Android free messenger, not IM ? - XPERIA X10 Themes and Apps

Is there an app that acts like SMS but thats free to use between 2 X10s and over data plan or WiFi ? Basically, I want SMS app that goes over data, not over network. I have Nimbuzz and Fring for IM but I need something that holds messages, e-mail is not an option.
Tnx

Use PingChat

Tnx a lot ! Looks promising. It asks for my phone number, is it completely free of charge, only data plan is used ?

why not just use the google talk app if you both have x10s?

Isnt GTalk chat application ? I want something like SMS, so that message stays for long time and the person doesnt need to be online and on phone. For chat I have Nimbuzz. Is Gtalk is something different than Nimbuzz ?

try Hanashi, it's an app made by SE...its free in the market...you can even record your voice and send it or share a file as well.
I use it quite often with my friends.
It uses data only...no additional cost.

Tnx but that is IM, not like SMS app, I want something like free SMS app, like e-mail but simpler, I will try Pingchat today.

I wish android would make something like BBM.. That would be 'orgasmic'!!

Dont know what BBM is but Pingchat is perfect ! Its just like SMS and the message waits on server until you turn on data so it can be delivered. Great stuff, just what I need !

+1 for go sms for texting
But if you have a big close knit group of friends that do alot of things or convo's together then might want to check out...
PingChat
Its just like your text/mms stock app or go sms but the difference is with this app is when you do a mass text message to a group their replies stay within that convo and all persons involved also can see others replies as well.
Downside is that they all have to have the app for it to work hence why i said a close knit of friends.

Group Texting
I'm using Disco! Free from the android market.
Only thing, you get sms advertisments once in a while.
It's kind of like conference texting. You set up a group list, send the sms and its sent to everyone to see and respond.

[Q] Is there a "free texting" app for Infuse (Android in general)?

Currently have an iPhone 4 and am waiting for my new Infuse to arrive. The iPhone had an app (that when jailbroken) allows you to use your Google Voice phone number for BOTH incoming and outgoing texting at no charge using data. The app even integrates with the native SMS app on the iPhone and works flawlessly.
I have been looking for a similar Android app and can't find one. Anyone know of such an app that allows FREE in and outbound texting using data?
To me the $10/month is a waste for a texting plan when I maybe will do 10-20 texts/month and AT&T's "pay per text" rate is a total ripoff.
U should be trying out "Google Voice" first. This does exactly what u r looking for.
I thought Google Voice on Android only allows free INCOMING texts and all outbound were still charged as "normal" texts either to a plan or at AT&T pricing?
If not, I was misinformed and am glad to hear that.
Google Voice in Android is much more integrated and you should be able to do the same with your Infuse (as you did with your iPhone), seamlessly and without the need for jailbreak/root and no extra charge

Close, but I don't want yet another phone number.
I'm looking for a Google Voice solution and I am being told that (strangely enough) the Google Voice app should work although I am still a bit skeptical about that because everything I have read says it's only for incoming text and outgoing text through G.V. is charged at regular text rates.
I'll have to wait until my INFUSE shows up then I will find out for sure. All I have now is a Samsung 10.1 Android tablet which won't let me download G.V. so I can't even try.
I would like to know as well if GV outgoing is free. I dont text much but my wife does quite a bit.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Outbound and incoming texts through a Google Voice number is completely free. I've already sent a hundred or so texts without incurring charges through Voice.
you can't get MMS though right?? is there a work around for that??

So far, none.
Well, finally got my Infuse and loaded up my Google Account and as others said I do indeed get 2-way free texting.
The only thing I don't like is that it is not integrated into the "stock" messaging app. I have to keep a GV widget on the home screen. As I mentioned in my OP there was an iPhone app that fully integrated GV into the iPhone messaging app complete with pop-up notifications which was very nice. I'm surprised that doesn't exist for Android since Google and Android are so closely related.
You can forward GV texts to email or even to your carriers text messaging but of course it then becomes a chargeable text.

