Some Captivates Unable to Use Three Button Recovery - Captivate General

It appears that some newer Captivates being sold suffer from not being able to reboot into download or recovery mode using the three button (VOL UP + VOL DOWN and PWR) combination. These phones will not respond to these key combinations. If you have one of these phones, you have a significantly higher risk of bricking your phone irreversibly since you cannot three button reboot into download mode from a failed flash.
The first two Captivates I used did not have this problem. The two Captivates I got this week both DO have this problem. Others who have purchased their Captivate recently (in the past week) have discovered this problem as well. This indicates it may be more common in newer Captivates.
A number of Galaxy S I9000 have experienced this problem and they have put pressure on Samsung Canada via Facebook to fix the problem. For those affected, I suggest we do the same for our Captivates:

Asked and answered my own question. Relevant information condensed into the post above.

Pretty sure you can still do it... try this
shut down your phone, plug in the usb cable and wait for the battery to come up, then do the key combo.

I call user error. How and why stop key combos? I wouldnt think it would happen.

I've went through 2 cap's also, both cannot do it. I have to use ADB to kick into recovery. Also, in the SRE thread another user had the same issue. All bought within the last week..

Thanks for the heads up. I was planning on swapping mine out because it isn't consistently detecting my SIM card; looks like I should wait for a bit and see if this is a temporary issue.

I swapped mine so its the so called newer one. And i can still use the buttons just fine. Even tried with another one today and still worked fine. So i dunno.

To clearify some issues. Power off. Hold power and BOTH volume buttons down. Thats the key here. Once the att screen comes on wait. Dont do anything. The screen turns off. THEN the screen comes back on. Thats right twice. THEN release the power button. ONLY the power button and continue holding the volume up AND down. You will see recovery menu.

thats exactly how we are doing it. its the download that is having issues though, not recovery. thats holding both vols, pluggin in USB. it should go to Download mode, but it doesnt.

Ok just tested. Same thing with usb plugged in takes you to download.

Make sure odin is up and running. And usb is plugged in when u power off. Not sure if its needed but thats how i tested it.

Worked fine here plugging in a usb after powed off.

If this does not work for you please post a system dump. Or pm me for more help. Kinda wonder why so many users have these issues :-(

I was having these problems as well.. When I first got that phone I tried to boot it into recovery mode, and it wouldn't work.. THe only way I was able to get it into recovery mode was through quick boot.
So while I was flashing the SRE v 1.2.2a somehow it got stuck in a loop of installing the files over and over..
I tried putting the phone into download mode via every button combination people suggested.. I literally am not exaggerating that I spent 4 hours trying over and over..
Today i sent it back rma.

Take your phone back if 3 button recovery mode does not work

Here is my suggestion. Take your phone back if it does not do the 3 button recovery mode. Otherwise you will sooner or later brick it and not be able to recover:cool. Take it from someone who has bricked one that could not do the 3 button recovery mode. I lucked out and got a new phone that does do the 3 button rec now LOL. Test the phone in the store to ensure it can go into recovery mode.

Did this for about 2 hours on both devices. No joy. If you follow the links I posted in the first post, you'll see that a number of I9000 devices have this problem and now a couple of ours do as well. It has to do with the way they are flashed from the factory.
I can certify (unless I have gone completely mental) than I am doing it the right way. I had two Captivates before this that I could put into download and recovery easily using the vol up + vol down + pwr combo. The last two, no way. Also cannot do the vol up + vol down then plug in USB with ODIN running and ready to get out of brick mode (i.e. computer -!- phone). Which means once bricked, always bricked.
I've attached build info for the device. JF6, built 8.11.2010, hardware is REV0.4.

ok so I am basically screwed then. I just called AT&T and they wont warranty the device. Do I have to call samsung? I got that number: 18889874357.
AT&T didnt even know what a recovery mode was, they wanted to walk me through the factory reset on the phone itself.
Has this issue been confirmed with Samsung?

Called Samsung this morning- actually just got off the line. I spoke to about 3 people, then finally got to level 3 support. They stepped me through the same steps I have read everywhere- the 3 button reset. He actually had me try it a few different ways too. After a second, he put me on hold to see if there is some other way to put the phone into recovery or download mode, but after 5 minutes he came back and had no good news. He had a couple things he googled but they didnt work- of course. He basically resolved the call with "I don't know what to do..." So I then asked if this is an RMA'able problem and he said he didnt think so since the phone functions fine but put me on hold again for another 5 minutes. Finally he came back and said he can setup an RMA to do a factory reflash. It is a 2day air to send it to them, then a flashing, and a 2day back. Should take about a week or so. He suggested I maybe go to AT&T and possibly get it replaced that way first so I will head over to corporate this evening. If that doesnt work then I'm sending it off to Samsung...

