APK to Bypass Exchange Security Policy - Hero CDMA Themes and Apps

Okay, so I found this on the EVO forums, and thought it would be helpful on the Hero CM6 nightlies because (a) currently, Email.apk FCs constantly on the nightlies, and (b) the new PIN/password security policy for Exchange setup is pretty damn annoying. Pushing this apk to /system/app will overwrite the previous Email setup with one that performs all of the same functions, but does not require a PIN or password for Exchange Autosync.
All credit goes to afflaq ... like I said, grabbed it from the EVO forums, and just posting it here. I have been running it on the last few nightlies, and works just as promised. Just push through adb as such ...
adb remount
adb push Email.apk /system/app
Hope this helps!

Just used it and it works great! Thanks!

This worked perfectly. Thanks. Just a heads up, it'll wipe your activesync account. Not a big deal though.

Having Issues Updating Apps from Market?

I know that I'm starting this thread in the wrong forum but I'm hoping to build a little bit more awareness among developers to see if there is a way to fix this issue.
A lot of people (even with stock) phone's are having issues going into the "My Downloads" folder in the Market and not seeing available updates for applications. I am not sure if this is something that even developers can fix or if Google needs to fix it, then we can send mass complaints to get it fixed, hehe.
It's not a huge issue, but an issue nonetheless. I hope this thread stays open for at least for a few days to direct more people to the existing thread in "Dream" forum.
Thanks in advance to everyone.
:::EDIT:::
Just wanted to let everyone know, as I am sure you've all have already noticed, that the issue mentioned above has been resolved by Google. I am not sure exactly what the initial issue was, I just want to thank everyone on their feedback during that time.
Mods, this thread is now free to close.
Use "atrackdog" app it does the update search for you!!
Glad it isn't only me who has had this problem..
Ditto. Annoying much - yes.
What's killing me is that DxTOP for one is not working with my setup (CyanoMod 3.2, Hero 1.3.5 theme, apps2sd)
But the thing that is the worst is the Market shows the available download for me as 1.0.9 when it should be 1.6.11 and the file size is 293k when it should be ~470k

I had a similar issue with a game I had purchased called Robo Defense. Oddly enough I think it was related to me not wiping before flashing. All I did was wipe and reflashed the ROM and it worked.
I have this same issue since upgraded google map app to 3.1.1 .

You've got a paid app in the Market, Bratag (a very good one at that, Snap Photo PRO, buy it people). Doesn't google give you some sorta correspondence method so you can try and find out what's going on? I mean AtrackDog's great, but time consuming. Thanks if you try.
EDIT: Maybe this is my sinister way of trying to get a Snap Photo PRO update....not that I need one.
EDIT2: Seems I got my update (through AtrackDog of course). Sweet zooooom!! Thanks, Bratag!
At the risk of being a me too
Another user with this happening over here. Most of the time I "accidently" run across an update. Things seem to be a bit funky with the Market. Perhaps soon Google will HAVE to update it.
Yea same here so far I noticed 3 apps that had updates available but it didn't show in My Downloads so now I'm just using atrackdog until this issue is fixed, I'm wondering if this has anything to do with the ROM I'm using because I don't think I remember this happening before CyanogenMod 3.4.6.

I really don't think it's a build issue. Google's got something screwy going on.
Hi,
I've found a way to solve the market issues and missing updates issue.
I'm running CyanogenMod-3.5.2.
These are the steps I recall I've done to fix the problem:
1) Open the Terminal and:
Code:
su
cd /data/system
mv packages.xml packages.xml.old
2) turn off and restart the phone,
packages.xml will be recreated
this can take a little time so be patient.
3) you have to enter your gmail account info again.
and some apps could forceclose.
4) turn off and turn on again.
5) I've run also the fix_permission script in the Terminal,
but maybe it is not necessary, so you can try to skip this step:
Code:
su
/system/bin/fix_permissions
6) run the Market app and you'll see Update available in My downloads,
if there are some updates for your apps, downloading and installing also
works again. (Sadly only initially then the problem of missing updates was there again)
7) You can delete packages.xml.old now if you want:
Code:
cd /data/system
su
rm packages.xml.old
That's it.
So far I've not noticed any malfunctioning, all my settings were retained
and all apps seem to work. Hope that I've not forgotten any important step,
(oops, I did..... ) so USE THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Update:
Sadly the issues seemed to be fixed only initially in the sense that some Update available were shown in My downloads. It fixed downloading from the Market tough.
+1
I hope this issue gets fixed soon.

