Did a search, so sorry if I missed it. But, a couple of questions.
1) If you have root, is it possible to download and save PDF and Word files that come in on POP3 (or even gmail) email?
2) Otherwise, does anyone know the phone folder where these files are temporarily store while on the phone, and can they be accessed that way?
I spend a lot of time overseas, and going back and forth to the web to retrieve is a pain and expensive. Thanks
Forget it, I solved the issue.
Informing use how you solved the issue might help others
I'd be really interested in how you managed this, I've searched here, and Googled everywhere (almost). But I still haven't found what I'm looking for...

lol...gotta love these types of posts right?
I'm able to save attachments like this using k-9 mail., for those interested
Sorry to go AWOL -- had to leave the country for a bit. My apologies.
Yeah, I also "solved" it by using K9. But, I find the program very buggie.
On a larger, related question, how does the Android platform make its file associations? In other words, when I receive an email attachment (with the stock app), it will allow me to download and save that attachment to my SD card only if there is an onboard, associated program. I can download .jpg, because Android has an application built in that will read a jpg. So, if I want to download a .doc file, I can't unless there is an appropriate app onboard. (Although k9 seems to have found a way). Where, in the Android platform, is this association made? And, is it possible (with a rooted phone) to somehow manipulate those associations to allow downloading of ANY (or a chosen few) files?
For instance, I find that if I change the file extension on a Word doc (for example) from "doc" to "jpg", my onboard email will allow me to download and save to SD card. So, it obviously CAN do it, what's stopping it?
Again, sorry for "skipping out" in the midst of a thread.
Download Crutch Lite in the market allows you to download any file by making Android believe it can open any filetype.
Theres a app called download crutch on the market that allows downloading of files that may not have associated applications. Not exactly sure what file types it supports but its worth a shot.
EDIT: Fushichou got it before me but heres a link to Cyrket http://www.cyrket.com/search?q=download+crutch
Thanks, but my experience is that Crutch will not work on email attachments. It seems to be an internet based device. I used it for a while. Partially, this is a kind of tech question -- how are the files associated?
Hi all.
I wrote an application that replaces the Library Manager that comes with the new Manila e-book reader tab (which is not of much use, if you don't have an account for Borders).
After installation, the application will start when you click the "Library" menu of the new reader tab.
You can use the application to access the books in your library, but also to import books you already have on your PDA into the new Manila tab.
It will import e-books in the .epub format, but also in lots of other formats.
The Manila tab will only show the ones in .epub format, but from this new library you can access the e-books in the other formats as well (at least, if the appropriate reader application is installed on your PDA).
This application assumes that each of your e-books is located in its own folder.
If an image file is located in a folder that contains an e-book, the application will automatically assume that the image represents the bookcover.
If an .opf file is located in the folder (which is a standard format for saving metadata with e-books), the application will automatically get the title, the name of the author and the name of the publisher of the e-book from that .opf file.
See the screenshots to get an idea of the look and feel of the application.
To install the application on your PDA, download the .cab file, copy it to your PDA and run it there.
Release history:
In version 0.3 the robustness was enhanced significantly.
In version 0.2 a number of small user-interface enhancements were made.
Thank you. Very useful program.
Thx...
How to add national fonts to Manila HTCReader ??
Thank you very much...
Your application works better, but i need to move to another tab then return to e-reader tab if i want to see the added books.

Djurkash, does your ROM include the Manila e-book reader tab?
My application only works if the reader tab is available (and working).

Hi.
I just posted version 0.2; the flow through the user interface is more Manila-like now.
@OABsoftware, sure it does... like I said, it happens when hitting library button
tried to reinstall, but it's the same...is it possible that problem is caused cause I changed my book.db file through ebookindexer?
I'm really liking this app...I have a request however, is it possible to have this app work with the other native built-in e-book functions as well?
What is happening is even if you click on the 'Menu' > Shop or Account Settings, it is redirecting to your app. I would prefer if the app was launched only when you clicked on the 'Library' link. That way people who have Adobe & Borders accounts can still get books via those means also.
Thanks

does look to be that.. I had the same error and changed back to be the original and it works fine. import is great, even with all the books in one folder..
It also beats the 20 limit.. just added all the books from my sd card
need to go back to calibre and redo them to fit the new system
@fards,
I confirm this, have restored original book.db, and now is working flawlessly...

