I was wondering if it would be possible to assign a long press of the back button to turn the screen off instead of clicking the power button. I heard that peoples buttons have gone out quickly and I try to avoid hitting the power button to prevent this.

Either lower the screen time-out, or just use the power button.
By the time it breaks you'll be wanting something else anyway.

I agree.
I haven't had any problems with my power button and I use the power button to shut the screen off a lot. Hopefully it stays like that.
search for Lock Screen Widget in the market. Totally free and all it does is just turn the screen off. not as simple as holding the back button but it does the trick nicely
if you're using cm 6 you can download LockEnabler and set it to the long press home action. Only side effect is you have to wait 6 seconds to turn the screen back on
There is an app called no lock. With this app you can unlock the screen with track ball or volume + -
So if you use the lock screen widget to turn the screen off and use no lock to turn it on again, you will never need to push the power button...just for first boot.
HAHAHA!
I had massive problem with my power button, my NEXUS has been serviced twice due to the same issue... so just use Lock Screen Widget to minimize the physical usage of power button.
Power button and mic were well known hardware issues so good luck with it!
Thanks for the suggestions they really helped and I appreciate it. How do I get this deleted?

Doesn't need to be. It will slowly get moved off the first page, second and so on unless people continue posting. Maybe it will help others too.

Due to the power button issues with the Nexus One I would like to see an app developed for adding a power button widget to limit the amount of abuse our physical power buttons must endure.
With all the great devs here on XDA, I am sure that someone will be able to get this app up and running for all of us Nexus One owners. (Tmo, AT&T, Verizon, etc.)
Launch Market. Search for "reboot control" and there you have it: a widget that lets you reboot, power down, reboot into recovery, wipe handset, reboot into bootloader.
and an app to turn off your screen instead of hitting the power button or waiting for it to go into standby?

Yes, as well as the other common power button controls
Are there any reboot apps that don't require ROOT?

no need for an app.
just click vol-down, trackball and the power button all at the same time and it'll reboot.

Thanks for the tip! I do like a software solution though as well. My question still stands, is there a power button widget that doesn't require rooting my new phone?

I don't think there is. If you can't run reboot in a terminal without root access then I doubt there is an app that can do it.
I would love a widget that would allow you to cut off the screen.
After trackball wakeup trick we only need widget to put phone in sleep and i'll surely forget about power button who is very hard to reach one handed
Anybody?
Ok, the story is, my phone goes to sleep every 30 secs to save battery. And since I'm still very excited about it, I turn it on quite often, just to check . And the only way to turn on from sleep (as far as I know) is pressing the power button. Well, that means that button will be pressed a lot! I'm just worrying that it will soon have problems. It would be much cooler if we can touch some Android button down there, Home button for example, to turn on the phone. Do you know anyway to do that?
PS: I tried to google as well as search through out this forum, but the keywords are pretty common, so it's really hard though.
I wouldn't want the capacitive buttons activating my phone, think of all the butt-dialing
I think Widget Locker allows for any hardware button to wake up the device, so then you'd be able to distribute the fun between your volume rocker and the power button.
Widget locker does allow the use of the volume rocker to wake up the phone.
a short term fix or you might be to got o settings-->Applications-->Development-->Stay awake....
so as long as you are charging the screen will not sleep. dont forget to change the setting back if you walk away for a bit... or go to bed
Thanks guy. I think the volume button is good enough

thanks rumur, i going to give widget locker a try.
i hate it must reach for power button to wakeup!
i like "Simply Lockscreen", it also turns on cappy with volume buttons.
give it a try
On a similar note, do you all have any app tips that will allow me to do something special with the volume button while the screen is off (maybe long press or double click, or press both volume buttons at once) that will in turn toggle silent/vibrate on and off?
I'm wondering if there's a way to make it so other buttons will wake the phone so you see the lock screen. Ideally the home button, but I'd be happy with just the volume rocker
There is an app and it works really well.... I forgot the name though

It's called No Lock
I may use no lock since I can't seem to find a good lock screen that will show email sms and weather. However I meant how can I get the phone to respond to more than just the power button from a black screen...
Thanks anyway
widgetlocker able to show emails and other widgets.
it able to wakeup phone with volume keys "sometimes".

This is actually my biggest gripe about the phone! Only way to wake it is to hit the power button. Lame. Unless someone knows something I don't
If you enable No Lock you can use the volume rocker as well as the power button to wake the phone

Weird. Not for me. Only power button awakens. I'm running Launcher Pro... wonder if that could be it?
I wish that the screen would turn on when you click any of the bottom 4 buttons, it was like that on my storm and I believe its like that on the droid X as well. Its just much easier to press than the unlock button.
Also has anyone noticed that there is a bit of lag from when you press the power button to when the screen appears?
Try Widget Locker Lock Screen in the Android Market. It's $1.99.

It's likely that you can "hack" this functionality into the ROM then. Adrynalyne did so with the Fascinate where any physical button will wake the phone, so I don't see why it couldn't be done on the Charge.
I found NoLED when I get an IM, email or SMS and I press home button to get to the unlock screen. A friend of mine uses No Lock that lets him unlock the screen with the home button.

YES!
Very very very annoying. And the brightness level takes even longer to ramp up once the screen is on, after the lag. Ugh.
Thanks in advance!
WidgetLocker has the ability
Just tried it, checked the box in settings, but no dice
Uninstalled and got a refund.
Any others?
no lock?
or
Screen Off and Lock?
Thanks, already tried both of them because they worked on my og evo, but no such luck
Coming from the galaxy s2 I do miss the power button on the side, hoping to find a solution still

Actually, I used to have a Nexus One and the power button was broken. To circumvent that, I had to use an app called AnyUnlock. I turned the screen on with the volume rocker and you could also use a widget to turn the screen off (rather than using the power button to turn the screen off). Which I suppose could be useful if you have smaller fingers or something and didn't want to make the reach. Very, very useful app when your power button stops functioning.

I'm sure it uses the same method that the other apps use and it even says in the description on their app page that it only works on Froyo and GB.
Yea seems like all of them don't work with ics urrrrrrrrr

Volume Rocker Wake works on CM9 Alpha 5
I've been using CM9 Alpha 5 for a few hours now and it's great !
The first think I set was the Volume Rocker Wake as the Power Button is not as easy to press when using most cases covering the power button.
To enable it, go to SETTING --> DISPLAY --> VOLUME ROCKER WAKE
it enables waking the phone by pressing the volume rocker EITHER up/down.
There is no way to specify one or the other
However, it works great ! I'm really liking CM9, my only complaint is the missing HTC Camera which was just amazing with the hardware burst (I'm still looking for a way to flash it if that's even possible).