I had much difficulty getting into recovery. But it turned out to be a matter of timing. Using the usb cable plugged in seems to change the criteria and made it easier to get into recovery.
What I do now. Phone is off. Wait at least 10 sec after shutdown to ensure it is fully off. In low light you may see a small amount of light coming from the screen then it goes black.
Press both volumes then the power button and hold till the att screen pops up. After att screen is on (the initial screen not the animation) for one or two second. Release power then volume quickly. If that doesn't work try it as design gears describes with the usb cable.

Tried umpteenth different timings. Now that I have one of my original Captivates back, the difference is clear. I can get it into recovery/download 100% of the time. On both the new ones, 0% -- as in never. It's gonna be a fun conversation at the AT&T store trying to tell them that:
1. The phone is broken because I can't get it to switch into a mode mainly reserved for engineers.
2. I will test the replacement they give me for the same problem and return it if doesn't work.
3. Repeat step 2 until I find one that works.

[q] help! My phone wont do anything!

hey guys,
my phone litteraly wont do anything. i f*ed up some fonts using type fresh, then tried to restore using the odin3 downloader. i accidentally closed it, and now my phone wont boot up/react to any buttons pressed. any help? thanks guys!
had the same problem. i cant figure out how to even get odin working, it says one click but when i hook up it to odin it gives me a message that still doesnt tell me ****. i had to send my phone back for a new one and told them i used easyroot on the market bc i didnt know what it was and it sounded cool but now i know not to ever do that again that it messd up my phone. Praying to god that they dont charge my for anything
You should still be able to enter bootloader mode by turning phone off and holding down up/down vol and pwr simultaneously until boot screen flashes then release power button only
it wont even do that
open odin (use the stock one click version)
with the phone off (remove/reinsert the battery if need be) and not plugged in; hold vol. down and insert the usb cable (keep holding vol. down untill you see the download screen). this should put you into download mode and if you have the right drivers odin should recognize the phone.
I've stuffed my captivate on a few occasions and so far I have been able to use this method to get into download mode and fix it.
it wont do anything at all. it wont power on, show up in adb, anything... and stupid att wont do ANYTHING -_- oh well. any help would be appreciated!
Have any of you offering support to the OP actually had your phone in the described state? I've read a few posts where the phone is seemingly completely dead as the OP describes and no one says they've successfully recovered from that state. All I ever see is the same old button combinations/battery/usb shenanigans and statements of that should work and that the phone is unbrickable. I have personally seen a device that was behaving in such a manner and no combination of battery pulling, usb plugging, button holding, or tongue twisting would generate anything from the phone. The only thing the phone would do was get hot.
same here. Phone showed bright green screen...wasnt done with teh flash and said it was finished...now the nly thing I can get is power and hold the vlume up for some IRQ and hex stuff. I posted a questionthis morning but...serious. Vol up and down and any things else gives nothign but a black screen..battery out...back in anything..its torched.

Did you read the rest of the posts? The OP already stated several times that the phone does nothing. I realize that most people will say it does nothing or is "bricked" if it simply shows the "connect to computer" screen, but the OP has stated more than once that the phone shows nothing. Yes, everyone is trying to help, but simply repeating what has been said numerous times before doesn't help.
Has anyone actually recovered a phone that displays NOTHING? No logos, no recovery, no nothing.
Last night, i turned off the light in my room when i noticed a glowing from my desk. i walked over, and it turns out my captivate's screen was in fact on, it was just a faint black glow, and none of the power buttons would do anything. when i took the battery out, it shut off completely!
As I pointed out here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=757293
Im pretty sure it was my fault for not completely following instructions on the ext4 one click install root, settings.db etc so everyone needs to make sure if the dev says flash before..do it.
State of the phone was, it would not completely power on..therefor no usb drivers would load and Odin cannot see the phone and it can no longer flash..the only thing I could get it to do was show a screen with that text. I put in my post. I ordered it via letstalk.com so I sent it back and assuming they get the same result Ill have a new one hopefully by the end of the week. Im just glad I stil had my old iphone3 to slap my sim card in.
The odin one click flash thing..it just flaked right at the start it looked like..but I cant be sure because as soon as I saw a blue progress bar I stepped into the kitchen for abtou 30 sec..I came back and the screen was florescent green and Odin said it was done. I knew something was wrong as it was way too fast so I unplugged, removed the battery and set it back in...from there on out it would do nothing with the power button unless on a semi rare occasion if I hit the volume up button and power I got the IRQ stuff.
Annoying as I had a nandroid backup just before I started messing with it.
i just sent mine into samsung... back to mah ol trusty blackjack. gonna have to get used to supermario bros 3 instead of spyro....
ANYWAYS theyre sending me a new one!

