hello everyone,
I have done enough flashing and reading for the past 4 days. I can now provide you guys with a 100% fail-proof method for getting 4G + Root + Wifi Tether:
1. Flash it back to RUU .1
http://rapidshare.com/files/389983490/RUU_Supersonic_1.32.651.1_Radio_1.39.00.04.26_release_171253.exe
2. Do the automatic OTA update from Sprint to get you to .6 (make sure it is 1.32.651.6 otherwise do not confirm)
3. From your phone, open up internet browser and go to www.unrevoked.com and get yourself rooted
4. From your phone, go to http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_2-pre14.apk&can=2&q= and install the wifi tether application
5. Reboot the phone
6. Update the Profile by going to settings/system update/update profile
7. Reboot the phone
8. Open up your wifi tether application and enjoy!
This is a guaranteed 100% will work with 4G. If it does not work for you, please let me know and I'll do my best to help. Stay tune. I will update this thread after tinkering with toast method, flip, flip ota update, newest radio, wifi tether.
anyone confirm this? Says my phone is rooted then I have an app requesting super user access.
Aite folks I can confirm this is bull****.
I can confirm. I have been waiting for full root for a while but in the meantime this works great. I get root access and am able to get 4G (Chicago) and also wifi tether works great, even when it is in 4G.
While this method works, it also locks us out of a custom recovery, which for me is the biggest reason I root.

Why do you need a custom recovery when you cant even change the ROM with this Root.
That's why i said this is great until the NAND is unlocked so we can change system files while in Android.

Is this is something that will be done? My phone was updated on 6/4/2010 by the bestbuy A$$hole that pulled it out of the box. I have done this root method because I wanted wifi tether. (works great) Im not looking for a new ROM but only to remove the sprint bloatware that is on my phone.
worked for me thanks!!!!

Because it allows you to make android backups, and flash different roms as well as being able to remove apps you don't want, which this rooting method doesn't do.
!It Works!
I used it for about 2 hours at a library.
Step 1. Get Evo and do the update
Step 2. Install unrevoked.
Attachment 1
Step 3. Install Wireless Tether for Root Users 2.0.2
Attachment 2
Step 4. Enjoy Wireless tethering.
**I only rebooted after step 1**
If all you want is root access for your apps and wifi tether then sure, go ahead.
I am rooted with toast's root process and I can wifi-tether via 4G as well as flash ROMs, make nandroid backups, and edit/remove/add system files.
Nothing against Unrevoked or the OP but I just don't want people to think that doing the method in this thread is the only way to get 4G.

well its true that there are more ways to get 4g but the problem is that all the other root methods are pretty much strewn about over the forums (we currently dont have anything to have a unified way to find roms) second NOT every rom is officially working correctly some users are not having 4g working with toats method some user do have 4g working theres no app thats 1000 percent confirmed to working perfectly right now, probably by next we we will have something tested and fully rooted with no large deficiencies. so anyway right now there are no fully configured roms, as such there no real point to root toasts way, besides right now you can downgrade easily and still root toasts way once other roms show up... so right now this is an easy way to root and if all you need is wireless tether then its perfect.
i find it funny that other devs who have made root come on to threads like this and scare people into thinking this is an inferior root, it IS NOT. some people dont care to remove all sorts of stuff some people just want to be able to wireless tether....

Inferior as defined by Merriam-Webster Dictionary -- 2 a : of low or lower degree or rank b : of poor quality : mediocre
I believe when you have 2 Root's and 1 gives you more options, the one of lower degree or rank is an Inferior Root.
This is just like with the iPhone (which I just moved over from). Sure blackra1n did the job but it also was fast and dirty, didn't give people the ability to stop baseband updates and didn't give them the ability to adjust the partition sizes.
Which is what that one does by blocking custom restore options.
Honestly it took me a whole hour to go back from .6 to .1 then to flash the root, then to flash the custom rom, and flash the 4g radio and install the apk for wireless tethering. If you can't spare the 1 hour to do it right, well then I am sure they won't want to hear about it later when you lose your root.

This is true to a point. There are still some folks that are not able to wifi tether. However, quite a few have flashed the newer radio and had success. I'm still not 100% sure the 4G issue is ROM related.

