I want to update my Gmail app to the new one... how can i do this??
not possible, unofficial gapps updates from other non-ms phones will disable agps functionality...
so its a no go.
If you just take the gmail app, you loose authenticaion problems and your android market becomes unstable.. and it might not even install because of signature problems.
I'm sorry to dig out this thread again, but this is what the search led me to:
I'm not on a Milestone but a Defy, which has Motoblur, so it should be all the same. In the market, Gmail doesn't show up and the included one is rather old.
So you say there is no way to get an updated version unless Motorola finds it necessary to supply the users with an updated app? Which, I suppose, will at some point be the 2.2 upgrade... How nice would that be, app updates provided by the manufacturer, from ROM to ROM...
On a sidenote: the market got updated to the all brand new one. So it's the Gmail app which rules as a central authentication agent to Googles servers and services?
Is the Defy on Eclair or Froyo? Standalone Gapps only work from Froyo onwards.
Anyway, are you able to see paid apps in your Market?
If not, root your phone (Z4Root) and download Market Enabler/ Market Access, then select one of the sim IDs to spoof. You should be able to see the updated Google apps then.

DEFY still on 2.1, so you can't update it, or need to find a custom rom, if any

This is what gives (everyone?) headaches... It's on 2.1 and a custom 2.2 is - AFAIK - a no-go with Motorola having released only a signed 2.1 kernel. To hell with locked bootloaders and low-level signature checks... Ugh...
@motorator I didn't know that with the standalone apps, thanks for that.

Howdy,
I use a captivate on At&t's network and I was using Cognition 2.36b with no problems(regarding the Market). Now I've installed Cognition 3.01 and the Market does not allow me to bill to my At&t account.
I assume this is because 3.01 is based off a rogers modem(from what I've read??)
Is there anyway to get an At&t version of the market? Or fake the location?
I see V 2.2.11 is out...will these fix the issue?
Thanks a ton for the help! I really appreciate it
don't know if this will work, but download market access: http://amip.tools-for.net/wiki/android/marketaccess
and set it AT&T (310410 I believe) and see if that helps
edit: bah, just downloaded to take a quick look-see, but seems it's already set to 310410 for me and I don't have the bill-to-carrier option
I tried replacing the Vending.apk and MarketUpdater.apk from Cogn2.38.
Also, tried the MarketAccess app.
Nothing seems to get past the problem and let the Market work as AT&T. Probably some Rogers stuff in the rom blocking it.
I also had no luck with the market access app. I never did try 2.38, I assume that the billing option was available there?
Thanks for the replies! Hopefully we can come up with something as a fix
I've also tried Market Enabler with no luck...
Not here either
I'm running 2.3b8 and don't have the option anymore either. It was available on JH7 so it's something with the ROM.
It could be att blocking it....
I am on cog2.3b8 and it worked a week ago. And i tried just yesterday BEFORE i flashed 3.0 and it no longer worked.
If ive done my research correctly, 2.x is based on AT&T's stock rom. 3.x is based on rogers version of 2.2. That would make sense why the market isn't working, and why our markets did work with 2.x versions of the rom. I just dont understand why the market enabler apps aren't working...
Hopefully a solution pops up soon

It works fine for me.
Theres a app call MY MARKET, it will let u browse all the avaiable apps unblocked
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk
Also, i changed my home on my browser. might want to give that a try. i went to google.com, instead of the rogers homepage.
My home was google.com automatically. The MY Market app is good to browse other carriers apps, but it doesn't allow billing to AT&T
Thanks for the continued ideas...
Market Hijacked
I don't know if this is related or not, but I'm posting here because this showed up on my ATT Captivate a couple days after I flashed Cognition 3.01
Whenever I bring up the Market App, I get the following message:
" Warning: Your device may not be compatible with Android Market.
Contact your device's manufacturer for more information. "
Also- most of the apps that show up are bogus, and simple searches provide no results. Graphically - it looks just like the normal Android Market app - but it is filled with a lot of nonsensical apps - along with a few genuine (?) apps.
Most have no user reviews, or have reviews like: "this is a test"
Many are "authored" by devs with names like: "Testing pubsite" , "UK developer" , "tester r35" , and many more, similarly named.
In addition to this, my market history ("My apps") was EMPTY, even though the (many) apps I downloaded and installed after the Cognition flash all seem to be available and functioning properly.
This behavior did not appear until yesterday - I had been using the Andriod Market without incident for ~ 3days after flashing the Cog 3.01 ROM.
The only difference I saw was that the AT&T tab on the Market's startup screen was replaced with "My apps" - but I expected that with a custom ROM.
It would seem MY phone's Market app is taking me to a different site - not THE Genuine Android Market.
Is there any way to patch the phone's MArket app to restore either :
the Market released with COG,
the "normal" AT&T Market app, or
ANYTHING else that would be useful ??
Thanks in advance for the help !!!
I may be mistaken, but isn't your android id linked to the market? I wonder if you need to use Android ID changer to change back to your original Android ID?

