[Q] Sprint can't activate my cyanogenmod 6 android 2.2 htc hero, HELP!!!!!!! - Hero CDMA Android Development

Hi to all xda members, 2 days ago I acquired a sprint htc hero already rooted and modded with cyanogenmod 6 android 2.2, the phone runs great everything works on it via wifi etc...., I called sprint to activate the phone and they gave me instructions, the first was to find the system update or update profile option under settings about phone, well this option does not appear on my phone u deer about phone, and I could not find it anywhere else in the settings menu, so we moved to the dial pad and the gave me three codes each starting with ## and ending with #, none of the codes opened the magic menu that the sprint engineer was expecting, at that point they concluded the phone may have a hardware issue and cannot be activated, they suspect the phone possibly was flashed for use with another service like metrics and flashed back to sprint thus causing chipsets damage, something about changing frequencies making it unactivateable by sprint, now maybe there is another way to activate a modded phone like this that I'm not aware of, so I hope u guys can show me the right way to activate with my sprint phone and data plan a rooted sprint htc hero running cyanogenmod 6 android 2.2
One last note, I have searched on xda and cyanogenmod forums with no luck, it seems his is not an issue with others, I have not found a way to mod the phones MDN and MSID which I think are the essential mods to activate the phone, and it was modes with the clockwork app
Thanks in advance
Joemango

you need to flash to a non cyanogenmod rom, such as fresh, and your ## codes will work, when you are complete, flash back to cyanogen.
edit: for a future FYI... this post really belongs in Q&A

That is correct... you'll need a sprint HTC sense rom for it to function.

Make a nandroid backup, flash NFX's stock ROM. Activate it. And then use your nandroid backup to go back to CM6.
Good Luck,
Tee Jay

wow! quick replies, should i use the Deodexed or oxed version of nfx's stock? and can i flash using ROM manager which is currently on the phone? if not then what method should i use to flash nfx first then after activation flash back cyanogenmod 6 which is already backed up on the sd card and usable with rom manager

i would use the odexed version no real differences just the odex one is going to boot a little faster

seein as you did label this [Q] this is posted in the wrong section. The fact that even after someone told you all you did was say "WOW FAST RESPONSES", Shows you have no respect for the rules. PLUS you didnt read the sticky at the top of this development section and only want to get your question answered and then go on.
I understand your new and most people cant say that..i see you just joined this month so i will give a lil slack to ya..lol(j/p man your good). I also saw you said THANKS IN ADVANCE on your first post so my apologies for that if i seem like im coming off as an arrogant *ick or something like that. Please tho in the future can you post questions in the correct forums.
AND I WOULD SUGGEST myself the odexed version, ive used it and like others it does boot faster and seems for me to run just a lil smoother. Good luck with getting your phone activated...the Hero when done right is a very amazing phone. Glad to have you among the community!

hello all, well I fixed it, the phone is activated and running caynogenmod 6!. Below are the steps i took to activate, I hope this helps others in a similar situation.
Before anything, I made a full system backup and saved on my sd card using nandroid, using a how to on the cyanogen website, just search on google for "Howto: Nandroid Backup - CyanogenMod Wiki"
1. downloaded Sprint.STOCK.2.31.651.7.ODEX_signed.zip from the net
2. plugged my sd card adapter into comp via usb and copied .zip file to root directory
3. put sd card back in phone and turned on phone.
4. ran ROM Manager and chose Install from SD Card
5. Chose the zip file, chose the "wipe" option, did not choose the "backup" option and hit Ok
6. The phone reboots into recovery mode (RA) and automatically installed the ROM i downloaded.
7. in RA mode, choose reboot system now
8. The new ROM fired up with no problems
9. I called Sprint and activated the phone using the update profile option under menu->settings->about phone
10. once activation was complete I wend to android market on the phone and downloaded/installed ROM manager free edition
11. I ran rom manager and went to backup/restore chose manage and restore backups chose the backup containing cyanogenmod 6 and pressed ok.
12. when restore completed i chose restart system (in RA mode) and voila, done, fini, as a last step i tested phone and data connections, all was fine.
one last note, I did all the rom manipulations with the phone on a wall charger to ensure power during these operations.
I hope others find this helpful, Im sorry if i posted in a the wrong forum, hopefully an admin can move this thread to a more suitable forum.
thanks for all your help, I look forward to contributing more, email me questions, comments, etc....

