[Q] How do I get out of HBOOT on Evo 4G? - General Questions and Answers

Hey all, huge fan of the site! I've seem to put myself into a situation, in an act of impatience,
-I simply copied PC36IMG.zip to the root of my sdcard.
-Then I rebooted the phone into HBOOT, and it did its thing.
But now it just keeps rebooting HBOOT. Have I bricked my phone? I would greatly appreciate the help. Thanks so much guys.

I am also in HBOOT
Had and error when flashing Cyn ROM through ROM Manager. I am now unable to use the recovery. Basically just stuck

Almost bricked

Yeah. ROM Manager and ROM Manager Premium just hosed my phone. Luckily I'm geeky enough to have done the Factory Reset on the phone. I still couldn't book into HTC Sense. Just the HBOOT menu. So I surfed around, found the Stock PC32img.zip and flashed it twice (1st time Failed PU error). Then it finally booted.
Now it's like a brand new phone with the S-OFF still intacted. Now I'm going to reflash the unrEVOked 3.21 and get that back up. Then I will copy over my saved Nandroid Backups and restore the phone to the beginning of Oct (my last backup). Then finish adding in all the extras since. Oh... and also getting a refund on ROM Manager Premium since I'm still in the 24 hour refund period. Screw that app! I followed the instructions perfectly and BAM! Almost bricked phone.

new EVO(dec.2010) cant flash roms or nand restore help!

i've had 2 android phones before, i must've flashed roms 50+ times in the past nevertheless im paranoid enough to always follow procedure by confirming on written step by step instructions. just now with this new evo i bought a couple weeks ago im having problems flashing roms, im positive to be unrevokedly rooted forever with full nand acces. tried cm6.1 got message "cant symlink" "error line 31" process aborted. retried unsuccesfully, redownloaded rom, retried failed again, tried other roms like virus and bakedsnack every attempt unsuccesful with SAME error. of course i performed a nandroid backup which i've been trying to restore since the first failed attempt but though it completes seemingly without problem phone gets stuck on "htc evo 4g" screen. i use amon ra recovery 1.8.0, always careful to have enough juice. have hboot 2.0.2 S-off. help me, pretty please.
ow! I feel good! ta-nana-nana- nana!
hooray! for me and all who are helped by this short thread in the future! our solution is right here, search this within xda:
"[ROOT][GUIDE] HBoot 2.02 S-OFF - Fresh Like Pine Cones Edition"
Im new here so i cant post links, we're concerned only with the :
"PC36IMG_Recovery.zip" that's in the thread.
got this after 6 hours researching all internet. it seems many of our new EVO'S require this custom RA recovery to flash roms or restore nandroids; just rename it to PC36IMG.zip, place it in sdcard, power off, start fastboot, wait a few seconds it will prompt you for installation, press up volume for yes, when its done choose reboot. after that its flashing as usual yipay!

Inspire 4G Reverting on boot

I have a really strange issue and I've done everything I can think of to fix it to no avail. I'm hoping someone here can give me a few pointers.
I'm working on a Inspire 4G for someone. The issue is that the phone reverts to a specific state no matter what I do. For example, if I wipe the phone, the phone boots back up to Froyo with all of his stuff on it. If I try loading an RUU or IMG file (Froyo or Gingerbread), it will "take" but boot to Froyo with all of his stuff on it. It's almost like it wipes itself and loads this image out of nowhere...
Another weird thing, which may or may not be related, is that I see a weird download in his notification tray. Apparently, the file named "WinBej2Setup.exe" was downloaded twice. I did some research on that and everything I see points to some kind of malware for a Windows PC.
Any and all help is appreciated.
Forgive me if this sounds stupid, but you do have S-off correct? I'm not sure about the weird file, have you tried to access it? Also what other roms have you tried to flash? Also what method did you use to root?

I don't have S-OFF. Here's all the bootloader info:
ACE PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-0.85.0019
MICROP-0438
RADIO-26.06.04.06_m
Emmc-boot

As for the file, I'm not sure where it's located. I can only see the notifications that they have finished downloading.
As for the history on the phone, I really can't say much since it's not my personal phone. The person I'm doing this for said he tried to root it using the ACE Hack kit and "some ADB commands" and failed. That's all the information I was given.
At this point, I can load anything to the phone but it will just revert to Froyo in the exact state that it's currently in.
For example, I just tried installing Gingerbread via the official RUU file. It goes through the entire process without a hiccup. Then it reboots and takes forever to load; but when it does, it's back on Froyo with all the owners files...
Personally I would root it, make sure s off, and make sure to format the memory card the corrrect way also.
Then I would install a custom rom.
And the file you speak of is also a game called bejewled. My girl loves that game.