Has anyone else been able to test this out yet? I am at work so I will not be able to test it until I get home. Please if anyone tests this and finds that it's working as well then we have a fix.
I tested it. Didnt have a great deal of success. Had to roll back to old package.xml. YMMV
A Little Good News
Checked "My Downloads" in the Market this morning, and at the top of the list was an "Update Available" for Pic Say Pro. I had not gotten that from the Market in about a week. No notification, however. Still, AtrackDog reports 5 updates available including that one so it's still not functioning properly.

You know what, you may have hit the nail on the head. If I recall, I think I started having this same issue right about the time I upgraded my Google Maps application.
Is there anyone on this forum that may not have upgraded their Google Maps application, and can you confirm if you are still getting updates through My Downloads?

i opened terminal emulator and tried the first step and right away it told me FAILED PERMISSIONS PACKAGES XML ACCESS DENIED
second step said to reboot so i assumed to do this while still inside the os. should i rebooted into recovery console and start from there...?
Good thinking on the Maps update. That's right about the time it started. Ironically (I'm sure you've seen) AtrackDog (AD from now on) reports a new version of maps, which is not available when you view it from the market. I'm sure there's a Google code page to check somewhere, though.
It's not google maps. I have the old version and still have new app versions not showing. Got to be a google server issue. The way the market is (overcrowded)... a better way of organizing apps is needed and seems to be on the way. My guess is on the next rc update. May have to wait until then for the my downloads fix too

[FIX] Exchange Sync on Froyo FRF91

Firstly I take no responsibility for issues caused by this "fix". A nandroid backup is always recommended. It has been tested with MCR r4 WIP and Exchange 2010, no other roms have been tested.
Since FRF91 2.2 has been released a number of people have had difficulty connecting HTC Mail/Stock Email to Exchange Active-Sync. Like a number of organisations using Exchange we have the security options set to "accept client certificates". It seems since FRF91 has been released this setting stops phones without certificates from connecting with a username & password.
The fix is a new libnativehelper.so installed in /system/lib I personally have no idea what the file does or doesn't do, it appears that its been built from source in order to fix this problem!
All credits to grennis. If you wish to read further into the fixes technical details, see here.
How to install attached zip (this is not an update zip):
1. Extract the zip someplace handy
2. Boot your phone into your preferred recovery
3. Run 'adb shell' (this gives you a shell on the phone)
4. Run 'mount /system' (allows writes to the system volume)
5. Run 'cd /system/lib' (enter the system lib directory)
6. Run 'cp libnativehelper.so libnativehelper.so.orig' (make a backup of the original file)
7. Close the ADB shell
8. On your PC, run 'adb push libnativehelper.so /system/lib' (copies the patched file to the phone). This should return a message similar to '1138 KB/s (202976 bytes in 0.174s)'.
9. Reboot the phone
Finally if someone wishes to provide an update zip I will be more than happy to add it to the original post. I however don't have the tools here right now.
Great job! Does this fix also sorts the "This server requires security features your phone does not have" issue? (that enables the pin code for exchange policy)

Gingerbread email.apk?

Can someone with the technical know-how post a link to some of the gingerbread apps.
In particular, I am interested in the email app.
thanks,
bob
At least the 2.3 email.apk is (ALSO) missing the > Next and < Previous buttons!
like many other email.apk 's.
If you install the Android SDK you can install Gingerbread (2.3) yourself very easy and start an Android Virtual Device, a full graphical emulation of an Android device running the latest software. Very nice to see and test, and functionality is excellent.

I also would like the new email.apk but for a more specific reason... it includes EAS (exchange activesync) functionalities that allow 2.3 gingerbread to connect to an exchange 2010 server that has applied the SP1 service pack.
as of yet, the email.apk included up to 2.2 has not worked with the new EAS features. I loaded up an emulator and have verified that gingerbread email.apk DOES in fact work with our exchange server, but I don't know how to pull this specific email.apk
I used to use ES file explorer to pull apks but on gingerbread ES file explorer FC's.
someone link it and you'll be my hee-row

I haven't had a chance to test this in any other Exchange environments, but I did manage to get my Droid on 2.2 (no, not 2.2.1, so the Exchange fixes had not yet gone into place) our Exchange 2010 (SP1) without having to modify or replace my email.apk. I simply had to go to Settings > Location & Security > Set up screen lock > PIN and enforce a 7-digit pin to unlock my Droid. I was then able to setup my mail profile. Once it was setup, I disabled the PIN requirement, and everything still worked fine.
I work in IT, and I know our sysadmins pretty well. They were actively working on getting Android devices on Exchange 2010 at the time, so they may have put in a fix that made my own fix a pure coincidence. Still, the problem with older email.apk apps not working seems to be directly related to policy requirements on Exchange 2010 that didn't exist in previous versions of Exchange. My theory is that the new policy checks for certain security settings and that enforcing a PIN to unlock the phone somehow satisfies this policy requirement.
As I said, this may not work for you, and it may be a coincidence on my part. I'm quite curious if this fix works for you so I can advertise this to our end users when we migrate the rest of our faculty and staff (I work at a university) to Exchange 2010.