I just can't understand why any employee of sprint would even care. I go into my local Cellular South store and assist their employees with rooting their phones. They love me and can't understand why Cellular South doesn't offer this as a service.

I accidentally took a Hero and an Evo to the sprint store rooted with fully themed modded roms. The guy noticed instantly, he was cool and we talked about modding phones for a good 30mins. Then the next day my friends data wouldnt work so he called sprint and he accidentally told the lady the Hero was rooted, she joked about it and laughed and then told us how to fix the data and even how to get a brand new phone if we wanted to.

How do you get a brand new phone, lol ? PM me plz...

Just google search the sprint ruu and run it from pc. get the .5 and run universal androot. set up your phone and androot gives you access to reflash cm6 with the use of RomManager by clockwork mod.

[ROM-DEV] HTC Sense Froyo Android 2.2.1 Odexed mtdpartitons Development Discussion.

I've posted a new thread with a new rom. No repartitioning needed unless you want to also has the wifi patch and several other small fixes built in.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9127297#post9127297
Continue below if you want but most of the progress will happen to the above rom
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
We > HTC
This is a development thread for MDPI HTC Sense Android 2.2 Froyo for the Heroc.
Please refrain from useless comments. If you wish to post something non dev related then post in the user thread.
The active developers here are nfinitefx45, s0be, Decad3nce, beezy420 and myself.
This is not a user help thread. If you don't understand whats going on please don't flash this. Wait until a more proper release is up. If you have questions on how to use firerats method then read the following thread.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754805
If you understand whats going on or have used Firerats mtd repartitioner before then give it a try.
This is not some custom rom we are pushing. We are trying to give you what the carriers and htc won't.
This is based off of the leaked HTC Gratia rom. With some libs from cyanogenmod 6.X to make things work. Wifi fix from the eris port.
What it has:
Odexed apps/frameworks
HTC Sense running on Android 2.2
Includes all Sense apps and widgets
Google apps
What works:
Calls
3G
SMS/MMS (160 char limit)
Bluetooth (Pairs but no audio yet)
Accelerometer
Network location/Agps
USB tether
LiveWallpaper from the Market
All HTC Sense apps/widgets
All Google Apps
WiFi (See this post for fix http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9108274&postcount=197)
After flashing the wifi fix you might have to follow the directions in this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9113899&postcount=202
What does not work:
GPS
Camera (distorted pic)
Bluetooth Audio
The way your going to flash this is by using Firerats mtd repartitioner.
Instructions: This will work with either amon_ra or clockwork recovery
Step 0: Before you begin nandroid!! You'll prob want to go back to your main rom unless you only use your hero to make calls and sms/mms and browse over 3g.
Step 1: Download Firerats recovery repartitioner. Link
Step 2: Download Firerats boot.img repartitioner. Link
Step 3: Download mtdpartmap.txt. Link
Step 4: Download the ROM
http://www.mediafire.com/?1a621tzxd25au6g
Step 5: Place the 4 downloaded files on the root of your sdcard
Step 6: Reboot into your phone into recovery
Step 7: Wipe data/factory reset
Step 8a: Flash FR-recovery-v1.5.3-CustomMTD_S.zip
8b: Wipe data/factory reset
Step 9: While still in recovery reboot back into recovery by doing any of the following.
1: "adb reboot recovery" from your computer
2: pull the battery then replace the battery and hold down home and power.
3: if your using clockwork recovery go to advanced and chose reboot recovery
Step 10: Flash the ROM
a: Flash this patch for Wifi: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/6022412/SenseFroyo-Heroc-Wifi_patch_S.zip
Step 11: Flash optional Uncapped froyo kernel (691 if you have trouble with overclocking)
Step 12: Flash FR-boot-v1.5.3-CustomMTD_S.zip
Step 13: Reboot
Optional stuff:
If you want to flash another kernel use the Uncapped kernels. After flashing them you will need to reflash FR-boot-v1.5.3-CustomMTD_S.zip before rebooting.
Warnings/Notes:
If you want to use live wallpapers download them from the market. The ones included don't work well if they do at all.
Camera will open and give a garbled image. It could be a simple fix but I haven't figured it out yet.
GPS does not work. It will show that it's on in settings but your location is coming from network location over 3G. You won't see the gps icon in the notification bar.

