For those who might be interesting in buying Touch HD:
1) "Today" at HD works in portrait mode only. (I used only landscape in Polaris)
2) Scroll wheel in Polaris is very convenient. I missed it in HD.
Regards.
Hi I can't agree with your opinion.
I've changed from Polaris to HD 5 days ago,
Today screen works also in portrait and landscape mode!
Scroll wheel I never needed on Polaris.
I prefer the large display instead of the scroll wheel.
I don't know, man. Claiming the Polaris beats out the HD is a very hard sell. I know if they sold one with US 3G bands I'd be ALL over it without looking back, heh.

1) "HTC Home", which I meant, does not exist alone in HD. It is included in "TouchFLO 3D", which still works in portrait mode only. Neither Gyrator 2 nor Gsen (unstable at HD) can rotate "TouchFLO 3D" (actually Gyrator 2 can rotate it, but when in "lock" mode only -- looks damn anyway). Known attempts to install alone "HTC Home" at HD are failed.
Thus, most time you are locked in portrait mode at HD.
2) I use scroll wheel each time when I read news (RSS) or texts in Polaris. The scroll wheel is very ergonomic in Polaris (although RSS code does not scroll correctly after the official WM6.1 upgrade, but the upgrade by NewsBreak (RSS V2) restores the functionality).
HD screen has noticeably larger, than in Polaris, screen length. The total screen length in HD is nearly the same at the sum of Polaris's length plus its scroll wheel area.
Thus, I have to use the "scroll wheel" area in HD anyway and found it inconvenient because:
1) anyway, you cannot scroll close to the edge of the screen because of presence of the ruler, which "naturally" moves in the opposite (to the finger) direction;
2) In 50% cases the finger marks the text instead of scrolling -- most inconvenient;
3) and what's about the fat traces at the HD's screen in the "scroll area"? -- I had to clean HD screen every evening.
3) There are few hardware improvements in HD:
a) you can lock the device by inserting the stylus back to its holder.
(i.e. keep the stylus out the device when you are using it actively, ha-ha). Fortunately, this feature can be disabled.
b) automatic adjustment of the backlight. Great, but what's about "floodlight" into your eyes when you just awoken (by wakeup alarm) in the dark room ?
Fortunately, this can also be disabled.
Regards.
PS: I returned back to Polaris.
Yeah sort of a hard sell, I like my phone but the HD is a sweet device. If the HD came with quad band GSM and triband 3G, same frequencies as the Polaris, I would be all over that.
What did you do with your HD? Selling it?

Christmas toy to my child. Hope he will find how to improve it by himself.
i suppose is just a matter of getting used to anything new... i suppose if you did use the HD for a while, you wouldnt change back to the polaris... unless you dont like changing in your life...
i found it difficult to get used to every new phone i bought, apart from the excitement in the beginning.... but in a few days i would be allready settled on my new phone, even if i did miss some of the bits of my previous one... you allways get round it....
question: Why did you even bother buying it, since you allready knew there wasnt a scroll button??
The very INSTANT I have the $$$, my trusted Polaris will retire, and a new HD will be in my hand I will still use my Polaris for 3g tethering, tho...
Edit: Ha!! My new HD will be shipped Monday (Nov 17th) morning!!!

1) I cannot live with obsolete portrait mode (I did not know that HTC Home became a part of portrait-only TouchFLo in HD). "portrait only" software from the producer of the high-tech device with in-build g-sensor -- does not it sounds strange?
2) scrolling by finger is better (natural) in iphone;
3) I did not know that there is still no hardware video support in HD

How can I disable the locking device when inserting the stylus?
Thanks!!!
1) Disabling stylus can be done with Gyrator 2
2) Correction of wrong HTC's auto light calibration can be done with G-light.
Actually it is the light sensor hardware problem in HD. Namely, it reports almost zero light signal in a quite broad light conditions from full dark till twilight. Thus, the scale should not be uniform.
Just wondering what is the best barcode reader app for the HD2, I've seen a few but not sure which is the best one.
I want it to also be able to price compare and show the best place to get an item.
+1!
I haven't found a good one, yet. The only one that way works in an acceptable way is the German one WOABI.
if you meen the square barcode then "I-nigma" is good and free
I use Mobiletag, it does work (I tried it on a book, a box of tissues a can of soup and a dvd) to name a few things... They do seem to be upgrading it too, so time will tell how much better it gets.
But it is freeware and it does work on the HD2
hope that helps
View attachment mobiletag_3_directShowAndHtcSDK_3.0.02_buil3.CAB
the problem with mobiletag is that it doesn't have an integrated camera app and it doesn't shoot automatically like Quickmark, so I have problems in getting the barcode recognized. How does it work for you?
After the upgrade from version 2 to 3 it works fine
You run the app, then tap anywhere on the screen, it opens very quickly with your own phones camera
Holding your phone in Portrait mode only (it doesnt work landscape) focus the barcode in the centre of the screen so it all but fills the screen left to right, and wait for your phone to focus on it (usually about 2 seconds) in general if it looks clear to you on screen the app recognises it too...
Dont try and take the photo, you dont press anything when its in the camera part, once it sees the barcode thats it
It makes an odd sound and goes back to the reader again and done
(an odd point, I cant get it to work when only have a 3g connection, it seems to need a HSDPA connection)
Have another try with it ozkaya

