Hi there!
I´m currently using shubCRAFT 1.5 and I can´t stand the keyboard layout. Is there a keyboard available on the Market that´s similar to that one from HTC for their devices? I mean the layout and the alternative characters popup by a long press of the key. Thanks...
I don't know whether this is a good recommendation, but I have been using this keyboard called TouchPal keyboard for a few days and I just love it to bits. With this keyboard, u can slide up on a key to enter capital letters and slide down to enter numbers and symbols. It feels much quicker than doing long presses. Now the thing that might stop u from getting this keyboard is that this is mainly a chinese keyboard. But, if U keep it in english mode it's just like a normal keyboard, if not any better and u will not see any chinese stuff at all. It's on the market for free. To switch between the languages just hit the gear symbol on the lower left corner.

Better Keyboard is pretty much the best standard qwerty keyboard I've used. It isn't free, but you can always get a refund within the first 24 hours.
Though I much prefer Swype to it nowadays.

Second that.
I've been using Swiftkey since the alpha stage and I've used Swype as well at times. I've completely settled on Swiftkey. Definitely the best Android KB IMHO.

Which keyboard do you prefer and why? Also what Android phone do you use it on?
So far... Swype has no competition from those I've used. After only a day, my texting was slightly improved. With practice, I can see myself being an absolute menace.
Hopefully I'll be testing http://www.swiftkey.net/ ... But for now, it's most definitely Swype.
Apple bluetooth keyboard or my little targus
I'm hoping to test that out swift keyboard as well.
Swype owns all other on screen keyboards so far.
Swype for now, but I may give the HTC_IME a try. Everybody I show the Swype keyboard thinks it is awesome.
is HTC_IME the only one with T9 ?
Even after trying out the high res version of the htc ime from the desire, I still type faster and more accurately with swype. I will be glad when they release a more official keyboard. I have used pretty much every keyboard, better keyboard, smart keyboard, low res htc ime, high res htc ime, shapewriter (still think swype does it better), stock (obviously), and none of them in either landscape or portrait are faster for me then swype in portrait.
Also I will be giving swift key a try out once they release their alpha app.
htc ime and better keyboard both have a T9 keyboard, but the htc ime has a better dictionary to go with it making it faster to type with in T9.
Swype was ok, but unusable in landscape which ultimately slowed me down if I had both hands available. The new HDPI HTC_IME from the Desire is perfect, and absolutely none of the lag from the old 1.6 version. I love it and I'm using it with compact QWERTY for portrait version.
swype is the best one taking that it's just a beta now!
hmmm... official over unofficial beta
So I'm going to have to go with ShapeWriter. I tried the Swype, but then decided that ShapeWriter would be a better idea at least for now since Swype is in some type of private beta, and not officially released, so ShapeWriter will be the one getting the official, public updates. And so far I'm typing MUCH faster even though I still am not so great at it... that's my humble opinion =)

I was using Shapewriter over swype for one reason only; the resolution fit the nexus one and looks better. But i find swype to do a better job of knowing what word i want and seems to be smoother even in a pre beta stage. I need to get a high res HTC_IME
Swype in portrait all the way. I can hammer out sentences in seconds. I don't like landscape mode for any keyboard, as it blocks out the webpage or text string I'm on.

Guys, Im looking for a little advise. I text a lot so im not a rookie at it. I feel that I can type faster with smart keyboard than with swype even though I really like swype.
I have been using swype for a week, but i do not feel as fast on it as I do on Smart keyboard. Any advise or should I just time my self with a few sentences?
Play with the speed vs accuracy settings.
Give it a few weeks, (i know that's a loooong time) but I started with shapewriter since I got the phone, and now swype is killer.
I love Swype - but unfortunately it's not multi-lingual - so I need to use the less pretty slideIT instead...
why are people preferring the HTC_IME? Is it because of T9 or something else?
Like the htc_ime especially since we have the hi res version now.
I wish CooTek would release a TouchPal for our device. Loved it on the G1, but ends up around 1/2 the size on the Nexus.
$20.00 to anyone who successfully sizes TouchPal 1.1 for the N1.
PM me if you need the .apk

