You must have hide known file extensions enabled in Windows so when you named it update.zip you were actually naming it update.zip.zip

it has to be signed .. read JFs info for his "Build Environment" .. very easy to do in linux .. you can't just modify the zip and be done .. files must be signed
thanks for your response
No need for the entire build environment. Just get the AndroidMod.zip file (google for dl sources) and run the modified update.zip through signapk. There is a readme included detailing how to use it.
I have the sign app but I can't figure out how to use it. I searched but I could not find a good set of instructions.
Open your command line, change directory to the signapk directory (also for convenience your update.zip file should be in this directory too) then type:
java -jar signapk.jar testkey.x509.pem testkey.pk8 update.zip update_signed.zip
That's it. The update_signed.zip file will be the finished file. If it gives you an error 'java' is not a valid executable, that is because you don't have JRE or JDK installed.
ok I did all that put the update.zip that is signed on my sd card with nothing else on it. started teh up date the phone verifies the file. then it starts installing as soon as it starts to install I get this error on my phone. "E:Can't find update script installation aborted.
Somehow you deleted the update-script. Check the zip file to see if its still present:
\META-INF\com\google\android\update-script
it is still there

Confusing.
it is only a 3k file. I found a 14k file in another update.zip I had
still says it can't find it
What archive creation program are you using to create the zip?
winzip what should I be using
Hm. Idk, I was just curious. It shouldn't make a difference really. Particularly if the signing tool worked fine. Maybe someone else can shed some light on this.
Try and re download your sources and then modify and resign.
Also be sure to check your sources after download and transfer (SHA1, MD5 etc)
ok I redownloaded the file and repeated the process and still get the same error. all I am trying to do is remove the camera app from the jf1.5adp1 build and put it on my phone .

It probably has .zip.zip. Download Astro from the market and look at the file. Also it must be all lower case.
This should be in the Captivate general forum. You would get a lot more responses there.
Hey!
Can someone tell me how to create update.zip files for g3?
regards
I am not sure, but i think g3 recovery requires update.zip files to be signed with Samsung key, which we don't have.
i tryed to signing the file, it opens the package, and gives an error :/
damnit..
Thing is you most likely signed using the test key which is not accepted by Samsung recovery
yea, i am using the testkey :/ whatever, thank you, need the android.policy.jar file
is this not work?
what is samsung key?

After I checked the file format in winn explorer , and the file format was "ZIP" ONLY. There was no "ZIPMINZIP".
After i tried to use 7-zip zipper but i get the same error.
Second thing , if invalid character means wrong simbol in name of zip file and zipminzip is a program to unzip the file , I tried to rename it also to a.zip but withouth any effect.
Is there any other method how to modify roms default app ?
Or any other way how to modify roms.. ?
My CWM is RA-blade-v2.3ro if this helps...
Thank you verry much for answer.

Yes , this was the problem . The CWM minzip is not supporting slovak simbols like "ลก" so i renamed and it worked.
Thanx for help.. heh ...
i made this small tool to Edit boot images on windows without Linux and cygwin.
i was carefull writing but even if there is any errors.. plz report bugs.
details is given in readme.
i searched over and over on google to find tool that works on windows but couldnt find any
finaly i decided to write my own.. and here is the tool.
New version available (1 aug 2014)
abimE v1.1R2
Hey first of all, nice tool. It seems to extract and recreate the boot.img file correctly although I haven't actually tested it yet.
However, I am getting some strange behavior with the header editor in Windows 7.
First, when selecting the attached image file to extract, I immediately get the error, "HeaderEditorERROR: File does not exists" in the log. This does not prevent me from extracting the image.
Then when attempting to edit the header info file extracted from this image I either get nothing or an overflow error which causes the application to crash.
ok buddy im looking for this
Sent from my Titanium S5 using XDA Free mobile app
temporarily.. you can solve this by deleting boot.img_out folder that you last time extracted..
header not found error:: this app automatically try to load last extracted bootimginfo file.. if it not exists.. it show this error.. its not to worry about.

What can be the use of it? can you give more details?
