How can I check to see if I still have root? - Hero CDMA Android Development

Is there a quick way I can check to see if I still have root access? I'm trying to install SetCPU and it says it can't get root access.
I rooted my phone a couple weeks ago and have been running CM6 RC1 since then. Yesterday I flashed the Decad3nce kernel #11 (seemed to go ok) in hopes of overclocking and when I ran SetCPU it cannot get root access. Any quick tips out there?

Download terminal emulator (free) in the market. In the app type "su" and u should see "#" come up. That means u have root
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App

I tried
$ su
permission denied
$
wonder how i lost it? more importantly, how can i get it back? or do i have to go back to Sprint RUU and start from scratch?

Thanks, worked like a charm! Any idea what would cause me to lose root in the first place? So i don't do it again...
(and thanks also for answering in both posts)

No problem Sometimes when changing roms, su permission gets lost in translation. Not really something you can control unfortunately, just a rom thing sometimes. Let me know if you need anything else!

If you don't have superuser app, chances are you don't have root

Root Methods

I thought I might as well start this thread. The only root method I currently know of is http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/04/30/instructions-how-to-root-the-verizon-samsung-droid-charge/
I have read that z4root works as well, can anyone confirm this? I will be receiving my DROID Charge tomorrow and will try z4root.

Root however you want to, keep us updated on how it works out.
The method in the first post works well. In step 5 after adb shell you will need to input chmod 755 /data/local/GingerBreak or you will get a permission denied error when trying to run gingerbreak.
Just got my Charge from work finally, will root today and keep you guys posted. I will try z4root first to see if it can be done easily.

What does that mean "just got from work"? Were you able to purchase one? I backed down on getting one from Best Buy at the last minute on the Sunday after the missed launch (they were willing to sell it to me), but when I tried to get one the other day, no sale!
Sorry for the delay, z4root does not work nor does superoneclick method. You need to use adb and add in step 5 that was previously posted. Worked for me. Also to clarify i work for verizon and I was able to get one early, I will not be paying for it until I get back from vacation so we do not get flagged in our commission system.
The adb method using Gingerbreak is broken by the OTA update that just came out as some of us more overeager updaters have learned. Here's hoping for a revised method soon!
I figured that ota did more then something usless. I will not be taking it, my phone has been running great rooted for almost 2 weeks.
Anyone know what I have to do to get rid of the ota notification? I'm rooted but the constant asking me to update now or later is annoying.
Well i did the OTA update because I did what I needed with the root. I will try to get a way to re root and get back to you guys.
when will the ota updated charge get a root?
I was screwed from the start. the guy at verizon updated my phone afer he activated in the back.
I ended up taking the ota after I had frozen all the bloat. I'm guessing the OTA fixed some serious battery issues because this morning at work I went from 100% to 60% in one hour with light usage. I don't know if this was a software issue or because my office is fringe 4g... my phone constantly goes back and forth from 3 to 4.
The rest of the day though after I let the ota install, battery life was much much better.
Found this over Droidpolice forum
At step 5 after adb shell you will need to input chmod 755 /data/local/GingerBreak before doing /data/local/GingerBreak this enables the permissions
Has anyone tries this?

Tried and failed with ED02. This was mentioned a few replies up.
Any chance we can get the OP edited?
If you are rooted then go to the build.prop and change all instances of E1 to E2 that should get rid of the notifications as you are tricking the updater into thinking its updated. If you already on E2 you are SOL until a new root method is posted. I got my charge yesterday and Verizon dude updated the phone before I had a chance to tell him not to. I figure I will wait. All I want is root for titanium backup. Ive been happy with this phone.

[Q] Lost root access. [SOLVED]

For some reason, I randomly lost root access. I'm not sure how or why, but I'm not sure how to get it back. I don't feel like wiping my phone and reflashing/rerooting. Any suggestions? Running CM7.1.0.

Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
Well, it's not totally lost, just broken. Superuser still shows when apps try to get root, but it doesn't give it root. I can't use adblockers or root explorer. Adfree says "Unable to locate a partition to remount to write the hosts file to."

unlock help?!