That guy works for Sprint, LOL
Guys forget about those idiots and keep up the goodwork, thanks for developing this!!
I dont have time to go through flashing firefrat and all that. But can someone plz let me know the following.
Abount of available RAM:
Does it have the Default live wallpapers?
Any bloatware?
Notifiactaion LEDs
And thats really it.
Plus, has anyone tried using this or the last one from the other post with that Quick Desk app? It works but i causes the launcher to restart quite often.
This hasnt happen on my CM6 and it hasnt happend on any of Zen's roms ive used before?
Is there, or can there soon be, and option to keep the home app or any certain app in memory like in CM6? That would fix my issue?
Plz and Ty

You're going to NEED to take the time to run the Firerat mod to free up the necessary space to run this ROM.
Takes under 5 minutes to flash the zips directly from your phone and reboot successfully.

Everything is flashable from the phone. Make sure all files are located in the root of your SD card, though in Clockwork, it really doesn't matter where they are stored. Play it safe and put them on the root anyway.
Thanks

*Immediate Help Needed*

Hello everyone. I just purchased an Evo Shift from a guy on craigslist who had this phone working with Cyanogenmod 7 and gingerbread. We got his phone cleared off and I went to have it added to my account. Sprint is saying I need to have it back to stock to get the phone programed to their network.
The last tech that looked at it said there is no "Update PRL" on the phone now.
So, as of right now, I have an $180 paper weight, lol.
If someone could help me, I would greatly appreciate it. I've never had a rooted phone, so this is all foreign to me. Thanks in advance!

Welcome to xda xdbnewb,
You can find a stock ROM that will allow you to provision the phone in the Evo shift section. Until you are more familiar with using a rooted phone the easiest way to install it would be through the ROM manager app, all you should have to do is download the ROM to your sd card and then tell ROM manager to flash it.
EVO Shift Forum
Stock ROM - Version 2.72.651.2
Don't forget to go through orientation here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmvCpR45LKA
THanks for the reply. I downloaded the stock rom to the SD card. And now it's telling me that the SD card needs to be mounted. I've searched the phone and have no clue how to go about doing this.
Thanks again for your help!

[Q] now that I have root, is it different to get CWM?

easier perhaps? I read about a rom manager you download from the market...
Thanks to what efforts everyone contributes here, I've found after getting out of soft brick, I managed to get root. And I'm almost happy with the handset, now that I got root explorer to work. It works best as a browser for the 20 gigs of junk on my sd card, I've found.
What I have is the SGH-i727 att branded, returned to stock, 2.3.5, my kernel is 2.6.35.11 also I flashed something in the i777 forum, is the reason for "returned to stock". My handle could be adjusted to "stupidbiker". And I've been properly scolded.
So what's a good way to get clockwork mod in my situation?
And I don't care about a warranty or a counter, or does the counter do other bad things?
And a link for operating clockwork mod? Everyone here can push three buttons except me! LOL I've pulled it off a few times on accident, but I bet in here somewhere there is a correct procedure outlined for operating clockworkmod. A link to that would be way cool.
Wow I'm stupid. K. Thanks.
This is question and answer right? I got lots of questions!
Once I get clockworkmod in the device with all the colors, I'm gonna flash a rom, the ice cream rocket I saw, also I want to test CM7, I'm in L.A. and in the LTE area and looks like I could provide input.
I'm using search, but if someone plants a good link it would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

download rom manager, install cwm from that, select tmobile galaxy s2 when asked.
see what I found
First you need to flash Clockworkmod Recovery. Then you place the zip on your SDcard, do a Nandroid backup through clockworkmod Recovery (not necessary but highly, highly recommended... especially if you have never done this before.) Then select install zip from SD card, find the .Zip file and run it and you should be golden.
What is nandroid? I use Mybackup Pro. Same sort of stuff right? I'm getting close to getting my arms around everything....