Not really a problem I think SwiftKey is in trouble otherwise they would have presented it with more decency.. Really a shame for such a big moneymaker.
Listen to what the guy says in the video "... How we redesigned the keyboard..."
They redesigned nothing! They just "borrowed" the concept from thumb keyboard..
I predict with human intelligence instead of AI SwiftKey Intelligence that the SwiftKey keyboard prediction algorithms become totally useless on a tablet. A normal or good keyboard makes the evolution of technologies that are designed for a bad and tiny layout worthless. Imagine a prediction algorithm when typing on a good pc keyboard... Wouldn't you go crazy?
So what more do you want to know
The prediction will still work on the split layout,as you still only use your thumbs, the best thing about it is the skin lol

I don't know how long thumb keyboard has been around, but SwiftKey have been planning this for at least 2 months now.

5 months at least. And thumb keyboard has far more sophisticated layouts. In fact SwifKeys poor implementation is offending for the great idea

Have you seen Thumb Keyboards new Honeycomb skin? Very sophisticated!
Where is the thumb keyboard honeycomb skin? I haven't seen it.
Meh, I'll stick to thumb keyboard...been using it for a few months since I first got my Tab and find it excellent to use. The layout is top notch, the skins are great (I use the Galaxy Tab skin) and the text prediction is very good. The addition of the arrow keys is extremely useful for navigating web pages.

Its my most favorite skin. Great job. I wouldn't even use the swiftkey. Not sure why I would need that type of text prediction. I've used it before but it was so slow, its just a gimmick to show off to friends. LONG LIVE THUMB KEYBOARD!

Hi,
I was wondering if it's possible to get the stock froyo keyboard on the nexus s. I really love it and I still can't get used to the gingerbread one after 3 months. I would prefer to do this without rooting and on the phone if possible. Does anyone know of this being possible?

There are small and light keyboards out there that are free but their dictionaries are small to non existing. Anysoftkeyboard and drben0x are good. I prefer the Dr if I had to pick one. A great paid one is smart keyboard pro. That is the one I've been running for awhile and have been happy. I find using the t9 built in helps when the normal keys are just too narrow. Also, there's a dictionary add on that seems very good with available words. Of coarse there are many others besides these but these are my suggestions.

Smart Keyboard Pro has two versions. A free and paid one, it has about the same features. But +1, I use Smart Keyboard Pro as well.. it's very accurate and I prefer it over any other keyboard including Swiftkey.

I've used smart keyboard before and it is better than the stock gingerbread one but for me nothing matches the feel of the stock froyo keyboard. I will use smart keyboard from now on though of no one's able to find it.

Also you may want to try swype. I am using it right now and have become very fast in using it in less than a month. It's also quite convenient to be able to type fast with one hand.
Hey there... you can try using Google Inc. Chinese IME keyboard. It uses the old Froyo keyboard layout, but you have to be careful not to hit the ABC-Chi button.
Install this keyboard from the market. I am not the maker of this and it is a free product.
Its the FroYo keyboard and it works on gingerbread cm7.

I'm really looking for a decent keyboard as i find that the stock one on GB seems to miss finger input especially on certain keys, I loved swype 3.5 beta but found it KILLED my battery life any body have any suggestions? Something that can improve typing speed, thats's good on battery and not to heavy on hogging resources?

My favourite has to be SlideIT, Similar to Swype but I've always preferred it. Better Keyboard is also a good regular keyboard, I can't go away from SlideIT in the end though
I use thumb keyboard and swift key x
Ultra keyboard - youtube video
Very user customizable.
Iv'e been testing SlideIT 4.0, BetterKeyboard and SwiftKeyX.
SlideIT 4.0 is the best sliding keyboard and fun to use, but in the long run other keyboards is quicker and more accurate.
BetterKeyboard is the best "normal" keyboard.
SeiftKeyX is the keyboard i ended up using because it's the keyboard i can wirte fastest and most accurate with.
For me i find smart keyboard pro the best.
GO keyboard with black theme is by far the best.
Swiftkey X for me.