This p-o-s I'm addicted to, and my woman is jealous of.
Reformat the sd card then do an official upgrade thru HTC. Go to the website and download the Gingerbread RUU and HTC Sync. If this doesn't work, complete the root process as suggested.Tell your friend you can't install exe files on Android. They need to be apk files or zip files if installed thru recovery.

I appreciate the advice guys, but I think you guys are overlooking what I'm trying to say... I've already tried running the official upgrades from HTC. The RUU says it's completed fine, but on reboot, I'm back on Froyo with all the same stuff on it.
I've even gone as far as extracting the IMG file out of the RUU and loading it through the bootloader. If I do this, it does the same thing-- says everything loaded fine but reverts on boot back to Froyo in the same state it was in prior.
I can temp root the phone using psneuter but that's about it. I have no idea how I'm going to achieve S-OFF if everything I do is wiped on reboot...
What I'm wondering is if there is a way to lock the entire phone down in a state where nothing can be changed; and if so, is there a way to disable this feature.
Are you sure you do not have a file on the root of the card named PD98IMG.zip? You may be installing this every time the phone boots.
How can you install a non RUU ROM when you have s-on?
Something does not make sense here. Also the exe file you talked about has no use on android as android can do nothing with it. Where do you actually see it?
Go back to square 1. What ROM is on the phone now? Do you have clockwork installed?
I'm not sure how to many different times/ways I can explain the same thing. The phone is on stock AT&T Froyo 2.2.1 (1.80.502.3). Currently, there is no custom recovery and it's not rooted.
The issue is that the phone always reverts (almost like it's doing a nandroid restore in the background) during boot to Froyo 2.2.1 (1.80.502.3) with all his stuff on it.
I've installed Gingerbread 2.3.3 (2.47.502.7) via the official AT&T RUU file
I've extracted the PD98IMG.zip from the Gingerbread 2.3.3 (2.47.502.7) RUU and loaded it via bootloader
I've installed Froyo 2.2.1 (1.80.502.3) via the official AT&T RUU file.
I've extracted the PD98IMG.zip from the Froyo 2.2.1 (1.80.502.3) RUU and loaded it via bootloader
I've done a factory reset from within the phone
I've deleted user data & cache with the stock recovery
After performing each and everyone of these steps, the phone hangs on the white HTC screen while booting and eventually boots up to Froyo 2.2.1 (1.80.502.3) along with all the guys stuff on it.

I agree completely; however, the issue I'm running into very unusual. With that being said, I'm trying to point out anything unusual that I notice with the phone. This file most likely has absolutely nothing to do with the problem I'm encountering, but I mentioned it just in case.

I wish this was the case; however, this wouldn't explain why all his stuff is still on the phone... The only time there is a PD98IMG.zip on the sdcard is when I put it there. Even so, I would have to boot the phone into bootloader mode and go through the prompts to get it take. More so, even if I did do this, it would just revert upon rebooting (hints the problem).
I appreciate the help but I think the problem is a little deeper than what has be presented.
That clears it up for me. You obviously know what you are doing. You mentioned "wipe" a few times which confused me. Didn't think there was a way to actually wipe it without a recovery installed. Sounds like one helluva confusing issue there. Goodluck.
Its always going to revert back to the previous state because its still s-on.
You need to get s-off before anything will change.

This I know is not true-- You can load signed code with S-ON. If what you said was true there would be no way to load an official RUU or OTA...
I appreciate the help, but telling me to get S-OFF (which I've clearly stated that I'm unable to do) is not getting me anywhere.
Is the original ROM branded? Have you tried installing a PD98IMG.zip from a gold card? Just a thought.