hello there,
i have tried different froyo Roms on my defy, and used the stock ones as is without modifying anything in the ROM, but after my defy is idle for sometime, i do not get gmail, gtalk, whatsapp, etc to sync and i get late notifications (up to 45 minutes late)
i came to conclude that any app uses googles C2DM (clould to device messaging) seems to be having the same problem, is anyone having this behavior? any fix for this?
note: data enabled, battery manager set to performace, sync is on.
i even tried CM7 and same issue. can it be that i am flashing only fixed sbf+nandroid?
do i need to flash full sbf for that to work? any idea???
i think there is a problem with google services the past month or so. It may have nothing to do with your phone or rom. star this thread over at the google help forums:

thanks for the reply, it seems google services are affected and if one is using 2.2+ C2dm applications will be affected too as they're using googles services for push. back to 2.1 now, google applications will function same as 2.2 but other applications are 100% ok.
i just dont want to move to iPhone please google fix this!
I am running the stock v2.3.4 build GRJ22 on my ns4g, but can't seem to find some apps on the market. Specifically, Google Listen, Google Goggles, Facebook for Android, HandyCards-Rewards.
Any idea why they are not showing up. I have seen in some other forums that people have them on their NS4Gs. Do I have to root it for these to work?
One of the other device forums mentioned having to do a factory reset. Is that the only option?
Pure stock? Did you root it or anything?

try going to market.android.com and downloading them from there
If its not showing it probably isnt supported with gingerbread. Although some apps might "work"
Uncle Jimmy says hello
I have experienced this quite a bit, and it is very frustrating to say the least. Essentially the market filters out "incompatible apps" based on the android version. However I would rather be able to download it and decide for myself whether it is compatible or not.
Nevertheless there is no way around it (that I could find). Myself and all the other cm7 users have experienced this since running cm7...
I would imagine there is a way to bypass it, but who knows how and how difficult it would be for that matter.
Try the following apps;
Market enabler
or
Market Doctor (by Tibu)
may fix your problem
awsome..trying now!

Just wondering if anyone knows why the android market hasnt updated itself.
I still have the market with the green top (2.3.4) yet the new market 3.x.x was released months ago.
There were several 3.0.x versions and now the most current release is 3.1.5.
I know that the new version can be installed manually frmo the apk file, but im just wondering why the update hasnt been pushed out to the phone like it has been with most other android handsets.
It seems that none of the HTC phones have had the new market pushed out over the air. As far as I am aware market updates get pushed out direct from google?
Anyone know why Desire S hasnt received it?

It hasn't been updated because HTC are VERY slow on the update side of things as we all know!
Also, the latest version of the market is infact 3.3.11
and it can be found HERE
Just download the apk and run it from your phone. This will update your market to the latest version
I thought market updates don't come frmo the phone manufacturer, but got pushed out direct by google?

well either way whoever is responsible for it hasn't done their job properlly. If you want it just download it from my link and install it yourself
It came preinstalled with my sense 3 update. But I didn't like it. It loaded every page very very slow that I had to uninstall it to get the older one.
I flashed the 2.10.401.5 RUU (Android 2.3.5, sense 3.0) ROM and it didtn actualyl come with the new market. it still had the old green top one. However upon loading the market for the first time, seeing the green top one, then closing the market. It auto updated itself, changed tothe newer style icon on the homescreen, and now has 3.1.5. Strange why it auto updated on this rom, but never did on the 2.3.3 one.
Hi everyone, I'm new to xda here's the link for the Android market 3.3.11 Its working for my desire s. Use qr Droid app to download
I used the old version, temporarily do not want to upgrade it.
On the stock Inspire ROMs, it looks like you are blocked from clearing the Market data (Settings>Applications>Market>Clear data). Also, it appears that the Market app is locked to never update past version 2.3.4.
Has anyone figured out how this is done and/or why?
I know you can side-load a newer Market APK, which will then auto-update but I'm curious why it is the way it is.
That's interesting. I see no reason why the Market would be locked on an old version, especially since Google is now changing everything to Google Play. Here's the apk if you want to do it manually.
