to a maximum of 60 days.
- If you create a recurring task on 11 Nov repeating every month with a 30 days threshold, you will see a repeating task for 11 Dec. A 60 days threshold will show you repeating tasks for 11 Dec & 11 Jan.
- The yearly tasks will be seen X days before due date, with X being the look ahead days.
2. If you create a recurring tasks for 11 Nov repeating every 1 day, you will see the tasks from 11 Nov to 18 Now.
We will consider your feedback when designing future updates. Thanks!

Widget
After trying to use the widgets for a while, I feel there are things that could be improved.
I understand you want to use the special Date icons on the widget too. However, that makes each task take up 2 lines, whereas with a simple text date, each task can have one line and on the 3x4 widget, you could have 9 tasks showing instead of 4 1/2.
Also the second line's info is unnecessary when you have the date there. I don't really need to see that the task is due tomorrow, when the due date is Thu 1-Dec.
Also it cuts off the last task, but instead of showing the task title and no second line, it shows the 2nd line which is totally useless without the task title. This also happens in your other widgets.
Your description of the widgets, goes against the common description for widgets. When the widget is described as 4x1, this normally means 4 columns and 1 row. Your widget 2x4 (and all the others) uses 2 rows and 4 columns.

[APP][4.1+] Kiwi Browser? Chromium + Adblock + CAF + Night Mode 2021-07-29|Active

Hi,
*** Join the Kiwi development Discord @ https://discord.gg/XyMppQq ***
I've been an official developer on the Chromium project and WebKit in 2007 and 2008 (paid by Google as part of Google Summer of Code).
Since the feedback has been positive, I'd like to interact with the XDA community to get feedback, ideas, or just give help.
I'm a big fan of CAF Browsers, but unfortunately, they are not updated anymore and this is one of the biggest reason I've started the work.
This is *not* a variant of an existing project. The codebase varies significantly but it's conceptually inspired by CAF.
The browser is still very much work-in-progress, so I really appreciate feedback and ideas. I'm working 4 hours per day on the browser and I use it myself every day so decent stability is expected.
This is a hobby project, and I'm looking for feedback here, so I'm cool with any kind of critics.
I can only answer outside of daytime (Europe timezone) as I have to work during the day to buy food for my cats.

Kiwi Browser
What is Kiwi Browser ?
- Kiwi Browser is a Chromium Canary that includes performance improvements and adblock.
- What's this browser for ?
Imagine a grumpy grand-pa, and that's how the browser should be. The browser should be forgotten and not go in your way.
No flashing stuff, no annoyances, Fast & Quiet.
If you want to add a search engine, just go on the search engine website, then the search engine will appear by itself in settings.
Features:
* Support for Chrome Extensions
* Speed improvements
I've added lot of crazy hacks inside WebKit (Blink) to get it running faster.
* Night mode
* Move address bar to the bottom
* Cookie acceptance
Automatically accepts lots of "Please this is GDPR, and cookie, and blablabla" messages.
It's not perfect yet, as many websites have added GDPR messages lately.
* Notifications blocker
Blocks notifications.
* Cryptojacking blocker
Saving battery and prevents phone from heating.
Try it on http://www.coinhive.com (you can re-enable cryptomining in chrome://flags if you really like it for some reason )
* Extensions support
Supports real Google Chrome extensions.
* Popup-blocker
This is not the usual popup blocker, there is an heuristic inside to browser to determine whether the new window should be opened or not.
* Adblock & Tracking protection
The browser offers much better privacy protection than Chrome and Brave. It blocks also lot of ads. Not really because ads are bad, but mostly to make the browsing fast.
* Android 4.1+ support for both ARM and X86
Note: On certain Android versions, when you uninstall an app, Android also removes your downloads.
Keep it in mind if you manipulate Kiwi (to backup bookmarks file) or transfer to another device.
Important things to know about privacy:
- No tracking SDK
https://reports.exodus-privacy.eu.org/en/reports/search/com.kiwibrowser.browser/
- No in-app tracking / metrics
- No history collection
- Self-funded

Version Lena (September 28, 2019)

Version Eden (May 26, 2019)
This version resolves issue of extensions unloading.
On some devices (in particular Xiaomi), extensions may be unloaded by the system when the device wants to optimize memory.
During the optimization, the device (Android) chooses what processes to disable.
In this new release of Kiwi: Kiwi indicates to Android that if Android wants more memory, it should try to avoid disabling the current active tab and the extensions.
If the extensions are disabled by Android, Kiwi will try to reload them.
Version Deneb (May 23, 2019)

Version Pollux (May 8, 2019)
The bad news: Background play is now disabled on YouTube (request of Google).
XDA users are smart and may find better software for this in these forums and the most technical may even find way to mod the browser but I won't provide any support or help for this.
The good news:
- This version has better performance
- New content filters
- Better extensions support
- Introduces a Diamond Black theme and the homepage is compatible with Dark Reader.
Version Phi (April 19, 2019)

An issue with downloading PDF files has been resolved, and another issue where the extension window was sometimes connected to the incorrect tab.