Ubuntu runs great on Mesmerize!

(Ergh. Link won't come through since I'm new. The tutorial to install Ubuntu on the Nexus One on the nexusonehacks website is the one i'm referring to)
Following this tutorial, Ubuntu installed perfectly on my Mez. No problems whatsoever! Just need to root the phone (I rooted with z4root if it matters).
Couldn't find any info on the MezBuntu combo, so I figured I'd post my experience with it here.. if it's already been known, sorry. Haha!

I've spent a lot of time this evening getting some stuff added into this and tweaked tonight. I'm going to keep working a little more on this and then host my own copy so people don't have to jump through so many hoops to use it.
I can't post the link since I have less than 8 posts.. anyways, msullivan, I had no trouble with it at all. Didn't have to do any changes whatsoever. If you mean making it less complicated, then ignore me. Haha
Do you need adb to do it or can I just do it through android terminal?
Using my computers a pain lol
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I'm assuming you need ADB, but it might work through the terminal.. I did it through ADB and had no problems whatsoever so I'd do it ADB just to be safe.
You don't need ADB, you can do most of it through a terminal emulator app. First enable WiFi and find out the WiFi IP address. Follow all the guide steps until you get to the part about finally seeing "[email protected]:/#"
Then issue the commands:
Code:
apt-get update
apt-get install openssh-server nano
service ssh start
passwd root
After that last command you'll be asked to set a password for the root account, do something simple to type on the android keyboard, like 'qwerty'.
Now go to a computer and SSH into your phone via PuTTY or whatever your favorite SSH client app is. Now it will be WAY easier to install things via apt, get the GUI running from the howto guide, etc etc. Also then you'll have a real file editor (nano) to work inside of, so you can edit the config files (such as 'bashrc' without having to do very complicated cat commands. This is how I performed my setup and it worked flawlessly. Note that if you set it up to create a VNC session for you automatically in the bashrc, you'll really feel the slowdown. In my tweaked version (which, like I said, I'll release on here soon), I have created a simple prompt on login that asks if you want to create a VNC session or not. That way if you are just there for command-line you don't have to eat the phone's RAM away.

A woot sale is not "new lower prices". That said, I'm in for one, and also looking for the hacking I hope is already going on this!
Checking in too, I got mine yesterday and am very excited about the device.
What I was able to establish quickly is that most 2.2 apps will work out of the box on the Pocket Edge (I made apk backups of my apps on my N1, copied them onto the SD card of the Pocket Edge and voila, I had most of my favorite apps
I would be specifically interested in knowing how to access the e-ink screen programatically. Seems that the current apps focus mostly on the LCD screen.
Did you try sideloading the market? What about amazon market? You didn't order yours off woot and have it arrive so fast, did you?
Sorry, I'm just really curious to see how this thing works out.
Anyone who has one already willing to do a system dump? Is it even possible?
I also Wooted and am waiting on my new toy to arrive.
I just got my PE through a dutch version of woot, I upgraded it to 2.2.1 right away, but there's still plenty to tweak. I have no experience whatsoever with those things, but I'm very willing to learn and help you out, just tell me what to do.

I am not quite sure what to do. I believe it's an adb pull. I meant to do a little more research but have been really busy with work.
Anyone have more knowledge about this?
They have an open development forum on the entourage website that may have useful information for someone wanting to hack this device (I got one on woot too.)
I can't link outside the site since this is my first post, but it's the Open Edge Community Forum at the very bottom of the forum page.
To save a google or two, it's http://www.entourageedge.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?19-Open-eDGe-Community
I got mine (from Woot!) yesterday. I applied the update. I have signed up for the betas, but not installed the beta OS yet.
I plugged in a USB keyboard and it worked well. I did the same with a mouse, though the X and Y axes seem swapped; maybe it only works with a particular screen orientation. I have a Bluetooth keyboard that I will try next.
The included apps aren't great, but they could be worse. I copied some .apk files from my rooted HTC Aria just to see what would install.
Apps that installed and worked:
1) Titanium Backup (the free one). Doesn't do much since I don't have root.
2) Google Maps - everything but the location-based services seems to work.
3) RealCalc - looks freaky on the huge screen
4) Google Listen - though it's broken because it needs a GMail link
5) SystemPanelLite
Apps that would not install:
1) GMail
2) Winamp (I don't like the eDGe's music player)
Looking forward to getting Market and Gmail working one day!
My WPE (Woot Pocket Edge) came today and is slowly charging up. I see two root methods out there, one on AndroidPolice using ADB and one on mobileread using z4root. Anybody have a favorite or comments?
-- Ed
I'm not very good with adb so I think I'll check z4root. Do you have a link?
I got mine today and have been playing for a couple hours. Updated to Ermine. Installed a few apps from the Amazon app store and also copied over a few from my phone.
Everything worked except for Gmail and Google Reader.

