[Q] Gmail app update - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

So I found out that Google released a new update to their Gmail application and I wanted to update the version of Gmail I have on my phone. However I'm unable to update it because according to Google's servers I don't have it installed even though I do. I believe this is because the Gmail app I currently have came with Cyanogen Mod 6. I'm curious as to how, if at all possible, to update my Gmail app to the latest app because I'm unable to uninstall the current one I have.

Download titanium backup from the market, make a nandroid backup incase something goes wrong, then use titanium backup to uninstall the gmail app, then restart your phone and install gmail from the market

Thanks for your suggestion however I still couldn't install the newest gmail update. It kept saying that installation failed. I'm not sure why. Does anyone else have an idea?

i had that happen after the uninstall i just restarted my phone and then it worked
but im not sure other than using ADB to push it, i would forum search for instructions on how to do it.
but the way i posted worked for me on my hero with cm6

You don't have that option on the captivate. Ignore it. Make sure you got the latest version of TB. Launch the application. Click on problems. Let it install busybox (yea yea you have it)... and it should be ok.
thanks for that...along the same lines, i am trying to re-install my media hub apk, using appsinstaller, say the phone is blocked from non market apps....i am using SRE 1.2.1a
I'm not sure about that.. but..

there's a link to the apk again. Try to sideload it.. or first try to make sure you actually have market access .. here's an app to test it: Furdiburb
look for it in the marketplace and if you are able to download/install it then something's up @[email protected] and I'm not quite sure as I've never used appinstaller.
For the captivate you have to edit settings.db to enable non-market apk files to install. There is a guide on these forums and on wiki sites. It's not that difficult.
Reply back if you want more information.
Titainum backup will not restore properly unless that settings.db is edited.

How to keep apps from installing as soon as I install rom?

Everytime I install a new rom and reboot, apps start automatically installing. This is without me even installing titanium backup first.
The reason this is a problem is because I still have to go back and reinstall every single app to get it to show in my installed apps area in the market, so I won't get update notifications unless I reinstall the app first anyways.
Its obviously not titanium backup doing this because it starts doing it even before I install titanium from the market. What is doing this? Its freaking annoying.

Just skip the google set up and do not sync any data yet upon initial boot up when flashing a new ROM. If needed you can manually input your wifi info if you need that to connect. Normally I skip all that stuff and then just use titanium backup to restore app+data ONLY and do not restore system data. This may corrupt your phone in a way that you'll need to restore your nandroid backup.
Like kpjimmy said, just skip the google log in from the first set up page that you see when installing a new ROM, then go to Menu>Settings>Privacy and place a check mark in the 'Back up my data' box and remove the check mark from 'Automatic restore'. Now you can log in on your google account from 'Accounts & sync' and your done.
Thanks guys.

[Q] Weird problem with market link after restoring with my backup pro!

Guys see when I did a restore with my backup pro, all my apps got linked to the market! The apk ones also and when I broke the link they all come under not installed! And my whole app list in the market was erased! How can I get back my list of only market installed apps? Plus even when I factory reset it and install all apps manually, it does not come properly! And even if I install an app from the market the whole thing comes back like that! Please Please Help Me!
likely has to do with market cache, among other things. the good news is, selecting to install them again won't wipe the data
So what should I do to get only market installed app list back! Its very confusing! It linked all my apps to the market on its on!
were you restoring a previous backup from cwm using backup pro? I don't have the app and don't know how it works. if you were, then why not restore using cwm and using titanium to backup your market? this should help save the market data to reuse after using that backup pro app...
Its this simple
Download Titanum backup>open>menu>market doctor>market auto updates
This would attach the links of user app to the Market.
Guys no ur not getting the problem! All my 280 apps apk installed ones and also including market apps have been linked to the market! I want only my market(user) apps to be there! Should I try making a new account!
ok to remove the apps u needo follow the same steps but insteat in titanium backup>menu>market tool>destroy all market links.
then reattach them

I have only market auto updates and market doctor no market tools!
To remove all market link do this
Goto Titanium>"Menu button">Market tools> Select destroy all market links
To reattach
instead destroy all market links select market doctor.
See even when I break market links all apps including user and apk come under not installed! I guess I have to make a new account!