Thanks for the easy instructions.
I agree with you freelancerx. I tried Toasts way at first and i could not get past the recover part the .bat file never opend my phone. I tried updateing the dirvers, installing htc sync, and did the sdk stuff and still noting. i did want to flash roms but i also wanted tether but i wanted to keep my sprint stiff for now. the unevoroked method is a great way of getting root access if you are looking for a way to use wifi and still have working 4g and not have to use the command promt to do everyting.
For those who have successfully done this, how in the world do you get around the whole Ad-Hoc Network connection thing. I rooted my phone by unrevoked and installed the Android-Wifi-Tether program. I've activated the program and it's sending out a signal. I then use my Windows Vista comp. to locate it and it shows my phone as an "Ad-Hoc Network" when I connect to it, it says your computer is not configured for this. I'm not sure now what I should do, is there a problem with my EVO, or this something I need to do with the computer.
Ok I'm newish... I've had a few Android phones but the only one I ever rooted and hacked and customized a lot was the Hero and that was last year so now I'm lost again. I just got my captivate home and I'm reading so many threads claiming to be the best lag fix (I desperately need to fix lag because coming from an iPhone 4 this phone is driving me nuts) or the best this or that.... I need to know what I should do next... There is super rooter and then there is unleash the beast and even still there is pimp my captivate.... I'm just figuring out what I should do... I want to get rid of all this Samsung AT&T garbage (including market restrictions), I want to get rid of this lag, I want the fastest galaxy S possible and I want to customize the heck out of this... where do I begin? Any guidance at all would be greatly appreciated.
I'd check out the different threads here and in the dev forum. you'll want to root it, enable sideloading, apply the speedfix of your choice, install launcher pro (or adw.launcher), probably use fightspit's circle battery indicator (the default one is horrible, shows full when you've got 80%), and in general just browse the stickies and high post count threads for neat hacks that you might be interested in.
I would def. Check out launcher pro if I was you, I've had it since day one and never had a problem with lag. If you like it donate to get the plus version cause it has some sense like widgets. I ran one click root then unleash the beast. Also did the battery mod as well. All I could ask for now is a complete gps fix and froyo and I'd be a happy camper. Also check out beautiful widgets, I know they are all paid but worth every penny if u ask me.

Thanks for the quick responses guys.... I forgot to mention that I am running launcher pro. The lag comes in when scrolling through apps and large lists some times as well as when opening and closing apps and changing settings and things quickly... it just hiccups and needs to catch up with itself. Is unleash the beast and the guide from this link the same thing: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761819

Check out the SuperRooter Extreme thread...This make your phone fly...I have it on mine and its great..
How do I get nandroid on this phone? I've looked in the market but I can't find it...
The first step of running super rooter is nandroid backup.
rom manager for the nandroid backups
titanium backup to back-up individual apps/settings to bring them back when you get a rom you like
second for designgear's SuperRooterExtreme. he's compiled the best of the best in this...for now

ROM Manager will back up your ROM once you get it all setup the way you like it. Since you are still on the stock ROM and the is a restore for that already ( STOCK Odin3 1 Click ) you don't need to backup your ROM. Install the superrooter and then once you get it all setup download ROM manager for the market and you can make nandroid backup using it...It makes it easy to switch ROM's on the fly...
In the comments section on the market it says I have to be root to use this... is this true? Kind of defeats the purpose if I want to use this to backup BEFORE I root the phone... :-(

Also to the OP follow the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=761819 guide
I have access to a Windows computer today so I'll try to do it... However how do I ensure that I don't have to repay for my apps that I've already purchased? I had a few apps from before when I tried and Android phone and not all of the apps I purchased were in my download history in the market app... I don't want to repay for apps. :-(
Any more thoughts guys?
Long story short, I run an android rooting business off craigslist, and a client wants me to root his Infuse.
He wants Gingerbread and WiFi tethering.
I can see we don't have any Gingerbread ROMs out yet, and that's just fine.
My main question is, which Roms support wifi tether and which one is the most stable?
Do you donate half of what you make to devs?
AFAIK they all support the tether feature.
Of course if I'm wrong you can just have your customer use Barnacle Wi-Fi tether once you root their Phone.
Personally I use Bionix and I love it. No issues at all.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
LMAO! Hope your donating to the devs.
its not complicated... and u can unlock Original wifi and usb tether, no extra programs needed. all u need is to have phone rooted, then download titanium backup and look for a program with titanium called "tetheringmanager" then eith backup then uninstall, just uninstall or just freeze. works like charm, i use this technique for my infuse and my old samsung captivate
For Wi-fi tethering,
You can do 1 of 2 things
1)Root the phone and buy an app called SystemApp Freezer ($1). Then Freeze tetheringmanager
2) Root the phone and flash any of the 3 Rom's in circulation. They all support Wifi tethering. I'm on Infused 1.5 and Wi fi tethering works flawlessly.
titanium backup does that for free
infused is probably the most popular. if done through rom manager you have the option for aosp lock screen. infused runs touchwiz launcher but gb launcher is also installed. it also supports touch wiz 4 if that is desired. the other roms are going for a more aosp look and have gingerbread launcher.
the standard way to root this phone is superoneclick from clshort fuse. but like others are saying, if you are profiting off this you should probably donate, especially to clshortfuse and to the original developer of rageagainstthecage.
the phone is not nand locked, recovery is signature verified and needs to be modded before flashing cwm.
alternatively you can just use odin (thank you samsung) and flash one of the voodoo enabled kernels achieving root and getting red cwm in the process. i really recommend the community kernel.
Thanks for the help guys!
I didn't know about freezing tetheringmanager, I'm thinking I won't even need to flash a custom ROM for him now. Of course, if I do I will donate (I already have to members of the MT3GS and G1 community) because if it weren't for the awesome devs, I wouldn't even be profiting.
Thanks again, if I have any more I'll be sure to ask them, you guys seem like a very helpful community
EDIT: So if I install the community Voodoo v7 kernal (using the method on the post) I will then be able to flash ROMs via ROM manager and CWM?
This thread seems wrong on many levels. I sure am glad devs don't charge for the stuff they do for us.