List of HTTP queries used in the browser:
- search.kiwibrowser.com tells you what is the closest google.com server (google.fr/google.de/google.it)
http://search.kiwibrowser.com/searchdomaincheck?format=domain&type=chrome
This is a speed reason, if you go directly to google.fr rather than google.com and then google.fr it's faster, and the browser caches this information
- update.kiwibrowser.com is to download the ad blocking list ( http://update.kiwibrowser.com/service/update2 ), yes it needs to download it from somewhere.
Brave downloads it from AWS for example. I do have the same: a text file with a list of filters
- suggest.kiwibrowser.com is a 302 to Google autocomplete (and DuckDuckGo for some users who are beta-testing Bang support)
If you change your search engine, even to the baked Google one, you won't get connected to suggest.kiwibrowser.com at all as far as I know.
At the end of the day, I need to send the query somewhere, there is no choice.
Whether Google, or DuckDuckDuck if you want Suggest, it *has* to ask a server somewhere.
You can turn Suggest off, or send Suggest to your favorite search provider by adding or selecting it.
- chromecontentsuggestions-pa is to download news - http://chromecontentsuggestions-pa.kiwibrowser.com/v1/
Hello !
I'm not reporting any issue, it's just a comment to let you know that I just downloaded and tested the app on 2 different phones, and it works very well !
There is a bit less animations compared to Brave Browser or Chromium (or maybe they're faster), but it is a bit faster on a Honor 5C.
But it seems that the big difference appears on low end devices : on an old KitKat device, it is way smoother than Brave Browser in scrolling...
Otherwise, thanks for this awesome app ! The night mode is very convenient.
Would it be possible to keep it activated after closing the app ?
I mean, the app remembering that the night mode was on for next time you use it ?
Hello,
Thanks for the nice words about the speed :victory:
I totally see what you mean about the night mode.
The night mode resets on relaunch in order to avoid incoherence (half is in night mode, half is in day mode and that looks quite ugly)
I'm sure there is a way to improve that, once it's improved, then I can remove the reset
I'll ping you on progress,
Just tested it for a few minutes on my most visited sites. With adblocking on, theverge.com doesn't show it's site logo and navigation bar. Hope you could fix that. Thanks. Nice and fast browser.
Noted, I'll fix theverge.com during the week and update you (and also remove this horrible cookie box )
Hello, Google fvcked up full screen video on canary. It doesn't work correctly since months on multiple roms. It just fails to hide the nav bar and status bar. This issue is also there on ur browser and even though it's not ur fvck up, I'd like to ask, if u can try to fix it. I have a OnePlus One currently on LOS 15.1 Oreo. The screenshot is from the video that popped up first when I launched YouTube.com but it is like that on any website.
To get even more crazy, is there anyway to bring back the URL bar at the bottom?
I think I know what it is,
Can you go to chrome://flags in the address bar
and set "New Media Controls" (#enable-new-media-controls) to "Disabled" ?
If that works, then I know what to change by default
I closely followed development of these new media controls (I am working on gestures for media playing), and they seem to be very buggy so I wouldn't be surprised if they were the cause of the fullscreen not ok.
Note: maybe it's not related to media controls, but I strongly suspect it.
Let me know if this solves the problem,
Btw, yes of course I want to fix it that's a major thing
The more I read the answer, the less I'm sure it's the cause
Let me know, I'm very curious on that one if disabling the modern media controls solves it.
Otherwise I'll find a way to reproduce.
Extremely fast and nice :good:
I don't know if it's possible, but any way to bring this kind of tabs?
extension support like yandex will benefit
Nice to see another Chromium fork, especially from my own country! ?
I have some suggestions though:
1) Please consider open-sourcing the browser for trustworthiness and copying (the more forks we have, the better they get)
2) Do consider enabling the flags in chrome://flags instead of target arguments, that would bring an easy overview of what is already enabled and what isn't.
3) I'm not sure how much you changed the ad blocking compared to the built-in one, but the menu has an option "Hide annoying ads" - would it be possible to hide all ads instead?
Is there any way to hide the status bar.. As shown in the screenshots of the browser??
I can't begin to express how much I love this browsers. It is fast, really really fast, like puffin fast. I don't know what you did but its too damn good. I have struggled to get a good browsers which offers the perfect blend of speed adblocking and ui and kiwi provides just that. It didn't took 10 min to make me fall in love with it. The adblocking works as charm. I do have adaway for ads but the cosmetic filtering is what i wanted for ages. Really keep up the good work.

Click to collapse
3) hide annoying ads is probably cosmetic filtering, it hides the blocked ad banner its per site option like in brave. Not sure what you mean, are u asking to rename?

I don't think so, its mostly rom feature called expanded desktop.

If it really is what you claim it to be, yes, a rename would make sense too. For example, "hide ad placeholders".
Otherwise I expected it to be Adblock Plus-style where some ads are whitelisted.

fvck yeah
I'm working on that at the moment (along with Speed Dial and tons of fixes).
The main reason why it's not done yet is that during the switch from Chrome Home to Chrome Duplex, Google moved the code all over the place and refactored almost everything, so it's not just "reviving" the feature, but really to reimplement it.
It's planned, I have a very big (and slippery) phone, and I broke it because of no Omnibox at the bottom (my phone is more slippery than a soap bar).

I have tried, it doesn't render well because the space taken is huge, but it is on the list.
I'll upload some screenshots next week I guess