Hey thanks, but i already sent it to em... thank you everyone for your help!
Just a note... i said before hold vol down and plug in usb. I had it in a pretty bad state tonight. Played around. Same idea as before, but had to hold vol up and vol down. If i brick a few more times, i'll give a better guide. But this phone can DEFINITELY come back from a state where you can't even get it to power on. Figured any additional info on this would be good.

Captivate repaired - GPS/combos/etc findings

I recently sent my captivate to Samsung for repair. I sent it for the random shutdown problem. I wasn't actually seeing the problem, but the phone was in the group which supposedly has the problem and since my GPS was less than good I thought I'd go ahead and send it in.
When I got the phone back it was loaded with JH7. The first thing I did upon booting was to enter the unlock code I had saved from when I first got the phone. That worked. After rooting, I dumped /dev/block/bml3 and found that my old unlock and freeze codes were visible there as well. Then I backed up /efs and some /dev/block/*'s and powered off to check my button combos.
Volume buttons + power did not get me into recovery (I didn't try the download mode combo because I assumed it wouldn't work either). I flashed a new sbl.bin which enabled my recovery button combo and then just for gits and shiggles I flashed back to JF6 using the one-click flasher. Interestingly, although my recovery mode combo was wiped out as expected after the one-click JF6 flash, I still could initiate download mode using the volume rocker + USB, so it seems like I now have a permanent download mode combo, but not recovery.
<shrug> Maybe I have a locked/checksumed first boot loader now or something.
GPS
All driving tests were done using Copilot.
These obviously aren't good comparative before and after or modem vs. modem tests since I didn't do the same tests with different modems, nor did I test all modems before and after. I'm throwing in what I found using JL2 and JL3, but the main point is my KP1 experience.
I didn't really test the GPS with the JH7 firmware the phone came back with. I did try it after reverting to JF6 and it seemed as craptivatey as ever.
JL2 was slow to lock before and after the repair. I never tested tracking with JL2 (I don't really care how accurate it tracks if it takes 10 minutes to lock).
JL3 locked fast before and after the repair. Tracking prior to sending the phone in was sometimes good, but it could be horrible in areas where parallel streets were close together. Tracking my starts, stops and turns was very good so long as the streets weren't tightly packed. I haven't tested JL3 tracking since getting the phone back and I probably won't unless I find something wrong with KP1.
KP1 wasn't tested before sending the phone in (it wasn't available). Lock speed with KP1 is very fast (generally a matter of seconds). I drove though 2 areas which have pretty much always given everything else trouble tracking and it was perfect. I also tested walking and using the satellite imagery overlay in My Tracks and my postition appeared to be spot-on. I walked toward a double track trail, stopping in the center and my position shown on the satellite image looked to be within a couple of feet.

TESTING DOWNLOAD MODE
i bought my first captivate on ebay it hasen't arrived yet but i noticed after the fact that it is a 1008 (in the photo of the imei) i've since been full of panic because of the possible lack of button combos. i'm eased by the 3 button fix and now the one click to stock with fix. so i don't feel so afraid now. but i want to check it SAFELY..... i did search and found that in recovery you can select reboot but in download it says do not turn off target. so seeing that some of the worst brick situations are from interupting download mode , i felt the need to cofirm a safe way to exit download mode when testing.
a little paranoid maybe but all i've read here shows me you can't be too careful. thanks......
Why repair and not just get an exchange?
just guessing but 30 day return, 1 year warranty repair...??
They exchanged mine for the shut down issue and I was way past the 30 day return window.Did it through AT&T, not samsung.

All you are doing is rebooting multiple times due to your holding the power button. Try this if you have trouble getting the timing right: hold the three buttons until you see the AT&T logo, then release only the power button. Keep the volume buttons pressed until the recovery menu appears.