Thank you for such a quick reply. I am on AT&T. Why would I select Tmobile?
"because that's the one that works"
is an answer I can accept. I'm not fussy just stupid.
Thank you!
I have successfully flashed ClockworkMod Recovery using ROM Manager. I'm so pleased I'm gonna get premium. I see directions! It shows a button for flashing a custom rom that I store on my SD card? Do I dare?
I picked the tmobile thing and so far so good. I got data and just tried a phone call. Happy.
I will follow the other threads now. If a moderator thinks people will get more stupid reading my new thread they may delete it.
I soft bricked
figured out Odin enough to flash back to stock
got root
went to market and installed ROM Manager
turned on wifi as ROM Manager recommended
after a good hookup, I flashed ClockworkMod recovery
Surfed the web, made a phone call, took a picture, uploaded to facebook
Looks like I'm all good.
I'm feeling ready...

apparently they are very similar (but dont get crazy and start installing the tmobile gs2 kernel/roms) - also there is no skyrocket version yet...
but yes cwm does work perfectly from rom manager when you select tmobile gs2
i did this myself the other day... works fine..
just download rom manager, have fun.. good luck
hey ****enbiker would you say your kinda ''noobish'' when it comes to this ? lol I'm just super scared to do this. To avoid voiding my warranty I was even thinking of just saving a check and getting a nexus s to fool around with, but if your new to this and would say ''ALMOST anyone can do it'' I'd say I might be game. I just would like to learn somethings from newer rooters rather than annoy/piss off the Vets!
I have screwed up every phone I got my hands on so not a noob exactly. I am at present using cm7 and considering the new kernel released this morning. What's holding me back is how well it works and how easily I screw up and screen rotation work around is good enough so why flash and set up again... oh I will flash again but just got it all restored back and gotta take it to work tomorrow ...
Yeah pretty much if I can do it anyone can. I really am ignorant compared to a programmer or developer. But not many noobs have broken as much stuff as I have!

I am having trouble getting CWM to boot on device start-up with the Vol Up Key, is this how you do it or am I doing it wrong?
I can easily get to it from choosing "Reboot into Recovery" from ROM manager but I want to make sure I can get in without Android in case I need to do a full NAND recovery.
Thanks

YouTube stutters on CM
Okay after I finally settled in with version 4 I have figured out that version 3 it was okay YouTube did not stutter or jerk, it is this new Da_G's kernel when the video went to hell. I remember the problem appeared in version 3 after flashing Da_G's kernel.
I have not tried any other kernel beside Da_G's with version 4. And YouTube is skippy jerking all to our dismay here. Or there, where ever I was to report this, beg pardon.

edit:
I see you don't have to press the power button?
I always begin that way, I press all three at once.
Volume up, volume down, and power.
After it buzzes three times I keep the volume up and down held, but let go of the power button.
I keep the volume up and down held until I see a logo on the screen. Then I let go of the phone and it boots into the scarey black screen with dos writing and you have to navigate with the hardware buttons.
That's how I've been doing it and it puts me into cwm recovery straight from putting the battery back in, every time.
If a true noob is reading this, you're dropping in after I've rooted and then obtained clockworkmod from the market, granted it superuser permissions, and then, after getting past the advertisements, you select to flash clockworkmod.
Also you'll see discussion of not getting a signal and getting an APN. Before you try CyanogenMod or CM7, which is what I use, you take your handset that has a working signal, and download an app from the market called "APN backup and restore" and do a backup of your APN. (not for those who refuse to populate the phone with a chip) (also not for those who don't have a working wifi readily available) Now make sure you have a copy of that on the other chip. The Skyrocket has an internal SD and also an external SD which ATT turns out is too cheap to put one in there when they sell it...
Make sure you have ApnBackupRestore folder with it's xml content on both chips.
Then go to CM7, in the op, get version 4, then go to the kernel thread and get Da_G's kernel, and put them on BOTH sd cards (so you won't have trouble finding it LOL)
And there you have it. Yet another blue collar attempt at helping folks that are smarter than I am that aren't as brave as I am!
Pull the battery, and apparently only hold the two volume buttons after putting the battery back in, never tried it that way! Wipe Data/Factory reset, find the rom and install it, find the kernel and flash that zip as well (install it, trying to help with lingo) reboot, then hook up to wifi, download APN backup/restore from the market (your phone will sync and load it for you when you log in with your google gmail to set up the handset. Run the APN backup and restore app and enjoy CyanogenMod!

I don't know for sure, about the vol. up/dn.. but when I rooted my phone, the only way that I could get it to work was power & volume DOWN only. The three button just got me no where.