someone correct me if i'm wrong, but i think you kinda have this backwards. you MUST have rom manager/cwm installed before you can flash a rom.

ROM Manager is optional. CWM is a must.
What I'm asking is if I install the Voodoo community kernel on an unrooted phone, will it root it for me, allowing me to use Rom Manager to flash roms?

You are only required to have Rom Manger and or clockwork recovery IF you want to flash a rom using zipfile roms. There are many roms which we flash using ODIN and ODIN does not work with zipfiles, it only works with *.TAR files.
I have flashed both ways.. I happen to like the Odin rom flashing with TAR files a lot better because so far I have never had any problems using Odin.
However using zipfile roms with clockwork recovery do many times cause errors and other problems.
Main thing is that when flashing roms you MUST be 100% sure that the rom you are flashing is 100% compatible with your brand/model of phone.

Hello,
I recently upgraded my AT&T Samsung SGH-I997 (Infuse 4g) to the new GINGERBREAD.UCKL2 (2.3.6) version using Kies-Mini.
Now...
I got SuperOneClick v.2.3.3.0 to root the phone, just as I had done before with Froyo.
I made sure USB Debugging was on.
I started SuperOneClick and clicked ROOT
I plugged my phone into USB (Did not click to connect)
SuperOneClick freezes on Step 7.
I have tried every method out there to get around this.
Ideas? Thanks.

I recalled 1 user reported success with repeat attempts.
You can try:

Tried the method linked to above twice to no avail. Each time the process is apparently run without a hitch -- and the phone automatically reboots. But there is no root access when I check using root check or trying to run Titanium BU. If anyone has any other ideas, I'm all ears. I'd like to get rooted....
yes please be a guinni pig. but i dont have high hopes for rooting without a non secure kernel.
now that the bulk of users arent scare of gb since it became official it would be nice to see if anything will root it other than a kernel (the kernel swap is fool proof but annoying with all the lagfix and sdcard mounting weirdness that we have right now, need sources and devs... lol)

I am in the same boat. I didn't do the research about the ease of rooting prior to moving to gingerbread. I have been waiting intently and checking often for this official gingerbread release.
So far I am noticing tremendously increased battery life. I could normally run 8-10 hours and with the same usage I am getting 14-16.
I miss my root terribly- I use it to Wifi Tether for my laptop among many things.
I am willing to be a tester, I have no experience with rooting or flashing beyond SOC. I am an old-school blackrain/redsnow guy from my iphone days so I get nervous with all this "flashing kernels" talk.
Any advice for a novice wanting to enjoy some gingerbread goodness without sacrificing root?
Any recommended kernels to flash to for the infuse? I want it to be as close to stock as possible without losing features or my newfound battery.
Root FTW!

Try Zeus Build 5.2 stock or Victory or Leak Uckl2 rooted. There are all uckl2 based. As Close to stock as possible.
I wonder if downgrading to older rooted firmware and then using CWM, applying a zip format of the UCKL2 rooted ROM would work? Just a thought...
I don't know if this method works.
Flash a custom kernel with root on it. Then flash back to stock kernel. Worked when leak came out, so I don't see why it won't work with this since they're identical.

yes that would work. but you could also flash the rooted leak with a flashtool like odin or swap kernels around with a flash tool like odin or heimdall since you will need it to flash stock anyhow....