[Q] Using official HTC unlocker for Sensation, Help installing Cyanogen

I recently "unlocked" my HTC Sensation 4g through HTC's official method. However, after successfully unlocking it, my phone is still set on S-On. Because of this, I am not recognized as a superuser, and so I cant boot into Clockwork Mod Recovery. Can anyone who knows more than me about this please give me a hand? This is my first time attempting any of this.
to make sure i understand this correctly- your phone now says "unlocked" at the top,but is still s-on?
what have you done to root?
once you have a truly unlocked bootloader, you can install a recovery thru that bootloader, and then flash superuser in that recovery.
having superuser permissions within a rom and being able to boot to a recovery shouldnt have anything to do with the bootloader.
if you are unable to install clockwork,or some other custom bootloader thru htcs "unlocked" bootloader, then they have lied to us... its not truly unlocked. that or something happened during the unlock process, possibly.
sorry im not of more help, its been awhile since i looked at the developer website. are there support forums there?
if everything is functioning correctly and you cant load whatever you want thru hboot, this unlock program is a joke. you could have gotten s-off with revolutionary or an xtc clip and not alerted them to the fact that you were messing with software and potentially "voided all or parts" of your warranty.
please keep us updated on this- im very interested to know how it turns out.
Thats exactly what it says. The method I used is on the front page of the htc dev site.
(the forum wont let me post outside urls yet)
The top of my H-boot screen says
"*** UNLOCKED ***
PYRAMID PUT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-1.80.0000
eMMC-BOOT"
So this is a problem. I think...
I just figured the official method through HTC would be the easiest and safest
Oh and when I try and flash Clockwork Mod Recovery through ROM manager this is the message I get
"You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superusuer was not found at /system/bin/su or /system/xbin/su. Use Google Search on your computer to find instructions to root your phone."
or
"An error occurred while attempting to run privileged commands."
So what have you done to root besides unlocking the bootloader? Just tried to install rom manager and clockwork?
Unless you have done something else, you are not rooted, you are just unlocked. Search the sensation forum for a PxxxIMG file that is clockwork recovery. When named that, and placed on root of your SD,hopefully your hboot will find and flash it.
Once you have done that, delete the PxxxIMG From your SD card, and place the superuser.zip file on it. Enter recovery thru hboot, and flash superuser.zip.it will install the root files.
After that you should be rooted.
Later I can try and find some links if you can't find them. PxxxIMG will be specific to the pyramid,I'm not sure what it is. For example, this type of file for the thunderbolt is PG05IMG.
Hope that helps.
edit:
here are some links for you:
download clockwork from here or multiupload (found the download in this thread)
download from one of those 2 places. rename the download "PG58IMG" and place on the root of your sd card. boot to hboot(power+vol down). when asked to update chose yes.
download superuser from here (this is the one i always use. found it here)
after deleting or renaming PG58IMG from your sd card, put the superuser.zip, boot to hboot, select recovery, then flash the superuser.zip.
hope it helps

Well I tried what you recommended and it did not work. But then I tried revolutionary and I managed to get s-off. However HBOOT doesnt recognize the P58IMG file. It just keeps saying P58IMG.*** NO IMAGE. (*** being different file types).
Im not sure if I need to try the recovery now that Im s-off but I cant flash the superuser file either.
gah! i wish you hadnt run revolutionary yet,as now we wont really know if your "unlocked" s-on hboot would have allowed the flash like a truly s-off one will.
one thing i know for certain,is that the troubles youre having werent because you were s-on. being able to place the superuser app,aND matching binary within the OS is not dependent on the hboot being s-off. s-off is handy,as it allows another method of flashing partitions like the radio and recovery. in the old days, before all the exploits were patched, alot of devices were rooted and a custom recovery installed from within the OS without ever bothering with the bootloader. the eris is a good example- prolly 95% of the eris community is still s-on and they change roms and such all the time.
-so i guess you downloaded the PG58IMG from multiupload? when i tried the first link, there was no valid attachement.
-you did name PG58IMG,correct? if you did name the file "P58IMG" maybe thats the prollem?
-make sure your SD card is formatted FAT32( not just plain FAT) and make sure you put the file on the root(not inside another folder)
*assuming you named the file correctly, have a FAT32 sd card, and placed the file onto the root of the SD,what happend when you went to hboot?
heres what should happen: the green writing flashes, hboot finds a PG58IMG file, then youll see a blue status bar on the far left as the phone unpacks it,then gold as it checks it. since the recovery file is small youll see that very fast. then you should get the "vol up to update" prompt.
if you have named the file correctly,FAT32 card, etc. maybe you just got a bad download. try downloading it again.
i downloaded and checked it- it contains a recovery image and an android info file,so it should be good to go. if you want to verify the integrity, the md5 i got is: 940fa14af3dcd055132adf292f668ad3
last and not least,if you ran revoltuinary it should have installed clockwork for you. if you dont want to keep messing with PG58IMG files, just run revoltionary again. it should detect your s-off,then ask if you want to install clockwork.
im sure youre getting a lil fustrated, but the method for rooting new phones is what im reccomending you to do:
1)unlock bootloader(revolutionary or htc unlock)
2)install recovery thru bootloader
3)install superuser files from recovery
it does work,i promise... ive done it many times on my thunderbolt.
Awesome, everything worked great. I had a few hitches but I figured them out. Thank you so much for all the help, I really appreciate it.
Until just now... I installed cm7 and now when i boot up my phone all I see is about 6 seconds of the cm7 start up animation (the one with the blue android guy on a skateboard). Then the phone starts up that same animation again. Its been doing this for about an hour now.