I'm back -I've been absent a long while (years)

The last smart device I bought was a Dell x51v. I've never wanted a smartphone before because the x51v did everything I wanted thanks to XDA Developers, from whom I learned how to flash it to WM6.1 (yes, I donated to the developer)!!
Well, my x51v FINALLY died. It started acting up one day several weeks ago - the next day it became a brick all on its own. Now I figure it's about time to catch up After all, I did get my money's worth out of that wonderful x51v
So, after deciding a tablet was too big for me (even a 7"), I did considerable research, and ordered an unlocked i897 I also ordered some dummy sims because I plan to use it only as a PDA (at first anyway) and a 32G mSDHC.
The Captivate should arrive in about a week, then I can finally start enjoying Android.
So I plan to be lurking and learning again. Thanks guys
Chas
you'll want to read most of the links in my signature. how to flash... xda user guide.. short/one word answers..
check the stickies in the forums (hopefully you know this)
xda is available on your phone using the XDA app (free or donate) from android market, or on tapatalk forum app (many forums one app) tapatalk also has a chrome extension now to notify you of PMs on your forums too!
remember if you get it and it's not loaded with android gingerbread 2.3.X, you will need to research gingerbread bootloaders.
cheers and good luck!
Yep - I've been devouring stickies ever since I made my post above. I'll read your signature links, too. I've learned a lot already, and have been taking notes for reference when my new Cappy first arrives. After installing dummy sim and charging battery, the second thing on my to do list is identify OS. The first thing is to check IMIE# to make sure it's okay.
Thanks
Welcome - still have my 50v and been at xda since those days as well. Captivate has a great audience, you'll enjoy it.

no need for a dummy sim. i have 2 captivates one with one without. no issues.
backing up IMEI info is SUPER RECOMENDED!!!
get adb (sig)
connect phone ( with usb debug mode enabled)
type
Code:
[LEFT]dd if=/dev/block/stl3 of=/sdcard/sdext/efs.rfs[/LEFT]
go to phone internal sdcard and copy efs.rfs to computer.
after rooting (superOneClick root program), also recommended to just straight copy all files out of folder /efs/ (imei folder) to pc as well just for multiple backups multiple ways.
then feel free to carrier unlock your phone with the app " Galaxy_S unlock" from android market. it creates backups of IMEI too, since it has to play with those files, but do the other backups i recommended also.

my dumb cell phone is AT&T, so I planned on using it's sim card to see if I can get official AT&T upgrade to 2.3.5, which came out last month (but I don't have a data plan, so it probably won't work . . . worth a try though.)

ATT doesnt OTA update the captivates... they use samsung keis windows program. and it sucks balls. once you flash custom... it only sometimes works.
thats why we use the Odin One click packages to flash stock roms (or other packages) to update the phones. Captivate > Development > Stickie > Odin One Click Master Collection (ATT). stock rom flashes that can be done at any time with any windows PC. you can even choose versions that are pre-rooted and have CWM installed!!
NOTE: stock sucks too!.. of course try it out.. see what gingerbread is... then get ready to get bored and jealous of everyone else and their fancy features...
CWM lets you flash things on the phone from the phone.
Odin lets you flash different packages (of same stuff) from PC.there are 2 odins. odin One-Clicks.. pre-packaged. one button.. click it.
and odin flasher.. you can choose what and where to flash files on the phone from pc
with a couple extra button presses at boot, you can boot into the CWM flasher to install full roms/ mods/ kernels or modems before android boots!~
On samsung galaxy phones we are usually able to build CWM into the kernel. (Captivate always) so IGNORE anything you read about using Rom Manager to get CWM *outdated/not needed for us*
I have lots more reading & learning to do. After all, the Captivate will be my first Linux/Android device. It will be a week before it arrives, so I'll keep on reading - I'm still learning the acronyms.
Thanks especially for the heads up about Kies!!
no prob. my cappy was my first android/linux experience too. january 12 last year, found xda by the end of the month..