Hi,
Does anyone know of an app that can create a mirror of a website, or download the whole website (with filters for filename or filetype). In particular I need to rip off images from the site.
On a PC this can be done with Httrack Web Copier or offline browsers.
Thanks!!

wget is the easiest way, and I think it's included with busybox
Theres also an app called "SD Card Offline HTML Browser".
Thanks guys.
SD Card Offline HTML browser can only view sites stored on the SD that were ripped from wget etc. But that will be handy too.
I'm looking more into wget (I do have it just need to learn how to use it). I guess this is only for root though.
My app WebLiveWallpaper can do this for images as a byproduct. Select 'Dump all images' in 'System Settings'.
You can do a lot of stuff there in the 'Advanced Settings' with regular expressions.
I am also working on extracting and enhancing this functionality (also dump complete websites) into a separate app but this will take some more time ...

man, your app is really cool...it looks like something different but it has a ton of options...if u can develop this further into a complete image/content extraction tool. this would be awesome
ive been playing around with it but havent been able to do what i have wanted yet...will try some more!
Firstly, I am having some problems with wget: it does not resolve hostnames
Even when I give it an IP address, it still picks up another hostname from somewhere that it cant resolve...I think its a known problem, but I dont know how to update my busybox or wget
Secondly, WebLiveWallpaper is a deceptively good program, but I have 2 problems with it. Firstly it is VERY slow (even with WiFi) in downloading and dumping the images. Secondly I had problems in grabbing images from multiple levels above. It works fine if all the images are on the same page. But nevertheless it does the trick.
WebLiveWallpaper app: if you did not already use you should try advanced settings static gallery set to a high number. That will speed up loading after the first picture very, very much. The app needs to explain everything better but I have not enough time ...

Hi everyone
I uploaded my new app to the Play store yesterday, but figured I'd post here too
Here's the link: Pictures Near Me
It does what it says on the tin really, shows pictures near your current location, and you can view a map showing where you are in relation to it. The main aim is it might be useful on vacation to find interesting or less obvious stuff to go visit.
I've tested on my Galaxy Nexus, and also the emulator under 2.3. A few friends have tried it on various handsets, but that's still not very representative. Please let me know if it breaks, or any features you'd like to see (I'm already thinking of adding Panoramio support and also a map-view for the 'index'
2013-02-12 1.9 released. Adds location search and picture saving.
2013-01-21 1.8 released. Performance improvements and Daydream screensaver
2012-11-27 1.7 released. Pan around Map search results to view photos in other locations
2012-10-29 1.5 released. Added pinman to map-search results.
2012-10-25 1.4 released. Added caching of search results to help performance.
2012-10-22 1.3 released. New Map View of search results
2012-07-30 1.2 released. Adds navigation button, larger thumbnails, and more columns on tablet devices.
2012-07-19 1.1 released, see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29020922&postcount=7
Works Ok once I put the search area up to maximum. Currently in South end on sea UK.
Using HTC One X.
Cheers

Congrats, your app has crossed the Atlantic and reached your country's old colonies, haha. North Carolina, kind of middle of nowhere. Default settings had it show the same Pepsi truck twice; I set it to the max (32km?) and now a bunch of stuff is coming up.
This is really neat. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks , this is a sweet app.
Glad it seems to work - surprised at the lack of pictures coming up, in my little town there's quite a lot! But then we get a fair few tourists.
I've pushed version 1.1 live to the Play store.
This adds a few new features, specifically:
- share pictures you find with your friends via many of your other apps (Facebook, Twitter, Email etc.)
- picture descriptions now shown
- added an approximate address of the picture when viewing the map
- added warning when your location not found
- pinch-to-zoom when viewing picture full-size
I've just updated to 1.2.
This adds more thumbnail columns on tablets, and increases the size on phones. Also there's now a button to launch Google Navigation while viewing the photo
This is a great little app! I like it :good:

Pictures Near Me has been updated to 1.3 - now you get the option of viewing search results in a grid as before, or on a map to give a bit more context of what's around you.
The update should be live in the Play Store now.
Next version I'm looking at caching the search results and thumbnails to speed it up when you repeat search in a similar location to previously...
1.4 released today.
I've added caching so repeat searches in the same kinda area should be noticeably faster.
1.5 released. Small update to show Pinman on the map-search screen so you can see where all the results are in relation to you before tapping through to an individual picture
A few more updates have been rolled out- you can now pan around the map to view photos from other locations!
New update released!
Repeat searches in a location are now much faster as more information is cached
I've also added a "daydream" screensaver option!
this is indeed a nice little app.. thx!

a few ideas for ur consideration..
(1) put an option to show/hide the "cache" folder in/from other gallery apps (a .nomedia file trick maybe).. or to make it simpler just put a .nomedia file there as its a "cache" folder after all..
(normally the cache folder files are named cryptically and wont interfere with gallery app, however, i found out that there were a few properly-named files in the cache folder with a JPG extension.. they probably appeared after i have viewed the photo in the app.. and its those JPG files that showed up in my gallery app..)
(2) an export function to save a downloaded image to other locations..