you know what?? it just worked!! thanks a lot for your suggestion, I was trying to take the photo myself while in landscape mode, now all is fine
btw: it works for me with wifi and landscape as well.
edit: this must be one of the best apps for WinMo, it correctly identified almost ALL of my CDs.

Just wondering.
Every time i open the camera app, the gps icon blinks on screen.
My gps is disabled.
Is it geotagging?
Any way to turn it off?

Yes it is geotagging
And I don't believe there is a way to disable it through settings. Surely there is a way if you edit the .apk. But thats above my pay grade
Someone here more than likely has the know how
But there was an option in eclair based roms. Why it has gone?
Use Camera 360 from the market. It is a much better app - even the free version.
In the stock camera from samsung, you choose the gear menu and then the wrench menu and then on the second page of that one there is a check box for geo tag. (other camera apps may vary...)
It's only a problem for 2.2 ROMs where they take away the option to enable/disable Geo Tagging. It is enabled by design.
I just noticed that as well. I wonder why I can't turn it off, its not like the gps on the phone works.
Well the compass does point at the right direction but when I fired up street view and turned on compass mode, (which is pretty sweet btw) no matter how still I hold the phone or even place it flat on a table for that matter, the image keeps quivering. The image just does not stay in one place! Went into test mode and under sensors I checked it out it was the same quivering. Also under settings>display> theres an option for Horizontal calibration, funny thing is even when placed on a absolutely flat surface (I tried at different places), the small ball in the center does not stay still! Why is this so? This issue makes using sky map, street view, layar etc quite unusable because of all the jitter! Any fix for this?
Jumping around happens when you are near a magnetic field such as speaker, computer etc. move away in open area, jumping should reduce.
In the compass settings> noise filter set to strong, sensor rate slowest & buffer display ticket with green check mark.
This should solve your problem, if not then report back.

Which compass settings are you referring to? Where do I find these settings?
Compass is a app which you can download from the market in that you will have those settings, once set you wont face that jumping issue. Mine stay still.
By saying street view are you referring to layar which shows a compass too?
Ok I'll try that out, but will changing those settings in the app apply to the whole system?
The street view I was referring to is from google maps with compass mode on.
I had the same problem as your since i installed compass & set it the right way that problem was never noticed, earlier it use to jump, so my best guess is that those settings are somehow being read by other apps too.
In my case google maps with compass mode remains quite still.
Do report back with the results.
Well I tried your fix and it worked kinda, the twitching has reduced but its still there which is very annoying. In service test under sensors it still keeps jumping around. I've also tried using it in a place free from magnetic signals but still the same. Is it this way for all galaxy s users our could mine be faulty?
Mine stays perfectly still (FW ddkb1) whats your FW?
Compass on google map works only when gps is enabled & locked, if gps is not able to lock then it might have the problem which you are describing.
Are you able to lock on to the gps (icon stops flashing)?
Well I'm on the same firmware as you (kb1). (kies keeps crashing if I try to update to kb2, but that's another issue)
The twitching issue I'm talking about should not be related to gps, on the map itself it does not twitch at all, but when I go to say new york on the map and go to street view, and enable compass mode, even if I hold the phone vedas still the image on the screen still vibrates.
I tried to replicate at my end but i don't have any issues, maps don't vibrate, however they rotate as per compass pointing (locked) to north.
What do you mean by street view, there is no such option in maps at my end, when i go to new york I see a road map only, is there something which i am missing?
Seems some setting we have is different between you & me though we both are on kb1 but cant figure out what.

