skype only over wifi? - EVO 4G Themes and Apps

Skype now available natively for android in the market... but only over wifi?
http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/05/skype-app-arrives-in-android-market-still-wifi-only/
I'm really hoping a fix for this comes soon, I like being able to use my iPad data connection to make skype calls. Doing it on the Evo would be even better

thanks for the information. just downloaded it and tested hoping that it would work on data..

I guess I've never thought to ask if there's an application that fools your apps into thinking they're running on wifi when they're running on cellular data like the ones for iOS devices.

I haven't tested it yet but when I start Skype, it warns me that it uses a lot of data and to get a proper data plan, then it starts. All on 3g. Shrug?

When you try to make a call, it tells you that you can't call over 3G and you need to use wifi.

Just hit up Google voice, isn't that also free?

How do you sign out of Skype once you get it up and running? Is this thing going to kill my battery?

I just tried on my EVO with Sprint, no go. Perhaps with some hacking it will work... just as hulu and flash for the android do not play nice without some tinkering.

Installs fine through the SDK...
Chat works fine with wifi.
But if you make a call, it always wants to dial through (813) 527-2000 regardless if you dialed a phone number or skype contact. So it always needs your cellphone voice service.
FYI, I was able to complete the call to an 800 number, and I'm on AT&T.
I didn't finish the test of calling a skype contact.
You can alos install Skyp through the market if you use Market Enabler and change to VZW ID. I am not sure if it is the same as the beta or not.
EDIT, the VZW one exits with message "Can only be used on VZW phones"
I downloaded Nimbuzz and Iskoot and they suck BIG TIME. Recently, I was looking around and I found Skype Lite Beta and It works great. It's not in the MARKET! I guess, if you have a rooted phone, you can download it...I don't! But you can remove the SIM card, turn on your wifi connection and scan the application right here androlib.com
Like I said earlier, it works just fine on my non rooted Samsung Captivate. Give it a try!

Skype over 3G working in the US. Confirmed!

Hey guys.
Looks like the new Skype app won't work over 3G in the US, probably because the carriers would whine about it.
I have put together a modified version of the skype apk from the market that *should* work over 3G anywhere. Be sure to uninstall the Market app first!
Download Here!
Brilliant
Great idea, but I can't sign in. Over both WiFi and 3G I get the "can't sign in" error: "We're sorry, but we couldn't sign you in. Please try again later." The stock app works for me, though. I'll be following this thread, though, and I hope you can get it to work!
A friend of mine had the same issue, but he couldn't sign in over the Market app either. Are you able to sign in using the new Market app? Or the verizon-specific one?

Last night I was able to sign in without problem using the market app, but now it's not working either. I'll give them both a try when I get home.
Can you make this work over wifi?
I made a skype account, and indeed I cannot sign in, even with the Market app. I will update this thread later when I get home and I can try it on my Wifi at home. But i kind of doubt you wouldn't be able to sign in and view your account balance or something over 3G. I imagine they would just disable the calling itself.
Ok, I am able to sign in! Looks like it was just an issue with Skype's servers getting overloaded. Anyway - let me know if you can call over 3g!
I think this is working. I made a call from the skype app and the call went through fine and showed my skypeout number on the caller ID. Thanks!
working on my incredible, thanks!
Doesn't work on my Droid 1.

great it works Thx
works on my evo!
Amazing! Thank you so much for figuring this out. We finally have a Skype app that works for any situation!
I tried decompiling the Skype app to figure out how it excluded U.S. users from using 3g, but it was way outside my area of expertise. I couldn't figure out what triggered the switch to display the "You need to use WiFi" message. I'm glad someone was able to do it!

Can XOOM 3G make Voice call like a mobile phone

Can any one advise this as its not listen in the 3G Specs..
By default no, but there has been talks about possibly getting it to work and a lot of people have success getting Line2 (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.toktumi.line2&feature=search_result) to work on it but requires you to even find the APK somewhere or download it on another android phone and copy the APK file off it.
I am looking for a core 2 Andriod 3.0 with at least a 7.1 or 10.1 screen...
Have to be able to make call.
Any recommendations..
I don't think you're going to find that anywhere.
Good luck with that, last I checked there were no tablets out there (at least in terms of Android 3.0+) that will allow you to make phone calls with them unless you use Skype (or mod it to allow making phone calls nativity.
I have heard that Samsung Galaxy Tab does allow you to make phone calls but I haven't tested myself and don't know if the newer Tab 10.1 (not sure if it's out yet or not) will support the phone features either since the Tab 10.1 will have 3.0.
I'm sure other members on this forums will step in to correct me if I'm wrong at anything I've said here but this is what I've saw so far.
I had some limited success with nettalk and my Google Talk phone number. Could connect with my home phone but my husband said it was very echo-y. I'm wifi only so it can be done. I'm going to try Line 2.

i downloaded groove IP from the market tonite and it seems to work fine, it uses your Google voice number. No monthly fee like Line 2

you have to be logged out of Google talk on your xoom. Also, make sure that in your gv settings you have it set to google chat rather than your mobile number. Not sure if that made any sense, but they explain it step by step in the help section.
is that video calling or just voice?