Hi. I believe I have unlocked my HBOOT, as it sais unlocked. And I have flashed the CWM as I now have super su installed.
I would like to root it and want to know what else i can do to it?
I have on android 4.0.3 1.27.0000
what else can i do? can someone help me please? thanks in advanced!
If you have SU installed your phone is rooted. CWM is a recovery, and doesn't have anything to do with SU other than you need root to get either one.
You are already rooted.
Just out of curiosity, why did you root your phone if you have no idea what it does? What are you trying to attain with root access?

Well yes it is on there, when i flashed the zip and rebooted, it was on there.
And well, a friend of mine had a s2 and he had the hacked sky go app, and tbh that sounded amazing.
That is what i wanted. The main reason really. But someone said about having s-off on it. But it is still on s-on.

I see, I'm not sure what the hacked sky go app does, does it enable you to watch Sky Channel wherever you are?
You can still be rooted with S-On, you just cannot perform certain low level functions.
You currently are rooted with CWM installed, so go ahead and install the APK you are looking to and grant it root permissions when asked, but be careful what you install.

Yeah I have tried to install the apk, but it wont come up on super su for permission. I try and open the sky go apk and it says sky has stopped working. When I click on the super su, only lucky patcher is on there. No other apps are on there. Do I have to install the full verson of super su?

you have to successfully open the app in order for it to ask for SU permission and then for you to allow it, the fact that it force closes means it's not even getting a chance to ask for SU before it FCs.
Either the apk is bad or conflicting with your system.
Boot into CWM and go to Advanced, Fix Permissions and reboot, see if you can open it now. Otherwise try to find another hacked APK and let's see if that works.

[Q] Need help "unrooting" or flashing a stock Rom. Verizon LG G2 vs980

I am kinda in a pickle here. I was rooting my phone using this Chinese .exe application and it had a big check Mark on the screen so I unplugged my phone. Mistake. It turns out that it kinda rooted my phone. No root apps work because the super su app that it downloaded with root was not working. I opened it up and it said I had to update my su binaries or something so I hit continue and it had an error that it couldn't download. I then tried installing titanium backup to try and uninstall it but sense I need super su to give it root, I can't uninstall it because of the super su problem. I tried installing superuser and it didn't work. Now I'm stuck because I can't fully root my phone with other ways which I have no idea why and i can't uninstall the bad super su app because I need it to work for me to be able to do it. I tried flashing my rom again but this stupid error saying I had to have internet to update software kept me from doing that and I DID have full internet access. I am stuck. Why can't their be just some extreme data reset that REALLY resets your phone. My phone still works fine but I have cod and having this problem is killing me, I almost can't even use my phone. PLEASE HELP I REALLY NEED IT!!!!

If you cannot update binaries, that usually means SuperSU cannot access root.
With a root browser (you shouldn't need root to do this though) look in /system/etc/init.d. Look for 99SuperSUDaemon. Also in /system/xbin look for daemonsu and su. Tell me if any of those are missing.

however, SuperSu would pop out at the end and when I check: root access denied: I think the previous root that I did not perform right, is the issue somehow. Is there any way to get rid of it or go around it?

Did you flash a kernel? If you did then download super su from the market and try TiBu again. The error means that TiBu was not given super user permissions. So either you dont have a rooted kernel or you dont have SU installed to grant the requested permissions. OR you have both and just didnt grant SU permissions when asked.

The market has a super user app for managing SU permission requests, you may already have it. It will look like a pound sign "#" and say super user or SU. If you dont have that app you need to download it. The developer is named chainfire.
TiBu is short hand for Titanium Backup
Waouh I am learning a lot from you guys. O, I will be looking for that SU with the # sign. It is definitely not what I currently have.
by this sentence: "OR you have both and just didnt grant SU permissions when asked." : do you mean that the phone may have already been rooted? without SU telling me? because honestly, I dont know whats wrong.

If you already have SU then you would have been prompted to grant super user permission by a pop up dialog. If you mistakenly select deny or wasn't paying attention (it has a time out that will select deny but only temporarily if no user input is selected). If you mistaken selected deny then you would need to open the SU app and remove the TiBu entry, restart TiBu and select allow.. That is only IF you have the Super User (SU) app installed..

Hi, I just realized that I am not done yet. More new issue with the phone. It looks I did not do something right or one of the softwares is not correct: after we rooted the phone yesterday, IO had it unlocked with the help of stilfilz. However, ever since , when I make phone calls, the phone would go off by itself after a while.
Have you heard of previous similar mistakes? If yes, any ideas about how to fix it?
