After scouring forums, reading tons of posts, and taking a number of notes I've compiled what I think is a sane way to de-crapify your Samsung Captivate and create a backup so that you can restore from it later. Root access is assumed for this HOWTO.
1) Install ROM Manager and Titanium Backup to a fresh install.
2) Extract the apks and save them to my computer.
3) Wipe the phone again (I did this because to download these two apps I had to login to Google, etc).
4) With my phone in a fresh state, adb install both ROM Manager and Titanium Backup.
5) Make sure both ROM Manager and Titanium Backup are working.
6) From ROM Manager, "Flash ClockworkMod Recovery"
7) From ROM Manager, "Backup Current ROM" and save it as "Clean_Install-DATESTAMP"
8) After the backup has completed and I am back in my device, open Titanium Backup, grab the latest busybox, and remove the following:
Apps:
AllShare
AT&T FamilyMap
AT&T Hot Spots
AT&T Maps
AT&T Music
AT&T Navigator
AT&T Radio
Daily Briefing
Email
Instant Messaging
Media Hub
Mini Diary
Mobile Banking
Mobile Video
MobiTV
Where
Write and Go
YPmobile
Widgets:
Buddies Now
Calendar Clock
Days
Dual Clock
Feeds and Updates
Yahoo! Finance Clock
9) Clean up the UI since a bunch of widgets are gone, etc. This involves removing all but one home page and removing the content from the remaining page, changing wallpaper, etc.
10) Go back into ROM Manager, "Backup Current ROM" and save it as "Clean_Install_No_Bloatware-DATESTAMP"
11) After the backup has completed and my device has rebooted I can now install and configure things normally.
Is there a better process for this? I have a touch of OCD so I wanted everything to be as perfect as posible.
Wow, very clean and simple directions for something I've scoured hundreds of threads to sort of understand. Awesome and thanks!
Glad I could help.

Quality post content and instructions! - However, the title could use some work. The current title is not specific at all and if a user was to search for help they would never find it. May I suggest a title similar to [HOWTO] Remove Bloatware and Make a Backup ... etc. Basically connect the title to the content.
Otherwise very clean post!

I know when you root the N1 it wipes the phone. My question is can I use any of the various backup programs to back all my apps up and re-install when I root? If so, which is recommended?
My applications were partially restored after rooting. Not sure how, though.
Mybackup Pro will do what you ask.
Seems like it restores apps you install from the market.
Any app not installed from the market has too be be manually re-installed.

It appears, from what some others have suggested, that it reinstalls apps you have installed from the Market if you have Google backup your settings. And yes, MyBackup Pro is a nice app. A bit pricey but it's extremely useful, especially if you are always wiping (a 30 day free trial is available if you only need it once). My Backup for Root Users is free but it can be buggy at times and obviously cannot be used until after you've rooted.
has anyone noticed mybackup pro errors out on home screen backup?
no errors on mine.
its not an error that stands out...when i perform a backup i select bookmarks, sys settings, android home, and playlists. once the app is finished backup up the data i get the summary window which displays the following:
backup bookmarks successful
backup system settings successful
backup home shortcuts failed: null
backup music playlist successful
I have had no problems with My Backup Pro. I especially like the online backup just in case your SD card becomes corrupt and wipes everything.
Astro
Astro file manager has an application backup tool, and it will save the apps to the SD card.
Astro is a very cool file manager and completely free.
I've been using Mybackup Pro for a while now, as I am always swapping between phones, and wiping them etc. so I figured I would pay for the pro version.
If however it is just to wipe the phone once, I would recommend the trial version. It can be installed to back things up, then you can install it again after the wipe and restore everything to the way it was.
Hope that helps any.
I haven't taken the plunge to Cyanogen's beta ROM yet. Is there a way to back up all of my phone's settings (notification settings, sounds selections, homescreen layouts) so that I can restore them afterwards without jacking things up?
I've used apps to back up my settings before, but am always scared to restore settings following a wipe when going from one kind of ROM to another, or (in this case) from stock to a custom ROM. Should I not be worried?
Hey Guys!
So I've been around the place for a while, usually passive. I rooted my phone a few months back, and left it at that coz i was too scared of bricking my new phone . But now getting tired of waiting for the official ICS (Not the buggy leak) has got me thinking of getting a custom Rom (cant decide between Victory or Romulus).
I've just installed CMW, and my phones backing up as we speak. My question is this, is it possible to restore a partial backup? Im hoping that once i get the custom rom up and running, i can restore my contacts, texts and apps onto my new rom. I know titanium backup can restore apps but i assume all that is gone once i format before installing the rom, right?
Thanks guys any help appreciated!