After destorying, try using market doctor the attach the links back. You can try force attaching an app to the market too, go to backup/restore and long press the app and select force attach to the market. It should work
Cheers

How about this:
Delete all Market links
Remove the google account from the phone
Delete all app data of the market apk
Restart the phone
Open market app
Enter account
See if the my apps list is clean
If it is, restore only the links you want to have to.

I fianlly understand your problem. Here's what you can try. Backup the app using titanium backup, uninstall the app and install it again manually(without data). Then restore the data and check if its under the list. Btw, can you see all your apps? If you can't, try reinstalling.
Cheers

Try this (I really don't know if it works)
1) Settings=>Privacy Settings=>Back up my data and uncheck everything
2) Settings=>Applications=>Manage applications=>Market=>Clear data
If in 1) checkboxs are already unchecked... well, it won't work
edit:
If the apps appear as installed, try to break again the links with Titatiun Backup

No dude did not work! Guess its a problem with the account!
Did you try as I said? I had a similar issue time ago and I couldn't solve it, so I want to know if doing as I explained will solve the problem.
Quoting from here:
If you check this option, a wide variety of your personal data is backed up, including your Wi-Fi passwords, Browser bookmarks, a list of the applications you’ve installed from Market, the words you’ve...

What I think is: you restored the apps, then the market recognized them as market apps and added them to the "installed applications" list. Finally Android backed up that list. So now, when you break the links with Titanium Backup, Android Market shows them as "not installed" because they are in that list and considers them as not installed.
Its ok guys! I made a new account!

[Q] Titanium Backup Restore

I upgraded my MIUI rom to 2.2.17 and wanted to restore my apps using tb donate version. When I go to batch restore, a force close box pops up every time. I've already done a fresh wipe, fixed permissions, and installed busybox from the problems tab on tb, but none of them worked. Any solutions?
1. Is it a clean install of ROM?
2. Are you restoring only missing apps and data?

Is the root on for your MIUI...believe in the settings you have to turn it on, that would keep TB from working correctly.
I purchased the key via the market...best $$ spent, When ever I put a fresh ROM on, I install TB & key, and then reinstall my "apps only" not apps with data.
Titanium Backup
I plunked down the $$$ for the paid version. Never had any problems with the app.
I do know that when coming from a Froyo based Rom (or stock) to a GB based ROM you aren't supposed to restore apps and data. Just apps.
The one issue I've had with TB is that even though I restore all my apps, and they work fine, the apps are now disconnected from the Android market. Meaning the market no longer thinks I have them installed on my phone. Won't receive any updates when that is the case. I even tried the Market tools within the app. Those didn't resolve the issue.
I went from Stock Froyo to Infused 2.2.3 to Zeus v5. In both cases, I had to manually re-install my apps on the market. Not a huge deal, but an inconvenience.

There is an option is TiBu that allows you to attach the app to market. Try using it. It should solve your issue. It works for me for certain apps like dropbox and google voice that I don't want to upgrade. Turned it back on for google voice recently and it worked.
I could have swore that the op for miui said to never restore apps with tibu..could be wrong idk

Now that i think about it in qbking77 video tutorial he kinda made it out like you should should use other means of restoring...tibu last option and your right apps without data

One thing you can try - uninstall tibu (both paid & free) then reinstall in order - free, then key. I've had issues where app "keys" seem to get installed first and the app won't wort properly.

Problem with updates.

I'm rooted and running the newest eclipse ROM. Im having trouble when updating apps such as gmail and such. The error code is saying that the package file was not signed correctly and that I must uninstall to configure. Doesn't work.. Any similar issues?

Sometimes if you restored apps through titanium or something similar you might just have to uninstall then reinstall through the play store. Save the data through titanium and if the new reinstall works just restore data only.