I use GV for all my texting needs. So no need for native messaging app. And for occasional/stray texts that need to come to my phone, I use GoSMS.

Need a free messaging app

i have an samsung galaxy young..and i want an app which can send free messages to non android users for free... i dont want apps like whats app or viber etc which has free messages but for that the reciever should also have that app...i want an app which does not require all this condition and sends sms for free (eg hike is an app which allows u to send 100 sms a month to any number) but only 100 is too less...

Dude, what company would give you SMS for free? Every company wants to gain money, they won't throw their money in the faces from their users.

Wouldn't handcent or something similar work over WiFi for SMS only? You could turn data off and use WiFi when available. No MMS though over WiFi
I cannot hold on,
I will not let go
Google voice anyone? Unlimited and free texts as long as you're connected to the net. Don't think it does MMS though, but who needs that when every phone is connected to the net. Just email.

[Discussion] Whatsapp vs BBM

Whatsapp have more users (everybody I know, already have whatsapp).
BBM is faster than whatsapp and give the posibility of send files, any file, not only pictures, videos or audio, even apk files. Its good.
Sorry for my english
I think both have their advantages. For example: the use bbm pin as user identity, but on whatsapp not, and just use the phone number.
But for BBM, their server is often down.
And it affect to message transfer speed is often slow in my opinion.
I've used them, wether BBM or Whatsapp.
And now I use Whatsapp as my messaging app.
For whatsapp, I never felt there was a delay in the transfer of messages. except if there is no mobile phone signal.
Now I'm curious. whether bbm on android os just like in they OS or not, we'll see later...
Sorry for my bad english

For one, most BB users installed and use Whatsapp
I used the "leaked" BBM for Android for a couple of hours. I prefer WhatsApp. I found Whatsapp much more speedier than BBM.
About BBM letting users send across files.... I dont think its going to happen in BBM for Android.
The only advantage I see about BBM is that you dont have to reveal your phone number to anyone to add you to their list.
The disadvantage I see is that the BBM pin is too complicated to remember
I dont like bbm because many app chat better than bbm..
I dont like whatsapp because privacy problem..
BBM vs WHATSAPP
BBM vs WhatsApp
BBM - Slow,Servers Often Down. But Private, in a sence that you dont need to give out personal info such as email addresses and cell numbers.
WhatsApp - Fast,Server Never down. Private,But need to give out personal details such as a cell phone number.
All in All it is what it is it all comes down to what the user prefers,Privacy over reliablity (Sorry for the english xD) In my personal opinion WhatsApp is Better.
Please Give tanks <3
Remember STiCKxaH Loves you <3
I think I am going to use both as in south Africa bbm is very popular

bbm may be history.
WhatsApp - Lack voice/talk feature
Viber is better
I disagree bbm has many nice features like the read thing and the speed at which you can transfer pictures as well as high quality images. Recent updates is also nice. My only issue is the 6mb file size limit which I hope they can do away with.

at times it's so disturbing to get those messages in the notification bar, still whatsapp all the way.. BBM suits on a BB device only

Whatsapp because it is great and BBM just to tease people who bought BlackBerry phones just for BBM

I shudder to think my company is in line to acquire BlackBerry. Bbm might just become our official mobile im client. I prefer whatsapp. Maybe if they add file transfer and introduce hiding last seen timestamp on android, that'll take it to another level.

Oh yea there are a bunch of those out there man. Text free etc. Not trying to be funny but just type in text in the play store and tones of them will come up.

kik is like a free version of whatsapp with the added bonus of being anon (depending on your choice of user name)
Doesn't Hangouts work on both WiFi and mobile internet?
Hangouts is similar to I Message... If their name doesn't have a SMS then you are in a hangout. However I do have a question about hangouts. How do you attach videos? When I touch the camera the only options are take photo and attach photo. I have a hang out between my self my sister and my mother and we can't figure out how to share videos. And I'm not talking about video conferencing.