When you install any new ROM, you (usually) need to perform a full wipe through CWM including: wipe user data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe Dalvik, then flash. Now, that will delete ALL of your stuff, contacts, texts, apps, etc. However, if you have access to WiFi, when your ROM flash has completed, you will be prompted to re-enter your Google account and, at which time, your contacts will re-populate (give it some time). Though, be sure you sync with Google's servers prior to your flash, so that any new contacts will be re-added once your account has been added after the flash. Also, if on WiFi, when your account has been entered, go to Google Play Store, and click the "my apps" button, and again after some time (depending on the number of apps you had) they too will re-populate. As far as texts, you could try a text backup app -not too familiar with this, as I don't ever have a need to save any texts- and you should be good. Word of warning: DO NOT use Titanium Backup to restore ANY application data, only the apps themselves. Also, another good alternative to TIB is App Backup & Restore. Hopefully, this clears up any doubts you have with your "stuff" and how to retrieve it after a flash...
Apex used capital letters in "do not restore app data" with good reason. Only a handful of times have I not followed those directions and every time I got weird fc's and an overall more unstable system. It's a shame there isn't a good way to do it but it only leads to heartache. Always keep a solid backup. I keep two. One original and another after a couple days on a new rom so that I'm able to experiment down the line.
I hope you have a good experience with your new system and learn a bit. It gets a little addicting.

So, once i clear everything and flash, to get back my apps all i have to do is reinstall "App Backup and Restore" then I can restore any saved apps? Because looking at the play store, the list in my apps (Not Installed) is too long, and contains apps that i simply installed to try and immediately removed.
One more thing as well, well actually 2. I was watching a video by mastermind278 on youtube on how to install custom Roms. He installs a rom by selecting restore from cmw recovery, so my question is, does that restore method work for installing most Roms, say for example, the Romulus rom? And finally, are the separate mods installed in the same way?

You can 'manually' select which apps you'd like to restore from within this app, so if there are some you'd rather forgo restoring, you can pick and choose.
As far as the flashing method through CWM, you'll just have to read and understand each of the ROM's flashing methods, as some of the GB ROM installs are different (flash or CWM restore). All of which are detailed in the threads for these ROM's. Along with that, any mods you'd like, you'll just need to refer to the install instructions for each...

Does anyone have the latest version of Shazam Encore (Paid) version working on the GSIII? I believe it is 3.11.1. I'm using Synergy ICS r-64 and the app just says connection error right after you launch and it says "Setting up Shazam."
The update just released was supposed to fix this issue but it hasn't for me. If you must ask, "Why Shazam and not Soundhound?" The answer is that Shazam works much better at identifying electronic music and DJ remixes and the like for me.
I just used it a few hours ago to test the new TV/Movie ID feature, and it worked beautifully. CM10.
No solution from me, but it is happening to me as well. I'm just stock rooted
Running Synergy r73 and it works fine.
[GUIDE] Shazam Encore - How to Fix!
After an hour of messing around with the application data folder and databases and Titanium Backup I have found a way to get this program working. This is the only way I have figured out how to get it working so far and may also work with the free version. This is more of a band-aid than a complete fix, but you will be able to use the app as long as you don't clear the data. By the way, what we are fixing here is the "Could not establish a connection (ftu.ope)" problem when launching the app, which seems to be common with TouchWiz ROMs and a few Sense variations that I've seen. This process should be adaptable to any device. Someone with a bit more knowledge on how Android applications work may wish to discuss my theories on what is actually going wrong here. But anyways...
Basically what we are doing is installing a fresh ROM, activating Shazam (or Shazam Encore), creating a backup with Titanium, exporting it to the SD card, and then nandroiding back to your original config and importing the backup. If you need directions, those are below, and it couldn't hurt to check them out real quick anyway even if you know what you're doing.
DISCLAIMER: Don't mess up your device! If you think you need help, ask before you try this!
Requirements:
-Rooted with a custom recovery
-Titanium Backup (possibly the paid version)
-Some time to kill
1. Delete Shazam Encore completely from your phone using Titanium Backup or the Application Manager in Settings.
2. Make sure you have used Titanium Backup to create a backup of something so that it saves its preferences and your Android ID. If you haven't backed up everything, maybe you should . The Android ID is automatically saved with your backup if you have not changed that from the default settings.
3. Download a ROM for your device and put it on your SD card, preferably something of a different flavor than what you are using now, although the same ROM might work.
4. Reboot to Recovery
5. Create a full nandroid backup of your device.
6. Do a fresh install of your ROM of choice according to its instructions.
7. Boot the ROM, log into your Google account, and use Play Store to install Titanium and your Pro Key if you have one.
8. Open Titanium Backup and it should prompt you to restore your Android ID. Yes, you want to restore it, and then your device will reboot immediately.
9. Download Shazam (Encore) from the Play Store and run it. It should load up and work just fine. Once it is set up, exit the app.
10. Use Titanium Backup to manually make a backup of Shazam under "Backup/Restore."
11. Once the backup is made, long press Shazam under "Backup/Restore" and select "Send latest backup..."
12. Select "App+Data (Easy Import)" and "save file locally" (top option) on your SD card. Note save location to avoid headache.
13. Reboot into recovery and restore your nandroid backup.
14. Clear the cache and dalvik just to be safe.
15. Reboot, and once your phone is up and running, use a file explorer to launch the Shazam Backup file you exported (something like com.shazam.android-xxxxxxxx.TiBkp) and open it with Titanium Backup,
16. Select to restore App AND Data.
17. Shazam should now work.
Post your success (or failure) here so I can make any edits/improvements as necessary.
Enjoy!
I cant enter bootloader it seems to stop at usb download protocol and thats it I have unlocked it successfully.
Hi, not sure what you mean? So you have unlocked the bootloader, ICS or JB?
[I unlocked jb 4.1.1 and when I try to go in the bootloader it stops at that protcol line.