Be careful about putting your SIM into a smartphone without a data package. ATT has been known to just automatically add in a data plan for you.
After some studying, I created a tentative plan for my new Captivate when it arrives. Keeping my goals in mind, and remembering this is my first Linux and Android experience, would you please review and comment on my plan, and maybe provide some one-words to help me out where necessary?
Goals:
Use phone only as a PDA
Backup stock ROM
install Gingerbread 2.3.5
delete bloat
tryout some added apps
use PDA for awhile (weeks)
consider upgrading to an XDA HC or ICS ROM
Tentative procedure upon receiving phone:
-DO NOT install sim
-DO NOT mount mmSD card
-Charge battery fully
-identify OS installed
-root phone with SuperOneClick v2.3.3
-backup phone
-unroot phone
-play around with phone - get familiar with it
-root phone
-install ODIN One Click 2.3.5 with BL (post#2) and CWM Injected Kernel from Boog (i897UCKI2) - I bought the phone unlocked, so I don't really know what BL it has.
-install ROM Manager to allow easy boot into CWM
-delete bloat/unwanted apps
-mount mmSD
-tryout apps; enjoy new PDA
TIA

I am concerned about this. My dumb phone is an AT&T GoPhone, and the AT&T clerk told me AT&T no longer requires GoPhone customers with smartphones to buy a data package. But Captivate is not one of their GoPhone choices . . . so I wonder . . . I guess I'll find out some day when I'm ready.

there is no reason to un-root phone unless taking in for warranty work. (no warranty anyway).
Rom Manager is SUPER OUTDATED FOR CAPTIVATE. and is NOT for kernels with CWM built into it.
easy way to get into cwm is the 3 button combo. hold both volume before holding power to turn on. keep all 3 held for 5 seconds.custom roms have an option in the power menu to reboot to cwm, or just reboot, ect.. hands down the best way to get into cwm. and one the the most commonly added features to ANY custom rom.
there are many ways to "backup" your phone:
- full system dumps via ADB (can be done on any phone/ not that common on captivate)
- full nandroid backups inside CWM recovery (super common and best back-up/restore utility)
- application/settings backup via titanium backup [root app] GREAT for restoring your apps with all their settings, your contacts, alarms, desktop settings, user dictionary, ect between different roms!!
i have never ended up needing my first stock backup of "before i screwed around". thats what the odin one clicks are for. take you back to that stock point.
HOWEVER!!! HIGHLY RECOMMEND BACKING UP YOUR EFS folder. search backing up efs. adb method the best. efs stores your IMEI. you dont want this to ever get corrupt without a backup!!!
KI2 stock is alright but older.. but there werent many newer choices with cwm already, so i am making a KK4 with bootloaders and corn CWM kernel for you. uploading now.
Thanks so much. I had not realized how critical IMIE data was until I just read about backing it up!! You had mentioned it before, but it didn't sink in until now.
And a KK4 for me, what service! Thanks.

It will be added to the master collection once tested by OP of thread.

My new Cappy arrived this morning!!
yesterday I installed it's drivers and Android SDK_r16_windows on my Win7PC.
today I charged it's battery to 100% then rooted it with SuperOneClick v2.3.3 (worked great on the first try)
then I backedup EFS as tar to my PC with EFS Pro v1.2.6 (tried first to backup to PC as img, but it locked up twice. then I tried tar; failed the first time, and success the second time)
Now I will play around with it
Hiccup: My VolumeUp button is nonfunctional. Now I know why 3-button boot doesn't work. So, I got RMA from Samsung, unrooted the phone, did factory reset, and will mail it in for warranty repair.
2/23 PS: it's mailed.
2/28 PS: it arrived at Samsung Service Center in Plano, TX
3/02 PS: it shipped from Plano repaired & updated
My Captivate arrived again today. Samsung updated the ROM from 2.2 to 2.3.5 and repaired the volume switch under warranty.
But now SuperOneClick v2.3.3 won't root the phone (it worked with 2.2). It freezes on step 7 just like it does for the myriad of commentors on shortfuse.
Any Ideas?

Purchased a galaxy s3 for straight talk with cyanogenmod on it.

I bought a galaxy s3 for straighttalk from some one cuz it was really cheap. I want to remove cyanogenmod from it because the camera doesn't work and I can't save pictures. They didn't back up though so when I factory reset it, it brings it right back to cyanogenmod. How do I get the original OS for the s3 back on it? Im new to this kind of stuff so I didn't even know where to look on the forums here. And the person I bought it from is no help, I think they didn't even know how they really did it. Can some one help me or point me in the right direction please?
Sincerely,
Unmarked civillian

I need to know if you have the Sprint version (S960L) or the Verizon version (S968C). Most likely you have the S968C.
When you tell me your device model number, I can link you to your firmware and you can flash that via Odin.