sounds like you didnt do a full wipe. pull the pattery,go back to recovery thru hboot, and wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik chache, and format /system. i dont usually format /system,but when youre stuck in a bootloop it cant hurt
well it was my own dumb fault... like extracting the .zip files instead of leaving them compressed.
And yeah now i totally have cm7 running! thanks for all the help man. I really appreciate it

[Q] HTC Thunderbolt Stock Original ROM

Hello I've been experimenting with some custom roms on a HTC Thunderbolt. The friend that owns it said he had a backup stock original rom that came with the phone, but all of sudden does not have it anymore. I am wondering if there is a way I can get the original stock Froyo 2.2 ROM that came with the Thunderbolt. Or even better the stock OTA Gingerbread 2.3 update that came in last week. I've found some stock roms online, but they all turned out to be invalid. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Here is one stock rom that I found:
PG05IMG_Mecha_VERIZON_WWE_1.70.605.0_Radio_1.39.00.0627r_NV_8k_1.41_9K_1.64_release_200422_signed.zip
but all the downloads of this file turn out be to invalid.
do you want to unroot? or do you want a rooted stock rom?
if you want to stay rooted, flash one of these in recovery:
froyo 1.70.605.0
gingerbread 2.11.605.3
RUUs if you want to unroot:
froyo 1.70.605.0 (note this is a .exe file)
gingerbread 2.11.605.3 this is a pg05img(install in hboot)
i checked the last 2 downloads and they are working fine.
need help
Hey guys, I was trying to unroot my thunderbolt but jacked things up. I had it wipe all date, now will not boot Its still rooted. When i go into the reboot mood its by Revolutionary. Info it displays where it gives me options of fastboot, recover, factory reset, simlock, hboot usb and image crc is
Revolutionary
MECHA XD SHIP S-OFF

Idk if that helps. It doesnt reboot or does a looping process. Just stays at the white htc screen and doesnt say anything, and is not the screen where it says htc quietly brilliant. When i go into recovery 4ext recovery touch is whats available, current rom:unknown. Im fairly new so i would greatly appreciate any help, I like this phone alot and would hate to use something else. I dont care if after everything is said and done its still rooted or not. I have my personal info still on my card and a backup on my computer so im safe on that and dont care if i lose everything on the phone.
Hey,
I wish I would have know you wanted an unrooted thunderbolt, I would have traded you. Currently looking for a way to root ICS with out a million step process.

[Q] Noob who apparently cant search - rooting issues

Sorry as I know these answers are out there, but I have been trying things for 2 days to no avail.
My end goal is a CM9 ROM on my sensation
I used Hasoons idiot proof utility, but apparently I am a super idiot
I clicked on install drivers, nothing happened, I assumed that I had everything I need from the sensation I had and rooted back in Oct 2011, so then I click "S-Off", the cmd box popped up and immediately went away (yes I went to the site and dl'ed the SOFF program).
after an hour of trying to figure that out I ended up skipping that and just going to HTC Dev and unlocked the boot loader. Thank went fine.
Installed CWM, that went fine, I think. If I hold Vol Down and Power it takes me to hboot not CWM? I can get to CWM by hitting recovery in HBOOT but I thought I remember Vol Down +Pwr took me straight to CWM.
THEN THINGS WENT WRONG.
I got a little greedy and tried to immediately flash a CM9 ROM, it flashed ok, but never got past the white HTC screen. So I tried to back pedal but flashing what I thought was a stock IMG file of GB. All the ones I trired would parse but do nothing after that.
Do I need to relock the boot loader to flash stock GB? and if so where is the Stock US T-mo GB IMG?
If I were to get it back to stock and did an HTC OTA ICS update, would I then be able to re-unlock and then install CM9?
Can anyone also help with S-Off, If I remember correctly, my hboot is 1.118??
I also cannot seem to find the latest firmware for CM9 as the ones I clicked on gave me 404 website errors.
Again I apologize as I am sure the answer is easy, but I spent 4 hours on this and just need some help.
Thanks