Constant boot loop - can't even get download mode

I have a rooted stock phone that stopped working for no apparent reason (no new ROM flashed, no configuration change). It starts, shows the Samsung logo, and immediately reboots. I tried to put it in download mode, when i hold the 3 keys I see the download logo showing up, but it reboots after a few seconds anyway. after a while it will start looping through the battery charge screen (which shows the battery as empty). I tried 2 different batteries with no change. Any idea how to get something working again?
That almost sounds like some sort of power issue. Have you left it sit turned off until the battery was full?
Yes, I left it overnight and it just keeps flashing the battery screen and then resets. I also have an external charger and used it to charge the battery, so it's not an issue with the battery actually being empty.
Have you been able to get the phone into download mode previously?
Have you have dealt with a boot loop and performed an Odin recovery previously? If not, remember it can take a few tries to get download mode to pop up.
If you can't get Odin to go, you might try flashing with Kies.
I am wondering if your phone met with some kind of disaster when you weren't around (trauma or liquid).

This sounds almost exactly like the problem I had with my Sidekick. In my case, it turned out to be a bad battery and a loose ribbon cable on the motherboard. I'd check those two things.
This happened to me as well, and the three-button method to get into download mode wasn't working. For some odd reason, for me to get into download mode all I have to do is hold down the power button + track pad, and it goes right into download mode... Maybe slightly different model?
Try that - power button + trackpad
Bootloops.
Not a guaranteed fix by any means but for troubleshooting purposes you may want to consider making a USB JIG. It will most definitely help you figure out just how serious the problem is and if it IS software related with a way to get it working again you will need the JIG anyway so its worth a shot. If nothing else you learn a new skill and you're the proud owner of an incredibly useful tool that you can say you made yourself. good luck!
I know this post is kind of old, but it just happened to me last week (same circumstance, a rooted phone, but stock). I ended up just pulling the battery out and pressing the power button a couple times to hopefully drian it and letting it sit for 15 minutes, and then I put the battery back in and it worked again. I now have another rom flashed on it, I hate stock.
I know this forum is ancient, but I'm working on an E-Bay phone with this exact issue. I found the following thread the most useful and informative on the problem:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1996709
Hopefully this helps other.
what i did was hold the power volume and button between the menu n back with the left hand YES HOLD IT UNTILL THE PIT IS UPLOADED. then u can let go then slide in the vattery with the right.while checking off the flash bootloarders on the heimdall with it fixing my phone XD
I had this happen, I dissassembled the phone, and used an alcohol pad to clean the power button area, and manipulated the button a lot, let it dry, reassembled...it still bootlooped.
BELOW IS RISKY BUT WORKED FOR ME
So while the back cover was off (exposing the cicuit board but everything still connected) I inserted the battery and watched it boot loop...during this, I used a flathead screw driver to "short" the power button pins...this let it boot fully, and it has been fine since.
i smacked the phones power button a few times and it worked

VZW Galaxy S6 won't turn on

Got a perculiar problem with the S6. The screen suddenly went black with just the blue LED blinking in the upper left hand corner of the sreen. I am assuming the phone went off completely as I cannot access it via the PC also. I have tried all possible button combinations for reset but no luck so far.
Anyone else experience this? Did you find a fix?
Sent from my SM-G920V using XDA Free mobile app
Well the phone is not off if the blue led light is blinking, I've never had it happen to me where the phone didn't come back though. I was using an app one day (YouTube I think) and the app crashed and bugged the phone out to where the screen went black but the led was blinking. I left the phone alone after several attempts of hitting home and power to get the screen to come back on and finally I think I plugged it into the charger and it kind of just fixed it self and has not happened again. This is the scary parts of not having a removable battery.

I've got the 128GB and yes I have experienced this as well, twice! I hold down both volume buttons the home button and the power button at the same time, this will put you in maintenance mode. It'll take a couple of seconds holding those buttons but just keep them pressed. Be careful because when it does come on it comes on fast and factory reset is the second selection in that mode. The first time I did it I wiped my phone, the second time it happened I lifted my fingers fast enough not to make a selection. Give that a try and see what happens.

Sounds like you have the same problem as stated in OP. You could try doing what was recommended earlier in the thread. By the way, this is an inappropriate location to put your problem. Read the forum rules
Never rooted.
I am having the same issue. I have tried everything. Factory reset. Reboot/wiped cache and even trying to install verizon's Fireware again as it come only up to the Samsung S6 logo then goes blank. This is now my 4th replacement with Verizon and getting sick of it. How do I fix this? Odin stops at Get Pit mapping then when I do that says it can not install NAND. Using Odin 3.10.6 and 3.10.7. Tried mutli cables and restarted computer as well. This is driving me insane these phones keep doing this.
same problem except nothing comes on. no led, no reset, no computer recognition...
Same issue. Boots into and displays recovery fine and download mode. I can also bring up the safe mode menu ... just can't boot into the OS. Blue light on. I get a response in ADB when powered on, just can't enter any commands due to not being able to authorize access via phone screen.
Update:
Well as strange as it sounds, as soon as I plopped it down on the wireless charger for my S7 the screen came to life. It was at 95% battery prior to. Whatever gremlins got into the gizmos within the wireless charging apparatus seems to have caused this strange occurrence.

