[Q] Turning stock HTC apps off? (for good?) - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys
I have a question with some of the stock HTC apps running in the background.
When I go into Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Running
I see a couple of running apps that seem to be on all the time, such as Stocks, Peep, Flickr, Footprints, News etc
The problem is I don't use them unless I'm connected through Wi-Fi. (and even when I am, I still don't use the Footprints and Stocks app)
Of course I tried to force stop them, but they seem to turn themselves on again after awhile.
Is there any work around to this? I assume that they are "scheduled" to turn on to auto sync themselves, but I've already set the syncing period to once a day, still no dice. Is there a way to only have them run when I manually execute the app?
Also, my stock "mail" app (not Gmail) seems to have 1mb of data, which I clear to 0mb. When I check back again after a couple of hours, it's back to 1mb. How is this happening? I have not even connected to Wi-Fi over that period of a couple of hours.
Thanks in advance!

[Q] Gmail Android Sync

I've been searching for a real answer to this question high and low... and yet the answer doesn't seem sufficient.
I am using the stock Gmail app (2.2). I'm trying to get push emails -- but it doesn't push, mostly because it doesn't seem that my account syncs very often even with auto-sync turned on. For example, I went to the Account window at 2:58pm, and it said the last sync was at 2:33pm, so I wasn't getting "push" email in the interim at all.
How do I consistently ensure that my Gmails arrive regularly and avoid this sync issue that obviously isn't a real "push"? I can't be getting emails on my phone 25 minutes after they're sent. And there's no way to set the frequency apparently, at least not with the Gmail app.
So does the lack of response mean that nobody knows the answer? Surely I can't be the only one this is affecting.
You are not alone ;-)
I am having the same issues today, (I flashed and unofficial version of gingerbread on my Desire yesterday)
With Android 2.2, I had no problems, I have no idea what the sync frequency was, but it seemed adequate. With Android 2.3, I am having the same kind of issues. My laptop knows I have new mail, but my phone doesn't.
If it is not possible to find out or update the sync frequency, then there are some gmail notifier apps in the market which may provide an acceptable solution.
Interesting, this was a problem for me always (2.1 and now 2.2). I thought it was attributed to the internal Android sync which seems to me to occur every 30 minutes (even though the "auto sync" checkbox should mean a little more frequently, no)?
What Gmail notifier apps would you recommend, and do they bypass the internal "Accounts and sync" settings? That's not the ideal solution at all, but I'll take it if it means my Android will check emails more frequently -- like as they arrive.
Hi,
I had the same problem after flashing CM7.
Under menu, accounts (Were you can see all accounts you sync with) press on Gmail account. There you need check if everything is activated.
On my phone the checkbox for sync gmail was missed. Contacts and calender where checked

Gmail is checked for me. My settings are correct. Like I said before, it's syncing every 30 minutes. That's not acceptable if my emails are really "push" as this doesn't seem like "push" to me.

Possibly a stupid question, but, on your main accounts and sync page, do you have "background data" checked? I have that checked and auto-sync checked and I get my G-Mail on my phone about 10 seconds after I get it on my desktop. Just asking because I don't see that mentioned anywhere here. BTW--I am running CM7.
I have Background data, and Auto-sync both ticked. I have now been waiting several hours for emails (that I know are waiting) to appear - they haven't, so I'm not even getting 30 minute responses.
The "Sync all" button has no effect either, so I guess that my problem is different
That is using 2 gmail accounts, both correctly setup - in theory.
OK, my problem is fixed. I switched off auto-sync, then I was able to manually sync everything: mail, calendar, contacts, books. I then switched auto sync back on, and now I am being notified of email from all sources in 2-3 minutes.
Yup, Background data is on. maersi - this might be my issue. Trying it and will see what happens.

