Manually installing Market app - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I have a branded Galaxy S with no Android market. I've found 3 different Vending.apks, version 1.665, 1.668, 1.713. I tried to install them using adb install. 1.7133 returns "unexpected exception". Other two install successfully but they both crash when click Install an app. When I go back to app page it says Starting download and gets stuck there (Market app is not frozen). Am I missing a step for manually installing market? Do I have to do anything like adb push Vending.apk /system/app/?

Have you tried flashing a gapps.apk?

have you tried using appbrain and their corrosponding apps like their installer?

AFAIK appbrain uses default market app to download. I don't have any market app that's the problem..

I don't know what gapps.apk is. Could you elaborate please?
Do you mean Vending.apk from the gapps-passion-EPE54B-signed.zip of the Cyanogenmod 5?
Btw I'm using:
pad: jvjh1
phone: jxjg2
csc: trcjh2

Did the same vending.apk installation on a HTC legend "Middle East Version" which also came with no Market and no sucess, i do have the same problem..."crashing at installation"
and about gapps, it's not an apk but rather a flashable content that require rooted device and since i don't wanna root this phone i really didn't figure it out so far. so i'm still waiting for a solution.

Ok. The gapps.apk I know of you can find on rom manager. I think you can DL rom manager straight from their website and install using something like astro file manager. Cyanogen can't release a rom with the Google apps for copyright reasons so they offer it as a seperate download. I'm assuming you can find it on the cyanogenmod site. Otherwise try flashing a stock image through rom manager if they have one for the galaxy x. How did it not come with a market?
Hi. I posted a reply for your idea for my problem but got no reply from you, I guess the thread got lost beneath all the other threads. Could you please give me any ideas about this:

run .apk without file manager

I have some issues with a device I bought (coby internet tablet 7015) that have resulted in my being unable to use the android market (I always get a 404 error) or the app that came with it (appslib) I seem unable to install any apps (with .apk) because I do not have a file manager. I'm looking for a way to install apps without one, or maybe one I can install that is not in .apk format!

Go into your browser on the device and find an apk for a file manager, then download it. when it's downloaded you should be able to open it through the browser. Then you can copy over an apk for ME (MarketEnabler) and install it. ME will let you use the market.
I wrote down some options:
1. If you rooted your phone and such you can just use adb from SDK
Code:
adb install [dir/package.apk]
(usb debugging enabled).
2. If you have internet on your device, upload a file manager apk you downloaded from a pc and put it where your phone can download it from with the browser. So when the download on your phone is complete you can click on the finished download in the notification bar and install it the file manager.
3. You can also try appbrain.
Though I think you should first fix the market problem. How about resetting the phone?
You can also use DropBox. Download the .Apk to your computer, pop it in your DropBox folder, open DropBox on your device, tap the Apk, and voila!
technically its not a phone its a "Coby internet tablet" but I get what you mean, and I have actually reset it to factory default's twice with no success.
To the first poster thanks, that did work to enable to to get the file manager but what is market enabler? and any suggestions on where I can find it?
http://code.google.com/p/market-enabler/downloads/detail?name=MarketEnabler_v3.1.1.2.apk
It can fake a provider to get access.
How does it work? Every time I tried it would say "We've got a problem Houston"

try installing the 2.2.6 market from this child forum??
try appbrain. It should let you start a direct download from your PC.
If everything fails then the only thing I can suggest is installing all apps from .apk

He would need root for it to work.
If you do have root, try this http://amip.tools-for.net/wiki/android/marketaccess
It works better than MarketEnabler.
You do have WIFI enabled? And added your google account? Does it have a SIM card?

I'm using baxter rom from Echts but what I think the real solution is that I have edited the build.prop file with the correct values that LG forgot to include on the v21A update.
You can try to use my patch on this thread and see if that works for you.
Don't mind that the thread is saying that it's for skype. Just try it an let me know.

I modified but no help. I got a hint from that post and flash back to Android 2.2 original FW, it work! The apps from market can be download. Only flash to 2.3 is not compatible.
May I ask a stupid question, your baxter FW is a 2.3(GB)?

Yes it is gingerbread. I had a similar problem and what I did was to reinstall a 2.3 ROM. Then all the apps were working again. I recommend you reinstall a GB ROM after a full wipe and see if that works.

It works! I reinstalled 2.3 ROM. May be the acurarom has some bug. Because after I reinstalled 2.3 ROM and baxter, it still no problem. Once I install acurarom after baxter, many apps cannot find in market and incompatible such as "Smile shooter analog clock", "Maid live wallpaper", etc. Sadly, I just a newbie and have not enough permission to ask in development group
Anyway, thanks for your help~
Its an DPI related issue with new market.
Well I am facing same issue on new Market, it doesn't support dpi other than 240. I have no idea why google put dpi check on the new version of the market.
Anyway if any one want to know how to solve it. First you need to revert your dpi to 240 and restart the phone, and then go to manage Application under phone settings, click on market, and clear data after force closing it. Restart the market and Voila!
Cheers!
Edit: On other note download maket enabler from market if you need to install an app that is not available in your country of the market.