Ok so i'm guessing you have never tried street view before, ok so just enter 'new york' into the search box and it will take you there, once there you will see a big red arrow pointing downwards to the map with New York written above. Click on the name and select the right most option (a man standing) that will take you to street view, once in there press the menu key and turn on compass mode. Try holding the phone still or even place it flat on a table and see if the image twitches. (Its a pretty cool thing anyways, you'll enjoy it! )
The probelm that I am facing is similar to this
Jumping Compass
Oh I have seen street view on desktop numerous time didn't know its a feature on our phones too. Now I tested street view as per your instruction & it does change its angle 5° approx & flicker but in compass mode it just show me the bottom of the 360° image & no more moves.
The issue could be in street view as its in beta testing.
The jumping compass video is what I was having the problem but after I changed the settings it got stabilized.
We can ask bala who has updated his fw to kb3 to test this if the problem is same or not.

Have you updated your google maps? Its at version 5.3.0 now. It could not be street view's fault because it used to work perfectly fine on my xperia x10 earlier. Come to think of it the x10 had far better gps and compass components (but seriously lacked in other areas).
Changing the settings in compass app worked only in that app itself, its not a general fix for it though.I would like to know if all i9000/i9003 have this problem...
magnetometergate?
I just bought this same phone and I'm experiencing the same jitter. This is a real show stopper since it renders useless apps like those mentioned here, panorama stitching, Google sky map and others. I'm really annoyed and thinking about returning the phone.
The Iphone 3Gs does not suffer this issue, the compass moves smooth and softly.
This seems to be a hardware problem, maybe Samsung can improve the software filter or update the sensor firmware.
Since I am using xxkb3 now I tested again but this compass jumping problem still is the same.
I remember that xxkb3 offers few calibration & tweaking of setting for compass but what these settings do is not known to us hence I have not changed anything, I still feel that this can be addressed by tweaking the settings & not really a hardware issue.
The compass in i9003 is more sensitive to magnetic field disturbance hence the problem.
As for me, the best car app for today is Car Home Ultra. It is customizable a lot and it shows more usable information on main screen.
But at the same time, I face the problem of finding "right" shortcuts.
For example, if I'm using shortcut for Phone, it always works in portrait mode. I can't get it in landscape
Does anyone knows how to get shortcuts for Phone (or Dialer) which are used in original HTC Car panel? Phone app in Car panel does rotate (Favorites, Recent Calls, Dialer)!!! see pics.

You would need a Desire Z dialer apk that has the ability to rotate. Problem is.. the Desire is the wrong resolution. You might want to search around a bit and see if anybody ported a rotating dialer to the Sensation...
I am not sure dialer from other phones are needed, because, as you can see on pictures, Sensation has already rotating dialer, at least from it's original Car panel.
I want to find shortcuts to these apps.
Ok. Perhaps right question is - how to get Phone mode (dialer) to landscape view?
Thanks to "topcattroy" from other forum for workaround on Car Home ultra.
>>>
" ... Inside this app's options it has a check box to turn on car home
which came with the phone. It acts like you put it into a car dock from verizon.
And guess what the dialer is now landscape. So when you use this app
when your driving you can put a shortcuts on the app to call or open the phone.
It is in LANDSCAPE. It took me since the phone came out till today to find this
to work. Hope this helps anybody with a thunderbolt. and i bet other androids too."
I am thinking about the same question after tried out several car home dock applications myself. How to get the dailing panel landscape? If you observe carefully most roms do not go to landscape mode of the sense home or dialer if you put your phone on the side. It seems the landscape mode of sense home is supported deep in the framework in the Gingerbread. Most devs, perhaps the htc soft-engineers too make the landscape mode off in the normal situation in order to prevent any complications. Only the devs can figure out how to trigure the landscape mode. Hope an expert finally can focus on thier eyes on this issue and make a application shortcut.
At the same time, native CarPanel allows dial mode go to landscape mode. Even 3rd part dialers works in landscape (but I like sense ).
Also for Windows phones there were quite easy to make "white list" in registry for apps to allow them to rotate.
I am not sure, but perhaps I have to ask this question in devs discussions.
I eventually got the dialer into landscape mode after a few tries. I am using a rooted leedroid ROM but its should be pretty much the same for standard ROM.
I had to remove all of the HTC Locations apps and widgets, as these are all system apps I used Android Optimizer for doing this. This also allowed me use the Google Car Home app which is installed but not accessible with HTC Locations installed.
To put the phone into Car Mode I use the Tasker app to set the Display Car Mode on but the Car Home Ultra app also has an option to do this.
With this done I can use the standard dialer in landscape and as I prefer to use Google Navigation app anyway then I dont have the HTC Locations installed at all and havent tried reinstalling in case it tries to take over again.
... and yes as a wee word of advise, backup everything before you start and then backup each item before you hit the remove button!