The apps listed above are nice for the things you mention and much more.
You asked what you can do now. My suggestion is nothing except carefully look around and do some reading. Any of the apps listed above can brick your tablet before you can blink twice.
Don't be in a hurry to make changes without reading and if necessary asking questions. Even soft-bricks are not fun but can certainly teach important lessons.
Normal use will help you decide your path of what to do next. Take your time, do some reading and enjoy your tablet and everything will fall into place!
Good Luck!

So you have unlocked your JB bootloader, you flashed a custom recovery CWM or TWRP? and rooted. While still on stock Asus firmware I would make a nandroid backup, reboot to recovery and make backup, reboot, put a copy of backup on pc. If something goes wrong provided you can boot into recovery then you can restore your nandroid backup. You can stay on stock rom or flash a custom rom, I use Energy rom. I use Titanium Backup (free version) to backup & remove apps. I have removed the following apps without issue:
@vibe Fun Centre
App Backup
App Locker
Asus Facebook Poster
Contacts
Contacts Storage
File Manager
Google Bookmarks Sync
Google Calendar Sync
Google Contacts Sync
Google Play Movies
Google Play Music

Make a backup of each app first so you can restore if you want.
Hope this helps.
I'm about to do an upgrade from an stock ROM to Cyanogenmod on a phone I have a lot of apps and settings on.
I know the guides always say "back up before upgrading in case it fails, then upgrade, you'll lose all your previous data". And I know that's the normal way it goes.
I'm a noob to the android OS structure, but is it possible to manually take any parts of the pre-upgrade backup data and paste it in the new OS?
For example how you can copy a lot of programs and AppData (profiles, settings etc) from one installation/version of windows to another.
In my case it would take a lot of extra configuration work even after I use the play store to re-download all the apps. Not to mention some apps are from for ex fdroid or github. And then there's the xposed modules.
Cheers!
I guess I'll upgrade and then try to overwrite app data folders and see how that goes.
I know a lot of you here upgrade your ROMs like every week. Do you spend like 3 days customizing your phone back after each flash?
[EDIT] Found an answer. No thanks to you friendly community (why did someone rate my thread down without saying anything?).
- I found out that Titanium Backup can batch-store all your apps and app data - I wonder if it stores stuff like my Catapult Launcher screen layout and folders.
- Also if all you're doing is an OTA upgrade, you can do it without loosing root: http://www.howtogeek.com/192402/why-androids-ota-updates-remove-root-and-how-to-keep-it/
So flash the new ROM, Root, restore from Titanium (since CWM does a system(-based) image afaik).