If you want to flash the stock firmware, you will need to go to Sammobile.com and enter your model number in the search feature there. It will lead you to your firmware, download it on PC.
Make sure you have installed "USB drivers for Samsung phones", you can find them with a Google search, or if you already have Kies installed then you've got the drivers.
On the device, go to system settings>developer options(if you don't see this in settings, you need to go to the "About Phone" option, scroll down to the "Build Number" and tap it at least 7 times to enable Developer Options). In developer options, turn on "USB debugging".
Charge your battery to at least 75%.
Once charged, press and hold the volume down+home+power buttons, at the caution screen, press up to enter download mode.
Open Odin(make sure Kies is closed and isn't running in the background, it interferes with Odin), connect the device to PC with device in download mode. If the device is recognized, you'll get a colored COMM# box. If you don't have that, try a different USB port, make sure your cable is the stock cable.
In Odin, select the AP or PDA button(older Odin has PDA button, newer Odin has AP button). Go to where you downloaded and stored the firmware on your PC, select it.
When you get back to the Odin screen, make sure the only options that are checked are auto reboot and F. reset time.
Click start, when it is done, you will get a green PASS! and the device will reboot, go through setup wizard and enjoy your device.
you are the true MVP of the internet tonight! thanks so much for breaking it down for me haha ive asked all over, here and reddit and few other sites, no one would help me like that! the download for the firmware is going to be an hour from sammobile since im not paying for membership haha but i have work in the morning so ill let it run while i sleep, and do everything in the morning. ill post here tomorrow either in the morning or at night after work and let you know how it went! once again thanks again!

Try booting to stock recovery and do a factory reset and wipe cache partition in recovery then reboot.
i had auto reboot and f reset time and PDA checked. booting it in stock recovery, factory reset, and wipe cache partition worked! thanks so much for all your help! i have one more question for ya though. the reason i wanted to delete cyanogenmod is because the camera wouldnt load and i couldnt save images and i wasnt able to go online using data, i could only use wifi. so when out all i could do was call and text, and the mms didnt work. any clue as to why?

The ROMs were actually built for the Verizon S3(SCH-I535), they are 4G devices, this makes them require a SIM card to regulate the 4G data they use, this makes our device require a CDMA LTE SIM(Verizon 4G LTE SIM or Straight Talk CDMA LTE SIM from the BYOP kit, the LTE version, not the GSM AT&T/T-Mobile kit). I'm actually the one that figured out that a SIM was needed for the ROMs to work. I can explain in detail, but I'll keep it short instead.
Even though our device is 3G and doesn't require a SIM under normal circumstances, with the SIM inserted in our device with those ROMs, we then have working mobile data and MMS, sometimes it requires setting APNs in the ROM along with using the SIM to get stock MMS working, otherwise, MMS would only work when using a 3RD party app for MMS.
A lot of people bricked this device trying to figure out why mobile data wasn't working before I discovered this SIM dependency. I've actually worked with a few developers trying to remove the SIM dependency so our device could use the ROMs without a SIM but nothing works, anything done to remove the dependency, kills all chances of connectivity, even call and text. I also helped with creating the first and only TWRP custom recovery specifically compiled for our d2tfnvzw(Tracfone on Verizon network Straight Talk S3) device. The other recoveries are actually d2vzw(Verizon Wireless S3) but they work on our device also, just not specifically.
The Straight Talk S3 can use the Verizon recoveries and ROMs because it is actually a rebranded Verizon S3(SCH-I535) and actually has the I535 model number stamped on our motherboards and other hardware inside our device, the only difference is that the 4G capability was disabled in the radio(no, using the 4G SIM will not give you 4G data). It is not "similar" to the Verizon S3, it IS the Verizon S3 modified for Straight Talk.
I can actually get you set up with some very good 5.1.1 Lollipop custom ROMs packed with features including working camera(we have marshmallow but front camera isn't working, that is always an issue with new ROMs because stock camera is closed source software, developers are not allowed to use it, they have to piece the coding together from scratch so it takes a while to fix), if you can get a used, previously activated Verizon 4G SIM($3-5 on eBay, used SIMs are better than new SIMs, new SIM gives aggravating issues) or Straight Talk BYOP LTE SIM. The ROMs are MUCH better than the stock JB 4.1.2 firmware. Let me know and I can get you setup and you won't even need the PC to do any of it. It can all be done with apps and your mobile browser. Using WiFi to download on the device instead of mobile data to download the ROM files you'll need, the apps that will flash the files you need are very simple to use. After the files are downloaded all you need is a click here and a click there and about 30 minutes of time and you'll be running something much better than stock with everything working as it should.
I have a guide posted here for flashing CM/CM based ROMs on our device and how to set up SIM and APNs, along with precautionary steps for your protection and troubleshooting steps for data issues after flashing the ROM and how to restore data connectivity if you do something wrong along the way.
If you do a google search using our model number, you'll find stuff everywhere that I have posted about this model number.
wow thats impressive stuff! i wish i could learn to do all that haha. You have ROMs that would run on that by chance? The ST S5 is the Verizon S5 developer edition, the same as the ST S3 is the Verizon S3, the ST S5 is a Verizon rebrand also. Fortunately since it's a developer edition, that means it has an unlocked bootloader so that means you can safely flash the device with custom ROMs if there are any for the Verizon S5, I haven't looked but I'm sure it has ROMs(the other Verizon devices have locked bootloader and they will NEVER be able use anything but stock and modified stock ROMs, they can't use true custom ROMs like Cyanogen because it hard bricks the device because of the locked bootloader).