HOw? I've owned one of these for almost a year now???
I've played a bit with rooting it already with Ermine and installed the CM6.1 version of Gapps HDPI manually, rebooted. I can't seem to get it to let me add an account. I get the horrible "Can't establish a reliable data connection" error and am stuck at that point
I've read lots of posts about people having trouble adding a google account via wifi and am wondering if something needs to be changed to make it work. I had tried a mock location w/ "My Fake Location" with no luck so far.
Just rooted mine. It was super easy. I downloaded the z4root app from the Amazon App Store and clicked Permanent Root. Et voila!
Now to install AdFree Android and Ti Backup. They make Android life so much easier.

Instructions for Installing G-mail/Calendar
I also got the sucker from Woot. I'm pretty happy with it at the moment. Definitely worth $150!
I'm currently in the process of trying to get gapps to work. At the moment, I have a functional copy of gmail and the calendar, but I'm still having trouble with the market. I'm posting this in the hope that I can help push forward the process and someone more knowledgeable will figure out how to get the market to work.
Anyway, here's the process.
(1) Root your device. You just need to download z4root from the Amazon marketplace and select the "permanent root" option.
(2) Download the Google *.apk files. While you can get these from several places, I took them from the CyanogenMod wiki. Unfortunately, I'm a new user and can't post links. Therefore, you need to (A) Google CyanogenMod Wiki, (B) click on "Latest Version," (C) scroll down to the bottom of the page, (D) download the HDPI files under the CyanogenMod 6 section.
(3) Transfer the *.apk files to your Pocket Edge via USB.
(4) Install the *.apk files with the preloaded ES File Explorer. This part is a little tricky, primarily because the different gapps are intimately related and draw on similar resources. Therefore, you need to install quite a few of them to get gmail/calendar to work. From what I can tell, these are the ones that are absolutely necessary:
Gmail.apk
GoogleCalendarSyncAdapter.apk
GoogleContactsSyncAdapter.apk
GooglePartnerSetup.apk
GoogleServicesFramework.apk
MediaUploader.apk
SetupWizard.apk
Talk.apk
Vending.apk
After I installed all the applications, I still had some trouble initializing my Google account. I would type in my information, but it would take forever and then inform me that I didn't have an internet connection. I discovered that this had been a problem for some previous users with different devices. The workaround was to initialize your account through Google's YouTube app, which you will have to install along with the other *.apk files. I'm curious to see if anybody else has this problem. I'm fairly certain I had these issues because I was messing around with various gmail installations before I arrived at this solution. (Also, I'm wondering if installing "OneTimeInitializer.apk" might also help).
Good luck. I'm fairly confident about eventually getting the Market to work. Also, I'm glad to finally have Launcher Pro and Swiftkey installed instead of the default options.
Thanks for all the useful info!
I tried installing via the CyanogenMod gapps pack like you said and I currently have functioning Gmail, calendar sync, contacts sync, Reader & Maps (though of course you can't really get a location; good for looking up directions anyway). You don't have to install a new calendar app to get your Google calendar to sync. That comes with the calendar sync apk. You might lose the e-ink functionality of the current app if you tried to replace it with the standard Google Calendar app.
Install Gmail last. I had problems with Gmail force closing until I installed it after installing all the other supporting gapps.
I had the same problem logging into my Google account via Gmail, but the YouTube workaround was also successful for me. I got a weird error when I fired up Gmail after logging into my account. It said the account was not set up to sync. I unchecked and then rechecked the various elements in Settings > Accounts & Sync and that fixed my issue.

I've also rooted the Edge (with Z4root, seems simplest and works fine) and so far I've been stymied at almost every step. I'm noticing about half the apps in Amazon's App store don't install. I also pulled the .apk's for Quadrant and SetCPU, neither of them work however.
I think doing anything past installing some Google apps is going to necessitate a custom ROM, but there's not really any development happening for this thing and I certainly lack the programming skillz needed to do so.

If you're asking how to get Android 2.2.1, go to the entourage edge site, head to the forums, and use the partial link below to see the thread:

After rooting (thanks for posting that!), I can't seem to move any apps to the SD card.
I'm looking forward to installing the GAPPS, thanks for the how-tos.