S7 maybe fullbricked

Hi,
i update my Galaxy S7 today with the new DBT-Firmware. I follow a Tutorial in which you can update a rooted Phone with flashify it without loss any data. Also the TWRP works still great after this. I did this with the last Firmware few weeks ago and it works great.
Today it works great also, everything was perfect. Than a last step: I flash the the bootloader seperately in odin. i did this the last time too and it works well. but not at this time.
After Bootloader flash, the device stays in the first Screen with Samsung Logo, i cannot go to Download Mode or Recovery. I tried a USB-Jig, but it changes nothing. The only thing you can do now is, to make a Reset with Power+Volume Down. Than the screen goes black for a second and it shows the Samsung Logo Screen again.
bad thing is: I cant turn off the device!
i remove the SIM and the SD-Card, but no reaction.
Anybody an idea? The battery was half loaded, so maybe it takes a while, before it will shutdown itself.
Mhhh, that's a bad day, i fear. But iam an Idiot, it was the Bootloader-Flash at the end, before that everything was perfect.
Maybe anybody can help me, that were great.

No. Iam holding it about a Minute, a few times, nothing happends.
Iam still at the first screen with the logo.
There is a hacky method to remove the back and get to the battery
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1naej9BnfM
But it will no longer be waterproof
I can't think of any way to power off the phone if holding power does nothing
Have you tried resetting it with the USB Jig inserted?

Yes, i tried that too. with and without I just can turn off this thing off.
thanks for the link, but i think before i remove the backcover, i better will bring it to repair first. i got an official samsung repair center in my town.
by the way: it was the bootloader from the latest official firmware (G930FXXU1BPH6, DBT-Version).
i cannot explain to myself, what happend i done all this a few weeks ago with the last firmware without any problems.

i will now wait, until it shuts down itself, maybe that took a few hours.
if i can charge it, maybe i can than go into the downloadmode.
If you had 50% battery left, and it's just sitting on the Samsung logo, it might take days to run out
50% battery on idle with the phone booted into Android will last a day or two on its own, just on the logo is like ultra power saving mode

Found this, try holding power and volume down & up together for safe mode (Might not work if it's stuck on the logo, but worth a try)
---
Okay. This morning my S7 would not turn off, its not the edge, but basically the same phone.
You must hold down the power, the volume up and down all at the same time for about 15 seconds. (All 3 buttons).
It will go into safe mode. In the safe mode screen hit the volume button down a few times until it moves to restart.
Click the power button, as "enter" and the phone will restart.
It did a restart and I tried again to turn it off and this time, it did work. I will keep you all updated if I have any more issues.

Does Smart Switch see it?
All this is unlikely due to where it is stuck, at the logo, you shouldn't have been able to kill download mode is the thing, that is part of the hardware, nothing to do with the ROM, you 'should' always be able to enter download mode if you hold Volume Down & Home & Power at boot, not sure why it's freezing at the logo before that point
With the S5 there was an unbrick image you flashed to a MicroSD card, put that in the phone, and that took you to download mode where you could recover the phone
See if there is the same thing for the S7, I'm not sure
ok, after the phone shut down itself, i was able to go to the download mode. but only on first try. when it boots normally, it stuck again on that logo an i must wait again until it goes off itself.
flash it than in download mode with latest firmware in odin with 4 parts. power from the usb was enough to stay it on.
now it seems ok, back on latest firmware.
what a hell of an evenig, need a beer right now
You can switch your phone off with the 3 key pressing and holding (vol+, vol-, power) but your phone needs to be connected to power otherwise it will reboot.

yes, iam happy now, seems to work fine.
i think it was because the new bootloader don't work with the twrp version that was installed.
on the twrp page there is a new version especially for this firmware. it was published yesterday and i didn't see it.
so i think, after flash the new bootloader over the old twrp it chrashed the whole system.

Well if you do it again, make sure your battery is low first in case you have to wait again
Any reason you needed to flash the bootloader over the one that was already there?

yes, better i will do so in the future.
an no, there's no reason to replace the bootloader, i only did it to make the whole flash "complete".
a bad mistake, that brought me in sweating. i will learn from that experience.
I exactly have the same problem.
How'd you managed to power it off? just waiting?
'ich könnt kotzen'