Sorry, I misunderstood you, if your S5 came from AT&T then it is AT&T. I was saying that the Straight Talk version of the S5 is a Verizon S5 dev edition. AT&T is not. It will need to use the AT&T S5 ROMs if any exist.
There are a plethora of ROMs for the S3, they are all different so you'll have to check them out for yourself. OctOS 5.1.1 is my favorite and is the most stable and has everything working including front camera. I will have to link you to my copy of it though because it is no longer available for download on XDA. I'm using OctOS marshmallow right now but front camera isn't working yet.
To find the other ROMs, view this forum in a PC or mobile browser, find the Compact tab, click it, then find the Verizon SIII on the list, click it and it will take you to the Verizon S3 forum, then you'll see an Original Android Development and an Android Development subforum there. The ROMs can be found in threads in those two forums, use ONLY the ROMs that specifically say "d2vzw" in their names, do not use anything that says stock or TW or anything that mentions locked bootloader, modem, firmware, Safestrap recovery or Fashfire, that stuff is specifically for the Verizon S3 ONLY and will brick your device, read the threads, the first post in each ROM thread will list the ROM features and instructions for flashing(ignore these instructions and use the ones I link you to instead), but you'll need to be rooted and have custom recovery installed(my guide will explain how to get custom recovery).
Install the Towelroot app on your device, open it, tap the "make it rain" button and you'll be rooted.
Then go to Playstore and install SuperSU, open it to update the binaries.
Then, once you've found the ROM you want and its' compatible Gapps package(Google apps, the thread should mention which one you need), download them and put them both on extsdcard.
Then follow this thread to get a custom recovery installed, flash the ROM and Gapps and setup SIM/APNs. It is a very long guide but it is detailed step by step as simple as I could make it. Pay attention to the warnings and do the things I listed as safety measures for future reference.

Cool, just don't forget to use Towelroot or Cydia Impactor to root the S3 then install SuperSU, that must be done before you do anything else.
Let me know if you need anything.

Just rooted and downloaded supersu, I tried to pm you but its saying you aren't accepting them. I have one last question before I head to bed. I just realised, I can still flash a rom in here without the 4g sim still just won't have service, is that correct?

Sorry, I forgot that I blocked messages from the public because I was getting too many people asking for help. I have it set to only allow friends and forum administrators. Oops!!
There are older builds of Kit Kat 4.4.4 that can be flashed without SIM and everything works, but they probably aren't available for download anymore.
Yes, you can flash the ROMs just fine, you'll still have call and text, you'll just need to put the SIM in when you get it and reboot the device then set up the SIM and APNs like my guide says and then reboot again and you should be good to go, make sure you backup your IMEI(NVdata backup) like the guide says also, then be careful when you flash. If you flash and you lose all service including calling then don't do anything until you get in touch with me, if you make the wrong move from there, you'll make a mess that will be difficult to fix.