I extracted the problem ROM zip file and get the build.prop, it contain this line:"ro.sf.lcd_density=240". I think the dpi should be 240 but still having problem. In another "works" ROM (Baxter), it does not contain this line but it works.

[Q] CM9 my first ROM. Where is Google Maps? I installed GAPP file

After lots of reading through this site and others I successfully rooted and installed CM9 on my Nexus S.
How do I get Google Maps back on my phone? It's my main issue.
After flashing the ROM I immediately flashed the GAPP package. Did something go wrong that prevents me from having Google Maps as well the the Navigator program?
I am ready to try to flash the GAPP package again from Clockwork Mod Recovery.
Can I just use the "Install ROM from SD Card" option in ROM manager to install the GAPP.zip file?
If not I assume I should just boot into recovery and run the GAPP.zip file?
When I installed the ROM I was only able to do so after disabling the signature check as I kept on getting an "e-signature failed" and abortion of the install. Was I correct in moving the check?
Thank you in advance.
..
I have wiped totally clean before the installs and it just seems like Google Maps isn't in the GAPP.zip pack. Everything else is there. Are you suggesting that signature verification would prevent one program like Google Maps from being installed?
I used CWM to install the pack again and same results. Everything there except what I assume are more proprietary apps...Google Maps and the Navigation. I don't know what others Google considers proprietary.
..
Just install it from the market

I downloaded the .zip file you used and still can't seem to find google maps in the .apk files...very strange. As I could have sworn I saw it there earlier.
Does anyone know what is happening or how I can get google maps in working order?! It almost prevented me from scoring a phone number from a good looking spanish woman tonight.
Install it from the market. All the gapps that you can download from the market are not in the zips. Earth, voice, videos, music etc.
If for reason its not in the market on your device use the web version or market enabler.

Which alpha build are you using? Maps should definitely be available in the Market.
..
If someone could direct me to a working APK that would be great.
You have to understand that I am in China, so market-wise google maps isn't available, neither is skype, neither are alot of the VPN programs etc. Or at least I assume its because I'm in China....also browser wise its pretty damn hard to track things down that aren't blocked. Haven't got around to installing a VPN but it would kick ass to get help to get a free vpn up and running too.
Nonetheless I have definitely installed the GAPP.zip file correctly after a good wipe of everything. I am pretty certain it should work since maps.google.com through the browser seems to locate me and load the map ok.

@jesusice Thank you and no Drop Box is not blocked. I was successfully able to download and install the map file. Everything is in proper working order as far as I can tell.
CM9 and ICS = success. It is snappy and have yet to have any issues with the system. Just my abilities!
I am thinking of starting another thread titled: "Why[Not] ICS and WHY [Not] CM9?"

I hear that Market Enabler is what you need. Should allow you to make the Market think you're in a country or on a carrier that does allow the apps you want.

[Q] How to manually install .apk

I've been trying to install a particular app to my phone, Nexus 4, rooted custom rom, etcetc.
The app in question was pulled from the Play store some time ago and it seems Google went further and removed the free version of the app from users devices without permission as well. I have the pro version as did many others and from what I've read, the pro version was not removed. However I flash roms and eventually lost it and that required a reinstall.
The problem: traditional methods of installing the .apk give the error "App not installed."
How can I install this app manually? The only other method I could think of was to try to root copy it to /system/app but that didn't work. And I'll reiterate, so we're clear, browsing to .apk and installing through explorer by clicking it does not allow the .apk to install. So, suggestions?
You could try sideloading it using Android Injector. (If it fails, it'll tell you why)

The application itself says install successful, but the app cannot be found on the phone.
There are a few websites that allows you to download apps in its apk format. You can install that way. But I'm not sure if its legal. Someone could correct me here.
Please hit Thanks if I helped

NB. - It is legal unless the app is warez.

The app isn't warez but it is one of the unapproved apps by google now, I mainly just wanted to look for an alternate method of installing apps in case this kind of app blocking became more prevalent. You have to admit, Google did a real number on blocking this app. Thanks for the help anyway guys.
the command that worked for me was:
adb install app.apk
You can make a folder in /system/app with its name without space as folder name and copy the apk to that folder.
Apk name should be same as the folder name +.apk.
Then reboot your device.
After reboot the app will be definitely installed as a system app. But some apps might be stable but some not.