How can I get the google chat to show up rather then the mobile number because I do not have that option. The only options I see are my mobile number and add this phone, nothing else. Not really sure. When I go to google voice on my browser and then click on the setting tab in upper right corner and then choose voice settings, I can then click on the phones tab, that is where I am able to choose google chat.

Dang... I just remembered a long time ago I deleted the google chat from my registered phones list because I didn't think I would ever need to use it. So that would mean I would have to add it back, but... yeah. If I try to add another phone it gives me the name to choose and I need to set a number for it, and I have no idea what the number would be for google chat. Thanks for the quick responses though! I'll try and figure out what to do next. And I have 2 nice bluetooth headsets and they do work great!

The legacy Galaxy Tab does let you use a GSM sim card and allow one to make phone calls as well as access EDGE/3G data...i helped a friend set up his tab a couple of weeks ago and can confirm this....im located in Mumbai, India...and the versions available here do allow the ability to also use it as a phone..

i believe its the kernel that is stopping it from possible.
at the momenet, honeycomb is designed to be a tablet OS, hence it didn't include the Phone's feature in the system.
for galaxy tab, (the older one), it running on Gingerbread which a Phone OS, hence it can be easily enable the phone feature.
i believe we need to wait till Ice Cream where it unite Gingerbread and Honeycomb, so that it has the phone's feature in the system and can be enabled easily.
Hey All
Just thought I'd add to this old topic. I have an Australian 3G Xoom, on the American 3.1 update, with my settings pushed back for 3G etc.
Tonight I installed the UAString/SMS mod, so that I could send SMSes (which work perfectly with Handcent, over the Telstra 3G network - just like any mobile phone would do). Then I tried calling my tablet. This also worked perfectly! The call came up, it connected, etc. I answered and this is where we hit trouble. No sound. Either way. So the Xoom doesn't have a microphone/speaker set up for sound during a call. I even tried setting the Xoom on speaker phone, but still nothing.
Any ideas? Not sure if this has been posted about before, and I thought it was pretty exciting, to be making normal calls, and SMSes (there is all this talk about Google Voice, which is useless outside of the US) on the Xoom, and this was very exciting for me.

[Q] Android: 3G video calls?

Hi!
I was wondering if there's any way to get 3G video calls on Android? I'm not talking about apps like Yahoo Messenger, GTalk, Skype, Fring etc..
Am talking about 3G video calls provided by the operator that would work with other phones that have video calling.

Android 2.3.4 supports video calls via GTalk, right? Am not talking about that. Am talking about video calls over 3G available on other phones.
You can implement video calls on Android 2.2 and above. Yahoo Messenger works on 2.2+.
But, am talking about operator calls.

Most of the non-smart new phones support this though. It's weird that someone has not written an app for this yet.
They have written an app for that, but it is required for both parties to have the app...your statements contradict themselves. Easy answer for your question...no. You can not make a 3G video call, or a 4G or wi-fi for that matter without both parties using an app to host it.
There is a standard video call protocol for 3G used by many 3G phones. This is what am looking for. Perhaps, you are not aware of real 3G video calling.

Thanks a lot for your reply.

I believe this is a limit in place by Google developers.
Here is my reasoning:
1. If you can use google chat voice feature, you will also be able to use Google Voice over Data, which means you by-pass "minutes allowed" by your mobile carrier (say you have 450 minutes airtime only....).
So if you think about it, and pair Unlimited Data Plan + Google Voice over GTalk = UNLIMITED CALL TIME!
Carriers would not be happy about this and would not carry android OS capable phones. This is the reason why I believe they only allow GTalk voice over WIFI.
=) Hope that makes sense to you.

Here you go. I had to zip it up since xda won't let me upload a*.db file. So just unzip it, transfer the file (gservices.db) to you phone, and use root explorer to move it to /data/data/com.google.android.gsf/databases/ and set the permissions to rw-rw----. Hope it works for you!