[Q] Gmail and Calendar stopped Syncing

Recently my gmail has stopped background syncing, as well as my google calendar. I think my contacts aren't syncing either. If i got into gmail and hit refresh it pulls all the emails, same the other services.
Why has it stopped doing it automatically? Labels are set to sync, background updates are on, im connected to wifi, my google account is set to sync, not rooted. The standard email is updating in the background with my uni account like it should. Gmail is working on my Desire (MIUI).
Please help.
Cheers
Go into Applications for each. Choose "clear cache " and then "clear data ". Ignore the warnings.

I tried this, it didnt work, I then unchecked both sync, and bacgrkound sync, and checked them again, and now it works.
Thanks
Sorry to bump an old thread, but this is happening to me again. I deleted all the data and restarted, but it's still not background updating. Kind of makes the Xoom worthless for me as that's my main use for it... (unactivated 3g xoom on wifi only). anyone have any ideas?

[Q] Help! My Android won't stop using my data

Hey guys,
I'm trying to stop my phone from using background data automatically before I turn on data (It costs alot per kb here).. I was wondering if you could offer me a hand. Note that I use Cyanogenmod (I'm not sure which version, I purchased it with this) I've installed TrafficInfo to monitor what's using data, and I've narrowed it down to just 2 apps left..
Calendar Sync Adaptor/Google Services Framework/Contacts Sync Adaptor
This is still using data frequently (2.8kb download/39kb upload since I booted 10mins ago) even though turned sync off. I've tried turning auto sync on and then unticking each option, and also I have tried turning auto sync just off.. neither seem to do the trick.
Maps [brut]
This one only uses 300bytes download/1.2kb upload when I turn the device on but I'd like to see it go anyway. I've installed a start up manager and removed maps from start up and it's still doing this.
So, any help with these 2 problems would be appreciated! Also I don't want to turn background data off because I still want to be able to use the market if I choose to
Cheers

Sensation not Auto Syncing?

My sensation will not autosync, the only way it will is by me forcing it to via the AutoSync widget. It will not grab my email or Google voice texts unless I forcefully do so. I have background data and autosync checked in the accounts and sync section in the settings menu as well. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? I have done a factory restore as well and I have the same issue. It worked fine before now it never does.

HI
I have the same problem, just like you i enabled everything, but no auto sync. it was syncing till last night. this morning it auto sync does not work any more. Hope someone can help
Weird, so it wasn't only me. Yeah I turned my phone on yesterday morning and my Weather Lock Screen said "No Weather Data" or something like that and noticed none of my calendars, email accounts, or news were updating. I rebooted and removed battery no luck.
I was able to fix it when I went to Settings > Accounts & Sync and noticed that "Auto-Sync" and "Background Data" were unchecked. Checked them both and everything was fine. Unsure as to why it's not working for you guys. Still working as of today.
My sensation have no problems with autosync, i just configure my differents email account, and my agenda and email are sync perfectly.
When i went to Settings > Accounts & Sync and noticed that "Auto-Sync" and "Background Data" were checked.
I have had this happen and found it to be a result of the temp root methods used. Well, at least since I haven't rooted again, it hasn't happened again. So are you temp rooted? If so reboot a couple times and see if it works after that with out re rooting. If so, it may just be the price of the temp root. Really the only thing temp root got me was backup and adfree, which I can live without to be honest.
I have the exact same problem. It syncs whenever it wants to. I have to manually sync it. Everything that is supposed to be checked is checked. I am not temp rooted or rooted
I hope for you and other people who have this mistake, a update will correct it.
I have the same problem on my XE ... It just stops syncing from time to time.

[Q] (android): Continuous syncing. How?

Hi!
I really like using whatsapp and gmail on my desire S android phone.
There's just one problem...it doesn't check for new messages all the time.
As soon as I go and do something that requires internet on my phone, I get new messages/gmail-mails...but it doesn't automatically check it. I have checked these programs on the synchronisation tab (settings).
Is there a way to make your phone internet-connected at all times, which will probably resolve my not-instant-syncing problem.
Thanks!
i believe the most you can do is go to settings>accounts&sync and select background data and auto-sync