Currently the cache images don't have the .jpg name. Adding this would be fairly easy, but the filenames bear no relation to the original image- they are actually from the hash of the URL the image came from. Changing this to be a more logical name would be non-trivial.
Adding an option in the picture details screen to simply save the current image to the gallery is possible though, so I'll add this for the next release. I'm also looking to add a location search option to the home-screen; as one user left a negative review in the Play store saying they couldn't search elsewhere (you can, you just need to pan around the map) - they also said the images were rubbish, and obviously didn't spot you can order by interestingness. Unfortunately the play store doesn't let me reply to comments

for the JPG issue, i did find out that in the cache folder there was 1 JPG file (which was an image that i have viewed in details screen), and im fairly certain that this file was created by this app, and not any other apps as no app would mess with this app's cache folder..
i have viewed a number of images for details and only this one particular JPG file appeared.. i dunno why maybe u can investigate a little..
for negative comments in the play store, u can just ignore them as few users would admit that its their own problem not able to use an app.. most of the times they blamed the apps..
First of all, sorry for my english. I know thats not so good, but I think you can understand it
In this guide I'll teach how to install almost any TTS language (non-robotic) so your device can read things in your native language without problems.
1) Plug your device on computer and create a folder named VocalizerEx
2) Download and install on your device the attached APK
3) Visit this website and download your language. It will be better if you download Premium High
3) Rename that file adding .zip at the end and open it
4) Extract all files and folders of the zip to this folder (created on Step 1)
(Now you can unplug your device)
5) On your device, go to Settings > Language and Input > Text-to-speech output and then select VocalizerEx TTS
Done, now your device speaks your language !
Please, hit THANKS if it helped you
Thx a lot ! works fine with igo primo
Sorry, but it didn't work on AOSB KitKat.
I have several folder (dun, eng, frf, ged, ...) in the ExtSdCard\VocalizerEx folder, installed the APK.
I can select VocalizerEx TTS in the text output, but in the settings the language selection is disabled.
So, I tried to change the Voice data folder in the settings to the folder I put the voices in. Still, it didn't work, even after selecting another engine and back to reinitialize the VocalizerEx TTS engine.
Can anyone help me with this?
Edit: Got it working, somehow the appplication doesn't look for the correct folder, despite the possibility to put the voice data on SD card.
Now I have to get iGo with Dutch TTS voice going with this - strange thing is that iGo ONLY works when the Google TTS engine with English language is selected... If not, there is no way to select a TTS voice in iGo.
hi,
how do we let the program speak the text? i want it to read my smses and caller id. but i dont know how to do.
ps. i installed the apk, formed the folder , and extracted the zip file (premium voices) into it.

I agree, these voices are great! I've been looking for tts this good for months and just randomly found this thread. Works perfect on LOS 14.1. Just wanted to share some findings for future readers. You can hear samples of these voices here: http://codefactoryglobal.com/speech-technology/voice-licensing.
After finding that page, I noticed that some of the better english voices (e.g. english-uk malcolm and oliver) weren't available at the vocalizer-nvda site originally mentioned. As discussed here: http://forum.audiogames.net/viewtopic.php?id=22240, those voices are found elsewhere and need a more recent version of the apk. In that thread, they provide a link to a zip that contains the more recent apk and a few additional files needed here: http://www.tyflonet.com/siciliano/VocalizerEx2_TTS.zip
Once you extract the zip and install the apk, create a "VocalizerEx2" dir in your main user dir (should be /storage/emulated/0) and copy the "languages/common" dir from the zip to that dir. You can then download the newer voices from here: http://blindhelp.net/software/vocalizer-expressive-nvda/voices. Choose your language and hit apply as not all the voices they have are in the list first shown.
Download the voices you want and as with the original instructions, add a .zip extension to the downloaded file(s), extract, and copy the contents into the VocalizerEx2 dir you created. You can have multiple voices in that dir that you select by changing the language within the android tts settings for the "VocalizerEx2 TTS" engine.
Also, just as a final note, there is an app called "Vocalizer TTS Voice (English)" in the play store that provides/uses the same voices but is a different app and not what you want.
Thanks for the info.
btw, you don't need to add zip extension to the files if you use 7zip, a free and open source archiver/extractor. With the 'shell context menu' option enabled you can extract many files (that are actually some kind of archive), then just right click >7z >extract/open archive
I have tried everything mentioned here but it's still not working for me.
My device is a car head unit with android 7.1.1.
I installed vocalizerex (tried both 1 and 2) and created the folder VocalizerEx in /storage/emulated/0 with the downloaded voice inside this folder.
I can see the tts engine in settings but there is also another engine preinstalled (pico tts). If I select vocalizerex and go into its settings I can see and select my voice but it's never working. Also if I exit and enter the tts settings again the selected engine is always the pico tts.
Could it be a permissions issue and how could it be fixed on an unrooted device?