My favorites are swype beta and thumb keyboard, along with the defualt Gingerbread Keyboard.
I'm curious as to why no one mention Touchpal Keyboard? I love it's Cootek+ technology and couple with compact qwerty keyboard, typing is swift for me!
They are now beta testing their next gen technology call Touchpal Curve which is similar (or better) than Swype. Try register for it.
Just the Gingerbread Keyboard.
My favorites are SlideIT
Easy way
search on google
I actually love the Sense keyboard; it's the only one I found with arrow keys.
I got the smart keyboard and mostly happy with it, although it takes a couple of seconds on my Huawei x3 when i start writing any word. Looking forward to the beta of Touchpal Keyboard

Smart Keyboard Pro definitely!https://market.android.com/details?id=net.cdeguet.smartkeyboardpro&hl=en
I saw this post from last year and thought it'd be fun to get another consensus on the subject, particularly as there is now way more choice.
Personally I've fallen in love with SwiftKeyX, but I'd be interested to know where people's preferences/frustrations lie. Do you stick with Stock, or love Swype or GO, or any of the other hundreds out there?
SwiftKey X for me too. I've used Swype as well. The typing experience in the two is totally distinct so i guess it boils down to individual preference. But even leaving that aside, SwiftKey X is better, IMHO.
Definitely SwiftKey. One of the best keyboards I have used. Simply brilliant.
I like to use my hardware keyboard connected via bluetooth i'm just faster with a hardware keyboard.
Swype
I have swype themed red, love it.
Stock Gingerbread Keyboard <3
I have to agree with you there! I just flashed my Thunderbolt and Galaxy Tab 7 to GB. However, I w2ill find myself going back to Flex T9 because I dictate a lot and the voice recognition is Godly. You don't have to put punctuation in like you do with Google's voice recognition and unlike Google's I have dictated near paragraphs using Flex T9.
Also, I got Flex T9 off of Amazon's Daily Free. It has to be my most used app.
I prefer the Better Keyboard 8 to anything I've tried.

I love SlideIT, very fast and easy.
My favorite feature is the shortcuts you can add, just slide the abbreviation you can set yourself and it will type your specified sentence.
E.g. some built in ones, slide BRB = Be right back, very simple, but very handy if there is something you type again and again, the shortcuts can really speed up your typing. Also it's a nice way to type in e-mail addresses in really fast on sites or apps that you need to log in to.
The new default skin on SlideIT looks bad though, but you can switch to the classic skin, looks much better.
SWYPE keyboard.. works really well for me..

swype
I just took a look at the couple preferred by previous posters, but I am so happy with the free Swype, I couldnt see spending for perhaps a slight advantage.
I love the swype technique along with the voice feature (tho that requires data I believe). You basically slide your fingers across the keys without lifting between keys. It works faster than you can slide the finger around. I like that I can swype a paragraph and very quickly edit any wrong words it selected. Its intuitive for making quick corrections.
My wife converted to it after insisting on getting droid with physical keyboard due to a neurological disorder that makes her hands rather jerky and flinchy. She is so taken with it she forgets she has keypad when she does need it...
A close second is also a free app called shapewriter, which is essentially the same app, but doesnt have the microphone button. It isnt a market app so I got it elsewhere (dont remember who provided a link to it). Definitely worth a look if you can find it. I use titanium backup to preserve it on my phone.
I never had an android phone, but i did once got to try swype on my friend's phone. simply love it. its amazing how fast you can type with it. so i'll go with that
Right now I'm using Beta Swype. I think I'm going to try Swiftkey X since I got free from the Amazon market.