That sounds awesome Dani. I don't mind the idea of trying out something like Zeus or Odin. I love Greek and Norse mythology so these names really hit home. this is true but some people prefer stock (odexed and all) and its not totally unreasonable. I'm running Zeus myself. and it is quicker than other kl2 builds I used. I have all the stuff I want to put together but I'm juggling time with watching my nephews, fixing my car and later the big game and I have to test every thing in there too. I'm a bit slow but ill get everything together before tomorrow I'm sure.

hang on. they pulled the update and will release another one.
bassicaly you can flash a Rogers based custom kernel for root but the sdcard mounting and video and wifi is all different and depending on the kernel you flash may not work. the more recent version of these kernels have workarounds in the boot scripts and will fix the sdcard and wifi, the video is a fix you gotta do yourself and the Rogers phone doesn't support HDMI so that is lost. the best thing to do is flash a custom kernel for one boot and flash back to stock. I was making a cwm package to flash the kernel to stock but had errors in my updater script. I can fix it but I'm waiting on the next update because I don't feel like doing it twice. I figure if someone truely needs root they should be able to follow the Rogers root thread an get through it.
if you want to do it manually you will need the stock kernel and a custom kernel like the Rogers root kernel. and you will want the ultimate unbrick package (just in case) and a copy of Odin3 v1.7 or v1.82 or heimdall. there is an Odin flashable copy of the kl2 kernel floating around somewhere. maybe in the numas rom or Caty rom thread but if not it can be extracted from the package from prezkret and zip'd and flashed with sgs kernel flasher.
when. you have all the parts, open odin and load the custom kernel into the PDA slot. the kernel must be in a tarball. that's an archive with a ".tar" extension. it may also be in a ".tar.md5" put the phone in download mode (shut down the phone and hold volume+ and volume- and insert the USB cable) when you see the android with a shovel start the flash.
reboot the phone, then flash the stock kl2 kernel. (don't flash the kg3 kernel from the Rogers thread or a froyo kernel) if you have the stock kernel in a .tar or .tar.md5 flash it the same way as before. if you have a zImage only then zip it and flash it through sgs kernel flasher from the market.
Any luck how to root 2.3.6 ?
Okay I have been searching the forums and Google for a while now and normally I would make all attempts to avoid posting but I have yet to find my answer. I have conflicting answers for a few of the other questions as well.
I just rooted my Samsung infuse 4G I am running Firmware version 2.2.1 I997UCKH1 I noticed when I connected to Kies Mini after plugging in my phone and selecting the kies update option that my phone had a firmware update.
It is telling me that the update is I997UCLB3 so now my question because I have conflicting answers. Some posts claim if you are already rooted this firmware update wont remove your root. Others claim you need to root it again but you are unable to do it with SOC so what is true here.
Next question is it worth the update to this new firmware or should I just run what I have and leave well enough alone. I was thinking about running a custom rom or Kernal at some point but I have yet to do enough research to do it. So I do not have any plans as of now to run anything other then the stock. I only rooted my phone for some applications like Adaway and what not.
Thank you for any direction everyone might give me.
Ok i suggest don't use the kies...there has been more prob listed with peps using that methods, check my signature for the stock, root with latest gb.
Or if you wasn't custom ROM, you will need
Cwm, Again check sig for one click or odin with cwm...

Okay
Okay thank you I will read up more on CWM before I look into this much more. I take it by your reply though I should update to the newer GB firmware. I also remember reading some place I will need to reroot my phone with CWM or something to that so I take it by your reply I will need to reroot my phone as well huh.
Edit: Oh dear I am reading into this CWM and everything. It seems like a lot more trouble I will keep reading and doing the research but as it stands it almost seems like too much trouble for a firmware update e.e I was stressing enough when it came to rooting it let alone updating firmware. LOL

Look here there are many options to use one click to put latest gb and root, cwm..
Try this one. Option "C" has everthing included.

IIRC, using Kies to upgrade removes root and any possibility of re-rooting that firmware. There's something in Sammy's UCLB3 update that prevents re-rooting, but JScott has a complete UCLB3 package with CWM Red and all listed here.
In my opinion, I would flash UCLB3 via Odin in the above linked post, come back and get on Entropy's CM9 or any other Ice Cream Sandwich based firmware. It's at a point now where just about everything works and what doesn't is being fixed or patched as we speak. I run it as a daily driver and I could NEVER go back to GB or Froyo, it's just THAT good!

Hi. I am a complete noob and have watched the tutorial vid, read and subscribed to the noob and samsung introduction threads. I joined this site with a specific goal. To get rid of this annoying Facebook app that won't uninstall and to be able to install custom apps or games etc that I normally wouldn't be able to. I would also like to finally be able to use my phone as a tethering device.
So, following the link you posted, Option D looks like my best choice. Would option D allow me to do all of what I said?
************ OPTION D *************
I997UCLB3-CWM-root-deodex.rar

- Entropy's Daily Driver kernel
- Red CWM recovery
- Rooted

Option C or D would be my choice but that's because I have a clue what I'm doing.
Honestly, if you plan on becoming the next "flashaholic", become familiar with heimdall and Odin as well because sometimes a flash can go wrong and leave you stuck at the boot screen, in which case you'll need either of the above to regain recovery options.