Have you changed the actual location of "VocalizerEx" folder in application settings ?
If no, change it in application settings to the actual location of the folder (for example, "/storage/emulated/0/VocalizerEx. exit settings and enter again, you should see your language as supported and listening to voice sample may work after that.
If you put the folder on sd card, maybe you have to grant application access to sd card, as I don't have android 7, you could probably find how to do it easily.

The engine is failing to initialize, either because it may require a reboot just after changing the default TTS engine, but I guess that it would be painful to try it several times (or at least once) in a car head unit, or it did'nt found required drivers/interface in the device.
For example, I still have a galaxy s3 with a custom stock ROM in which, SamsungTTS.apk was removed, every attemp to set a TTS engine failed till I grabbed the apk from another ROM and installed it as a regular application, after what, every TTS engine worked flawlessly.
BTW, did your unit came with the car or was it an aftermarket one ? Some after market units have their rom set to read only, not allowing to change any of default system settings or using any other preinstalled application, it may sound weird but I had seen such (faulty ?) units.
As a last attemp, you could probably "root" the unit, backup the system before doing anything in case something goes wrong, then force remove pico tts engine so the system will be "forced" to deal with the new voice engine. This is only a suggestion, if you are not familiar with such process, I highly recommend you to read througly the appropriate information available for your device before making any pricey mistake.

Is there any way to install an apk like you did, that would include the required drivers for the tts?
The pico tts is working so I think the reason might be a permissions issue. Could I change somehow this behaviour without rooting my device?

Generally, aftermarket means poor if no software support, they manage to get the latest android along with a series of production and stop at that step, they also may relase a poorly designed firmware that has an unsolved bug. If an official firmware update doesn't solve the issue for you, you should try the following suggestion, it does'nt require root, but it may require an extensive search without guarantee to find something suitable, here's how to proceed:
- As your unit is an aftermarket one, it is certainly a single SoC (System on Chip), usually a Rockchip RK31xx but it may be anything else. If you cannot open the unit to see the chip without messing it up, I suggest you to find a way to identify it exactly. Either looking with your reseller, or by seeing at the site where you could find firmware update. The filename of the update file may also give you the answer or a manufacturer code for the chip which you have to identify. Needless to say that the shortest path is to go straight and open carefully the unit, which may require to teardown a "warranty void" label, it's up to you.
- Find a phone that uses the exact Chip as your device (it may be any chinese cheap phone), IT HAS TO BE THE EXACT CHIP. No prefixe nor suffixe, not even a letter in difference, otherwise it may not work. Try googling "[YOUR CHIP NAME] based phones / devices"
- Look for a ROM / Official Firmware for that particular phone (or any other similar chip device if no success).
- Find a way to extract system apk's (it may be painful...) and try to identify any application related to tts, you can proceed by elimination. Usually TTS works fine with phones as it is more likely to be used in comparison to android based computers (TV boxes, gps, car units).
- Install what you extracted in your car unit and proceed with the VocalizerEx steps above.
For your second question, to change permissions (I guess file permissions) you have either to root you device or use ADB with usb connection to a laptop, with appropriate USB drivers required for your device (the chip...once again) and some technical stuff that includes CHMOD command I'm not familiar with ... you may find help around in xda.
- Good luck :fingers-crossed:
no Hindi or Tamil, why?

I tried to search for "VocalizerEx2" and found some hits, but in all these zip-files, there is no folder "languages/common". And it seems, without this content, it will not work. I have downloaded some voices as described and I can choose VocalizerEx2 as TTS-Engine (I checked the correct path), and I can also select my downloaded voices, but there is no noise if I press the button for Example-Voice. Is it possible to renew the link to that zip with the additional content please?
